Now, UNICEF helps children all over the world. It works in over 190 countries and areas. It helps governments and families make the world a better place for children.UNICEF gets its money from donations. It raises money by selling holiday cards and organizing other fund-raising activities. People can help UNICEF by doing voluntary work.UNICEF believes that all children should have clean water and food so that they can be healthy. It also believes that they should go to school instead of working to support their families.3Dinosaurs lived on the Earth a long time ago. We now know that the first dinosaurs appeared about 245 million years ago. There were hundreds of different kinds of dinosaurs, but they didn’t live at the same time. Some dinosaurs were really small. One of the smallest dinosaurs was about one metre long and weighed about three kilograms. Others were really big. Some very large ones weighed over 100000 kilograms and some were about 40 metres long. Some dinosaurs ate plants and others ate meat. Dinosaurs walked on either two or four legs and lived on land.4My ideal school starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m. I love sports and computers, so we have PE and computer lessons every day. The classes are quite small. There are about 20 students in each class. There is a big dining hall. There we can eat and chat with our friends. There is a park on one side of our school and a shopping mall on the other. We have a big library. We also have a tennis court and a swimming pool. There are lots of clubs and after-school activities. Every month, we go on a school trip to a museum or a theatre.5Zhalong Nature Reserve is in north-east China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and cover for a lot of wildlife. It is a perfect place for some rare birds. Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for farms and buildings. This will lead to less and less space for wildlife. Now the Chinese government has made laws to protect Zhalong.Wetlands are important because they provide food and shelter for wildlife including some endangered birds, and they also help prevent floods. We must protect the home of plants, fish and birds.6Winter is my favourite season. It is very cold and everyone has to wear thick warm clothes, but I always enjoy the winter here in Harbin. The temperature is usually below zero and it is often snowy. Everything is covered in deep white snow, and the lakes and rivers are frozen. During this season, you cannot see beautiful flowers or green trees, but the land is quiet and beautiful. My friends and I love playing outside in winter. It is exciting to have big snowball fights. We also make snowmen and use carrots for their noses. They look funny.Winter is great!7My favourite festival is the Chinese New Year. People usually clean their houses before the festival. All the family members come back home from faraway places, because it’s time to get together. They have a big and delicious dinner on the Chinese New Year’s Eve. Then they watch TV till midnight. When the clock strikes 12, people say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one in different ways. On the morning of the Chinese New Year’s Day, people wear new clothes and visit their friends and relatives. Most of them prefer red because they think red can bring good luck.8My name is Lucy. I am in Year 9 at Woodland School near London. It is a mixed school. Boys and girls have lessons together. My favourite subject is French. Learning foreign languages is fun.Our school has a Reading Week every year. During the week, we can borrow more books from the school library. We can also bring in books and magazines from home. I often read more books than my classmates. Near the end of the week, we discuss the books with our classmates in class. Time seems to go faster when we are reading interesting books.9I have to choose a new colour for my bedroom. It’s a very important decision, because colour can change a person’s mood. I like orange, because it’s a happy, warm colour. It can make people feel comfortable. My best friend Jack doesn’t agree though. He thinks green is better. Jack says that green represents nature and that it can make you feel energetic. I remind Jack that green is also the colour of envy. My mother recommends blue. She thinks blue is a calm and peaceful colour, so it will make me less stressed and help me relax after school. Perhaps she is right.10Our good friend Jason is leaving Beijing tomorrow. Jason is an exchange student who studied at our school for six months.Jason is smart. He is good at Maths, and he often helped us with our homework. He likes our school because we have more after-school activities and more clubs.Everyone likes Jason because he is always kind and generous. He is willing to share things with others. Jason also has a great sense of humour. We will never forget his jokes. Now Jason has to go back to his family and friends in New York. We will all miss him very much. We wish him good luck.11Mum’s birthday is coming next Saturday, so I decided to make her a birthday card by myself.I went to Sandy’s home to make the card because I wanted to keep it secret. I planned to make the card with some roses on it. Sandy helped me with the drawing. We had fun working together. It took me two hours to finish. I coloured the roses red, blue and pink. I also cut out a picture of colourful balloons and stuck it on the cover. This is the first card I made for Mum. I hope she will like it.12All around the world, people drink tea, but tea does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea.In China people like to have tea together with their friends. They drink tea at any time of the day. They put only tea leaves in their cups. They prefer tea with nothing in it.Tea is also popular in Japan. People have tea every day, but the way they drink it is different from that in China. In the USA people drink tea at breakfast or after meals. They usually use teabags to make their tea.13Many young people are now giving up their spare time to become volunteers. It is a very meaningful activity because volunteering helps and gives support to different groups in society.Young people can choose to volunteer in many different charities. For example, I do voluntary work for two charities: the first one gives help and support to homeless people, and the second one takes care of the disabled people.Another choice is to take part in special projects or events to raise money for charity. Some people take part in charity walks, or they donate money to charities. You can even organize one of these events yourself.14Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. He got his first basketball when he was only four years old, but he did not become serious about basketball until he was 12. Yao joined the Houston Rockets in 2002 and became the best Chinese player to ever play in the NBA.When Yao Ming lived in the USA, he returned to China whenever he was needed. There is always more than enough food there. The cinema has a large TV. I would like to invite my friends to watch films with me at the weekend. On the first floor, there are six bedrooms. Each room has a new computer and all the beds are comfortable. There are two large rooms on the second floor. My friends and I have parties there. It is great fun!17We are going to hold a talk on good table manners this afternoon. The purpose is to teach students rules for eating. There will be a lot of rules of table manners. Above all, when you are sitting at the table, you should not start eating until everyone is ready, and it is impolite to make too much noise while you are eating or drinking. You should not eat with your mouth open or talk with food in your mouth. Before you leave the table, wait for everyone to finish. These rules are important because we should make sure that both guests and hosts are comfortable at the table.18Pollution is one of the biggest problems in the world today. In many places, rubbish is thrown into lakes and rivers, so many of them are polluted. In some cities, the air is filled with pollution. We need to take action to protect the environment.Switzerland is beautiful with high mountains and clean blue lakes. In Switzerland, things like glass, plastic and paper are separated into different groups and then recycled. Even old clothes and shoes can be recycled. The government has many laws to protect the environment. For example, people are not allowed to cut down trees. Otherwise, they will be punished.Remember that everyone can do something to make a difference.19This year’s Beijing Music Awards will be covered live this Saturday. Many Asian pop stars will attend.

等第分为A、B、C和D。

My favourite teacher was Miss Burke. She was the teacher who taught us English Literature. In our class there were 29 students. This is about the average size for British schools. We had to move to different classrooms for different classes. We also had different students in some classes, so it was difficult to remember all the faces and names.I found the homework was not as heavy as what I used to get in my old school, but it was a bit challenging for me at first because all the homework was in English. I felt lucky as all my teachers were very helpful and I enjoyed all my subjects: English, History, English Literature, Computer Science, Maths, Science, PE, Art, Cooking and French.Questions:[1] Who was the speaker’s favourite teacher?[2] Why was it difficult to remember all the faces and names?[3] Why did the speaker feel lucky?[4] How many students were there in the speaker’s class?[5] What were the subjects the speaker had at school?2Early in the 18th century, Captain Cook, a famous explorer of Australia, unexpectedly caught sight of an unusual animal during his first visit to Australia. The animal had a large mouse-like head and jumped along on its large legs. To his great surprise, the unusual animal carried its young in a special pocket of flesh. Captain Cook pointed to the animal which was eating grass in the distance and asked his native guide what the animal was. The guide seemed not to know what he was pointing at and finally said “kangaroo”, which Cook carefully wrote down as the animals name in his word book. The Europeans who later got to Australia were anxious to see the unusual animal “kangaroo”, but their requests were met with puzzled looks from the native people. Before long they discovered that the native guide who had answered Cook’s question really meant, ‘I don’t know what you are pointing at.” Funnily enough, the name “kangaroo” stuck and it is still in use today. Questions:[1] Who was Captain Cook?[2] When did Captain Cook reach Australia?[3] What did he unexpectedly see during his first visit to Australia?[4] What was the animal like?[5] How did the kangaroo get its name?3Dear Mr ZhuI am writing to your magazine’s ‘Teenagers Now” column to ask for some help with my 16-year-old son. At the moment, he refuses to do almost everything his mother and I ask him to do. He is our only child. His mum and I treat him very well, and his grandparents buy him many things. Yet he is still rude to us. He refuses to spend time with us or do as we tell him. Sometimes he acts as though he doesn’t even love us at all.Now he refuses to do his homework, and instead insist on wasting his time watching DVDs and listening to foreign music. I cannot un derstand this music, but I don’t like it. He also spends too much time in Internet cafes, where he either plays games or chats online. He is wasting valuable time during this important period in his life! What am I to do? At present, to prevent upsetting his mother with an argument, I am allowing him his freedom. However, I am worried that if I keep allowing him to do what he wants, he may fail at school, or worse. How can I help my son without harming our relationship?Yours sincerelyLiu Zhen huaQuestions:[1] Who do you think Mr Zhu is?[2] Why does Liu Zhen hua write to Mr Zhu?[3] What is his son’s problem?[4] How does he behave now?[5] What is Liu Zhenhua worried about?4Dear Zhou LingThings change so quickly! People thought it would never sink. However, this passenger ship surprised everyone when it sank on its first journey. The Titanic was built in Ireland in 1912.Its makers spent a great deal of money building the ship. The Titanic set sail on the 10th of April. On the 13th, it was sailing at full speed towards New York. The captain received warnings about icebergs all day, but he paid little attention to them.At 2.20 a.m., the Titanic sank into the sea. It had hit an iceberg just over two hours before. Of the 2200 people on the ship, only 705 survived.Explorer Robert Ballard searched for the Titanic for more than 20 years before he found it. ‘When new technology was developed, we used it to send cameras down into the sea. Scientists say that making the most of our senses when we are young can keep us healthy later on in life. One reason why we become stressed and have high blood pressure is that we misuse our senses in our everyday life. One study says that about 90% of our time is spent watching television or using computers. It adds that although our sense of sight is overused, our senses of touch and smell have been ignored.People often ask whether or not we should develop all our senses. The answer is yes. Scientists suggest that we do the following things more often. While having dinner, listen to some enjoyable music rather than watch TV. While relaxing at home, have some flowers next to you that smell nice. Before going to bed, turn the lights down. While sleeping, wear a nightshirt that is pleasant to touch--it will make you sleep deeply. Whether we sleep well is important because good sleep gives us the chance to dream and dreams keep us young and healthy.Questions:(1) Do scientists think our senses have something to do with our overall health? How?(2) What is one of the reasons why we become stressed and have high blood pressure?(3) What do scientists suggest?(4) Why should we wear nightshirts that are pleasant to touch while sleeping?(5) What is the main idea of this passage?7Trailwalker has been one of Hong Kong's largest fundraising event since1981.It is organized to raise money to help poor people in Aisa and Africa. It does not alwaysmean that you are happy, however, A smile can hide other feelings, like anger, fear or worryIn most countries, nodding the head up and down shows agreement, while shaking the head means that you do not agree, or that you refuse to do something. If you look away from a person or yawn, they may think you are not interested in them. If you stand holding your arms across your chest, you may be protecting yourself---just from a conversation you do not want! If you sit looking at and turn toward, the person you are talking to, it shows that you are interested. If you roll your eyes and turn your head away, most likely you do not believe what you are hearing, or you do not like what you hear. There are some differences in body language between cultures. It is important to give them attention.生词:ficial a.面部的ywan v. Questions:1. What can body language show?2. What feelings can a smile hide besides happiness?3. But why are people left-handed ? The answer is in the way the brain works. The brain has two halves-the right half and the left half .The right half controls the left side of the body, and the left controls the right side the body. So right-hanged people have a strong left brain, and left-handed people have a strong right brain. The two halves of the brain are about the same size. But each side controls different things. The left side controls language, mathematics, and logic. When you memorize the spelling of words, or when you put things in order, you use your left side. The right side of the brain controls your love of art, colour, music. It is also good at recognizing fact. This does not mean that all artists are left-handed and all accountants are right-handed.
