Reading (30%)Green Wave Washes Over Mainstream Shopping Research in Britain has shown that “green consumers” continue to flourish as a significant group among shoppers. This suggests that politicians who claim environmentalism is yesterday’s issue may be seriously misjudging the public mood.A report from Mintel, the market research organization, says that despite recession and financial pressures, more people than ever want to buy environmentally friendly products and a “green wave” has swept through consumerism, taking in people previously untouched by environmental concerns. The recently published report also predicts that the process will repeat itself with “ethical” concerns, involving issues such as fair trade with the Third World and the social record of businesses. Companies will have to be more honest and open in response to this mood.Mintel’s survey, based on nearly 1,000 consumers, found that the proportion who look for green products and are prepared to pay more for them has climbed from 53 percent in 1990 to around 60 percent in 1994. On average, they will pay 13 percent more for such products, although this percentage is higher among women, managerial and professional groups and those aged 35 to 44.Between 1990 and 1994 the proportion of consumers claiming to be unaware of or unconcerned about green issues fell from 18 to 10 percent but the number of green spender among older people and manual workers has risen substantially. Regions such as Scotland have also caught up with the south of England in their environmental concerns. According to Mintel, the image of green consumerism as associated in the past with the more eccentric members of society has virtually disappeared. The consumer research manager for Mintel, Angela Hughes, said it had become firmly established as a mainstream market. She explained that as far as the average person is concerned environmentalism has not “gone off the boil”. In fact, it has spread across a much wider range of consumer groups, ages and occupations.Mintel’s 1994 survey found that 13 percent of consumers are “very dark green”, nearly always buying environmentally friendly products, 28 percent are “dark green”, trying “as far as possible” to buy such products, and 21 percent are “pale green” tending to buy green products if they see them. Another 26 percent are “armchair greens”; they said they care about environmental issues but their concern does not affect their spending habits. Only 10 percent say they do not care about green issues.Four in ten people are “ethical spenders”, buying goods which do not, for example, involve dealings with oppressive regimes. This figure is the same as in 1990, although the number of “armchair ethicals” has risen from 28 to 35 percent and only 22 percent say they are, unconcerned now, against 30 percent in 1990. Hughes claims that in the twenty-first century, consumers will be encouraged to think more about the entire history of the products and services they buy, including the policies of the companies that provide them and that this will require a greater degree of honesty with consumers.Among green consumers, animal testing is the top issue—48 percent said they would be deterred from buying a product if it had been tested on animals—followed by concerns regarding irresponsible selling, the ozone layer, river and sea pollution, forest destruction, recycling and factor farming. However, concern for specific issues is lower than in 1990, suggesting that many consumers feel that Government and business have taken on the environmental agenda.Questions 1-6Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer of the passage? In your answer booklet write YES, NO, or NOT GIVEN for each statement.1. The research findings report commercial rather than political trends.2. Being financially better off has made shoppers more sensitive to buying ‘green’.3. The majority of shoppers are prepared to pay more for the benefit of the environment according to the research findings.4. Consumers’ green shopping habits are influenced by Mintel’s findings.5. Mintel has limited their investigation to professional and managerial groups.6. Mintel undertakes market surveys on an annual basis.【答案与解析】1.

Reading comprehension (40%):Passage 1Scholars often fail to see that music played an important role in the preservation of African culture in the United States. They correctly note that slavery stripped some cultural elements from Black people-their political and economic systems-but they underestimate the significance of music in sustaining other African cultural values. African music, unlike the music of some other cultures, was based on a total vision of life in which music was not an isolated social domain. In African culture music was pervasive, serving not only religion, but all phases of life, including birth, death, work, and play. The methods that a community devises to perpetuate itself come into being to preserve aspects of the cultural legacy that that community perceives as essential. Music, like art in general, was so inextricably a part of African culture that it became a crucial means of preserving the culture during and after the dislocations of slavery.1. The primary purpose of the passage is to _____.A. analyze the impact that slavery had on African political and economic systemsB. review the attempt of recent scholarship to study the influence of African music on other musicC. correct the failure of some scholarship to appreciate the significance of musicin African cultureD. survey the ways by which people attempt to preserve their culture against the effects of oppression2. In line 5, the phrase “isolated social domain” refers to _____.A. African music in relation to contemporary culture as a wholeB. music as it may be perceived in non-African culturesC. feature of African music that aided in transmitting African cultural valuesD. an aspect of the African cultural legacy3. Which of the following statements concerning the function of African music can be inferred from the passage?A. It preserved cultural values because it was thoroughly integrated into the lives of the people.B. It was more important in the development of African religious life than in other areas of culture.C. It was developed in response to the loss of political and economic systems.D. Its pervasiveness in African culture hindered its effectiveness in minimizing the impact of slavery.4. According to the author, scholars would err in drawing which of the following conclusions?Ⅰ. Slavery stripped the slaves of their political and economic systems.Ⅱ. African music was similar to all other traditions of music in that it originated in a total vision of life.Ⅲ. Music was a crucial part of the African cultural legacy.A. Ⅰ onlyB. Ⅱ onlyC. ⅠandⅡ onlyD.
如don't,can't,won't 应写为do not,cannot,will not 等。
如not…any 应写为no,not…much 写为little,not many 写做few 等。
(3)尽量少用"etc.","and so on"等表达方式。
例如:Activities include dancing,singing,etc 。
Activities include dancing, singing, and other fun stuff 。

You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive design is irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed, as you might end up with a rather uninteresting book. You soon become lost in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realise you have spent far too much time there and must hurry to keep some forgotten appointment --without buying a book, of course. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can go to such places as much as you wish. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting:"Can I help you, sir?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop, an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. You may want to find out where a particular section is. Then, and only then, are his services necessary. But when he has led you there, the assistant should leave politely and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book.31. The best title for this passage may be.A. The Attraction of BookshopsB. How To Spend Your TimeC. Bookshops and Their assistantsD. Buying Books32. According to the author, the best way to escape the realities of everyday life is.A.to chat with assistants in a bookshopB.to take a walk in the streetsC.to make some appointment in a bookshopD.to stay reading books of various kinds in a bookshop33. In a good bookshop,______.A.all the books there are interestingB.you are satisfiedC.you can find shelter from a showerD.you n eed to buy something you don’t want34.An assistant in a bookshop helps you_____.A.on your entering the shopB.just before you finish readingC.only when you want to find out where q particular section isD.when you are reading35.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.Time spent in a bookshop can be enjoyable only for book-lovers.B.There are only a few places where it is possible to escape the realities of life.C.People go to bookshops only to buy books.D.A book with an attractive design must be an interesting one.Passage 2Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas.(of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75miles per hour or more that give them hurricane(飓风) status, and several usually make their way to the coast.) There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people. The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds——even thousands——of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases the young hurricane begins to turn in a counter-clockwise motion. The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea——the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.36.When is a storm considered to be a hurricane?A.When it is accompanied by wind.B.When it is accompanied by both wind and rain.C.When its circling winds move at 75 miles per hour or even more.D.When the circling winds bring damages.37.The underlined ―innocent aircling disturbances‖ in Paragraph 2 meansA.innocent people causing small disturbances.B.innocent people causing big disturbancesC.damaging circling windsD.harmless circling winds.38.The underlined ―it‖ in ―moves upward through it ― in Paragraph2 refers toA. a disturbanceB.moist airC.trade windD. water39.Srong winds are produced becaused ofA.the young hurricaneB. the heat generated along with rainC.a disturbanceD.moist air40.Which of the following best summarizes the passage?A.The Hurricane – its harms and benefitsB.The origin and effects of hurricaneC.The hurricane and its great energyD.The disasters caused by hurricanesPassage 3Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they procide him with wood and other products;they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts and floods.Unfortunaterly, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagemess to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers ,only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire.(I gained the empire but, without its tree, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced by floods and starvation.)Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for itto persuade the cillager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with;and he can earn money by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the govermment has a good system of control,or can deucate the people, the forests will slowly disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers’ sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees their roots break the soil up------allowing the rain to sink in------and also bind the soil, thus preventing its being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away from the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.41. What is the most important function of trees?A. Providing fuel.B. Offering shade.C. Preventing natural disasters.D. Providing charcoal.42. What eventually happened to the rich, powerful country 2000years ago?A. Its people died of hanger.B. It fell to pieces.C. It became a giant empire.D. It built many ships with wood.43. It is implied in the passage that the villager__________.A. wants a plentiful supply of trees for their lifeB. wants fire wood to cook their meals and warm themselvesC. wants to get money so that they can be richD. is not aware of the importance of environmental protection44. One of the roles of trees is to , according to the passage.A. decorate natureB. destroy an empireC. harden soilD. keep soil in position45. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. The three benefits provided by trees.B. Trees and soil conservation.C. The various uses of trees.D. The different attitudes of the government and the villagers toward trees.Passage 4Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:Our boat floated on, between walls of forest too thick to allow us a view of the land we were passing through, though we knew from the map that our river must from time to time be passing through chains of hills which crossed the jungle plains. Nowhere did we find a place where we could have landed, where the jungle did not actually spread right down into the river, banks of soft mud prevented us going ashore. In any case, what would we have gained by landing? The country was full of snakes and other dangerous creatures, and the jungle was so thick that one would be able to advance only slowly, cutting one’s way with knives the whole way. So we stayed in the boat, hoping that when we reach the sea, a friendly fisherman would pick us up and take us to civilization. We lived on fish, caught with a home-made net of string (we had no hooks), and any fruit and nuts we could pick up out of the water. As we had no fire, we had to eat everything, including the fish, raw.I had never tasted raw fish before, and I must say I did not much enjoy the experience:perhaps sea-fish which do not live in the mud are less tasteless. After rating my raw fish,I lay back and dreamed of such things as fried chicken and rice, and ice-cream.In the never ending damp heat of the jungle,ice-cream was aparticularly frequent dream. As for water, there was a choice:we could drink the muddy river water,or die of thirst. We drank the water.(Men who have just escaped what had appreared to be certain death lose all worries about such small things as diseases caused by dirty water.)In fact, none of us suffered from any illness as a result. One day we passed another village, but fortunately nobody saw us.We did not wish to risk being taken prisoners a second time:we might not be so lucky as to escape in a stolen boat again.46.It can be inferred from the passage that they had been in.A.an untnhabited areaB.an enemy countryC.a primitive areaD.a hunting ground47.According to the passage, they would Not go ashore where .A.trees reached the riverB.the river side was covered with soft mudC.they could not find human helpD.they might meet enemies48.What did they do on the river bankA.They killed snakesB.They had to cut their way forward.C.They found a boatD.They did not go ashore49.According to the author,__________.A.Sea fish tasted better than fish in muddy waterB.Sea fish tasted worse than fish in muddy waterC.Sea fish in muddy water were tastelessD.Sea fish in muddy water were less tasteless50.Why did the author drink the river water ?A.Because the water was free from germs.B.Because they had experienced something worse.C.Because they were not likely to be affected by disease.D.Because they were too healthy fo fall ill.Part 3V ocabulary and Structure (35%)Section A(1%,30%)Directions:There are a number of incomplete sentences in this part. For each sentence there are four choices marked A,B,Cand D.Choose the ONE answer that best completes the sentence. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.51.There is ______resemblance between Jane and Mary, who are just in the same class. It is hard to tell one from the other.A. inspiringB.strikingC. excitingD.overwelming52. 2007年中山大学英语专业(基础英语)真题试卷(总分:80.00,做题时间:90分钟)一、阅读理解(总题数:4,分数:40.00)Scholars often fail to see that music played an important role in the preservation of African culture in the United States. They correctly note that slavery stripped some cultural elements from Black people—their political and economic systems—but they underestimate the significance of music in sustaining other African cultural values. African music, unlike the music of some other cultures, was based on a total vision of life in which music was not an isolated social domain. In African culture, music was pervasive, serving not only religion, but all phases of life, including birth, death, work and play. The methods that a community devises to perpetuate itself come into being to preserve aspects of the cultural legacy that community perceives as essential. Music, like art in general, was so inextricably a part of African culture that it becamea crucial means of preserving the culture during and after the dislocations of slavery.(分数:8.00)(1).The primary purpose of the passage is to______.(分数:2.00)A.analyze the impact that slavery had on African political and economic systemsB.Review the attempt of recent scholarship to study the influence of African music on other musicC.Correct the failure of some scholarship to appreciate the significance of music in African cultureD.Survey the ways by which people attempt to preserve their culture against the effects of oppression(2).In para. 1, line 5 the phrase "isolated social domain" refers to______.(分数:2.00)A.African music in relation to contemporary culture as a wholeB.Music as it may be perceived in non-African culturesC.Feature of African music that aided in transmitting African cultural valuesD.An aspect of the African cultural legacy(3).Which of the following statements concerning the function of African music can be inferred from the passage?(分数:2.00)A.It preserved cultural values because it was thoroughly integrated into the lives of the people.B.It was more important in the development of African religious life than in other areas of culture.C.It was developed in response to the loss of political and economic systems.D.Its pervasiveness in African culture hindered its effectiveness in minimizing the impact of slavery.(4).According to the author, scholars would err in drawing which of the following conclusions?I. Slavery stripped the slaves of their political and economic systems. II. African music was similar to all other traditions of music in that it originated in a total vision of life. III. Music was a crucial part of the African cultural legacy.(分数:2.00)A.I onlyB.II onlyC.I and II onlyD.I, II, and IIIOur task will be simpler if we begin with some stories written long before anyone worried very much about cleaning out the rhetorical imparities from the house of fiction. The stories in Boccancio"s Decameron, for example, seem extremely simple—perhaps even simple-minded and inept —if we ask of them the questions which many modern stories invite us to ask. It is bad enoughthat the characters are what we call two-dimensional, with no revealed depths of any kind; what is much worse, the "point of view" of the narrator shifts among them with a total disregard for the kind of technical focus or consistency generally admired today. But if we read these stories in their own terms, we soon discover a splendid and complex skill underlying the simplicity of the effect.(分数:8.00)(1).The primary purpose of the passage is to______.(分数:2.00)A.refute a belief about modern stories generally held by peopleB.show that the stories in Decameron are inferior to modern storiesC.suggest a way to reread pre-modern storiesD.re-interpret Boccaccio"s Decameron(2).In presenting the argument, the author does which of the following?(分数:2.00)A.Make an enumerationB.Present a paradoxC.Make a comparisonD.Give an analogy(3).Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?(分数:2.00)A.The stories in Decameron are full of two-dimensional characters.B.Pre-modern stories such as Decameron do not use any narrative techniques.C.Modern stories try to avoid more than one "point of view".D.Stories in Decamron depict characters in a superficial way.(4).It can be inferred from the passage that______.(分数:2.00)A.modern stories are generally more interesting than earlier stories because they can reveal the characters in depthsB.telling a story from more than one perspective is considered a rhetorical impurity by modern story writersC.Unlike modern stories, earlier stories generally do not invite readers to ask "questions of themD.The stories in Decameron are simple-mindedWe all accept that killing is in general wrong, but virtually all of us also recognize certain exception—that is, concede that there can be instances in which killing is permissible. In addition to accepting the obvious permissibility of killing microbes and plants(except then this is objectionable for either instrumental or impersonal reasons)most people believe that it can be permissible in a variety of circumstances to kill animals, and also that it can be permissible to kill other human beings in self-defense and in appropriate conditions in war. There are four distinct categories into which we may sort most or all instances of killing for which there may be a reasonable justification. Perhaps the most contentious category consists of cases in which killing would simply promote the greater good—for example, a case in which killing one person would prevent the killing, or the deaths, or the deaths, of a much greater number of people. The second category consists of cases in which an individual has done something that has lowered the moral barriers to harming him, or compromised his status as inviolable, or made him liable to action that might result in his death. Cases in which killing might be thought to be justified for this sort of reason include killing in self defense, killing in war, and killing as a mode of punishment. The third category of possibly permissible killing consists of cases in which the metaphysical or moral status of the individual killed is uncertain or controversial. Among those beings whose nature arguably entails a moral status inferior to our own are animals, human embryos and fetuses, newborn infants, congenitally severely retarded human beings, human beings who have suffered severe brain damage or dementia, and human beings who have been in irreversible coma. These are beings that are in one way or another "at the margins". The fourth and final category comprises cases in which death would not be harm to an individual but instead a benefit. In manysuch cases, the individual for whom death would be a benefit also desires to die and may request to be killed or helped to die. The practical issues that arise under this heading are suicide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.(分数:10.00)(1).The passage states that______.(分数:2.00)A.killing microbes and plants is generally not considered morally wrongB.most people think it alright to assist other people to commit suicideC.killing animals are morally more objectionable than killing plantsD.though killing human beings is immoral, sometimes it is necessary(2).The phrase "at the margins" in the last line of the fourth paragraph means:______.(分数:2.00)A.in dangerB.morally insignificantC.with an obscure moral statusD.in a helpless condition(3).According to the passage,______.(分数:2.00)A.it is permissible to kill one person if it can prevent the deaths of a much greater number of peopleB.killing in war is not morally wrongC.killing newborn babies might be morally justifiable.D.euthanasia is morally right because it benefits the individual involved(4).Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?(分数:2.00)A.Fetuses and newborn babies are considered to be morally inferior to ordinary human beings.B.Killing in self-defense might be permissible because the life of the person who attacks is no longer inviolable.C.Capital punishment is justifiable as a means of punishment.D.It is morally wrong to kill human beings who have been in irreversible coma.(5).Which of the following serves as the best title for the passage?(分数:2.00)A.Why Is Killing ImmoralB.The Morality of KillingC.Justifiable KillingsD.Problems of KillingPicture-taking is a technique both for annexing the objective world and for expressing the singular self. Photographs depict objective realities that already exist, though only the camera can disclose them. And they depict an individual photographer"s temperament discovering itself through the camera"s cropping of reality. That is, photography has two antithetical ideals: in the first, photography is about the world and the photographer is a mere observer who counts for little; but in the second, photography is the instrument of intrepid, questing subjectivity and photographer is all. These conflicting ideals arise from a fundamental uneasiness on the part of both photographers and viewers of photographs toward the aggressive component in "taking" a picture. Accordingly, the ideal of a photographer as observer is attractive because it implicitly denies that picture-taking is an aggressive act. The issue, of course, is not so clear-cut. What photographers do cannot be characterized as simply predatory or as simply and essentially, benevolent. As a consequence, one ideal of picture-taking or the other is always being rediscovered and championed. An important result of the coexistence of these two ideals is a recurrent ambivalence toward photography"s means. Whatever the claims that photography might make to be a form of personal expression on a par with painting, its originality is inextricably linked to be a form of a machine. The steady growth of these powers has made possible the extraordinary in formativeness and imaginative formal beauty of many photographs, like Harold Edgerton"s high-speed photographs of a bullet hitting its target or of the swirls and eddies of a tennisstroke. But as cameras become mere sophisticated, more armed, preferring to submit themselves to the limits imposed by premodern camera technology because a cruder, less high powered machine is thought to give more interesting or emotive results, to leave more room for creative accident. For example, it has been virtually a point of honor for many photographers, including Walker Evans and Cartiec-Bresson, to refuse to use modem equipment. These photographers have come to doubt the value of the camera as an instrument of "fast seeing". Cartiec-Bresson, in fact, claims that the modern camera may see too fast. This ambivalence toward photographic means determines trends in taste. The cult of the future(of faster and faster seeing)alternates over time with the wish to return to a purer past—when images had a handmade quality. This nostalgia for some pristine state of the photographic enterprise is currently wide-spread and underlies the present-dry enthusiasm for daguerreotypes and the work of forgotten nineteenth-century provincial photographers. Photographers and viewers of photographs, it seems, need periodically to resist their own knowingness.(分数:14.00)(1).According to the passage, interest among photographers in each of photography"s two ideals can be described as______.(分数:2.00)A.rapidly changingB.cyclically recurringC.steadily growingD.unrelated to change in technology(2).The author is primarily concerned with______.(分数:2.00)A.establishing new technical standards for contemporary photographyB.analyzing the influence of photographic ideals on picture-takingC.tracing the development of camera technology in the twentieth centuryD.describing how photographers" individual temperaments are reflected in their work(3).The passage states all of the following about photographs EXCEPT______.(分数:2.00)A.they can convey informationB.they can depict the photographer"s temperamentC.they can posses great formal beautyD.they can change the viewers sensibilities(4).The author mentions the work of Harold Edgerton in order to provide an example of______.(分数:2.00)A.how a controlled ambivalence toward photography"s means can produce outstanding picturesB.How the content of photographs has changed from the nineteenth century to the twentiethC.The popularity of high-speed photography in the twentieth centuryD.The relationship between photographic originality and technology(5).The passage suggests that photographers such as Walker Evans prefer old-fashioned techniques and equipment because these photographers______.(分数:2.00)A.dislike the dependence of photographic effectiveness on the powers of a machineB.strive for intense formal beauty in their photographsC.like the discipline that comes from self-imposed limitationD.need to feel armed by technology(6).According to the passage, the two antithetical ideals of photography differ primarily in the______.(分数:2.00)A.value that each pieces on the beauty of the finished productB.degree of technical knowledge that each requires of the photographerC.extent of the power that each requires of the photographers" equipmentD.way in which each defines the role of the photographer(7).Which of the following statements would be most likely to begin the paragraph immediately following the passage?(分数:2.00)A.Photographers, as a result of their heightened awareness of time, are constantly trying to capture events and actions that are fleetingB.Thus the cult of the future, worship of machines and speed, is firmly established in spite of efforts to the contrary by some photographers.C.The rejection of technical knowledge, however, can never be complete and photography cannot for any length of.time pretend that it has no weapons.D.The point of honor involved in rejecting complex equipment is, however, of no significance to the viewer of a photograph.二、句子改错(总题数:1,分数:20.00)Correct the mistakes in the following sentences. Write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET.(20%) Discipline and Punish(1975)is a genealogical study of the development of the "gentler" modern way of imprisoning criminals rather than torturing or killing them. While recognizing the element of genuinely enlightened reform, Foucault particularly emphasizes how such reform also becomes a vehicle of more effective control: "to punish less, perhaps; but certainly to punish better". He further argues that the new mode of punishment becomes the model for control of an entire society, with factories, hospitals and schools modeled on the modern prison. We should not, however, think that the deployment of this model was due to the explicit decisions of some central controlling agency. In typically genealogical fashion, Foucault"s analysis shows how techniques and institutions, developed for different and often quite innocuous purposes converged to create the modern system of disciplinary power.(分数:2.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________五、汉译英(总题数:1,分数:2.00)3.Translate the following passage into English. In narrow transcription, there are diacritics added to the one-letter symbols to show the finer differences between sounds.3.scale of delicacy:In analysis,we take a general area of meaning and gradually break it into smaller and smaller sub-areas.In each stage,we gradually make finer and finer distinctions in meaning. When the systems on a scale are arranged according to the fineness of distinction, then such a scale is called scale of delicacy.4.meaning shift:In a narrow sense, meaning shift is used to refer to the change of meaning that has nothing to do with generalization or restriction such as broadening or narrowing of meaning.5.Paradigmatic relation,Saussure originally called associative,is a relation holding between elements replaceable with each other at a particular place in a structure,or between one element present and the others absent.6.lexical ambiguity:This term refers to the ambiguity explained by reference to lexical meanings: For example,“I went to the bank”,where“bank”might refer to a financial establishment or the slope of land adjoining a river.7.schemata in text:It refers to packets of stored knowledge in language processing. For example, as to the sentence“Three turtles rested on a floating log,and a fish swam beneath them.”Most of us would use our stored knowledge of spatial relationships to draw the inference that the fish swam beneath the log as well as beneath the three turtles.municative competence:This notion is introduced by Hyme, referring to the ability to apply grammatical, discourse and cultural knowledge to communicate effectively in particular contexts for particular purposes.9.relational processes:It is also known as a process of being, and concerned with the relation between one experience and another. It can be classified into two types:attributive and identifying.10.speech and thought presentation:These two terms are used for the language in fiction, referring to the presenting forms for indicating the narrator’s speech or thought. The speech presentation may have the following four possibilities:direct speech, indirect speech, narrator’s representation of speech acts, and narrator’s representation of speech. The Thought presentation can also be categorized into:narrator’s representation of thought, narrator’s representation of thought acts, indirect thought, free indirect thought, and direct thought.IV.Explain the following statements with examples.(30%)1.Halliday defines a functional grammar as“essentially a‘natural’grammar”,and believes that language is what it is because it has evolved to serve certain functions.Key:We can judge from the way language is built up by children,in which language evolved in the human species beginning without any grammar at all.The children’s language is called protolanguage, and it is organized with meanings coded directly into expressions;as the children grow up,such a two-level system is then replaced by a three-level one in which meanings are first coded into wordings and these wordings then recoded into expressions. Thus, the form of the grammar relates naturally to the meanings that are being encoded. When a child of nineteen months reported“man clean car”,the fact that this is separated into three segments reflects the interpretation of composite experiences into their component parts, the different grammatical functions assigned to“man”,“clean”,“car”express the different roles of these parts with respect to the whole. The adult language,on the other hand, has built up semantic structures which enable use to“think about”our experience. And the systems of meanings have in their turn engendered lexicogrammatical structured that are plausible:hence we have verbs and nouns to match the analysis of experience into processes and participants. Thus,it is fair to say that a functional grammar is essentially a natural grammar,in the sense that everything in it can be explained by reference to how language is used;and language is what it is because it has evolved to serve certain functions.2.Explain the interrelationship between phonology and morphology.Key:In phonology,a phoneme is the smallest unit of sound and in morphology,a morpheme is the smallest unit in grammar. They are interrelated in the way that sometimes phonological factors contribute to the allomorphic variation and morphological factors may also affect the appearance of phonemes.Sometimes, there is phonological conditioning, which accounts for the allomorphic variants of a morpheme. For example, for the past tense morpheme{ed},there are variants like/t/in“worked”,/d/in“warmed”,and/id/in“wanted”.The occurrence of the variants is closely related to phonological rule which defines that/t/occurs after the voiceless consonants(except/t/),/d/after the voiced consonants(except/d/),and/id/after/t/and /d/.There are cases where the rules to govern the allomorphs of the morpheme are morphologically conditioned, which in turn triggers the change of the phonemes. For example, some irregular verbs will undergo a special internal vowel change to indicate the past tense and the past participle:get-got-got,sing-sang-sung,and write-wrote-written3.What are the major factors in syllabus design?Key:There are mainly three major factors in syllabus design(1)Selecting participants. Before the training program starts,it is necessary to specify the characteristics of the learner and select individuals who match those specifications. For example, for the colleges in China,in order to select qualified students,an entrance examination is held every year.Apart from the selecting of students, teacher should be selected according to specified standards.(2)Process.This refers to the actual design of the syllabus. For example, the arrangement of content, preparation of materials, selection of teaching methodology and techniques, and means of course evaluation, all of them have to be included.(3)Evaluation.At the end of the training program,it is necessary to find out whether and to what degree the learners have reached the teaching objectives. There are two different kinds of evaluation:internal evaluation, checking whether to what degree the program has taught what it meant to teach;external evaluation which tries to find out whether and to what degree the program is useful to the learners in their work. For example, the final exam is oneV.Answer the following questions with examples where necessary.(45%)1.What is the relationship between language and literature?Key:Literature is closely related to language.Generally speaking,it is marked by careful use of language, such as creative metaphors, elegant syntax, and so on.It reaches to human beings mostly via language. It could be seen as a language in use.The existence of literature owes a lot to language. The language used in literature is quite often different from language used in other fields, such as everyday use.In linguistics, the term“genre”is used to refer not only to types of literary works but also to any identifiable type of discourse, whether literary or not. Therefore, literature could be viewed as a particular range of genres or discourse types;that is,as a particular subset of the repertory of genres, existing in a given speech community. For example, written literature is discourse that may be read at a far distance in time a place from its origin.More generally speaking, literary discourse has many other general linguistic characteristics, such as certain kinds of phonological, syntactic, and semantic phenomena, occur with much greater frequency in literature than in other kinds of discourse. What’s more, studying the language of literature text as language can enhance our appreciation of the different systems of language organization, because the literary texts often reveal the nature of the language in which they written.2.What is linguistic relativity and why is it so important in linguistic studies?Key:Linguistic relativity is one of the two points in Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which states that distinctions encoded in one language are unique to that language alone, and“there is no limit to the structural diversity of language”.Therefore, similarity between languages is relative, the greater their structural differentiation is,the more diverse their conceptualization of the world will be.For example,in English, the boundaries among the color spectrum are made in this way:red, orange, violet, blue, and yellow. In fact, these discriminations are arbitrary, and in other language the boundaries are indeed different. In neither Spanish,Italian nor Russian is there is a word that corresponds to the English meaning of“blue”.Linguistic relativity is important in linguistic studies because it recognizes the fact of linguistic diversity, which stands as the base which descriptive linguistics lies on.Linguistic diversity also triggers out the study of the linguistic similarity. The study of the linguistic relativity has shed light on two important insights:there is nowadays recognition that language,as a code, reflects cultural and preoccupations and constrains the way people think.3.Read the following sentence and illustrate the ideas behind this statement:“Register is the term used in linguistics to describe the relationship between a particular style of language and its context of use.”Key:The register is what you are speaking at the time, depending on what you are doing and the nature of the activity in which the language is functioning.A register can be defined as a configuration of meanings that are typically associated with a particular situational。
