The Merchant of Venice

Unit 11 The merchant of Venice

Synopsis
Synopsis
At Venice, Antonio's ships are reported lost at sea.
This leaves him unable to satisfy the bond. Antonio has already made an enemy of Shylock through his outspoken antisemitism, and also because Antonio's habit of lending money without interest forces Shylock to charge lower rates. Shylock is even more determined to exact revenge from Christians after his daughter Jessica had fled home and eloped with the Christian Lorenzo.
The Merchant of Venice" is a play written by William Shakespeare, first performed in the early 17th century. The story revolves around a wealthy Venetian merchant named Antonio, who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock.《威尼斯商人》是威廉·莎士比亚写的一部戏剧,最早在17世纪初演出。
One of the main themes of the play is the nature of justice and mercy. This is exemplified in the famous trial scene where Shylock demands his pound of flesh from Antonio as collateral for the loan. The Duke of Venice presides over the trial and ultimately shows mercy towards Shylock by sparing his life but forcing him to convert to Christianity.
The character of Shylock has been a subject of much debate and discussion over the years. Some view him as a villainous character driven by greed and revenge, while others see him as a victim of discrimination and prejudice. Shakespeare himself portrays Shylock in a complex light, highlighting his humanity and the injustices he faces.

Portia:
Heroic character
Portia is commonly considered one of Shakespeare's greatest women, a noble and heroic character. At the beginning of the play, however, we do not see Portia’s potential for initiative and resourcefulness, This open appearance, however, proves to be a revealing introduction to Portia, who emerges as that rarest of combinations--a free spirit who abides rigidly by rules. Also, in her defeat of Shylock, she prevails by applying a more rigid standard than Shylock, agreeing that he can get a pound of flesh, but adding that it does not to allow for any loss of blood. Anybody can break the rules, but Portia’s effectiveness comes from her ability to make the law work for her. Being a wealth young girl, she is beautiful, gentle and tender, and full of stratagems. Her mind is equipped by humanism.
And what's his reason? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? …If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. Shylock was a Jew who beared the discrimination in Christian society. Under all sorts of unfair treatment, Shylock devoloped the abnormal personality. His desire of revenge almost couldn't separate with his shameful feeling. In another aspect, he also deserved our sympathy ,and he was just in racial oppression .And standing in the other side, Shylock was not resentful, hateful. the product of the society ,which made him a selfish ,indifference, greed person.
