Module 1Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion

George Bernard Shaw was born on 26 July,1856,in Dublin,as the son of George Carr Shaw, who was in the wholesale grain trade.Shaw’s childhood was troubled. His father was a drunkard, which made his son a teetotaller.Shaw went to the Wesleyan Connexional School, then moved to a private school near Dalkey, and then to Dublin’s Central Model School, ending his formal education at the Dublin English Scientific and Commercial Day School. At the age of 15 he started to work as a junior clerk. In 1876,he went to London, joining his sister and mother.Shaw did not return to Ireland for nearly thirty years.Shaw began his literary career by writing music and theatre criticism, and novels, including the semi-autobiographical Immaturity without much success. In 1884 Shaw joined the Fabian Society,a middle-class socialist group and served on its executive committee from 1885 to 1911.In 1895,Shaw became a drama critic for the Saturday Review. These articles were later collected in Our Theatres in the Nineties(1932).Shaw also wrote music, art and drama criticism for Dramatic Review(1885-1886),Our Corner(1885-1886), The Pall Mall Gazette(1885-1888),The World(1886-1894),and The Star(1888-1890)as’Corno di Basetto’.His music criticism has been collected in Shaw’s Music(1981).The Perfect Wagnerite appeared in 1898 and Caesar And Cleopatrain 1901.In 1898,Shaw married the wealthy Charlotte Payne-Townshend.They settled in 1906 in the Hertfordshire village of Ayot wrence.Shaw remained with Charlotte until her death, although he was occasionally linked with other women. He carried on a passionate correspondence over the years with Mrs.Patrick Campbell,a widow and actress.Shaw’s early plays including Widower’s Houses(1892),which criticized slum landlords were not well received. His “unpleasant plays”,ideological attacks on the evils of capitalism and explorations of moral and social problems, were followed with more entertaining but equally principled productions like Candida and John B ull’s Other Island(1904).Major Barbara depictedan officer of the Salvation Army, who learned from her father,a manufacturer of armaments, that money and power can be better weapons against evil than love.Pygmalion was originally written for the actress Mrs.Patrick Campbell, and became the basis for two films and a musical.Shaw’s popularity declined after his essay “Common Sense About the War”(1914),which wasconsidered unpatriotic. With Saint Joan(1924)he was again accepted by the post-war public.Shaw died at Ayot wrence,Hertfordshire,on November 2,1950.During his long career,Shaw wrote over 50 plays.1.Which play became the basis for two films?2.Who do you think was Mrs.Patrick Campbell?答案:1.Pygmalion 2.An actress.课前导引一、词汇扫描根据句意及各题括号中所给的汉语意思,从下面的方框中选择合适的单词或词组,用其适当形式填空。

During the twentieth century there has been a remarkable shortening of the proportion (比率,比例) of a woman’s life spent in caring for children . A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties , and would be likely to have seven or eight children . By the time the youngest was fifteen , the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years , during which custom , opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work . Today woman marry younger and have fewer children . Usually a woman’s youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty . Even while she has the care of children , her work is lightened by household appliances (家用电器)and convenience foods .This important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position . Even a fe w years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity , and most of them took a full-time job . However , when they married , they usually left work at once and never returned to it . Today the school-leaving age is sixteen , but many girls stay at school after that age , and though women tend to marry younger , more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born . Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work . Such changes have led to new relationship in marriage , with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life , and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money , and running the home , according to their abilities and interests of each of them . 56.For women at the beginning of the twentieth century , the amount of time spent taking care of children .A.was shorter than in previous centuries B.was longer than in previous centuriesC.was considered to be surprisingly long D.accounted for a great part of their lives57.When she was over fifty , the late nineteenth century mother .A.would be healthy enough to take paid employmentB.was usually expected to die fairly soonC.would expect to work until she diedD.was unlikely to find a job even if she wanted one58.One reason why today’s mother may take a job is that she .A.is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesB.does not like her own childrenC.need not worry about her children’s foodD.likes to share more equally in money with husband59.The new life-pattern reflected in the relationship in marriage is the result of .A.husbands’ finding greater satisfactions of family lifeB.wives’ abilities in running the homeC.women’s imp roved economic positionD.husband and wife fighting for their own interestsBA good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading . It is remarkable first for what it contains : the range of news from local crime to international politics , from sport to business to fashion to science , and the range of comment and special features (特写) as well , from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books , art , theatre and music . A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it : never completely , never straight through , but always by jumping from here to there , in and out glancing at one piece , reading another article all the way through , reading just a few paragraphs of the next . A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers , but for more than any one reader is interested in . What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality (时事性), its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now . But immediately can the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient 〔短暂的〕value . For all these reasons , reading newspapers efficiently which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wastingtime , demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading .60.a modern newspaper is remarkable for all the following except its .A.wide coverage B.same styleC.speed in reporting news D.popularity61.According to the passage , the reason why no two people really read the “same〞newspaper is .A.people scan for the news they are interested inB.different people prefer different newspapersC.people have different views about what a good newspaper isD.people are rarely interested in the same kind of news62.It can be concluded from the passage that the newspaper readers .A.apply reading techniques skillfully B.jump from one newspaper to anotherC.appreciate the variety of a newspaper D.usually read a newspaper selectively63.The best title for the passage would be .A.The Importance of Newspaper TopicalityB.The Characteristics of a Good NewspaperC.The Variety of a Good NewspaperD.Some Suggestions on How to Read a NewspaperCMany people will remember the flight of the space shuttle (航天飞机)Challenger , in June , 1993. The achievement of Sally Ride , America’s first woman astronaut to fly into space , made this flight especially memorable . Students from two high schools in Camden , New Jersey , however , are likely to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight .Norma didn’t travel alone . She brought about 100 companions along with her . Norma was an ant , a queen ant who , with her subjects , made up the first ant colony (群体) to travel into space . The ants were part of a science experiment designedby the students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects .The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly throughout the long space trip . The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened . The problem did not occur in space , but on the ground after Challenger had landed . The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed . The hot , dry desert air dried out the colony’s container and the ants died from lack of moisture (水分).The project was termed a success because it did provide useful information . Students will continue their efforts to find out exactly what went wrong . They will try to prevent the same difficulties from recurring (再发生) on future missions . They don’t want to be discouraged either by the death of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space . 64.The story is mainly about .A.Sally Ride’s first ride B.space equipment for insectsC.a space experiment with ants D.going to school in New Jersey65.The project wasn’t a failure because .A.some important things were learned B.dead ants are better C.everything went as expected D.students wrote about it66.The ants died because .A.weightlessness harmed them B.space caused too much painC.no one fed them in space D.they dried out in the desert67.On the next space trip , ants .A.will be sent without people B.should not be left in the desert too long C.will have to pay double fare D.will escape the trip completely 68.What does the underlined word “subjects〞 mean in the text ?A.things talked about B.lessons you study at schoolC.words stated in a sentence D.members ruled by a rulerDOne of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admitone’s mistakes . It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that , and it is even harder to say ,〞 I was wrong , and you were right about that .〞I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago . He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighbourhood where I grew up , and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons (in many countries , eggs are sold by the dozen and are put in cartons .) Then he related an incident and I began to remember unclearly the incident he was describing .I was about eight years old at that time . I went into the store with my mother to do some shopping . On that particular day , I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place .There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there were lots of eggs in dozen and half-dozen cartons . The cartons were put there or four feet high .I must have stopped in front of the poles of egg cartons . Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the cartons . For some reason , I decided it was up to me to put the eggs back together , so I went to work .The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened .When he appeared , I was on my knees looking at some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs broken , but to him it looked as though I was the one who just did it .He severely reprimanded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs . I tried to explain , but it was no good . Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident , it is plain that the manager did not .69.According to the passage, many people will have a good opinion of those who .A.often make mistakes but correct them in no timeB.have never made any mistakesC.admit their mistakesD.forget other people’s mistakes easily .70.Which is the correct order of the following events ?a.
