一、阅读理解(题型注释)
There is a strange tendency nowadays it has become fashionable to blame all of social evils on school teachers.
The fact is that teachers are being loaded down with ridiculously high expectations. Some studies have shown an association between student performance and teacher "effectiveness", depending on how this elusive education quality is measured, but there is also confirming evidence proving the stronger connection between student performance and a much more important variable: family income. Yes, I'm talking about poverty. Sorry to be so gauche, but when teachers point out the relationship between income and achievement, they're not escaping responsibility, but merely stating an embarrassing truth.
According to figures by the College Board, students from families making more than $200,000 score more than 300 points higher on the SAT, on average, than students from families making less than $20,000 a year. There is, in fact, a clear relationship all the way along the scale: Each rise in higher family income translated into points on the test. Sean Reardon of Stanford
试卷第2页,共14页
University concluded in a recent study that the achievement gap between high-income and low-income students is actually widening. It is unclear why this might be happening. Maybe it is due to increased income inequality. Maybe the relationship between income and achievement has somehow become stronger, and maybe there is some other reason.
Whatever the cause, our society's answer seems to be: Beat up the teachers. We tend to believe that most of the teachers in low-performing schools are incompetent —and, by extension, that most of the teachers in upper-crust schools, where students perform well, are paragons (典范)of virtue. But some of the most dedicated and talented teachers I've ever met were working in "failing" rural schools. And yes, in award-winning schools where "all the children are above average", I've met some unimaginatively boring teachers who should never be allowed near a classroom.
It is reasonable for teachers to take on responsibilities for their performance, but it is not to hold them accountable for factors that lie far beyond their control. It is fair to insist that teachers approach their jobs with the assumption that every single child, rich or poor, can succeed. It is not fair to expect teachers to correct all the imbalances that result from growing inequality in our society.
1、The text mainly ________. A .discusses the social inequality B .explains why teachers are treated badly
C .argues that it is wrong to blame teachers for all education problems
D .lists reasons beyond teachers' control for students' poor performance 2、The underlined word "gauche" in para.2 is closest in meaning to ________. A .serious B .awkward C .confident
D .proud
3、According to the text, which one of the following is strongly related with student performance?
A .Teacher effectiveness.
B .Parental involvement.
C .School ranking.
D .Family income.
4、Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A .Whether all teachers are competent in one school has nothing to do with its overall student performance.
B .None of the students from poor family perform well in the school.
C.Most of the teachers in low-performing schools are lacking in competence.
D.Parents should work hard to earn money to ensure their children's performance in the school.
A new heat-detecting camera can catch a liar in the act—at least 75% of the time, according to a small scientific study recently. If additional tests confirm its ability, the lie-detector camera might one day be used by airport security to identify terrorists before they get on an airplane, says researcher James Levine of the Mayo Clinic.
But it is questioned whether the camera would ever be reliable enough to be used on a large scale, or whether it could spot someone who plans to commit a crime. Levine and his colleagues enlisted 20 volunteers to help test the camera, which records the heat patterns that are created when blood rushes to the human face. The researchers told eight of them to commit a fake crime. They were told to stab a model, rob it of $20, then lie about the "rime". The remaining 12 people in the study knew nothing about the crime.
The researchers took all 20 people into an interrogation room(审讯室). They asked them whether they had stolen $20 and then recorded their answers with a standard polygraph(测谎仪)test and the new camera. The camera caught six out of eight liars as they were lying—the same lie-detecting ability as the polygraph test. The camera also correctly identified 11 of the 12 people who were telling the truth—a slightly better rate than the polygraph. The study is so small that it can't be used as proof of the camera's ability to catch a thief or a liar, Levine says. Still, he is hopeful that the camera is recording a subtle flushing of the face that may automatically occur when someone lies.
That flushing may not be caught by the naked eye, but the camera shows a bright
red-orange-yellow zone that represents blood rushing to the eyes. People who lie are afraid of getting caught. That fear triggers a primitive response to run away. Blood goes to the eyes so that the liar can more efficiently map out an escape route.
Levine claims even if the camera works as well as it did in this study, it could mean a thousand passengers a day would get pulled aside by security, causing lots of missed flights and irate passengers if it mistakenly labeled, thus it may take time before the camera would be ready for
a test at a large airport.
5、What does the lie-detector camera detect during the experiment?
A.The changes in the testees' emotions.
B.The heat patterns in the testees' faces.
试卷第4页,共14页
C .The blood pressure of the testees.
D .The testees' heartbeat.
6、Which is the finding about the lie-detector camera by experiment? A .Its lie-detecting ability is somewhat superior to a standard polygraph. B .It can accurately detect who is telling lies.
C .The camera can clearly distinguish an honest person from a liar.
D .A standard polygraph can't tell who is telling the truth. 7、What can be inferred from the passage?
A .The new lie-detector camera still calls for further testing for airport application.
B .The liar can't manage to escape if the blood goes to his eyes.
C .We can tell blood rushing from some color indicator from one's face.
D .The lie-detector camera is designed for airport security.
Valentine's Day had arrived and like other day of the year, I was very busy.
My romantic husband, Roy, planned a date like we had never had before. A reservation at an expensive restaurant was made. A beautifully wrapped present had been sitting on my dresser for a few days before the heart-filled holiday.
After a hard day at work, I hurried home, ran into the house and jumped into the shower. When my sweetheart arrived, I was dressed in my finest outfit and ready to go. He hugged me, just as the sitter arrived. We were both excited.
Unfortunately, the youngest member in our household wasn't so happy. "Daddy, you were going to take me to buy Mamma a present," Becky, my eight-year-old daughter said, as she sadly walked over to the sofa and sat down beside the sitter.
Roy looked at his watch and realized that if we were to make our reservations, we had to leave right away. He didn't even have a few minutes to take her to the comer store, to buy a heart-shaped box of chocolate candy.
"I'm sorry, I was late getting home, honey," he said. "That's OK," Becky replied. "I understand."
The entire evening was bittersweet. I couldn't help being concerned about the disappointment in Becky's eyes. I remembered how the joy of Valentine's Day had left her face, just before the door closed behind us. She wanted me to know how much she loved me. She didn't realize it, but I already knew it very well.
Today, I can't remember what was wrapped in that beautiful box, which I was excited for several days, but I'll never forget the special gift, which I received when we arrived, back home. Becky was asleep on the sofa, holding a box, which was sitting on her lap. When I kissed her cheek, she awoke. "I've got something for you, Mamma," she said, as a giant smile covered her tiny face.
The little box was wrapped in newspaper. As I tore the paper off and opened the box, I found the sweetest Valentine gift that I have ever received. It was a heart-shaped pillow, made by herself, with words "I Love You" stitched on it, filled with love, which I will cherish forever. My wonderful Valentine gift has a special place in my bedroom today, some thirteen years later. As she was growing up into a young woman, many times I held that pillow close to my heart. I don't know if a pillow can hold magic, but this pillow has surely held a great deal of joy for me over the years. It has helped me through several sleepless nights since she left home for college.
I not only cherish the gift, but the memory, as well.
8、How did the writer plan to spend the Valentine's Day?
A.To stay at work.
B.To have a family dinner.
C.To have dinner with her husband.

9、How did Becky feel when she knew her father had no time to take her to buy mother a gift? A.She was sad and cried.
B.She was disappointed but understanding.
C.She was lonely and frightened.
D.She was happy to be together with the sitter.
10、What gift did the author get when she got home that night?
A.A beautifully wrapped box.
B.A self-made box wrapped in newspaper.
C.A self-made heart-shaped pillow.
D.A red heart-shaped pillow bought in the store.

四、七选五(题型注释)
Culture shock isn't a clinical term or medical condition. It's simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. 51、
Those can be exciting, but those can also be overwhelming. You may feel sad, anxious, frustrated and want to go home.
Everyone may feel the pressure to change himself to fit in at one time or another—whether they've lived in the area for days or years.52、All of your experiences before you come to your new home are part of you and what makes you special.
The following tips may help you live in a new culture more easily and make sure the new culture doesn't overpower the old.
Teach people your culture. You're the one who meets the new culture, but it doesn't mean you should be the one doing all the learning. Take the opportunity to teach your classmates and new friends about your culture. 53、Invite them for traditional dishes from your culture, or show them how you celebrate your holidays.
Find a support group. Find people in your class or neighborhood who have recently moved here, too. You can share experiences, cheer each other up when things get difficult.
Keep in touch with home. You probably left behind your good friends and family when you moved. If it's going to be a long time until your next visit, keep in touch.54、You not only left behind people, but also other things, like your favorite spots to hang out. Keep pictures around to remind you of home.
Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is to understand the new culture and find a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your own culture that you value.
It's also important to be yourself. Try not to force yourself to change too fast or too many things all at once.55、As long as you find a good combination between old and new cultures, you'll be fine.
A.Making friends who aren't new to the culture may help you understand the new culture
better.
B .But don't feel that you need to change everything about yourself so you can stand out less.
C .When you move to a new place, you're bound to face a lot of changes.
D .Write letters, send emails, and make phone calls so that you can learn about the things happening there.
E. You will have your own pace of adjusting.
F. But the good news is that culture shock is temporary.
G. It will also help them to learn more about you in the process.

57、It was March 8th, the Women’s Day. I decided to do something for my mom and give her a surprise.
Immediately after school, I went to the supermarket, where I bought plenty of vegetables, fish and meat. As soon as I arrived home, I started to prepare the dinner for Mom. It was the first time that I had cooked something on my own. Not knowing the exact procedures to cook, I read some recipes first. Keeping what I had learned in mind, I got down to cooking. Almost an hour later, three simple but delicious dishes were ready on the table.
Since Mom couldn’t get home until thirty minutes lat er, I started to do some cleaning. It was not difficult for me. Soon, the floor was mopped clean.
No sooner had everything been ready than Mom came back. I couldn’t wait to show what I had done for her. A big smile with both surprise and satisfaction sprea d on Mom’s face when she found the hearty dinner and the tidy room. At that moment, pride rose from the bottom of my heart.
Although I felt a little tired, everything was worthwhile.
