This is the first time the two species have been sorted separately. In the past, elephants were mostly considered as either Asian elephants or African elephants. Forest and savanna elephants were typically classified as subspecies of African elephants. The African forest elephant is now listed as critically endangered and the African savanna elephant as endangered. The number of African forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a 31 -year assessment period. The population of African savanna elephants dropped by at least 60% over the last 50 years, according to the IUCN, which tracks the assessment risk of the world's animals. Africa currently has an estimated 415,000 elephants, counting the two species together. Both elephant species experienced significant population decreases because of poaching. Although it peaked in 2011, illegal hunting still happens and continues to threaten elephant populations. African elephants also face continued habitat loss as their land isconvertedfor agriculture or other uses. There is some good conservation news, the IUCN points out. Anti-poaching measures, combined with better land use planning to support better human-wildlife relationships, have helped conservation efforts. Some forest elephant population figures have stabilized in well-managed areas in Gabon and the Republic of Congo and savanna population figures have remained stable or have been growing, particularly in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area in southern Africa. But with constant demand for ivory and increasing human pressures on Africa's wild lands, concern for Africa's elephants is high, and the need to creatively conserve and wisely manage these animals and their habitats is more severe than ever.4. The welding process and respect for the qualities of the materials are interrelated and affect the final piece. “Most of the sculptures that are pictured in my works are made from steel, silicon bronze, and to Cor-Ten steel; shaped to create these beautiful and unique pieces of art. As you can see, my sculptures range in size anywhere from 12 inches to 30 feet or larger.”Through the years, his work found its way into such major public and private collections. “They encourage optimism, for they show strength and affirmation; there's nothing negative, depressing or anxiety-ridden about them”, wrote the late art critic John Dorsey in a 1997 exhibition review.8. Shelley Black, the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center focuses on not only rescuing young abandoned wolves but educating the public.Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands﹣on interaction with them here. And so,we gathered one late winter morning to learn, prepare and walk.Scrappy and Flora, our wolves that day, were brought to the center when only a few days old."They lived in the house with us for the first several months. We treated them like human babies, fed them and slept with them," said Shelley. So,they are totally used to people. However, these are wild animals. For that reason,Shelley and Casey explained, the walk is totally on the wolf's terms."We don't approach them, but if they come up to us,we can touch them."With all this in mind,we headed for the woods. We were walking on a logging road when suddenly,Flora, all 60 pounds of her, hurried up to me and raised up on her legs. She was almost as tall as me.As she leaned in,put her huge muddy paws on my shoulders and sniffed my face, apparently she was saying hello in wolf talk.We walked farther, maybe half a mile, while Scrappy and Flora dashed in and out of the woods stopping to occasionally roll in the snow, dig for this or that and just play. Then weall headed into the trees to a picturesque stream where the wolves splashed, drank and had a great time. One could point out that this whole adventure was staged and quite artificial. But the purpose,Casey and Shelley said,is to explain the wolves' place in the environment and, primarily,to let people know wolves don' t have to be universally feared﹣they really don' t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they' d rather avoid people, for the most part.(1)How is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center different from others?A.It trains and educates wild wolves.B.It aims to rescue young abandoned wolves.C.It raises wolves for commercial purposes.D.It allows visitors to take a walk with wolves.(2)What can be inferred from Shelley and Casey's explanation in Paragraph 2?A.The walk can be potentially dangerous.B.The wolves have lost all their wildness.C.People should get close to the wolves actively.D.The wolves can read people's mind like human babies.(3)Why did Flora behave like that when she saw the author on the logging road?A.To express curiosity.B.To show friendliness.C.To attract attention.D.To seek companionship.(4)Why do Casey and Shelley organize such an adventure?A.To advertise the center.B.To publicize wolf hunting.C.To promote environmental protection.D.To clarify some conventional views of wolves.13.(8分)Have you ever heard of agritourism where you can experience farm life?If not,Dr.Cindy Ayers﹣Elliott will tell you the real story of Foot Print Farms. The original concept of building Foot Print Farms was simple. When Ayers﹣Elliott returned to her hometown after graduation, she didn' t have to look any further than her state' s alarming health statistics to find a mission.Everywhere she turned, there were reports of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease."The problem was already identified." explains Ayers﹣Elliott."Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn't take research to see that. And many of the state' s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet."These days,Foot Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds of herbs and vegetables,is making fresh, naturally grown food."When speaking of the key to my success, the co﹣op model works because we share the work and rewards," notes Ayers﹣Elliott." A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team.To earn the money for equipment and other items, players committed to working five hours a week on the farm, and by the end of the summer they had produced 1,000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weights,T﹣shirts, sweat suits and pregame meals. But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts.""It' s a model that can easily be learned in other places and I' m looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that﹣﹣to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities,"Ayers﹣Elliott remarks. She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism aspect to the farm, where visitors can experience farm life, learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.(1)What made Ayers﹣Elliott set up Foot Print Farms?A.The problems faced by local farmers.B.Her further research into heart disease.C.The failure of her career after graduation.D.The health state of people in her hometown.(2)Why does the author take the football team as an example?A.To advocate the concept of independence.B.To stress the importance of teamwork.C.To support the idea of co﹣op model.D.To explore the key to success.(3)What is Ayers﹣Elliott' s attitude towards the future of Foot Print Farms?A.Optimistic.B.Skeptical.C.Cautious.D.Ambiguous.(4)What is the main idea of the text?A.Naturally grown food benefits people's health.B.Food Print Farms is making a difference in Mississippi.C.Ayers﹣Elliott encourages people to experience farmD.Agritourism is becoming increasingly popular in America.14.(8分)We can video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of Everest. But communicating with a submarine (潜艇)or a diver is not so easy. The lack of practical methods for sharing data between underwater and airborne devices has long been a frustration for scientists. The difficulty stems from the fact that radio signals work perfectly in air travel but poorly in water.Sonar (声呐)signals used by underwater sensors reflect off the surface of the water rather than reaching the air. Now,researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize underwater communication."What we've shown is that it's actually feasible to communicate from underwater to the air," says Fadel Adib,a professor at MJT's Media Lab,who led the research. The MIT researchers designed a system that uses an underwater machine to send sonar signals to the surface, making vibrations (震动)corresponding to the ls and Os of the data.A surface receiver then reads and decodes these tiny vibrations. The researchers call the system TARF.It has any number of potential real﹣world uses,Adib says.It could be used to find downed planes underwater by reading signals from sonar devices in a plane' s black box and it could allow submarines to communicate with the surface.Right now the technology is low﹣resolution. The initial study was conducted in theMIT while your kids splash (戏水)in the Pacific可知,在the Maui Banyan可以欣赏到平生见到的最美的日落美景.故选A.(3).B.细节理解题.根据Panama City,Panama中的you and your family;Jupiter,Florida中的a family of four;San Diego,California中的your family;Kihei Maui,Hawaii 中的a family of four四个广告中的均出现了family一词可知,这四个目的地都提供家庭住宿. 注意地点和时间的多样化造成的误选.③复读材料,核实答案.12.(8分)Created in 1998 by Casey and Shelley Black, the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center focuses on not only rescuing young abandoned wolves but educating the public.Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands﹣on interaction with them here. Then we all headed into the trees to a picturesque stream where the wolves splashed, drank and had a great time. One could point out that this whole adventure was staged and quite artificial. But the purpose,Casey and Shelley said,is to explain the wolves' place in the environment and, primarily,to let people know wolves don' t have to be universally feared﹣they really don' t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they' d rather avoid people, for the most part.(1)How is the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center different from others?DA.It trains and educates wild wolves.B.It aims to rescue young abandoned wolves.C.It raises wolves for commercial purposes.D.It allows visitors to take a walk with wolves.(2)What can be inferred from Shelley and Casey's explanation in Paragraph 2?A A.The walk can be potentially dangerous.B.The wolves have lost all their wildness.C.People should get close to the wolves actively.D.The wolves can read people's mind like human babies.(3)Why did Flora behave like that when she saw the author on the logging road?B A.To express curiosity.B.To show friendliness.C.To attract attention.D.To seek companionship.(4)Why do Casey and Shelley organize such an adventure?DA.To advertise the center.B.To publicize wolf hunting.C.To promote environmental protection.D.To clarify some conventional views of wolves.【分析】本文主要讲述了作者他们和Northern Lights野生动物狼中心的狼一起体念狼的生活习性的故事.【解答】答案:1﹣4DABD1.D.细节理解题.根据文章第一段Unlike other centers, you can actually walk with the wolves and have exciting, hands﹣on interaction with them here.可知与其他中心不同的是,你可以和狼一起行走,并在这里与它们进行令人兴奋的、动手的互动.由此可见,它允许游客和狼一起散步.故选D.2.A.推理判断题.根据第二段For that reason,Shelley and Casey explained, the walk is totally on the wolf's terms."We don't approach them, but if they come up to us,we cantouch them."可知出于这个原因,雪莱和凯西解释说,走路完全是按照狼的说法,"我们不接近他们,但如果他们接近我们,我们可以触摸他们."由此可见,步行可能有潜在的危险.故选A.3.B.细节理解题.根据文章第三段We were walking on a logging road when suddenly,Flora, all 60 pounds of her, hurried up to me and raised up on her legs. She was almost as tall as me.As she leaned in,put her huge muddy paws on my shoulders and sniffed my face, apparently she was saying hello in wolf talk. 故选B.4.D.推理判断题.根据最后一段But the purpose,Casey and Shelley said,is to explain the wolves' place in the environment and, primarily,to let people know wolves don' t have to be universally feared﹣they really don' t hide secretly in the woods just waiting to eat people, but they' d rather avoid people, for the most part. 在做推理判断题不要以个人的主观想象代替文章的事实,要根据文章事实进行合乎逻辑的推理判断.13.(8分)Have you ever heard of agritourism where you can experience farm life?If not,Dr.Cindy Ayers﹣Elliott will tell you the real story of Foot Print Farms. And many of the state' s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet."These days,Foot Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds of herbs andvegetables,is making fresh, naturally grown food."When speaking of the key to my success, the co﹣op model works because we share the work and rewards," notes Ayers﹣Elliott." A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team.To earn the money for equipment and other items, players committed to working five hours a week on the farm, and by the end of the summer they had produced 1,000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weights,T﹣shirts, sweat suits and pregame meals. She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism aspect to the farm, where visitors can experience farm life, learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.(1)What made Ayers﹣Elliott set up Foot Print Farms?DA.The problems faced by local farmers.B.Her further research into heart disease.C.The failure of her career after graduation.D.The health state of people in her hometown.(2)Why does the author take the football team as an example?CA.To advocate the concept of independence.B.To stress the importance of teamwork.C.To support the idea of co﹣op model.D.To explore the key to success.(3)What is Ayers﹣Elliott' s attitude towards the future of Foot Print Farms?A A.Optimistic.B.Skeptical.C.Cautious.D.Ambiguous.(4)What is the main idea of the text?BA.Naturally grown food benefits people's health.B.Food Print Farms is making a difference in Mississippi.C.Ayers﹣Elliott encourages people to experience farmD.Agritourism is becoming increasingly popular in America.【分析】本文主要讲述了艾尔斯﹣艾略特成立了足印农场,对密西西比河周边的人起了积极的作用.【解答】1.D.细节理解题.根据第二段"Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn't take research to see that. And many of the state' s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet."可知,让艾尔斯﹣艾略特成立了足印农场的原因是她家乡人们的健康状况.故选D.2.C.推理判断题.根据第三段But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts可知,作者以足球队为例是为了支持合作模式的想法.故选C.3.A.细节理解题.根据最后一段It' s a model that can easily be learned in other places and I' m looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that﹣﹣to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities可知,艾尔斯﹣艾略特对足迹农场未来的态度是乐观的.故选A.4.B. 在做推理判断题不要以个人的主观想象代替文章的事实,要根据文章事实进行合乎逻辑的推理判断.14.(8分)We can video chat with astronauts aboard the International Space Station and watch live footage from the frozen heights of Everest. Now,researchers at MIT have developed a method with the potential to revolutionize。

But recently researchers have found that these whales are on the moveand they have migrated from California waters to areas off Canada and Alaska for the first time since commercialwhaling ended in 1965.The researchers identified 15 blue whales that have appeared off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska since 1997. Four of these whales were recognized as onesthat were once sighted off California shores, suggesting that the whales are returning to an old migration pattern between the coasts. Before commercial whaling began in the early 1900s, blue whales were found widely throughout the North Pacific and California waters. But from the 1920s to the 1960s,whaling severely reduced the whale populations. Blue whales never recovered in the Northern Pacific, making sightings in this area rare. However, much larger groups of whales have been observed close to California since the 1970s.The scientists had previously thought that the California population was separate from the population that hadhistorically lived in North Pacific waters. But the current study shows that whales off the coast of British Columbia and the Gulf of Alaska are likely part of the Californiapopulation. To identify the blue whales, the researchers looked at photos of cetaceans taken in the North Pacific Ocean and compared them with a library of blue whale pictures taken along the West Cost of the United States and Southern Pacific. Up to now, the researchers are not quite sure why the whales are changing their migration patterns, but they suspect that the whales may be following their food moving farther north by the changes in ocean conditions.1. When slaves were first brought over from West Africa to the southern parts of America, they brought along with them aspects of their own culture-religion, dance, language, music, and cuisine. A mix of the two cultures eventually appeared. The religious dance of the ring shout turned into modern dances like the Charleston, and tribal chants slowly transformed into sorrowful hymns (圣歌) sung by slaves that described their hardships. These soulful accounts by slaves of the severe climate and conditions began to be called "the blues" , which continued in popularity among African Americans after the Civil War. This music increased in popularity into the early 1900s whenmany black musicians became an important part of the music industry. The slaves that had been brought over were from all different regions of West Africa, but they worked together until they gradually formed a common culture. Thisstrengthened the identity of their music that, in the 1950s, eventually led to the beginning of rock and roll. The Beatles, the most influential band of the 1960s, are often determined as the accelerator that resulted in the ideology (意识形态)surrounding music that is still around today. The fre edom and individuality associated with that time period brought forth a whole culture surrounding music. It was not just music any more, but a lifestyle.Over the d e cad e s, music has developed into such a vital part of society and pop culture. Musicians arc glorified, with tons of adoring and screaming fans. The modern technology of present day has allowed for a greater gap between the creator of the music and the fans, as well as a widespread commercialization of music. However, criticisms of modern pop music often arise due to its mass production, and now there is a lack of the same soul and quality of naturalness and simplicity in music that was rising in the early20th century.1. What contributed to the birth of the Charleston?A. Various African religions.B. People's love of tribal dances.C.A mix of two diff e rent cultures.D. The popularity of sorrowful hymns.2. Well, they do, and you can lean to understand “horse talk” if you pay close attention to the horses you see. When horses live in the wild, other animals try to eat them, so a lot of horse talk is about staying alive. Even now, when most horses live on farms, they watch for danger. For this reason, never walk behind a horse. If you surprise it, the horse might mistake you for a mountain lion or wolf and give a dangerous kick.By watching the ears of a horse, you can get clues to what it's hearing. A horse can tum each ear in a different direction. For a wild horse, this trick is important for survival. The horse can hear something sneaking up behind it while also checking out a threatening noise in front. When a horse lets its ears down, it's feeling safe and relaxed. If horses becomeisolated, they neigh, or “whinny,” calling for company. They're saying, “Where are you? I'm over here!” If a horse snorts(哼) while holding its head high and staring at something, it's saying, “That looks dangerous. Get ready to run!” When two horses meet, they put their noses together and smell each other's breath. It's their way of asking, “Are you a friend?” Horses nicker, too. Nickering is a quiet sort of sound. This friendly noise means they're feeling secure and saying, “Clad to see you.”In the wild, horses live in herds, with all members watching for danger. In a herd, only one horse is the leader, the “boss hoss”. The “boss hoss” is usually an older female. She watches for threats and teaches younger horses how to behave. However, others may want her job. When that happens, she pins her ears back against her head and may even bite or kick to get challengers to back off. She's using body language to say, “Hey, I'm in charge here!”All horses know that the one who makes others move is the leader. Horses relate to people that way, too.Horses have a language of their own. Now you know a bit of what they might be saying.4. What is the general idea of this passage?A. Horses can talk with their owners.B. You can know a bit of horses' language.C. Horses can “talk” in their own way.D. Other animals can also learn language.5. What does the underlined word “isolated” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Lonely.B. Glad.C. Sad.D. Frightened.6. What will a horse do when he wants to know whether another horse is a friend?A. He will let his ears down.B. He and another horse will put their noses together and smell each other's breath.C They both will hold their heads high and stare at something.D. He will give another horse a dangerous kick.7. How will the “boss hoss” deal with her challengers?A. By warning or fighting.B. By watching for threats.C. By teaching younger horses how to behave.D. By relating to people.CRecently, I read about a promotion from a home builder in San Diego where consumers (消费者) could buy a 4,000 square foot house for $1.6 million and get a smaller home bythe developer valued at $400 thousand for free. This sounds like a fantastic deal, but I am alwayswary ofany promotion labeled (给……加标签) with“buy one get one free”, and here is why.Oftentimes, “buy one get one free” ends up being “buy two at the regularprice”. For example, I often see “buy one get one free” ads for orange juice at the supermarket, but the first box always costs over $5.00. At the same time, the juices not in the promotion are selling for $2.50 to $2.99 a box.Another problem with “buy one get one free” is that oftentimes you do not need the second item. I only consume one gallon of milk every two weeks. If I were talked into buying a second gallon in a “buy one get onefree” promotion, then the second gallon would go bad before I have time to consume it. That creates waste instead of savings. In the case of theSan Diegodeveloper, so far they have received one offer on their expensive houses, but the buyer does not want the cheaper house for free. Instead, he wants the value of the smaller home taken away from his purchase price. I think this guy is quite wise because he saw right through the marketing of “buy one get one free”.Finally, it is up to you to see how much you need and how much you are willing to spend. Knowing the regular price of things also helps you in deciding whether a “buy one get one free” promotion is truly a great deal.8. What does the underlined part “wary of” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. annoyed atB. careful aboutC. familiar withD. puzzled about9. Why does the author mention milk in Paragraph 3?A. To show that there are many promotions of food.B.To suggest that people think twice before they shop.C. To prove that the second item isn’t always as good as the first one.D. To show that people often buy more than they need in the promotion.10. What does the house buyer want to do?A. Buy the smaller house only.B. Get the smaller house for free.C. Buy the larger house for $1.2 million.D. Buy both the larger and smaller houses for $2 million.11. How does the author organize the text?(P: Paragraph)A. B. C. D.DBob, a Burroughs junior high school football player, always had his mom cheering him on. He didn’t playexciting positions. He played as a linebacker(中后卫球员). Sadly, he often found himself at the bottom of the piles, where everyone would jump onto each other at the end of every play. Bob's mom realized it was hard for her son to hear her cheering. She hadto find a solution, but couldn't find one. Then one day the coach from the school team asked him if he wanted to join the team. Bob wasecstatic, because he was only a ninth grader. His mom was also excited, since she loved football and especially loved watching her son play. She kept considering a way for him to hear her. A cowbell! That was it. Now from the bottom of the piles Bob would hear his mom shaking her cowbell crazily, knowing she was there for him.Bob's team finally made it to the state championship game. What exciting time to play at Busch Stadium under the lights! This experience made Bob appreciate all the years that his mom had sacrificed everything to get him to practice every day, to wash his uniforms, and to never miss a game. He had to do something. On the night of the state championship game, the loudspeakers introduced Bob, and as he walked onto the field his mom shook the cowbell, hard. However, it didn’t sound right. She looked its inside, and found a note saying,”Thank you, Mom.” Bob had left her a note expressing his appreciation for always being with him, filling her heart with warmth. Finally Burroughs claimed the title of State Champion. While others were cheering and admiring the state championship cup, Bob' s mom clutched(紧握) her cowbell happily.Years later, Bob’s mom died. While digging through her belongings, he found the cowbell with the note. Bob took it to his mom's funeral and rang it, whispering, "Thank you, Mom.”12. The mixture of American and Japanese cultures.BTechnology is supposed to make our lives easier, allowing us todo things more quickly and efficiently. But too often it seems to make things harder. This increase in complexity, often called "feature creep," costs consumers time, but it also costs business money. Product returns in the U.S. cost a hundred billion dollars a year, and a recent study by Elke den Ouden, of Philips Electronics, found that at least half of returned products have nothing wrong with them. Consumers just couldn't figure out how to use them. Companies now know a great deal about problems of usability and consumer behavior, so why is it that feature creep proves unstoppable? In part, fieature creep is the product of the so-called internal-audience problem: the people who design and sell product are not the ones who buy and use them, and what engineers and marketers think is important is not necessarily what's best for consumers. The engineers tend not to notice when more options make a product less usable. And marketing and sales departments see each additional feature as a new selling point, and anew way to attract customers. You might think, then, that companies could avoid fieature creep by just paying attention to what customers really want. But that's where the trouble begins, because although consumers find overloaded gadgets(配件)unmanageable, they also find them attractive. It turns out that when we look at a new product in a store we tend to think that the more features there are, the better. It is only once we get the product home and try to use it that we realize the virtues of simplicity. It seems strange that we don't expect feature tiredness and thus avoid it. But, as numerous studies have shown, people are not, in general, good at predicting what will make them happy in the future. As a result, we will pay more for more features because we systematically overestimate how often we'll use them. We also overestimate our ability to figure out how a complicated product works. The fact that buyers want bells and whistles but users want something clear and simple creates an unusual problem for companies. A product that doesn't have enough features may fail to catch our eye in the store. But aproduct with too many features is likely to annoy consumers.4. What does the first paragraph mainly discuss?A. The benefits brought by the advanced technology.B. The recent study conducted by Elke den Ouden.C. The loss caused by the feature creep of technology.D. Many problems of usability known by the consumers.5. Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?A. It is the audience problem that leads to feature creep.B. What matters to designers and marketers is not good for consumers.C. Feature creep brings blessings to the people in marketing and sales.D. The engineers will not pay attention to the quality of the product6. What do we know about the buyers in paragraph 4?A. They are deeply convinced that all the products work in simple way.B. They are fed up with the more and more features of the products.C. They are too confident of their ability to use the complicated products.D. They are quite clear about the products which will make them happy.7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Saying No to Feature Creep is No Easy ThingB. Feature-heavy Products in DemandC. The More Features, the BetterD. Simplicity Outweighs ComplexityCIt was once a shoreline buried by enough garbage to make it invisible (看不见的), thus, given the unfortunate nickname "toilet bowl" . Now the Philippines' Manila Bay beach is totally different, compared with a few months ago. It happened so suddenly and extremely that it brought tears to the eyes of the local people. The cleanup started on 27 January, when 5, 000 volunteers descended on Manila Bay to remove over 45 tons (公吨) of garbage, marking the beginning of a nation-wide environmental campaign. But some two months before this great movement began, a quiet revolution was already underway.During the first week of December 2018, Brooklyn- based Bounties Network collectedthree tons of garbage from Manila Bay aver two days through a project that paid a small group of people, mostly fishermen, with adigital currency (数字货币) based on the Ethereum system. For the mostly non-bank -using Filipino fishermen, this was a first-ever experience with a digital currency. It's one that proves decisive in enabling poor communities around the world to take up arms in the fight against humanity's waste. There are signs that this recycling-for-digital payment industry may be just about to take off. Earlier in September 2018, Plastic Bank, a Vancouver -based company powered by IBM technology, also started a similar project. They set up a project in Naga, a town in southern Luzon, the country's largest island, building a collection point to let people exchange plastic and recyclable materials for digital payouts through a system. That both these pioneers have chosen the Philippines as their first location is not surprising considering the country's contribution to ocean waste. A Wall Street Journal study in 2015 revealed that the Philippines make the third-largest amount of plastic waste into global oceans.8. Why did people call Manila Bay beach“toilet bowl” ?A. It looked like a huge bowl.B. There were plenty of toilets.C. It was covered by rubbish.D. People loved the toilets here.9. What does the underlined phrase“descended on”in paragraph 2 mean?A. Completely depended on.B. Suddenly arrived at.C. Occasionally decreased to.D. Gradually disappeared from.10. What made poor communities willing to fight against waste?A. The benefits to their homeland.B. The desire to make a difference.C. The chance to escape ocean pollution.D. The experience with a digital currency.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Online system helps endocean pollution.B. Manila Bay beach is suddenly removed.C. Plastic Bank is powerful in recycling waste.D. Philippines make a great amount of waste.DWhen you walk on a sandy beach, it takes more energy than striding down a sidewalk — because the weight of your body pushes into the sand. Turns out, the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads. The weight of the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation (凹陷) in the pavement (路面) — and it makes it such that it’s continuously driving up a very shallow hill.Jeremy Gregory, a sustainability scientist at M.I.T. and histeam modeled how much energy could be saved — and green-house gases avoided — by simply stiffening (硬化) the nation’s roads and highways. And they found that stiffening 10 percent of the nation’s roads every year could prevent 440 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions over the next five decades — enough to offset half a percent of projected transportation sector emissions over that time period. To put those emissions savings into context — that amount is equivalent to how much CO2 you’d spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground — or by growing seven billion trees — for a decade. The results are in the Transportation Research Record. As for how to stiffen roads? Gregory says you could mix small amounts of synthetic fibers orcarbon nanotubes into paving materials. Or you could pave with cement-based concrete, which is stiffer than asphalt (沥青).This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of the usual hurdles. Usually, when it comes to reducing emissions in the transportation sector, you’re talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves millions and millions of people — as opposed to changing the way we design and maintain our pavements. That’s just on the order of thousands of people who are working in transportation agencies. And when it comes to retrofitting (翻新) our streets and highways —those agencies are where the rubber meets the road.12. Why does the author mention “walk on a sandy beach” in paragraph 1?A. To present a fact.B. To make a contrast.C. To explain a rule.D. To share an experience.13. What suggestion does the author give to reduce CO2 emissions?A. Hardening the road.B. Keeping oil in the ground.C. Growing trees for decades.D. Improving the transportation.14. What is the advantage of this suggestion?A. Gaining more support.B. Consuming less money.C. Involving more people.D. Facing fewer usual obstacles.15. What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph?A.Those agencies are likely to make more rules.B. Those agencies will change some related policies.C. Those agenciesmight put more rubber tires on the roads.D. Those agencies will play a key role in making this happen.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
