When I was three years old, I couldn’t speak. It w as a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.
One day, I was shadowing my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic(模仿)her mouth’s movements until I formed a word.
It turned out I’m deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I’ve never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow. Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That’s my reality when I sleep on my “good ear”, and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.
People call my deaf side my “bad ear”, but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don’t. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors. Owning a hearing aid hasn’t always felt good, how ever. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, “Aren’t those for old men?” At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it’s not just school kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles(字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find. And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations —I’m lucky. I’m deaf, but I can still hear everything. I’ve been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sle eping, I’m even superhuman.
24. How does the author view his hearing difficulty?
A. It’s a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.
B. It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.
C. It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.
D. It gave him a chance to experience something special.
25. What can be inferred from the passage about the author?
A. He was born deaf.
B. The hearing aid brings much convenience to his daily life.
C. His family and classmates have supported him a lot.
D. He is optimistic and helpful.
26. What is the author’s attitude toward his life?
A. excited.
B. anxious.
C. grateful.
D. disappointed.
27. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
A. To share his experience of treating a disadvantage with gratitude.
B. To show how difficult life is for disabled people.
C. To give advice on life to disabled people.
D. To show the convenience a hearing aid could bring.
C
While many countries love their tea, UK citizens are particularly proud of being “tea people”. The average UK citizen consumes nearly 2 kilograms of tea each year.
Tea only made its way to England in large quantities in the first years of the 17th century. Tea from China and a few other Asian countries was being sold more widely in England at th at time. Then tea was getting more and more popular among different social classes.
There are many varieties of tea. Black tea mixtures are still the most common type drunk in the UK. Black tea is dark in colour, because the leaves have been allowed to oxidize (氧化) before drying. This is why we usually serve it with milk, although it is not uncommon to drink it black or with lemon. You may still find tea made with loose tea leaves, served up in a pot, and poured into the best china cups with saucers (茶托) for visitors.
Tea is still a large part of daily life in the UK today, but it seems to be on the decrease. The amount of tea sold in the UK fell by more than 10% in the five years leading up to 2002, and has been dropping ever since. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone, and most restaurants report selling more than twice as many cups of coffee as they do tea. More than £1 billion was spent on coffee in high street stores in 2013, more than twice what was spent on tea bags.
Still, what goes around comes around; it’s sure to become fashionable
again.
28. Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs?
A. Tea made its way to England in the early years of the 16th century.
B. The UK usually serves black tea with lemon.
C. Tea from China was being sold more widely in England now.
D. UK citizens take pride in being “tea people”.
29. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Tea sales fell by 6% in 2014 alone.
B. Since 2002, the sales of tea has been on the decrease.
C. In 2013, the money spent on tea was £3 billion.
D. Most restaurants like selling tea than coffee.
30. What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph?
A. It can never succeed again.
B. The tea can become popular again.
C. Coffee is more popular than tea.
D. The tea is becoming less popular.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce tea in the UK.
B. To show the author’s preference for tea.
C. To introduce the functions of tea.
D. To compare tea in China and UK.
D
Kiwi students have become the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher named Will. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Will is just an avatar (化身) that appears on the student’s de sktop, tablet or smartphone screen. Auckland energy company Vector and AI company Soul Machines have worked together to model after the human brain and nervous system, allowing it to show human-like behavior. The digital teacher is now teaching primary school students about renewable energy.
Just like the humans it replaced, Will is able to instantly react to the students’ responses to the topic. He also picks up facial expressions, body language of the students. For instance, if a student smiles at Will, he smiles back. The two-way interaction(互动) not only helps capture(捕捉) the students’ attention, but also allows the program’s developers to monitor their performance, and make changes if needed.
Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer of Soul Machines, sa ys, “It’s well-documented that STEM teachers are in short supply in New Zealand schools. By using digital teachers, we are able to provide access to education to kids and communities that might not have access to real teachers.”
Greg believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to have the
attention of the next generation. He says, “The program, in place since August 2018, has been a great success thus far. However, regardless of its popularity, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one thing, the avatar’s knowledge base is severely limited. For another, even the smartest digital avatars could never react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis.”
32.What do we know about Will?
A.He teaches college students in the classroom.
B.He will replace human teachers in the future.
C.He can deal with unexpected issues in class.

A.To monitor students’ performance.
B.To respond to the teacher shortage.
C.To capture students’ attention in class.
D.To teach students renewable energy.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.World-first Digital Teacher. B.Future of Energy Company. C.Development of AI Company. D.Shortage of Human Teachers.

Dear Jack Wood,
How worried I am to hear the news that you had your right shoulder injured seriously after falling d own while playing basketball.
I’m anxious to know more about your injury, wondering whether you are feeling any better now. And I also want to say how excited I am when I read your blogs-Traveling Along the old Silk Road in China. You mentioned lots of places of interest in my hometown, most of which I've never been to. What a pity! I believe your vivid description and beautiful pictures make my hometown known to more people. They are worth reading. Up to now, I still have been impressed with your interesting and attractive English classes and I have really benefited a lot.
Looking forward to hearing from you and expecting you to recover as soon as possible!
