You want to select a style that is both aesthetically pleasing, and also meets your personal and professional needs. There are 3 main types of resume formats from which you can choose. A headline and branding statement, along with a summary and a list of core competencies will add value to the resume; and these components should be included prior to beginning the professional experience section. Hybrid ResumeFormat I often recommend a hybrid resume format in cases where a candidate is not currently employed, has a gap, or has relevant accomplishments that should be brought to the top of the resume. As with the reverse chronological, the resume should begin with a powerful headline/branding statement, a summary, and a list of core competencies. However, unlike the chronological section, the next section should focus on career highlights or select accomplishments. These can be listed generally or grouped by job title. The nice thing about this section is that it does not necessarily need to be in reverse chronological order. If you are applying for a job that will utilize your skills from a position you held prior to your most recent role, you can list these relevant accomplishments first to provide maximum visibility. Beneath the section highlighting your most relevant and appropriate career achievements you can begin to detail your experience in reverse chronological order. If you have a gap in your resume, you will already have given the reader good reasons to be interested in your background. Functional Resume Format Functional resumes highlight specific skills in multiple segments based on the duties you are capable of performing. If you have staff management skills for example, these could be listed in a single section. Your business development experience might be outlined in a separate section. A third section could discuss hands-on technical abilities within your area of expertise. It has been my experience that functional resumes typically fall flat when it comes to getting interviews. Isn’t that what it is all about? Functional resumes do not clearly define where the work was performed; they are vague. I have found that candidateswho have a choppy career history and are attempting to cover gaps often use this type of resume. It seldom hides the obvious and may even raise red flags. Remember, no matter which resume format you ultimately decide to use, the first portion of your resume is prime real estate. Resumes/PortfoliosResumes are a marketing tool used to highlight your skills, abilities, accomplishments and interests. They are often your first formalized introduction to an employer and, therefore, deserve special attention. When developing a resume, it is important to keep in mind that it should be as targeted as possible to a certain industry and/or to specific kinds of jobs.A portfolio is also a marketing tool that allows you to present supplementary information about your skills, education and experiences to employers. A portfolio allows you to organize examples of your experiences; you can provide this information during a job interview as additional evidence of your abilities.Types of ResumesMost resumes are referred to as being either chronological or functional/combination. Chronological ResumesChronological resumes typically are recommended when you have a consistent and somewhat related employment history. This type of resume places emphasis on your previous employment and your accomplishments and duties. The chronological resume is not recommended for individuals with little or no work experience related to the job they seek and it is not recommended for individuals with significant gaps in work history.Sample Chronological ResumeFunctional/combination Resumes:Functional or combination resumes are only recommended if you are changing careers or if you have significant gaps in your employment history. This type of resume emphasizes the skills that you have gained that transfer to the new occupational area.Sample Functional ResumeScannable ResumesAt times, it may be necessary to provide employers with a scannable resume that will be read by a computer and will be looking for key words in your resumes. Prepare your resume in either a chronological or functional/combination format, but utilize the following guidelines:•Select an unembellished font such as Arial,•Avoid italics, bold and underlining,•Use keywords to identify skills and abilities the employer is seeking, and•Put your name and address on each page of the resume.Outline of ResumesThere are several essential components that all resumes should ideally contain. These components area outlined and discussed below. The heading is always the first part of any resume. All other components can be placed in their order of importance relative to the position that you are applying for.Essential Resume ComponentsHeading:The heading contains the following:•Name•Address(es)If you are living in a temporary setting, such as a college campus, you may want to provide both a temporary and a permanent address so that employers can easily reach you. •Phone number(s)•Email addressObjective or Summary of Qualifications:The objective is typically used when applying for entry-level positions. It contains the following information:•The position or occupational area of interest,•The industry of interest, and•Skills that you will bring to the position.A summary of qualifications is used when you have significant work experience. It contains approximately 4 – 6 statements that provides a summary of your resume and highlight key points of interest. It can easily be tailored to each position that you apply for and is an effective way to get an employer interested in you as a potential employment candidate.Education:With the education section, it is important to provide information about schools you attended after high school. It is not necessary to list all schools, but it is important to supply information about schools you are currently attending or those that you graduated from. This section should contain the following information:•School name (no abbreviations),•City and state of the school,•Degree you are completing or obtained,•Month and year of anticipated or actual graduation, and•GPA information should be included only if your GPA is 3.0 or above.Experience:This section allows you to highlight your skills and abilities to an employer. It can include information about paid employment, significant volunteer positions, practicums, internships and/or cooperative education positions. It includes the following information:•Employer name,•City and state of employer,•Job title,•Dates of employment (month, year to month, year are appropriate),•Concise, bulleted job descriptions that start with action verbs and clearly state your duties and responsibilities.Additional Resume ComponentsAdditional Skills:This section enables you to provide employers with additional information about specialized skills that you can offer to them. You many want to include information about foreign languages you are fluent in, technical skill proficiencies, or any professional certifications.Activities:This section includes information about the organization you belong(ed) to, dates of involvement, and any positions you held, responsibilities, and/or accomplishments.Awards:You can include any relevant award information; include the name of the award, the organization or company that presented it, and when you received it.References:References are not included on your resumes; they are, however, included on a separate sheet and added to cover letter and resume information. In addition, it is no longer necessary to include the statement, “References available upon request”, on your resume.On your reference page, you would include the name, job title, business name, business address, and phone number of three to five people. References include individuals who have witnessed your skills and abilities in some way and who can provide information about these skills to employers. References should include current and previous supervisors, professors and individuals that you work with through community organizations and professional associations; they should not include family or friends.
