Lab 1: Springs & Simple Harmonic MotionJulie JonesLab Partner: John JacksonLab TA: Robert SchmitzDate: 2/29/13Theory The amount by which an ideal spring is displaced (stretched or compressed) by an applied force is proportional to a quality of that spring called the spring constant . The exact relationship is given by the equation F = kx, where F is the applied force, x is the displacement and k is the spring constant. Furthermore, displacing a spring results in a restoring force being exerted by the spring equal in magnitude to the force that caused the displacement. One consequence of this restoring force is that a mass, m, attached to a spring can oscillate in simple harmonic motion with angular frequency given by the equation 2 = k/m. Experimental DescriptionIn this experiment we calculated the spring constant of a specific spring by hanging various known masses from the spring and measuring how much it was displaced (x, in the above equation). We then oscillated these masses by pulling on them and releasing. Angular frequencies of oscillation were obtained via a sonic-based proximity sensor and accompanying software, and we then compared the measured values to those we calculated using our spring constant and the above equation. ResultsThree weights, of mass 0.8 kg, 1.3 kg and 1.7 kg were each hung three times from the spring and the displacements were measured using a meter stick. As we did this, we found that despite our best efforts it was difficult to get the weights perfectly motionless, and therefore the discrepancies in displacement are due to tiny fluctuations of the weights position as they hung. The nine displacements are recorded in the spreadsheet attached to this report, along with a percent uncertainty based on the fact we could only measure displacements with 1 mm accuracy. For instance, the first displacement of the 0.8 kg mass was 55 1 mm, so the percent uncertainty is equal to (1/55)*100% = 1.8%With the weights hanging, the force stretching the spring is equal to mg, where 9.8 m/s 2was used as the value of the gravitational constant, g. The springconstant was calculated using the equation k = F/x = mg/x, and the nine calculated values are listed in the raw data spreadsheet.The uncertainty in k was calculated from the percent uncertainty in x. This was deemed an acceptable method since the results are similar to calculating the range of k values for a given range of x values accordingly. For instance, the two extreme values of k for the 55 1 mm displacement of the 0.8 kg mass are k = 140 N/m (corresponding to x = 56 mm) and k = 145.2 N/m (corresponding to x = 54 mm). These are equivalent to a 1.8% uncertainty on the value of k = 143 N/m calculated using 55 mm.The overall calculated value of our spring constant was then taken as the average of all values, with an uncertainty taken as an average as well. Based on the results we obtained in the lab, we believe our spring to have a spring constant value of k = 145 1.85 N/m.We then oscillated each mass in simple harmonic motion according to the instructions in the lab. Since the initial displacement does not affect the angular frequency, it was not recorded. For each of the three masses, the Logger Pro software calculated the angular frequency of oscillation and they are included with each of the three plots attached to this report.For the 0.8 kg mass, based on our spring constant and using 2 = k/m, we calculated an angular frequency of 13.5 rad/s. This is in agreement with the measured value of 13.55 0.25 rad/s. For the 1.3 kg mass, based on our spring constant and using 2 = k/m, we calculated an angular frequency of 10.6 rad/s. This is in agreement with the measured value of 10.68 0.21 rad/s. For the 1.7 kg mass, based on our spring constant and using 2 = k/m, we calculated an angular frequency of 9.2 rad/s. This is in agreement with the measured value of 9.3 0.17 rad/s.Since all of our calculated angular frequencies were lower than those obtained experimentally, it is possible that the spring constant we calculated may be slightly lower than the actual value for this spring. One possible reason for this is that our spring is not completely ideal, and therefore does not exactly perform as theoretically described. Therefore my answer to the question in the la b “Do you think your spring is an ideal spring?”is “Yes, but perhaps not perfectly”! ConclusionThe experiment was performed as described in the lab and we were able to calculate a spring constant of 145 1.85 N/m using the measurements we made. Using this value, we calculated angular frequencies of oscillation that were in agreement with those obtained experimentally when we oscillated the weights on the spring in simple harmonic motion. Since our theoretical values closely matched those measured, we concluded our spring was ideal.= 13.55 0.25 rad/s= 10.68 0.21 rad/s = 9.3 0.17 rad/s。
