There are no man­made rules,as other games such as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore,but it is this freedom from man­made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports,we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game〞.We should be mistaken in this. There are,it is true,no “matches〞between “teams〞 of climbers,but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend,there is obviously teamwork.The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year by year. BE IJING (AP) A Chinese national volleyball player crashed into a wall during practice and is facing permanent paralysis, making him the second Chinese athlete in less than a week to suffer neck and spinal cord injuries.
National team volleyball player Tang Miao suffered a broken neck last week when he hit a wall while training for a friendly match in St. Petersburg, Russia, with his Shanghai-based club team, the state-run China Daily newspaper reported Tuesday.
Tang was reported to be unable to move his hands and legs and w as breathing with the help of a respirator. Li Zhi, a Chinese consular official in St. P etersburg, told the newspaper that the accident occurred when Tang was attempti ng to play a
ball that was going out of bounds.
Tang's injury la st Wednesday came three days after teenage gymnast Wang Yan broke her neck in China's national gymnastic s championships in Shanghai.
Wang was injured on June 10 when she fell from the uneven p arallel bars. Another Olympic hopeful, she was reported to be making some progress following the injury but newspaper reports s aid she is lik ely facing permanent paralysis.
Wang's injury is similar to one suffered by Sang Lan in the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York. Sang broke her neck making a pr actice vault.
Sang, who uses a wheelchair, is paralyzed from the chest down but will carry a torch in the Olympic to rch relay when the symbolic flame passes through Beijing.
