the purpose of univerisity education

the purpose of univerisity education

Part of a university education is the obvious training for a future career; various subjects and tests that all lead to the university degree, which brings career opportunities and higher pay. Knowledge of certain subjects and a college degree are both beneficial to have in terms of a successful future. Great emphasis is placed on this perception of what society considers success. If success is having plenty of money to buy material items, a degree can certainly prepare one for that. If success is measured in terms of the amount of knowledge acquired in certain subjects, a university education can also help one to achieve success. However, a university education goes beyond that. It is more than memorizing books and facts. It is more than a framed certificate on a wall that can be used to impress future employers. We all have identities away from our careers. If the objective of a university education is more than gaining the knowledge necessary to pass tests and get a degree, what is the true purpose of a university education?John Henry Newman wrote about the purpose and manner in which university education should be administered in his "The Idea of a University." In Discourse 5 of this writing, Newman says that with a university education, "a habit of mind is formed which lasts through life." In view of that, a university education should be designed to last a lifetime, not just through a career. In terms of knowledge and education, they should not be regarded as just a way to get ahead in the world. Also in Discourse 5, Newman says that "any kind of knowledge, if it be really such, is its own reward." So, the pursuit of knowledge should not be looked at in terms of what it is going to do for you in the future. It should be looked at as beneficial in itself. Knowledge is something that you gain that cannot be taken away from you. It is also something that you continue to gain throughout your life.。

写作范文The Aim of a University Education

写作范文The Aim of a University Education

The Aim of a University Education—by John Henry Newman If then a practical end must be assigned to a university course, I say it is that good members of society. Its art is the social life, and end is fitness for the world. It neither confines its views to particular professions on the one hand, nor creates heroes or inspires genius on the other. Workers indeed of genius fall under no art; heroic minds come under no rule; a university is not a birthplace of poets or of immortal authors, of funders of schools, or leaders of colonies, or conquerors of nations. It does not promise a generation of Aristotles or Newtons, of Napoleons or Washingtons, of Raphaels or Shakespeares, though such miracles of nature it has before now contained within its precincts. Nor is it content on the other hand with forming the critic or the experimentalist, the economist or the engineer, although such too it includes with its scope. But a university training is the great ordinary means to a great but ordinary end; it aims at raising the intellectual tone of society, at cultivating the public mind, at purifying the national taste, at giving enlargement and sobriety to the idea of the age, at facilitating the exercise of political power, and refining the intercourse of private life. It is the education which gives a man a clear, conscious view of his own opinion and judgments, a truthin developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force in urging them. It teaches him to see things as they are, to go right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant. It prepares him to fill any post with credit, and to maser and to master any subject with facility. It shows him how to accommodate himself to others, how to throw himself into their stat of mind, how to bring before them him own, how to influence them, how to come to an understanding with them, how to bear with them. He is at home in any society, he has common ground with every class; he knows when to speak and when to be silent; he is also to converse; he is able to listen; he can ask a question pertinently, and gain a lesson seasonably, where he has nothing to impart himself; he is ever ready, yet never in the way; he is a pleasant companion, and a comrade you can depend upon; he knows when to be serious and when to trifle, and he has a sure tact which enables him to trifle with gracefulness and to be serious with effect. He has the repose of a mind which lives in itself, while it lives in the world, and which serves him in public, and supports him in retirement, without which good fortune is but vulgar, and with which failure and disappointment have a charm. The art which tends to make a man all this, is in the object which it pursues as useful as the art of wealth or the art of health, though it is less susceptible of method, and less tangible, less certain, less complete in the its result.。

The university setting provides a unique opportunity for young adults to gain independence, develop self-awareness, and cultivate their own identities. the purpose of a university

the purpose of a university

The Purpose of a UniversityThe economy of our country has been developing at a high rate for more than 30 years. With the development of economy, there are more and more universities founded in our country. However, when it comes to what is the purpose of a university, there will be fierce discussions. In my opinion, the purpose of a university should be educating students to gain sound personality. There are some incidents showing that the personality education is very important. For example, Ma Jiajue killed all his roommates just for a trick they played on him. We learned from his teachers that Ma Jiajue was good at his courses and he usually got high grades in exams. What will happen when the students like Ma Jiajue go into our society? If the students gained more knowledge, they can achieve their goals, legal or illegal, more easily. That is to say, in this case, the more knowledge they have, the more dangerous they are. Although Ma Jiajue has his own personality problems, it is the university education that should be blamed.John Henry Newman, the famous British educationist, came up with the idea that university education is a great but ordinary means, which aims to improve society thought style, improve the public's intelligence accomplishment, make the national interest pure and provide real principle for the public enthusiasm. We can know from his idea that universities shouldn’t only focus on scientific researches and students’employment. What is more important is to teach the students how to be a person with sound personality. What can we call sound personality? In my eyes, sound personalityshould combine honesty, loyalty, kindness and responsibility together. I believe, with the sound personality, the graduates will be honest and loyal to both o f our country and society. They will be glad to help other people. So the graduates will contribute to the society construction. All in all, I think the purpose of a university should be training students’ sound personality. Only on this basis, the graduates can help build our society better. At the same time, they can lead a healthy and happy life through their lives.。

新GRE写作指导:The purpose of education教育的目的教育的目的应该是要创造出一个隔离于外界的学术环境。

这样的环境最理想因为这样可以使学生们不受功利的干扰而专注于重要的理念。

范文:Many people have the opinion that the purpose of education should be to create anacademic environment isolated from the outside world, which would be conducive for thestudents to focus on their studies without being disturbed by the practical concerns. However,as far as I am concerned, it is near sighted to set the students into an isolated academicenvironment, and such opinion is a misconception regarding the purpose of the education. It cannot be denied that some kind of academic fields need a peaceful and quiteatmosphere indeed, which help the students to give their most attention to their studies tosome extent. To pay more attention on their studies, students have to avoid involvingthemselves into some practical concerns, such as mean ambitions, love of comfort, devotionto material things, all of which would cost them lots of time, and influence their studiesconsequently. In this sense, it is a good will to create an ideal environment for students to pursue theirstudies. Many universities, colleges and institutions have laboratories with advancedequipment, libraries that allow students access for free, and often offer the scholarship for thosepotential students. The measures foregoing all indicate that the education make its effort toestablish an environment in which students could focus on their academic studies and reducethe disturbance from the outside campus togreatest degree.。

The Purpose of a Universities Education
In recent years, due to the expanding enrollment,of universities, the number of college students is increasing and is becoming more and more. Although that, students complain that they can't find satisfactory job, and entrepreneurs complain that it is difficult for them to meet talented students. Therefore, there is a heated discussion about the purpose of a universities education among the public in our society. What should be the purpose of college education?
No doubt, different people, or even different universities, may see it quite differently. The majority of people believe that the purpose of a universities education is means to an end. In other words, universities should aim at cultivating the students’ overall abilities so that they can realize their targets eventually. On one hand, social progress needs overall-developed college graduates in the long run. When we ask ourselves the question: “What kind of college graduates does the society need?” the answer is just too obvious: ones with a good command of the knowledge in their own fields of study, ones with a healthy body, ones with a healthy mentality, ones with good communication skills, ones with team-work spirit, ones with creative, innovative ability or the ability for implementation. On the other hand, an overall developed graduate would find a job more easily. However, others argue that the purpose of a universities education is an end in itself. Because they have the aspiration
to have a well-paid job that they like and that points to a good prospect in the future. So they must learn the special theory knowledge and master special skills by the universities education. They have only one goal, so they will be easier to success.
Admittedly, it is praiseworthy of universities to be concerned about their graduates’ job-hunting issues, for after all, anyone should first solve the problem of making a living before talking about later on development. However, no one would ever deny the fact that to cultivate the overall abilities of the students is always closely related to and in no way conflicts or contradicts good job opportunities. So my point of view is the purpose of a universities education is means to an end.。
