Osteoporosis
Good afternoon, dear leaders and teachers, it’s my honor to stand here making a speech. My topic is Osteoporosis—The Silent Disease .Many people will say that why do you call this. OK I’ll explain it in the next talking. I’ll talk about it from four aspects.
The definition, clinical symptoms, risk factors, treatments and preventions.
It is a metabolic disorder characterized by low bone mass and stractural deterioration of bone tissue , leading to bone fragality and increased susceptibility to fractures. Normal bone is composed of protein, collagen, and calcium, all of which give bone its strength. It can be suggested by X-rays and confirmed by using bone mineral density (BMD). Characreristics: Osteoporosis is called the silent thief because bone loss without symptoms the first time you know about it is when a bone snaps unexpectedly. the typically suffers are women who are after menopause, because of the body’s lack of estrogen. And it is common in adults.
Clinical symptoms: A person is often not aware that they have osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. But there are symptoms of osteoporosis. They include:Backache. A gradual loss of height and an accompanying stooped posture. Fractures of the spine, wrist, or hip.
Call Your Doctor About Osteoporosis If: You develop a backache or sudden severe back pain, which can indicate a spinal compression fracture caused by osteoporosis. Dental X-rays reveal a loss of bone in the jaw, which can be a sign of osteoporosis.
Certain factors are linked to the development of OP. the risk factors are ;female gender, advanced age, family hitory of OP, thin and small body frames, lack of exercises , tobacco use, excessive alcohol use, low estrogen levels, early onset menopause, low calcium intake, vitamin D deficiency, and certain medications which can damage bone.
The destination of Op treatment is to prevent bone fractures
by stopping bone loss and by increasing bone density and strength. Prevention of this is as importmant as treatment because, while there are treatments for OP, there is currently no cure. Therefore, it is never too early or too late to start the prevention progrom. (1) Life style changes: include avoiding cigaraettes smoking, minimizing alcohol intake ,engaging in regular weight bearing exercise, and consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin .(2) Use of medications such as : estrogen to increase bone formation, Calcitonin. Bisphosphonates and Tamoxifen that can help prevent or slow bone loss and may even increase bone density. (3) exercise : A lifelong habit of weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or biking, will also help build and maintain strong bones. The greatest benefit as you grow older, You don't have to do too much, to get the most benefit from exercise. It is suggested that 30 minutes brisk walking five days a week is all you need. Add in a little weightlifting, and that's even better. The reason behind this recommendation is that the flexing of bones during exercise is thought to prompt the body to lay down more calcium in the bones. It's always smart to ask your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you already have osteoporosis or other health problems.
Summary: Osteoporosis is a problem that can affect anyone in their later years and you should do all that you can to keep your bones strong. It is the duty of nurses and other health professionals to help disseminate the crucial information, so that millions can be spared from this “silent disease”.。
