cricket-anything with a round ball. I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year, he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future. In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite (冻疮), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled (雪橇) up and over rocky ice. Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis.

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the 'wash up'. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract (减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account - let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called "wash-up" earlier this month -- the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Education Group (PFEG) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft (透支) as a way of extending their spending power. PFEG predicts that these young people will find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.
The UK has been in the worst financial recession (衰退) for generations. It does seem odd that-unless parents step in-young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
28. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that _______.
A. students have been taught to manage their finances
B. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtract
C. the author complains about the school education
D. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out
29. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _______.
A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money
B. promote the connection of schools and families
C. ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D. appeal for the curriculum of financial education
30. According to PFEG, _______.
A. It's not easy for them to get into financial trouble if the teenagers are taught to manage money
B. only half of the 17-year-old teenagers spend their money as planned
C. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids
D. it is not easy for people to keep good habits long
31. A poll is mentioned to ________.
A. show the seriousness of the financial recession
B. stress the necessity of the curriculum reform
C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents
D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal
D
Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.
A little overlearning, on the other h and, is really necessary for one’s future development.
32. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?
A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.
D. Stories for children are easy to remember.
33. The author explains the law of overlearning by_________.
A. presenting research findings
B. setting down general rules
C. making a comparison
D. using examples
34. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is_______.
A. a result of overlearning
B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems
D. a basic step towards advanced studies 35. What is the author’s opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams.
B. It’s helpful only in a limited way.
C. It’s possible to result in poor memory.
D. It increases students’ learning interest.

Knowing that you are thinking about having college education in China, I’m very glad and firmly believe that it’s a right choice.
You are sure to benefit a lot from it. With four years spent in China, you’ll have a further understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the present Chinese society, which will in turn make it easy for you to make more friends and start your own business after graduation. If you don’t want to stay in China, the ability of speaking Chinese and experiences of living in China can also guarantee you many good job opportunities.
As for me, I would be more than happy to help you. You can stay in my place before you settle down. All in all, if I were you, I wouldn’t let go of such a good chance. Write to me soon to let me know your decision.
Yours,
Li Hua。
