1. What does Part I tell us? About the mother and her hope for her daughter.

This reflects an important Chinese value concerning the relationship between parents and children. The parents do everything they can for their children and the children are supposed to feel grateful to their parents.
After the girl made up her mind to resist change, the conflict between mother and daughter escalated.

(3) She had lost everything in China and had come to America with the determination to make things better. She was transferring her own hopes to her daughter.

(2) humorous interpretation: Jesus Christ did everything with holy dignity. But when he was lifted out of the straw manger as a newborn baby,, he cried just like other babies, without holy dignity, but with indignity. Yet, because he was the holy Son of God, his indignity was holy, too.
