I’ve been putting my passport to good use lately. I use it asa coaster and to level unsteady table legs. It makes an excellent cat toy.
Welcome to the pandemic (疫情) of disappointments. Canceled trips or ones never planned in case they would be canceled. Family reunions, study-abroad years, lazy beach vacations. Poof. Gone. Ruined by a tiny virus, the list of countries where our passports are not welcome is long.
It is not natural for us to be this sedentary (定居的). Travel is in our genes. For most of the time our species has existed, we've lived as nomadic (游牧的) hunter-gatherers. But what if we can't move? What's a traveler to do? There are ways to answer that question. "Despair," though, is not one of them.
We are an adaptive species. We can tolerate brief periods of forced sedentariness. We pass the days glancing through old travel journals and Instagram posts. We gaze at souvenirs. All this helps. For a while. Then, what hope do we have?
I think hope lies in the very nature of travel. Travel involves wishful thinking. It demands a leap of faith, and of imagination, to board a plane for some faraway, land. Travel is one of the few activities we engage in not knowing the outcome and are drunk in that uncertainty. Nothing is more forgettable than the trip that goes exactly as planned.
That's one reason why I have faith in travel's future. In fact, I'd argue travel is an essential activity. It's not essential the way hospitals and grocery stores are essential. Travel is essential the way books and hugs are essential. Food for the soul. Right now, we're between courses, enjoying where we've been, expecting where we'll
go. Maybe it'sZanzibarand maybe it's the campground down the road that you've always wanted to visit.

Some of the oldest art in human history is being damaged, scientists say. And climate change may be speeding up its loss. Newresearch reports that ancient rock art in Indonesian caves is degrading over time, as bits of rock slowly break off from the walls. It's a huge loss for human history.
Salt crystals(结晶)building up on the walls are a key part of the problem, the study suggests. These salt crystals go into the cave walls, changing sizes as temperatures rise and fall. This process causes the rock to slowly break down.
Salt crystals may become larger when exposed to repeated changes between wet conditions and periods of drought. These kinds of changes are expected to become more obvious as the climate continues to warm.
In particular, the researchers say, climate change may cause more intense El Nino(厄尔尼诺)events in the future. These events can strengthen the kinds of conditions that help salt crystals form Scientists are still debating the exact influence of climate change on El Nino, a natural climate cycle that drives changing patterns of warming and cooling in thePacific Ocean.
The new study, led by Jillian Huntley, examined 11 ancient cave art sites in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The researchers found evidence of salt formation at all 11 sites. It's merely a small part There are more than 300 known eave art sites around the region. In one of my Management classes in college, I sat in the same seat in the front every day. Every single day I sat there. Then one day I found myself sitting next to some foreign guy who hardly spoke English. His name was Albert. The most advanced thing that I had heard him say in English was: “Wow, my muffin(松饼) is really good!”.
This guy also had a habit of stacking(堆放) every item he owned in the exact space I sat. His bag,his food, his books, and his phone were always right on my desk space. Then every single time I walked into class, Albert would greet me with a broad smile: “Ah, Tom. You’re here. Okay,” and start wildly clearing my desk of his belongings. He then made it a habit to say “Ready for class, yeah?” and gave me a high five. Every morning the guy sitting next to me would give me a high five.
I was always annoyed with this guy. I was thinking: “Dude, you know I sit here in this seat every day. Why are you always stacking your stuff(物品) here?” And the last thing I wanted to do was give a guy who hardly spoke my language high fives at 8 in the morning! Just get your stuff off my desk!
But today I came to class and was a few minutes late. I was standing outside the classroom because I had to
send a quick text. But through the door out of the comer of my eye, I could see my space—Of course, the usual—my desk was filled with Albert’s belongings!
As I was standing there on my phone, I noticed another guy who was also late walking into the class before me and trying to take my seat since it was closest to the door.
