She was a special girl, with a heart sensitive to beauty, with a heart full of sympathy. She looks the world with her crystal eyes; she tells us her life in poetic language, a life about growing up, about setbacks, about enthusiastic dreams, about happiness as well as sadness.
She has a dream. A dream which is impossible for the women at that time to achieve. She wants a house of her own, not her daddy's, not her husband's, a house all her own. A house with her porch(阳台) and her pillow（枕头）, a house full of her books and her stories, a house with two shoes waiting beside the bed.

It is a book about a girl, Esperanza, whose name in English means hope. She lives in Mange Street, in an area of immigrants. Her whole family immigrate to America from Spanish. In that area, the yellow race are discriminated against by the white people. The shadow has been following her since she was a little girl, which often makes her sad. The writer, Sandra has undergone similar things which happened to Esperanza.
