①When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
②People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry (=unclear). Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted.
③People who are far-sighted(远视) suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
④Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
⑤Having two good eyes is important for judging(判断) distances(距离). Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle. To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object’s relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

Many parents think that their children’s bedrooms are too untidy. Maybe they’re right, but an untidy bedroom isn’t always a bad thing. Somebody is calling for help in the water. You want to jump in and save them but that might put you in danger. What do you do?
Soon this won’t be your problem anymore because a robot swimmer called Swumanoid will be on-hand to help.
Scientists from Japan created this robot to swim like an Olympic athlete. They mapped the swimmer’s body and how every part moves, so the robot could swim exactly as a human does.
Swumanoid can swim the backstroke (仰泳) and the front crawl (自由泳) at a speed of 0.64 meters a second, which is a third of the human world record according to the Daily Mail (每日邮报).
Motomu Nakashima, the leader of the study, hopes that robots like Swumanoid can act as lifesavers in the future, helping those in trouble.
Besides saving lives, Swumanoid can also be used in swimming research. It can test water resistance (阻力) and work out how people swim. The information collected is expected to help scientists find ways to improve a swimmer's skills.
Unlike human swimmers, robots don’t get tired from doing the same stroke (泳姿) again and again, so they do not slow down. Thus, they can collect information more correctly.
But the robot is not yet ready to take the place of lifesavers by the pool. Scientists say there are still certain things that need to be improved, such as the motors and waterproofing (防水的) design.
