So quit, I can get another girl to take your job in five minutes…one who really wants
it. Andy, be serious. You are not trying. You are whining…You have no idea how
many legends have walked these halls. And what’s worse, you don’t care. Because
this place, where so many people would die to work, you only deign to work. And you
want to know why she doesn’t kiss you on the forehead and give you a gold star on
your homework at the end of the day. Wake up, sweetheart.

Andy Sachs, a girl graduated from North Western University, came to New York to be
a journalist and sent letters out everywhere. However, she got a job to be an assistant
for Miranda, the editor in chief of Runway, by chance. Runway is one of the most
famous magazines, so rustic Andy was laughed at by her colleagues at the outset. She
didn’t like this job, although a million girls would kill for it. She thought fashion had
nothing to do with her and was not willing to change herself for this job. She just
needed to stick it out for a year and then she could get a job at any magazine she
wanted.
Andy worked for Miranda day and night, not only to be Miranda’s second assistant
but also to be her nurse on call. She had to prepare for her breakfast, hang her clothes
and bag, serve for the twins and so on. She was tired of this job and didn’t know what
else she can do. Because if she did something right, it’s unacknowledged, Miranda
didn’t even say thank you; but if she did something wrong, Miranda would become
vicious. Andy felt unfair and she would like a little credit for the fact that she was killing herself trying.
When she was punished by Miranda once, she turned to Nigel. However, Niger
pointed out that she was not trying, and she was just whining. Then she changed her
attitude towards this job and became fashionable to adapt to Runway. There was no
doubt that she was an excellent girl and made great progress little by little. Eventually,
she surpassed Emily and was admitted by Miranda, the devil wears Prada.
Think of myself, I was disappointed when I knew that I should learn English in USTB.
I was fond of public administration and dreamed of being a public functionary after
graduation. To be honest, I learned English just to take exams and in fact I tried my
best to get good grades by using exam-oriented skills when I was in high school.
However, I was chosen by English major unexpectedly.
After failing to be elected endlessly and failing to pass my midterm in close reading
and listening class, I had been despondent for a long time and didn’t knew what could
I do to. I told myself stick it out for a year and I would get away from English
forevermore and I could do what I wanted to do. Like Andy, I thought I had nothing to
do with English. I comforted my

self that I had done everything I could think of, but in
fact, I was also not trying; I was just complaining-blame everyone and everything but
not myself.
Luckily, I encountered my Nigel. When I complained my life to brother, to my
surprise, he didn’t show any sympathy to me and just said “Life is a struggle and
things do not always go your way but that is what you enjoy about life. The most
important thing is to never give up. Dear, you must fight for what you want.” I
checked myself and tried myself to change my situation. I understood that I indeed spent lots of time learning English but I never put my heart
in it. I always regarded English as a burden and reminded myself I didn’t belong to
there. There was no doubt that I can’t make progress due to the influence of this
negative attitude. Then I tried to search the joy of learning English and make myself
to love English. I made progress although I was still not outstanding. I believe that if I
put my heart into it, anything will be possible.
Not anyone can do what he wants forever; not everything can always go your way.
Ask yourself if you really do anything you can do before complaining about life.
Accept your life and try your best to fight for what you want, and you will be
successful.
Question
Why did Andy stay at Runway when she was laughed at by her colleague, but quit
when she got promotion?
Andy wanted to stay at Runway at first because if she sticked it out for a year, she
could get a job at any magazine she wanted. But when she adapted to this life, she
found something ugly in the field of entertainment. She also didn’t want to live an
exquisite life at the cost of losing boyfriend, family, friends and trueness.
Was Miranda a devil?
I would like to regard her as a queen rather than a devil. She was just doing her job at
any rate. No one can do better than her as the chief editor of Runway. Family and enterprise, which one is more important?
Maybe it depends on you. Andy chosen to her family, friends and live a normal life,
while Miranda continued to live an exquisite life and was busy with Runway. There is
no doubt that we all want to both family and enterprise. When they don’t have conflict,
it just ok, but when they have conflicts, we must make a decision seriously.
