铝酸盐水泥应用于化学建材，首先是为了加快凝结和硬化，以达到增加工作效率的目的。但实际上，铝酸盐水泥主要组分的反应基础应该是铝酸钙与硫酸钙与氢氧化钙或来源于硅酸盐水泥中的氢氧化钙之间的反应，反应产物钙矾石是一种含有大量结合水的矿物（含32 H2O），通过这一矿物的快速形成，可以使硬化体在短时间内具有低的残余水。从而可降低硬化体因水份蒸发而产生大的收缩。
