More Money,More Smiles?Money can't buy happiness, right? Well, not true.According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper understanding of the relationship between what we earn and how we feel. The results may seem a bit obvious: Yes,people with higher incomes are, broadly speaking, happier than those who struggle to get by.But the research also shows you have to spend strategically if you expect those bank notes to put a smile on your face. Here are some ways to better spend your money:1.In a recently published study,Ryan Howell, associate professor of psychology at San Francisco State University in the US,found that when people don't have much money to spare, they tend to stick to material goods.“People think that experiences are only going to provide temporary happiness,”he told The Wall Street Journal in an interview.“...but they actually provide both more happiness and more lasting value.”2.No matter how much money you spend on something and how special that product is,you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another object.People adapt to having new stuff, and anything that disrupts1 that adaptation is likely to prolong2 happiness, says an Atlantic article.Buying small things can give us frequent small pleasures that are different each time they occur,as they forestall3 adaptation.3.Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Canada, found that in countries as diverse as Canada,South Africa and Uganda, giving away money consistently made people happier. This was even true when people were giving away even when they themselves were relatively poor.4.It's also important to consider how what you're buying will affect how you spend your time. For example, that big house in the suburbs may seem like a good idea, but according to TheWall Street Journal,a 2004 study by researchers from University of Zurich in Switzerland found that people with longer commutes4 reported lower overall life satisfaction, all other things being equal.Notes1.disrupt v.干扰2.prolong v.延长3.forestall v.领先4.commute n.通勤TaskChoose the suitable heading for each paragraph.(There is one extra answer you don't need.) And they're a lot more likely to die of stroke than we are anyway.Other researchers, perhaps sponsored by the garlic and onion industry, suggested that the French Paradox effect is due to garlic and onions.Claude Fischler,a nutritional sociologist at INSERM,says all these single hypotheses are more wishful thinking than science.Last May,researchers writing in the British Medical Journal came up with the least cheerful hypothesis of all. They argued that it's just a matter of time before the French—who are in fact eating more hamburgers and French fries these days—catch up with Americans, and begin suffering the same high rates of cardiovascular disease. These researchers,Malcolm Law and Nicholas Wald, call this the“time lag explanation”for the French Paradox. As far as they are concerned, the McDonaldization(this is a French catch—all terms for the importation of fast food and other American cultural horrors)of France will continue at a frantic pace, and it is as inevitable that Frenchmen will start keeling over(晕倒)of heart attacks as it is that French women will eventually wear jean shorts and marshmallow tennis shoes on the street of Paris.1.What is French Paradox according to this passage?()A.The French people eat unhealthy food and die of heart attacks each year.B.The French eat more nutritious food than Americans but don't worry about getting heart diseases.C.The French are much less likely to suffer from heart disease although they eat lots of fatty food.D.The French are as likely to die of heart attacks as Americans although they eat less fatty food.2.What can be learned from the second paragraph?()A.The French drink as much wine as people elsewhere.B.The French wine has different relaxing effects compared with other wines.C.Drinking red wine now and then benefits people a lot.D.The French drink wine in ways different from people of other countries.3.The underlined word“dicey”(para.3)probably means().A.satisfactoryB.strangeC.UncertainD.interesting4.In the author’s opinion, the French Paradox has something to do with().A.red wineB.olive oilC.garlic and onionsD.something unknown5.What can we infer from this passage?()A.The French Paradox is due to the influence of American values.B.The French Paradox will disappear in time.C.The McDonaldization of France has little effect on the French's health.D.There is no such thing as the French Paradox. 1.A college course can help you find work or get.A.promisedB.professedC.profiledD.promoted【答案】D【解析】本题考查词义辨析。

Underwhat circumsta nces is one type better tha n the other?Answer: Context switching between user threads is quite sinniliir to switching between kernel threads, although it is dependent on the threads library and how it maps user threads to kernel threads. In general, context switching between user threads involves taking a user thread of its LWP and replacing it with another thread. This act typically involves saving and restoring the stttte of the registers.6.3 Consider the following set of processes, with the length of the CPU-burst time given inmillisec on ds:Process Burst Time PriorityP1103P211P323F414P552The processes are assumed to have arrived in the order P l, F2, F3, F4, P5, all at time 0.a.Draw four Gantt charts illustrati ng the executi on of these processes using FCFS, SJF, a non preemptive priority (a smaller priority n umber implies a higher priority), and RR (qua ntum = 1) scheduli ng.b.What is the turnaround time of each process for each of the scheduling algorithms in part a?c.What is the waiting time of each process for each of the scheduling algorithms in part a?d.Which of the schedules in part a results in the minimal average waiting time (over all processes)? An swer:Answer;a.The four Gantt charts areb.Turnaround timeFCFS RR SJF Priority101919 16112 1 113 741814421919149 6 匚Waiting time (turnaround time minus burst time)FCFS RR SJF Priority卩】0996Pz10100心115216P*133118Ps14941d. Global Warming Threatens PenguinsRising temperatures and melting ice have affected the habitats of five species of the swimming birds. The Emperor Penguin(帝企鹅)The Emperor, the largest and most recognizable of the penguin species,is thought to be the most vulnerable1 of all life in Antarctica.According to the World Wildlife Federation, the overall rise in temperatures is melting sea ice and reducing the penguin's habitat.Penguin(阿德利企鹅)In the last 25 years, the population has dropped 65% because of a loss of sea ice and increased competition for food among other penguin species.Penguins require dry land for breeding grounds2and stone pebbles3for creating nests, but their greater survival depends on the presence of sea ice.King Penguin(王企鹅)At present, there are 2 million pairs of breeding King Penguins on the islands north of Antarctica.Research suggests that the population is decreasing as sea temperatures warm and the birds are forced to travel longer distances to find food.Chinstrap Penguin(帽带企鹅)The warming temperatures have been beneficial for Chinstrap penguins for the present, which breed and nest on land with no ice or snow. The warmer temperatures have forced the Chinstraps further south, which is putting them in competition with Emperors and for food.Gentoo Penguin(巴布亚企鹅)Much like the Chinstrap, the Gentoo birds protect their eggs by turns and prefer slightly warmer temperatures. In the last few decades, their numbers have been on the decrease. The decrease in population is likely due to reduced food availability as a result of overfishing and climate change. With their food source under threat and their habitat evaporating4,Emperor,Adelie,King,Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins all share Antarctica's uncertain future.Notes1.vulnerable adj. TaskFill in the blanks according to the passage.Penguin答案 rgest 2.nests 3.distances 4.south 5.eggsPeriod One Warm-up & Lesson 1Global WarmingⅠ. 短语自测1.be_harmful_to对……有害2.at_risk处于危险中3.a_number_of一些4.in_the_last_few_decades在过去的几十年里5.beyond_one's_control不受……的控制6.pump_into注入7.speed_up加快速度8.look_ahead展望未来9.refer_to提及,参考10.in_turn依次,轮流11.lead_to引起,导致12.take_action采取行动13.switch_off关掉14.add_up把……加起来15.ahead_of在……前面1.The water level has risen so_high_in_several_places_that many homes are at risk from flooding.
