I helped gather like two dozen eggs from their coop. Pretty neat!While we were at my grandparents' farm, we took a little day trip to this place called Pioneer Village. It's basically a whole little town set up to look like it was from the 1800s, with old-timey buildings, costumes, activities and everything. We got to see what schoolhouses were like back then, with the tiny wooden desks and chalk slates instead of modern schools today. We watched some cool demonstrations too, like blacksmithing, candle-making, and spinning wool. For lunch we had the most delicious chicken pot pies cooked in a vintage cast iron stove. That night we camped out in a teepee and roasted marshmallows over the campfire. So fun!A couple weeks later, my family went on a big hiking trip in the mountains. We drove a few hours from home to this huge national park full of gorgeous forests, valleys, waterfalls and rivers. Our cabin was right at the base of the tallest mountain peak. Day one, we did a pretty easy hike along a stream to this swimming hole with freezing cold water that felt so refreshing inthe summer heat. The next couple days were more challenging with long, steep hikes to panoramic viewpoints looking out over the valleys below. As hard as the uphill climbs were, it was 100% worth it to be able to see those breathtaking views! We saw so much cool wildlife too - chipmunks, squirrels, deer, and even a black bear from a safe distance. On our last day, we went whitewater rafting down this raging river. That was definitely the biggest adrenaline rush of the trip! Our guide had us paddling hard and navigating through all these gnarly rapids sections. We got drenched from the massive waves splashing over the raft, but it was a riot. What an epic trip.Towards the end of the summer, my parents sent me to this awesome two-week overnight camp I go to every year called Camp Greylock. I've made so many great friends there over the years from all over the country. We stay in these cool log cabin villages divided up by age groups. Every day we got to pick different awesome activities like climbing wall, archery, kayaking, horseback riding, zip lining, arts and crafts, and more. The zipline was probably my favorite - soaring over the trees and lake was such an incredible feeling! In the evenings we had all-camp events like talent shows, dances, and campfires with s'mores and singing silly songs. On the last night, they did this giant fireworksshow over the lake that was flat-out amazing. I'm definitely going back again next summer if my parents let me!So yeah, that pretty much sums up my awesome summer. Of course I also spent a bunch of time just hanging out with my friends in the neighborhood riding bikes, having sleepovers, seeing movies, swimming at the local pool and all that regular summer stuff. The second we stepped off the plane, we could feel the warm breeze and smell the ocean air. Our hotel was right on the beach too. The first few days we spent just relaxing on the sandy shores, swimming in the crystal blue waters, and soaking up the Hawaiian sun.Then the real fun activities started! One day we went on this awesome snorkeling expedition. We had to take a boat out into the middle of the ocean to get to the best snorkeling spot. It was like being in the middle of an animated movie!Another day, we went on a long kayaking tour around the island. We paddled for miles, stopping along the way to explore little coves and inlets. Our guide taught us all about the plants and wildlife that are native to Hawaii too.My absolute favorite activity though was when we went on a helicopter tour of the whole island. The pilot even let me sit up front for part of the ride which was super cool. Seeing Hawaii from that perspective was an experience I'll never forget.On the last few days of our trip, we spent more time just hanging out and relaxing at the beach and pool areas of our hotel. We went boogie boarding, built massive sandcastles, and I even learned how to do a little hula dancing which was hilarious. We were all really sad to leave Hawaii behind, but we made so many amazing memories that will last forever. The whole fair was just pure awesomeness.After our trip to Oak Grove, we came back home and I invited my two best friends over for a few sleepovers. Julia, Zoe and I have been besties since kindergarten. We did all our classic sleepover things - staying up late watching movies, giving each other makeovers, prank calling cute boys, and gorging on pizza and candy. So much giggling! One night we stayed up practically all night just talking and playing truth or dare. I was super excited because I had never been out of the country before. We drove up to Vancouver and stayed in a hotel right downtown. The city was huge with all these massive skyscrapers everywhere. It felt like I was in a totally different world!The first couple days we just explored around Vancouver. We went to this awesome science museum called Science World. It had all these interactive exhibits that were so neat. My favorite was the virtual reality experience where we got to walk on the moon! We also went up to the top of the Vancouver Lookouttower and could see the whole city below us. It was a little scary being up so high, but the view was breathtaking.Then we drove out to Whistler, which is this big ski resort area a couple hours away. Even though it was summer, there was still snow on the mountains! We went hiking and saw some amazing waterfalls and lakes. The best part was when we went on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola ride between two mountain peaks. Hanging in the air with the peaks soaring up beside us was a little scary at first, but I got used to it and the views were just spectacular.After Whistler, we headed over to Vancouver Island to do some camping for a few days. We stayed at a campground right on the ocean in Tofino. I loved falling asleep every night to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. During the days we went tidepooling, which is when you walk along the shore during low tide and look in all the little pools for sea creatures. We found tons of neat starfish, crabs, and other critters!One of the highlights was when we went on a whale watching tour by boat. The guide said we were pretty much guaranteed to see whales since it was peak season. Well, she was right - we ended up seeing three different pods of gray whales! Seeing those massive whales surface just a few hundred feetfrom our boat was amazing. Some even did tricks where they breached the water fully. I'll never forget that experience.On another day, we went kayaking along the coast. Even though I was a little nervous about tipping over at first, our guide helped me get the hang of it. We paddled along the shoreline and even went into some cool sea caves with narrow entrances. I felt like a little explorer! Kayaking ended up being one of my favorite parts of the whole trip.After camping, we headed inland to the city of Victoria, which is the capital of British Columbia. We visited their amazing Butchart Gardens, which had just about every type of flower and plant you can imagine all arranged in these intricate gardens. The rose garden was my favorite - the smell was heavenly! We also toured some historic spots like Craigdarroch Castle.Our last stop was taking the ferry back over to Vancouver. On the ferry ride, we were lucky enough to see a pod of orcas swim right alongside the boat! I had never seen killer whales in the wild before. They were spectacular animals.Once we made it back to Vancouver, we spent our last couple days doing typical city touristy stuff. We walked around the harbors and parks, went up more observation towers, anddid lots of fun shopping. I bought a bunch of souvenirs for my friends and family back home.Finally, after two amazing weeks, it was time to make the long drive back home to Spokane. I didn't want the vacation to end! That trip to Canada was easily one of the best times of my entire life so far. First, my family went on a big trip to Hainan Island for two weeks. We stayed in a really cool resort right on the beach. When we landed, everything just looked and felt so different from home. The writing on signs was in these cool looking characters I had never seen before. And there were skyscrapers and buildings everywhere, with tons of people walking around.Our first stop was Tiananmen Square, which is this massive open plaza in the center of Beijing. Our tour guide told us it's one of the biggest public squares in the world and super important in Chinese history and culture. We took a ton of pictures in front of the huge portrait of Mao Zedong hanging there. That guy kind of freaked me out to be honest.Next we visited the Forbidden City, which is this incredible palace complex right next to Tiananmen Square. It has something like 9,000 rooms inside! We wandered through the courtyards and halls learning about how the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties lived there hundreds of years ago. My favorite part was the Imperial Garden - it was so beautiful and peaceful.After a few days exploring Beijing, we took a bus out to the Great Wall of China. Let me tell you, that thing is HUGE! It just keeps going up and down the mountains as far as you can see. We had to climb up tons of steep steps, but it was worth it for the amazing views. Our guide said the wall is over 5,500 miles long in total - I can't even imagine how long it must have taken to build something that massive.From Beijing, we took an incredibly fast bullet train to Xi'an, which is in central China. This was one of my favorite cities on the trip. Xi'an is where the world-famous Terracotta Warriors were discovered - they're these life-size soldier statues buried with China's first emperor over 2,000 years ago to protect him in the afterlife. Each warrior statue is different and there are thousands of them! It was mind-blowing seeing them all lined up in these massive pits.We also visited the Muslim Quarter in Xi'an, which is this vibrant neighborhood full of mosques, markets, and the most delicious food stalls. I tried so many new and tasty dishes like lamb kebabs, flatbread, and these amazing meat sandwiches. I don't think I've ever eaten that much in my life!Our last stop was Shanghai, which is this incredibly modern and glitzy city on the eastern coast. The skyline at night wasstunning, with bright lights and skyscrapers reflecting on the river. We spent a whole day wandering around the Bund waterfront area, which had British colonial buildings on one side and ultra modern towers on the other side.We also went up to the top of the Shanghai Tower, which is the second tallest building in the world. The views from up there were insane - you could see the entire city stretching out in every direction. I felt so small looking out over the vast urban landscape.My favorite part of Shanghai was the Shanghai Disneyland park though. We spent two full days riding every roller coaster and meeting characters like Mickey, Mulan, and the Star Wars gang. I went on the TRON Lightcycle coaster like five times because it was so awesome. Being at Disneyland, but in the middle of this futuristic Chinese city, felt like something from a sci-fi movie.After two weeks traveling around China, I have to say it was the best trip ever. I learned so much about China's deep history and culture, but also got to experience its modern cities that feel lightyears ahead. The food was out of this world delicious everywhere we went. And we did tons of fun activities like riding the bullet train, exploring palaces, and going to Disneyland.I'll never forget things like hiking on the Great Wall, seeing the Terracotta Warriors up close, and the jaw-dropping Shanghai skyline at night. China just felt like a total other world compared to my little town. It was all so exciting and different in the best way possible.
