We have to retrain ourselves to see the positive in even the most challenging times.Measuring pain level is difficult. Scientists have long known that pain’s intensity is difficult to measure, because people experience pain differently. The question is especially important because of the increasing misuse of painkilling drugs in some countries.US doctoral degrees may be losing their appeal for many people who seek higher education in the US. The common study period of 2 to 4 years is not enough. The highest level of education offered by American college or university is the doctoral degree.

Title: The Spark That Ignites a Prairie Fire.In the vastness of the prairie, a single spark, no bigger than a pinprick, falls unnoticed amidst the dry grass. It lies there, quiescent, waiting for a breeze tofan its flames. As the wind blows, the spark turns into a flicker, and soon, a small flame dances in the air. This is the beginning of a phenomenon that has fascinated humanity for centuries the potential of a tiny spark to transforminto a devastating fire. The prairie, with its vast expanse of dry grass, provides a prime setting for this transformation. The grass, deprived of moisture, is highly combustible, and the slightest spark can ignite it. As the flame consumes the grass, it grows stronger, feeding on the dry fuel. The fire spreads rapidly, consuming everything in its path, leavingin its wake a charred landscape. This metaphorical representation of a small spark igniting a prairie fire encapsulates the profound impact of individual actions. Just as a spark can transform into a devastating fire, so can a single individual's actions spark change in the world. Consider the revolutions that have been sparked by the courage and determination of a few individuals. Their actions, initially small and seemingly insignificant, grew into movements that shook the foundations of nations and改写后的句子,altered the course of history. The power of individual action is not limited to grand revolutions. It can manifest in smaller, yet significant ways. A single teacher's dedication to education caninspire a generation of students. A scientist's perseverance in research can lead to groundbreaking discoveries. An artist's creativity can inspire others to express their inner selves. These actions, though small in scale, have the potential to kindle a spark that ignites a larger movement. Moreover, the impact of individual actions is notconfined to the present. They echo through the ages, shaping the future. A single act of kindness can inspire a chain reaction of goodwill,温暖他人心灵, creating a more compassionate society. A single decision to protect the environment can spark a movement that leads to sustainable development and a healthier planet. However, the potential for individual actions to spark change also carries a responsibility. Our actions, whether big or small, have consequences. A thoughtless action can cause harm, while a conscious choice can bring about positive transformation. Therefore, we must be mindful of our actions and their potential to ignite change. In conclusion, the spark that ignites a prairie fire serves as a powerful metaphor for the impact of individual actions. Just as a small spark can transform into a devastating fire, so can a single individual's actions spark significant change in the world. We must recognize the power of our actions and use them to create a positive impact, kindling sparks that ignite movements of good in the world.。

If you are feeling down, e_ercise may help pick you up. Although researchersdisagree on this issue , one review of past studies found that long-term e_ercise, especially when it includes long-lasting, strenuous training sessions, has about as much of an effect on depression as psychotherapy.Working out helps you deal with stress in your job, relationships or any area of life —possibly because e_ercise is a form of stress itself and helps condition your body to deal with it.When Australian researchers compared people who did 30 minutes of aerobic e_ercise three times a week to those who practiced progressive rela_ation techniques, they found that the former group responded better to acute stress and had lower blood pressure. Even a little e_ercise can make you think less an_iously. Studies have shown that any amount of e_ercise, from abrisk_ minute walk to an intense aerobics or weightlifting session seems to decrease feelings of an_iety.Working out regularly may make you smarter now and lessen the possibility that you’ll lose brain function as you age. According to a recent animal study at the University of Illinois, e_ercise can actually help the brain develop new cells. In several studies, regular weight training or aerobic e_ercise was shown to improvethe quality and duration of sleep. Naturally, this can make you less fatigued and be able to function better during the day. Like meditation, hobbies or any other leisure activity, e_ercise gives your mind a needed break from everyday thoughts, responsibilities and commitments. Finally, there’s one more reason to keep e_ercising. When you work out regularly, your body simply functions better you are better, healthier and less likely to suffer painful physical conditions. And that just plain feels good. mental[ ment?l]adj. 1. Appetite is the keenness of living; it is one of the senses that tell you that you are still curious to e某ist, that you still have an edge on your longings and want to bite into the world and tasteits multitudinous flavors and juices.

By appetite, of course, I don’t mean just the lust for food, but any condition of unsatisfied desire, any burning in the blood that proves you want more than you’ve got, and that you haven’t yet used up your life.

Wilde said he felt sorry for those who never got their heart’s desire, but sorrier still for those who did.

An English student in one of my seminars typified what happens when hidden patterns clash. He was quite obviously experiencing strain in his relationships with Americans. Nothing seemed to go right and it was quite clear from his remarks that we did not know how to behave. An analysis of his complaints showed that a major source of irritation was that no American seemed to be able to pick up the subtle clues that there were times when he didn’t want his thoughts intruded on. As he started it, “I’m walking around the apartment and it seemsthat whenever I want to be alone my roommate starts talking to me. Pret ty soon he’s asking ‘What’s the matter?’ and wants to know if I’m angry. By then I am angry and say something.”It took some time but finally we were able to identify most of the contrasting features of the American and Britain problems that were in conflict in this case. When the American wants to be alone he goes into a room and shuts the door---he depends on architectural features for screening. For an American to refuse to talk to someone else present in the same room, to give them the “silent treatment,” is the ultimate form of rejection and a sure sign of great displeasure. The English, on the other hand, lacking rooms of their own since childhood, never developed the practice of using space as a refuge from others. They have in effect internalized a set of barriers, which they erect and which others are supposed to recognize. Therefore, the more the Englishman shuts himself off when he is with an American the more likely the American is to break in to assure himself that all is well. Tension lasts until the two get to know each other. The important point is that the spatial and architectural needs of each are not the same at all. The lowest animalBy Mark TwainMan is the only animal that robs his helpless fellow of his country-takes possession of it and drives him out of it or destroys him. Man has done this in all the ages. There is not an acre of ground on the globe that is in possession of its rightful owner, or that has not been taken away from owner after owner, cycle after cycle, by force and bloodshed.Man is the only Slave. And he is the only animal who enslaves. He has always been a slave in one form or another, and has always held other slaves in bondage under him in one way or another. In our day he is always some man's slave for wages, and does the man's work; and this slave has other slaves under him for minor wages, and they do his work. The higher animals are the only ones who exclusively do their own work and provide their own living.Man is the only Patriot. He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people's countries, and keep them from grabbing slices of his. And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"-with his mouth.Man is the Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion-several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven. He was at it in the time of Caesars, he was at it in Mahomet's time, he was at it in the time of the Inquisition, he was at it in France a couple of centuries, he was at it in England in Mary's day, he has been at it ever since he first saw the light, he is at it today in Crete-as per the telegrams quoted above*-he will be at it somewhere else tomorrow. The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out, in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.Man is the Reasoning Animal. Such is the claim. I think it is open to dispute. Indeed, my experiments have proven to me thathe is the Unreasoning Animal. Note his history, as sketched above. It seems plain to me that whatever he is he is not a reasoning animal. His record is the fantastic record of a maniac. I consider that the strongest count against his intelligence is the fact that with that record back of him he blandly sets himself up as the head animal of the lot: whereas by his own standards he is the bottom one.In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which the other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived together in peace; even affectionately.

We neglect our health, time with our family and to appreciate the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love to do. One day when we look back, we will realize that we don’t really need that much, but then we cannot turn back time for what we have missed.Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Life is definitely not about work! Work is only necessary to keep us living so as to enjoy the beauty and pleasures of life.Life is a balance of work and play, family and personal time. You have to decide how you want to balance your your priorities, realize what you are able to compromise but always let some of your decisions be based on your instincts. Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim of human existence. So, take it easy, do what you want to do and appreciate nature. Life is fragile. Life is short. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both of the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices, marked A), B), C) and D),and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the center. Now let’s begin with the 4eight short conversations.1. M: I hear you have got a role in a play. How on earth did you get it? W: Well, when I heard the role was coming up, I read the book until I could learn the lines by heart and understood the character, and I had an interview and got it.Q: How did the woman get the role in the play?2. W: You seem to have had perfect health all your life.M: Yeah. I don’t remember ever having to see a doctor. I eat healthy food and take plenty of exercise. Most of all, I look at the sunny side even when things aren’t going so well.Q: What is the most important reason for the man’s perfect health?3. M: Susan, how long have we known each other?W: Let’s see. We met when you interviewed me for a teaching job. I wasthen in my senior year at college, and it has already been eight years since I graduated.Q: What can we learn from the conversation?4. W: It seems my pet dog doesn’t like the new place. He seemed to be happy all day in the countryside.M: Just ignore it. I still remember you were unhappy when you first moved here, but you are happy now. He is sure to overcome in a week or two.Q: What should the woman do according to the man?5. M: You said you got a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Where did you get it?W: From Iowa State University. And I’m now working on my master’s. That’s part of the reason I applied for this position.Q: What can we learn about the woman?6. W: Do you daydream? Scientists recently say its advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.M: Even if it is true, I don’t think you can achieve success without hard work. It can at most make you feel happy.Q: What does the man probably agree with?7. M: Did you see the Oscar ceremony last night? It was also a fashion show when the stars stepped onto the red carpet. There were all types of fancy gowns and dresses.W: That is a great help for you and I believe you will be inspired by the show.Q: What can be inferred from the conversation?8. W: You are late again. Haven’t I told you that you should be away from home half an hour earlier?M: I’m sorry. I did do that and the traffic is OK, but I can’t do nothing in my car when I saw an old man in need of help.Q: What accounts for the man’s being late? Now you will hear the two long conversations.Conversation OneW: Tom, I suppose you must have heard about that great piece of concrete falling onto a car in that terrible accident in South Street yesterday, haven't you?M: Yes, I saw it in the paper. From a 200-foot-high building, wasn't it? W: Oh, yes. I saw the car; it was totally damaged.M: You usually park your car around there, don't you, Brenda?W: Yes, I left it in that very spot a couple of days ago, but yesterday it was parked up the road.M: You are lucky then.W: Out of luck, you mean! I'd be very pleased if my old car were smashed to bits. I could claim from the insurance company then.M: But you used to be so proud of your car, weren't you?W: It was years ago, but now there are all sorts of repairs to be done, and I just haven't got enough spare cash to put it right.M: You can always sell it, can't you?W: Few people are stupid enough to buy a car in that condition.M: The woman whose car was crushed yesterday was very annoyed about it. She will be given a new car by the builders, though.W: Yes, but her car was a specially built model that can't be replaced, and there was hardly anything wrong with it.M: Well, that's life! When people actually want to get rid of their cars, this sort of thing seldom happens, does it?Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.9. What happened in South Street yesterday?10. Why does the woman consider herself unlucky in terms of yesterday's accident?11. How did the owner feel when she knew her car was crushed? Conversation TwoW: Good morning, sir. I understand that you have been robbed.M: I certainly have.W: When did that happen?M: About two hours ago.W: Why didn't you report it?M: I couldn't. I was bound.W: Please tell me exactly what happened.M: I was sitting in this room watching television when someone knocked on the door. Without thinking, I opened it.W: That wasn't very wise, sir.M: I know. I was expecting my wife, you see, and thought it was her.W: You should never open a door without looking to see who it is.M: Yes, I know, I regret it very much.W: What happened?M: Two men pushed into the flat. One of them threatened me with a knife while the other bound me.W: Can you remember what they look like?M: I'm afraid not. They were both wearing stockings over their faces. W: What did they take?M: My wallet, with $300 in it, my wristwatch, some of my wife's jewelry from our bedroom, and a silver photo frame.W: They don't seem to have done much damage to the flat.M: No. They had just begun to search my house when the dogs next door began to bark. They ran off then leaving me bound. It was some time before my wife returned and released me. I phoned the police at once.W: My men began searching the area as soon as we received your call. I can't promise you that we'll recover your property but we'll certainly doour best.Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.12. What does the woman do?13. Why did the man open the door without thinking?14. Why can't the man remember what the robbers look like?15. Why did the robbers leave in a hurry?Section BDirections: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages, at the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A),B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1with a single line through the center.Passage OneOld age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were 18 years old. The findings came from a survey of more than 340 000 adults in the United States. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress. Arthur Stone in theDepartment of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their 50s. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early 70s. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their 70s and 80s. The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men. The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory proposed by some sociologists is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16. What does the speaker say about the recent findings?17. What can be inferred about happiness from the passage?18. According to the researchers, why do people become happier when they get older?Passage TwoBarbara Jordan was a lawyer, educator and member of Congress. She was well known for her powerful, thoughtful speeches. Barbara Charline Jordan was born in the southern city of Houston, Texas in 1936. Her father was a Baptist minister. In high school, Barbara heard a speech from a black woman lawyer. She decided to become a lawyer herself. Later, Miss Jordan attended the all-black college, Texas Southern University in Houston. She led a championship debating team and became known for her speaking skills. She finished at the top of her class. Then she went onto Boston University law school in Boston, Massachusetts. After she finished law school, Miss Jordan returned to Texas. She began to work as a lawyer. She also discovered she was interested in politics. In 1966, she decided to seek a seat in the Texas Senate and won. Barbara Jordan became the first black person to serve in the Texas Senate since 1883. Citizens there wanted to link their state with states to the east and west. By the 1920s, federal officials wanted to connect state roads to provide a shorter, faster way across the country. So a plan was developed to connect existing state roads into one long national highway. United States Highway 66 was established on November 11, 1926. It was one of the first federal highways. It crossed eight states. It was 3 800 km long. It passed through the center of many cities and towns. It crossed deserts, mountains, valleys and rivers. In the 1930s, people suffered through the Great Depression. In Oklahoma, many poor families lost their farms because of dust storms. So they traveled west to California on Route 66 in search of a better life. In the 1950s,holiday travel brought more and more families out West to explore. Route 66 represented the spirit of movement and excitement. Later, people were getting fewer and fewerkicks on Route 66. By 1962, parts of the road were closed because they were in poor condition. The federal government was building bigger highways. Cars and trucks could travel at higher speeds. People started driving on these new interstate highways instead of the old Route 66.

A single spark can start a prairie fire. This ancient Chinese proverb speaks to the immense power that can arise from even the smallest of beginnings. It is a testament to the transformative potential that lies within each of us, and the remarkable ways in which individual actions can catalyze sweeping change. At the heart of this proverb is the recognition that great things often have humble origins. A single spark may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but when ignited, it can quickly grow into a raging inferno that consumes everything in its path. Similarly, a single individual, armed with determination and a clear vision, can spark a movement that ultimately transforms the world around them.History is replete with examples of how a single spark has led to monumental shifts. The civil rights movement in the United States, for instance, began with the courageous act of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus. This simple yet defiant gesture ignited a fire that would eventually topple the unjust system of Jim Crow and advance the cause of racial equality. Similarly, the self-immolation of Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi in 2010 set off a wave of protests that would come to be known as the Arab Spring, leading to the overthrow of several authoritarian regimes in the Middle East. These examples illustrate the profound impact that a single individual can have, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. They demonstrate that the power to effect change is not the exclusive domain of the powerful or the privileged, but rather lies within the reach of ordinary people who are willing to take a stand and challenge the status quo.Of course, the spark that ignites a prairie fire is not always a deliberate act. Sometimes, it is the result of a chance occurrence or a series of seemingly unrelated events that coalesce in unexpected ways. The Arab Spring, for instance, was fueled by a complex mix of economic, social, and political factors that had been simmering for years, until Bouazizi's self-immolation provided the catalyst that set the region ablaze.Similarly, in the realm of scientific discovery, a single serendipitous observation or a chance encounter with a new idea can lead to breakthroughs that transform our understanding of the world. The discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, for example, was the result of a chance encounter with a petri dish contaminated by amold that produced a substance capable of killing bacteria. This chance occurrence would go on to revolutionize the field of medicine and save countless lives. The power of the single spark, however, is not limited to grand, world-changing events. It can also be seen in the everyday lives of individuals who choose to make a difference in their own communities. A teacher who inspires a student to pursue their passions, a community organizer who mobilizes their neighbors to address a pressing social issue, or a local business owner who creates jobs and supports the economic development of their town – these are all examples of how a single spark can ignite a fire that transforms the lives of those around it.In a world that often feels overwhelming and beyond our control, the idea of the single spark can be a source of hope and empowerment. It reminds us that we all have the capacity to make a difference, no matter how small or insignificant our individual actions may seem. It encourages us to embrace our agency and to take responsibility for the changes we wish to see in the world. At the same time, the proverb also cautions us to be mindful of the potential consequences of our actions. Just as a single spark can start a prairie fire, our choices and behaviors can have far-reaching and often unpredictable effects. It is a reminder that we must approachour lives and our interactions with others with care, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility. In conclusion, the idea of the single spark that can start a prairie fire is a powerful metaphor for the transformative potential that lies within each of us. It challenges us to recognize the profound impact that our individual actions can have, and to embrace our role as agents of change in the world. Whether we are working to address global challenges or to make a difference in our own communities, the spark of our own determination and commitment can ignite a fire that burns brighter than we could ever imagine.。

ExerciseA state of physical and mental health allows you to take part in exercise fortably and enjoyably so that it doesn’t hurt, so that you can look forward to it, and feel good afterwards. If you are feeling down, exercise may help pick you up. Although researchersdisagree on this issue, one review of past studies found that long-term exercise, especially when it includes long-lasting, strenuous training sessions, has about as much of an effect on depression as psychotherapy.Working out helps you deal with stress in your job, relationships or any area of life —possibly because exercise is a form of stress itself and helps condition your body to deal with it.When Australian researchers pared people who did 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week to those who practiced progressive relaxation techniques, they found that the former group responded better to acute stress and had lower blood pressure. Even a little exercise can make you think lessanxiously. Studies have shown that any amount of exercise, from abrisk10 minute walk to an intense aerobics or weightlifting session seems to decrease feelings of anxiety.Working out regularly may make you smarter now and lessen the possibility that you’ll lose brain function as you age. Aording to a recent animal study at the University of Illinois, exercise can actually help the brain develop new cells. In several studies, regular weight training or aerobic exercise was shown to improvethe quality and duration of sleep. Naturally, this can make you less fatigued and be able to function better during the day. Like meditation, hobbies or any other leisure activity, exercise gives your mind a needed break from everyday thoughts, responsibilities and mitments. Finally, there’s one more reason to keep exercising. When you work out regularly, your body simply functions better you are better, healthier and less likely to suffer painful physical conditions. And that just plain feels good. mental['ment?l]adj.
