新编汽车专业英语原文及翻译PPT课件
The way engine cylinders are arranged is called engine configuration. In-line engines have the cylinders in a line. This design creates a simply cast engine block. In vehicle applications, the number of cylinders is normally from 2 up to 6. Usually, the cylinders are vertical. As the number of the cylinders increase, the length of the block and crankshaft can become a problem. One way to avoid this is with a V configuration. This design makes the engines block and crankshaft shorter and more rigid.

Unit 03 Automobile Engines 汽车专业英语教学课件
Unit 3 Automobile Engines
Engines have at least two valves per cylinder, one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Many newer engines are using multiple intake and exhaust valves per cylinder for increased engine power and efficiency[4].
Unit 3 Automobile Engines
The crankshaft is located below the cylinders on an inline engine, at the base of the V on a V-type engine and between the cylinder banks on a flat engine[3]. As the pistons move up and down, they turn the crankshaft just like your legs pump up and down to turn the crank that is connected to the pedals of a bicycle.
Unit 3 Automobile Engines
A common configuration is to have one camshaft located in the engine block with the lifters connecting to the valves through a series of linkages. The camshaft must be synchronized with the crankshaft so that the camshaft makes one revolution for every two revolutions of the crankshaft. In most engines, this is done by a "Timing Chain" (similar to a bicycle chain) that connects the camshaft with the crankshaft.

III. Exercises
❖The motor vehicle engine is basically a device for converting the internal energy stored in its fuel into mechanical energy. It is classified as an internal combustion engine by virtue of this energy conversion taking place within the engine cylinders . Since the term ”energy” implies the capacity to perform work, the engine is thus able to propel the vehicle along the road and, within limits, overcome unwanted opposition to its motion arising from rolling friction and air drag. To facilitate this process the engine is combined with a transmission system.

I. Pre-questions
Where is the clutch in the automobile?
A-engine B-clutch C-clutch pedal D-manual transmission
When the clutch pedal is (depressed ), the rod and shaft with yoke shift the release bearing and support (assembly ). The release bearing presses the inner ends of the release levers, the pressure (driven) is moved away from the (plate) disk and the clutch is disengaged. To (engage ) the clutch, the pedal is released, the release bearing and support assembly is shifted back by the return spring thus releasing the releasing levers so that the pressure plate is forced by its springs towards the flywheel to clamp the driven disk and engage the clutch.

Most automatics use the planetary gear sets (Fig.3-11). The commonly used planetary gears are Ravigneaux set and Simpson set. A simple planetary-gear set can also be connected to the upstream or downstream of a Ravigneaux set or Simpson set. Either the outer gear or the sun gear may be held stationary, providing more than one possible torque multiplication factor for each set of gears. Also, if all three gears are forced to rotate at the same speed, the gear set forms, in effect, a solid shaft.
3.5.2 Continuously variable transmission The gear ratios of the gearbox are varied continuously over the entire working range by the primary and secondary V-pulley pairs. The primary V-pulley is driven by the planetary gear when the forward or reverse gear clutch is engaged. It drives the secondary V-pulley via a steel belt or a chain. Variation of the gear ratio is achieved by axial displacement of a diagonally opposite pulley half in each case. In this way, the effective pulley radius (rwl and rw2) are continuously varied in opposition, i.e. bigger or smaller (Figure.3-15). Displacement of the pulley halves is effected by the two pressure-controlled primary and secondary cylinders. The main components and operation of a CVT are shown in Figure 3-16 and 3-17.

3.5 Automatic gearbox
Different types of automatic gearboxes are used: semiautomatic and fully automatic. Semiautomatic gearboxes. The power flow is interrupted by automatic clutch disengagement and cut in by clutch engagement, e.g. automatic clutch system (ACS). Shifting of gears to change the gear ratios and direction of rotation is performed manually by operating a shift lever. Fully automatic gearboxes. The power flow is automatically interrupted or cut in as required. Shifting of gears to change the gear ratios is performed automatically by electro-hydraulic or electropneumatic control. Automated manual transmission, Converter transmission and CVT are fully automatic gearboxes. The features of the gearboxes are listed in the Table 3-1.
