In my opinion, college education is more advisable for most people. First, college education is systematic and students can learn a lot in many aspects, unlike vocational education, which tends to focus on just one job skill, college education enables students to develop different potentials. Second, to obtain a higher degree, such as a master’s degree, one has to go through college education to get a bachelor’s degree first.

大学英语四级考试模拟试题7(标准答案)Part I WritingComputer Games on CampusToday, many college students are absorbed in playing computer games. Maybe there is some truth in the statement that computer games are fun and will train one's reactivity, determination, and attention. However, the merits of computer games can never compensate for the negative effects they have. First, it is very time-consuming to play computer games. The game fans have sacrificed almost all their time thus they have no time to attend class, to take exercises, or even to date. Upon graduation many will regret that they have wasted the precious college time on nothing. Second, those who play computer games excessively would easily fall victim to various illnesses. For example, game fans always fix their eyes on the screen; therefore, they are likely to be near-sighted. Third, the game fans, who spend their time before the lifeless computers, usually overlook their relationship with others. They would find that they have some mental or psychic problems.

Every person perceives himself to have a sort of invisible shield surrounding his physical body. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he bumps onto someone, he feels obligated to apologize. But the size of a person’s“ comfort zone” depends on his cultural ethnic origin. For example, in casual conversation, many Americans stand about four feet apart. In other words, they like to keep each othe r“ at arms length”, people in Latin or Arab cultures, in contrast, stand very close to each other, and touch each other often. If someone from one of those cultures stands too close to an American while in conversation, the American may feel uncomfortable and back away. When Americans are talking, they expect others to respond to what they are saying. To Americans, polite conversationalists empathize by displaying expressions of excitement or disgust, shock or sadness. People with a “poker face”, whose emotions are hidden by a deadpan expression, are looked upon with suspicion. Americans also indicate their attentiveness in a conversation by raising their eyebrows, nodding, smiling politely and maintaining good eye contact. Whereas some cultures view direct eye contact as impolite or threatening, Americans see it as a sign of genuineness and honesty. If a person doesn’t look you in the eye, American might say, you should question his motives—or assume that he doesn’t like you. Yet with all the concern for eye contact, Americans still consider staring — especially at strangers —to be rude.1. Molecular Genealogy (宗谱学) can use this unique identification provided by the genetic markers to link people together into family trees. Pedigrees (家谱) based on such genetic markers can mean a breakthrough for family trees whereinformation is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. There are many communities and populations which have lost precious records due to tragic events such as the fire in the Irish courts during Civil War in 1921 or American slaves for whom many records were never kept in the first place. The main objective of the Molecular Genealogy Research Group is to build a database containing over 100,000 DNA samples from individuals all over the world. These individuals will have provided a pedigree chart of at least four generationsand a small blood sample. Once the database has enough samples to represent the world genetic make-up, it will eventually help in solving many issues regarding genealogies that could not be done by relying only on traditional written records. Theoretically, any individual will someday be able to trace his or her family origins through this database. In the meantime, as the database is being created, molecular genealogy can already verify possible or suspected relationships between individuals“. For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but no written record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarilyat the Y chromosome (染色体)),” explains Ugo A. Perego, a member of the BYU Molecular Genealogy research team.6. People in a large area may possess the same DNA thread becauseA. DNA is characteristic of a regionB. they are beyond doubt of common ancestryC. DNA strand has the ability to identify individualsD. their unique identification can be provided via DNA7. The possible research of family trees is based on the fact thatA. genetics has achieved a breakthroughB. genetic information contained in DNA can be revealed nowC. each individual carries a unique record of who he is and how he is related to othersD. we can use DNA to prove how distant an individual is to a family, a group or a population8. The Molecular Genealogy Research Group is building a database for the purpose ofA. offering assistance in working out genealogy-related problemsB. solving many issues without relying on traditional written recordsC. providing a pedigree chart of at least four generations in the worldD. confirming the assumption that all individuals are of the same origin9. If two men suspected for some reason they have a common ancestor,A. we can decide according to their family treeB.we can find the truth from their genetic markersC. we can compare the differences in their Y chromosomeD. we can look for written records to prove their relationship10. Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?A. We are a walking, living, breathing record of our ancestorsB. Many American slaves did not know who their ancestors were.C. An adopted child generally lacks enough information to prove his identity.D. Molecular genealogy can be used to prove a relationship between individuals. PASSAGE 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In recent years, teachers of introductory courses in Asian American studies have been facing a dilemma nonexistent a few decades ago, when hardly any texts in that field were available. Today, excellent anthologies(文选)and other introductory texts exist, and books on individual Asian Americans are published almost weekly. Even professors who are experts in the field find it difficult to decide which of these to assign to students; non-experts who teach in related areas and are looking for writings for and by Asian American to include in survey courses are in an even worse position.A complicating factor has been the continuing lack of specialized one-volume reference works on Asian Americans, such as biographical dictionaries or desktop encyclopedias. Such works would enable students taking Asian American studies courses (and professors in related fields) to look up basic information on Asian American individuals, institutions, history, and culture without having to wade through mountains of primary source material. In addition, given such works. Asian American studies professors might feel more free to include more challenging AsianAmerican material in their introductory reading lists, since good reference works allow students to acquire on their own the background information necessary to interpret difficult or unfamiliar material.11. The author is primarily concerned with ______.A. responding to a criticismB. describing a course of studyC. discussing a problemD. evaluating a past course of action12. The “dilemma”(Line 2, Para.1) can best be characterized as being caused by the necessity to make a choice when faced with a ______.A. lack of acceptable alternativesB. lack of strict standards for evaluating alternativesC. preponderance of bad alternatives as compared to goodD. multitude of different alternatives13. Biographical dictionaries and desktop encyclopedias are _____A. primary source materialsB. introductory textsC. excellent anthologiesD. reference materials14. Which of the following is implied about the introductory courses in Asian American studies a few decades ago?A. The range of different textbooks that could be assigned for such courses was extremely limitedB. The texts assigned as readings in such courses were often not very challenging for studentsC. Students often complained about the texts assigned to them in such coursesD. Such courses were offered only at schools whose libraries were rich in primary sources15. According to the passage, the existence of good one-volume reference works about Asian Americans could result in ______.A. increased agreement among professors of Asian American studies regarding the quality of the sources available in their fieldB. an increase in the number of students sighing up for introductory courses in Asian American studiesC. increased accuracy in writings that concern Asian American history and cultureD. the inclusion of a wider range of Asian American material in introductory reading lists in Asian American studiesIV Translate the following paragraph into English. These jobs can be found in a variety of sectors, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, and sustainable agriculture. One of the main drivers of the growth of green jobs is the increasing concern about climate change. As countries around the world strive toreduce their carbon emissions, they are investing in renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro power. This has led to the creationof many jobs in the renewable energy sector, from research and developmentto installation and maintenance. In addition to renewable energy, energy efficiency is also an important area for green jobs. Improving the energy efficiency of buildings, for example, can reduce energy consumption and costs. Jobs in this area includeenergy auditors, who assess the energy use of buildings and recommend improvements, and insulation installers, who install energy - saving materials in buildings.Waste management is another sector with significant potential for green jobs. Recycling and composting are two important waste management methods that can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Jobs in waste management include waste collectors, recyclers, and composting operators.Sustainable agriculture is also an emerging area for green jobs. Organic farming, for example, uses natural fertilizers and pesticides, which are better for the environment. Jobs in sustainable agriculture include farmers, agricultural technicians, and food processors who work with organic products.44. What are green jobs?A) Jobs that are only related to renewable energy.。

However, finding this balance is crucial to their success and well-being.To balance study and work effectively, students should first prioritize their tasks and set clear goals. By dividing their time between study and work, they can better manage their responsibilities and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, students should create a schedule that allows them to allocate sufficient time for both academic studies and work commitments. This will help them stay organized and on track towards achieving their goals. In my own experience, I have found that setting priorities and creating a schedule have been instrumental in balancing study and work. By staying organized and disciplined, I have been able to successfully manage my academic workload while also excelling in my job. Moreover, I have learned the importance of self-care and taking breaks when needed to avoid burnout.Overall, balancing study and work requires careful planning and self-discipline. Studies have shown time and time again that children who are exposed to arts programs perform better in school, have higher test scores, and are more likely to attend college.Despite this knowledge, arts programs in schools are often the first to receive cuts when budgets are tight. School administrators and policymakers often view arts programs as non-essential, focusing instead on core subjects like math and science. This mentality severely limits the opportunities availableto children and deprives them of the numerous benefits that arts education can provide.Arts programs play a crucial role in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Through visual arts, music, dance, and theater, children are able to explore their creativity and express themselves in ways that may not be possible through traditional subjects. Additionally, arts programs help to develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, and self-confidence, which are essential for success in today's society.Furthermore, arts education has been shown to have a positive impact on students' academic performance. Studies have found that students who participate in arts programs tend to have higher grades, better attendance records, and improved social and emotional development. The large and harmonious families were once very enviable. The four generation family used to be very common, in the past. As a result of this tradition, many young people continue to live with their parents after marriage. Today, the tradition is changing. With the improvement of housing conditions, An increasing number of young couples choose to live apart from their parents. But the connection between them remains strong. And many old people still have to look after their grandchildren. Young couples also get around to visit their parents, especially during the holidays, such as the spring festival and Mid-autumn Festival.资料来源于网络,大学生资源共享平台收集整理。

Every person perceives himself to have a sort of invisible shield surrounding his physical body. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he bumps onto someone, he feels obligated to apologize. But the size of a person’s“ comfort zone”depends on his cultural ethnic origin. Pedigrees (家谱) based on such genetic markers can mean a breakthrough for family trees where information is incomplete or missing due to adoption, illegitimacy or lack of records. For example, if two men sharing the same last name believe that they are related, but nowritten record proves this relationship, we can verify this possibility by collecting a sample of DNA from both and looking for common markers (in this case we can look primarilyat the Y chromosome (染⾊体)),” explains Ugo A. PASSAGE 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In recent years, teachers of introductory courses in Asian American studies have been facing a dilemma nonexistent a few decades ago, when hardly any texts in that field were available. Today, excellent anthologies(⽂选)and other introductory texts exist, and books on individual Asian Americans are published almost weekly. According to the passage, the existence of good one-volume reference works about Asian Americans could result in______.A. increased agreement among professors of Asian American studies regarding the quality of the sources available in their fieldB. an increase in the number of students sighing up for introductory courses in Asian American studiesC. increased accuracy in writings that concern Asian American history and cultureD. the inclusion of a wider range of Asian American material in introductory reading lists in Asian American studiesIV Translate the following paragraph into English. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference? Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does. He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, foreign viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products. At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called“Strawpocalypse,” a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash. Made of 168,000 plastic straws collectedfrom several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled. Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source (来源)of plastic pollution, but they’ve recently come under fire because most people don’t need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled. Every straw that' s part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes. Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear. In a piece from 2018, Von Wong wanted to illustrate (说明) a specific statistic: Every 60 seconds, a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic, "Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they’d been dumped(倾倒)from a truck all at once.Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.35. What are Von Wong’s artworks intended for? [单选题] *A. Beautifying the city he lives in.B. Introducing eco-friendly products.C. Drawing public attention to plastic waste.(正确答案)D. Reducing garbage on the beach.36. Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3? [单选题] *A. To show the difficulty of their recycling.(正确答案)B. To explain why they are useful.C. To voice his views on modern art.D. To find a substitute for them.37. What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers? [单选题] *A. Calming.B. Disturbing(正确答案)C RefreshingD. Challenging.38. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? [单选题] *A. Artists' Opinions on Plastic SafetyB. Media Interest in Contemporary ArtC. Responsibility Demanded of Big CompaniesD. Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures(正确答案)BDuring an interview for one of my books, my interviewer said something I still think about often. Annoyed by the level of distraction(干扰)in his open office, he said, “That’s why I have a membership at the co working space across the street —so I can focus. "His comment struck me as strange. After all, co working spaces also typically use an open office layout (布局). But I recently came across a study that shows why his approach worksThe researchers examined various levels of noise on participants as they completed tests of creative thinking. They were randomly divided into four groups and exposed to various noise levels in the background, from total silence to 50 decibels(分贝),70 decibels, and 85 decibels. The differences between most of the groups were statistically insignificant; however, the participants in the 70 decibels group—those exposed to a level of noise similar to background chatter in a coffee shop-significantly outperformed the other groups. Since the effects were small, this may suggest that our creative thinking does not differ that much in response to total silence and 85 decibels of background noise. But since the results at 70 decibels were significant, the study also suggests that the right level of background noise—not too loud and not total silence—may actually improve one’s creative thinking ability. The right level of background noise may interrupt our normal patterns of thinking just enough to allow our imaginations to wander, without making it impossible to focus. This kind of "distracted focus" appears to be the best state for working on creative tasks. So why do so many of us hate our open offices? The problem may be that, in our offices, we can't stop ourselves from getting drawn into others’ conversations while we’re trying to focus. Indeed, the researchers found that face-to-face interactions andconversations affect the creative process, and yet a co working space or a coffee shop provides a certain level of noise while also providing freedom from interruptions. 39. Why does the interviewer prefer a co working space? [单选题] *A. It helps him concentrate.(正确答案)B. It blocks out background noise.C. It has a pleasant atmosphere.D. It encourages face-to-face interactions.40. Which level of background noise may promote creative thinking ability? [单选题] *A. Total silence.B. 50 decibels.C. 70 decibels.(正确答案)D. 85 decibels.41. What makes an open office unwelcome to many people? [单选题] *A. Personal privacy unprotected.B. Limited working space.C. Restrictions on group discussion.D. Constant interruptions.(正确答案)42.What can we infer about the author from the text? [单选题] *A. He's a news reporter.B. He’s on office manager.C. He's a professional designer.D. He's a published writer.(正确答案)CWhen you were trying to figure out what to buy for the environmentalist on your holiday list, fur probably didn’t cross your mind. But some ecologists and fashion (时装)enthusiasts are trying to bring back the market for fur made from nutria(海狸鼠).Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles. “It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur-unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year”, says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种).It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us.” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field. The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s,the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur. Then there’s Righteous Fur and its unusual fashion. Model Paige Morgan says,”To give people a guilt-free option that they can wear without someone throwing paint on them-1 think that’s going to be a massive thing, at least here in New York.” Designer Jennifer Anderson admits it took her a while to come around to the opinion that using nutria fur for her creations is morally acceptable. She trying to come up with a label to attach to nutria fashions to show it is eco-friendly.43. What is the purpose of the fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn? [单选题] *A. To promote guilt-free fur.(正确答案)B. To expand the fashion market.C. To introduce a new brand.D. To celebrate a winter holiday.44. Why are scientists concerned about nutria? [单选题] *A. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library. My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old .It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.I always read ,using different voices ,as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it !It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books .Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on form generation to generation. As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and 1 think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. But how you say it can be quite tricky. If you say to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …”what follows that “but”can render the apology ineffective: ”I had a bad day”or “your noise was giving me a headache ”leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done. Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent”does not commit a person to any specific improvement. These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe sayingsorry shows weakness, Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies.But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become a ware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not.36.If a mother adds ”but”to an apology,________.A) she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized.B) she does not realize that the child hasbeen hurtC) the child may find the apology easier to acceptD) the child may feel that he owes her an apology37.According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset”most probably means”_______”A)You have good reason to get upsetB)I’m aware you’re upset ,but I’m not to blameC)I apologize for hurting your feelingsD)I’m at fault for making you upset38.It is not advisable to use the general, all-covering apology because______.A)it gets one into the habit of making empty promisesB)it may make the other person feel guiltyC)it is vague and ineffectiveD)it is hurtful and insulting39.We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry______.A)the complexities involved should be ignoredB)their ages should be taken into accountC)parents need to set them a good exampleD)parents should be patient and tolerant40.It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is _________.A)a social issue calling for immediate attentionB)not necessary among family membersC)a sign of social progressD) not as simple as it seemsPart III Vocabulary (20minutes)41.Some people believe that since oil is scarce, the ____of the motor industry is uncertain.A)terminal B)benefit C)fate D)estimate42.To speed up the ______of letters, the Post Office introduced automatic sorting.A)treatment B)delivery C)transmission D)departure43.These overseas students show great ______ for learning a new language.A)enthusiasm B)authority C)convention D)faith44.The defense lawyer was questioning the old man who was one of the ______of the murder committed last month.A)observers B)witnesses C)audiences D)viewers45.Politically these nations tend to be ______,with very high birth rates but poor education and very low levels of literacy.A)unstable B)reluctant C)rational D)unsteady46.The chairman was blamed for letting his secretary ________too much work last week.A)take to B)take out C)take away D)take on47."You try to get some sleep. Because it is bad! Those are not the most encouraging words to hear just before eating lunch at one of Hong Kong's smartest British restaurants, Alfie's by KEE, but head chef Neil Tomes has more to say."The past 15 years or so have been a noticeable period of improvement for food in England," the English chef says, citing the trend in British cuisine for better ingredients, preparation and cooking methods, and more appealing presentation. Chef such as Delia Smith, Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay made the public realise that cooking - and eating - didn't have to be a boring thing. And now, most of the British public is familiar even with the extremes of Heston Blumenthal's molecular gastronomy, a form of cooking that employs scientific methods to create the perfect dish."It's no longer the case that the common man in England is embarrassed to show he knows about food," Tomes says. There was plenty of room for improvement. The problems with the nation's cuisine can be traced back to the Second World War. Before the war, much of Britain's food was imported and when German U-boats began attacking ships bringing food to the country, Britain went on rations(配给)."As rationing came to an end in the 1950s, technology picked up and was used to mass-produce food," Tomes says. "And by then people were just happy to have a decent quantity of food in their kitchens."They weren't looking for cured meats, organic produce or beautiful presentation; they were looking for whatever they could get their hands on, and this prioritisation of quantity over quality prevailed for decades, meaning a generation was brought up with food that couldn't compete with neighbouring France, Italy, Belgium or Spain. Before star chefs such as Oliver began making cooking fashionable, it was hard to find a restaurant in London that was open after 9pm. But in recent years the capital's culinary(烹饪的) scene has developed to the point that it is now confident of its ability to please the tastes of any international visitor. With the opening of Alfie's in April, and others such as The Pawn, two years ago, modern British food has made its way to Hong Kong. "With British food, I think that Hong Kong restaurant are keeping up," says David Tamlyn, the Welsh executive chef at The Pawn in Wan Chai. "Hong Kong diners are extremely responsive to new ideas or presentations, which is good news for new dishes."Chefs agree that diners in Hong Kong are embracing the modern British trend. Some restaurants are modifying the recipes(菜谱)of British dishes to breathe new life into the classics, while other are using better quality ingredients but remaining true to British traditional and tastes.Tamlyn is in the second camp. "We select our food very particulary. We use US beef, New Zealand lamb and for our custards(牛奶蛋糊) we use Bird's Custard Powder," Tamlyn says. "Some restaurants go for custard made fresh with eggs, sugar and cream, but British custard is different, and we stay true to that."Matthew Hill, senior manager at the two-year-old SoHo restaurant Yorkshire Pudding, also uses better ingredients as a means of improving dishes. "There are a lot of existing perceptions about British food and so we can't alter these too much. We're a traditional British restaurant so there are some staples(主菜) that will remain essentially unchanged."These traditional dishes include fish and chips, steak and kidney pie and large pieces of roasted meats. At Alfie's, the newest of the British restaurants in town and perhaps the most gentlemen's club-like in design, Neil Tomes explains his passion for provenance(原产地). "Britain has started to become really proud of the food it's producing. It has excellent organic farms, beautifully crafted cheeses, high-quality meats."However, the British don't have a history of exporting their foodstuffs, which makes it difficult for restaurants in Hong Kong to source authentic ingredients."We can get a lot of our ingredients once a week from the UK," Tamlyn explains. "But there is also pressure to buy local and save on food miles, which means we take our vegetables from the local markets, and there are a lot that work well with British staples."The Phoenix, in Mid-Levels, offers the widest interpretation of "British cuisine", while still trying to maintain its soul. The gastro-pub has existed in various locations in Hong Kong since 2002. Singaporean head chef Tommy Teh Kum Chai offers daily specials on a blackboard, rather than sticking to a menu. This enables him to reinterpret British cuisine depending on what is available in the local markets."We use a lot of ingredients that people wouldn't perhaps associate as British, but are presented in a British way. Bell peppers stuffed with couscous, alongside ratatouille, is a very popular dish."Although the ingredients may not strike diners as being traditional, they can be found in dishes across Britain.Even the traditional chefs are aware of the need to adapt to local tastes and customs, while maintaining the Brutishness of their cuisine. At Yorkshire Pudding, Hill says that his staff asks diners whether they would like to share their meals. Small dishes, shared meals and "mixing it up" is not something commonly done in Britain, but Yorkshire Pudding will bring full dished to the table and offer individual plates for each dinner. "That way, people still get the presentation of the dishes as they were designed, but can carve them up however they like," Hill says. This practice is also popular at The Pawn, although largely for rotisseries(烤肉馆), Tamlyn says. "Some tables will arrive on Sunday, order a whole chicken and a shoulder of lamb or a baby pig, and just stay for hours enjoying everything we bring out for them."Some British traditions are too sacred(神圣的) to mess with, however, Tomes says. "I'd never change a full English breakfast."1. What is British food generally known for?A) Its unique flavor. B) Its bad taste.C) Its special cooking methods D) Its organic ingredients.2. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneSeveral recent studies have found that being randomly (随机地) assigned to aroommate of another race can lead to increased tolerance but also to a greater likelihood (可能性) of conflict.Recent reports found that lodging with a student of a different race may decrease prejudice and compel students to engage in more ethnically diverse friendships. An Ohio State University study also found that black students living with a white roommate saw higher academic success throughout their college careers. Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure. In a New York Times article, Sam Roakye-the only black student on his freshman year floor-said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove."Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students in residences.According to two recent studies, randomly assigned roommates of different race are more likely to experience conflicts so strained that one roommate will move out.An Indiana University study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two white roommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester.Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race," she said.At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for housing."One of the great things about freshman housing is that, with some exceptions, the process throws you together randomly," said Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of integration.""I've experienced roommate conflicts between interracial students that have both broken down stereotypes and reinforced stereotypes," said one Penn resident advisor (RA). The RA of two years added that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding (融合)," there were also "jarring cultural confrontations."The RA said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same race.Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of the students need to be studies and explained.57. What can we learn from some recent studies?A) Conflicts between studies of different races are unavoidable.B) Students of different races are prejudiced against each other.C) Interracial lodging does more harm than good.D) Interracial lodging may have diverse outcomes.58. What does Sam Boakye's remark mean?A) White students tend to look down upon their black peers.B) Black students can compete with their white peers academically.C) Black students feel somewhat embarrassed among white peers during the freshman year.D) Being surrounded by white peers motivates a black student to work harder to succeed.59. What does the Indians Univerisity study show?A) Interracial roommates are more likely to fall out.B) Few white students like sharing a room with a black peer.C) Roommates of different races just don't get along.D) Assigning students' lodging randomly is not a good policy.60. What does Alec Webley consider to be the "definition of integration"?A) Students of different races are required to share room.B) Interracial lodging is arranged by the school for freshmen.C) Lodging is assigned to students of different races without exception.D) The school randomly assigns roommates without regard to race.61. What does Grace Kao say about interracial lodging?A) It is unscientific to make generalizations about it without further study.B) Schools should be cautious when making decisions about student lodging.C) Students' racial background should be considered before lodging is assigned.D) Experienced resident advisors should be assigned to handle the problems.Passage TwoGlobal warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general. The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr., a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum's report was " a methodological embarrassment" because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that "climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention." But the report, he said, "will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的)"However, Soren Anderasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards, while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.62. What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?A) Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.B) Rates of death from illness have risen due to global warming.C) Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.D) Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.63. What do we learn about the Forum's report from the passage?A) It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.B) It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.C) It was warmly received by environmentalists.D) It caused a big stir in developing countries.64. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum's report?A) Its statistics look embarrassing.B) It is invalid in terms of methodology.C) It deserves our closest attention.D) Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.65. What is Soren Andreasen's view of the report?A) Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.B) It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.C) It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.D) Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.66. What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference?A) How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing global warming.B) How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.C) How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.D) How rich countries can better help poor regions reduce climate hazards.Part ⅤCloze (15 minutes)Directions:There are 20 blanks in the following passage. 大学英语四级考试练习卷一、阅读理解Passage1The School YearsSoon after the United States was founded,Thomas Jefferson, who was President from1801to1809wrote,"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization,it expects what never was and never will be."Jefferson believed that the new republic would be served best by literate,well-informed citizens and that everyone should have a guarantee of some education with further education for those who wanted it and were qualified. The American system of public education has been built on this philosophy.Public education in this country is expected to offer equal educational opportunities to everyone enrolled in secular schools, which are publicly controlled and publicly financed, with free tuition, free books, and compulsory attendance. There is no mention of education in the Constitution, and each state is responsible for its own educational system.Public schools are financed primarily by local and state taxes, and the amount of money spent on public school students varies from state to state.Alabama, for example, spent an average of$716for each pupil in1974,the lowest rate of any state. New York,by contrast, had the highest rate,$1809per pupil. The majorityof states spent more than$800per pupil. There are great differences in expenditures(花费)by communities within each state, depending on the amount of local funds available for public education.Often,well-to-do communities spend several hundred dollars more for each child than poorer towns nearby do.These figures reflect differences in expenditures.for such items as teachers'salaries, the purchase of books, and school construction and maintenance.Despite these differences, there is general uniformity in the organization and curricula of public schools throughout the country. Each state is divided into local school ually a state department of education sets the general requirements that local communities or school districts must meet.Local school boards, usually elected by members of their communities, are responsible for the detailed organization and operation of their schools.This-responsibility includes hiring teachers and administration and setting their salaries. The twelve years of public school education usually begin when a child is six years old. Some school systems are divided into eight years of primary school and four years of secondary school.Primary schools are often called elementary schools, and secondary schools are called high schools. Many systems combine the last two years of elementary school and the first year of high school in what is known as junior high school. This is followed by three years of senior high school.A large number of schoolsystems also have a kindergarten program that provides one year of preschool training for five-year-old children before they begin the formal school years. The academic year lasts nine months, from September to June, with winter and spring vacations.Classes are held five days a week, from Monday through Friday.Elementary schools are usually organized on a neighbourhood basis. Children living in the same area attend a school that is close to their homes.High schools,on the other hand, serve children from many different elementary schools, and a single high school often has several thousand students from various parts of the community. Many towns have just one high school. In rural areas one elementary school frequently serves the children from several communities. When schools are located beyond convenient walking distance, children are transported free of charge in bright yellow school buses.Today more than40percent of all American school children are bused to and from school daily. It took many years for Jefferson's dream of education for everyone to approach reality.In1870only slightly more than half of all children of school age attended school. It was not until1918that every state had a compulsory school-attendance law.Today most states require the attendance of all children between the ages of six and sixteen. Approximately99percent of all American children of elementary school age(six through thirteen)and94percent of high school age(fourteenthrough seventeen)go to school. The quality of education has changed as the record of school attendance. For example,in a typical mid-nineteenth century elementary school class children sat in one place in one position for hours on end, with periodic arm swinging for exercise and perhaps occasional permission to go to the bathroom. The method of instruction was catechism(questions by the teacher with memorized responses by the students)...The teacher fed the stuff out one day,and wanted it back the next,in her own words. Emphasis was on good behavior and learning what were called"the three Rs"—reading,'riting and'rithmetic. Most of the teachers had no more than elementary school education themselves. In the modern elementary school,in addition to the study of reading, writing, arithmetic, and language arts(including spelling),children are taught social studies(history, geography, and civics or government) science, art, and music. They are.often also taught cooking and manual skills such as carpentry and sewing.Outdoor playgrounds and indoor gymnasiums offer opportunities for lots of physical exercise.Modern teaching theories and methods vary greatly, but they frequently reflect the influence of John Dewey,an important twentieth-century educator and philosopher.Dewey believed that education should be more concerned with the interests and needs of each child than with the particular subjects that the child is taught.Today many teachers try togive considerable attention to the personal development of each individual student, especially at the elementary school level.Entrance to high school is automatic when a student completes elementary school. No examinations are required.High schools usually offer courses in English literature and composition, the social sciences, mathematics, laboratory sciences, and foreign languages as well as art, music, and physical education. After completing certain basic requirements, students are often permitted to choose the subjects that best suit their plans for college or for work after graduation.Extracurricular activities including clubs, school newspapers and magazines, and sports are important features of high-school life.In addition, student representatives, elected by their fellow students, often work with school officials in planning school policies. This arrangement is an effort to encourage students'interest inself-government and in their responsibilities as citizens. Most high schools are organized on what is called a comprehensive basis, which means that programs in academic(college preparatory),vocational, and general education are offered in the same school. In some large cities specialized high schools concentrate on just one type of program. In addition, many communities provide programs for handicapped children (children who are deaf, blind, crippled, emotionally disturbed,or mentally retarded)and children who are specially gifted, intellectuallyor artistically.1.In American system of public education, everyone is expected to have equal educational opportunities, which is defined in the U.S.Constitution.2.The amount of money spent on public school students depends mainly on local and state taxes.3.The organization and curricula of public schools have much in common throughout the country.4.All students can take yellow school buses to school in some states.5.Both school attendance and the quality of education have been greatly improved today.6.All children between the ages of five and eighteen are required to attend school in most states.7.There are much higher requirements for public school teachers today than in the past.8.Students can get well prepared for college study in_______________9.Modern teaching theories and methods are generally influencedby_________________10.Children may have one year of before they start elementary school years.Passage2When a person feels low, blue,or down in the clumps,it usually means he has been hurt, disappointed,or saddened by something that causes a confused and listless feeling. There is11a type of music called"the blue",a low, mournful, sad sound to12these universal human feelings.Depression is another name for this mood.Feeling depressed is a normal and natural13to experiences of loss, failure, and undeserved bad luck. Indeed,it has been pointed out that without depression,we would14much of the world's great tragic literature, music, and art.In some cases, however, depression becomes something more than just 15feelings of blues or letdown.A large number of people suffer from what psychiatrists call"depressive illness."Depressive illness is more16 and lasts longer than common listless feelings.Sometimes a serious17 of depression can begin with the loss of a loved one or a change of job. Many times,in very18cases,there doesn't seem to be any circumstance serious enough to have caused the depression. Some psychiatrists suggest that the key feature in depression is change. The person becomes different from the way before the onset of his depression. He may even become the opposite of his usual self. There are many examples:the businessman who becomes a wanderer, the mother who wantsto19her children and herself.Instead of seeking satisfaction and pleasure, the depressed person20it.A.ever B.escape C.intenseD.responseE.avoids F.even G.expressH.realizationI.severe J.lessen K.dense L.periodM.harm N.lack O.normalPassage3Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunityfor change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.Within a society, social changes is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in thenon-material,for example,in technology rather than in values;in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early;in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites;in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones;in form rather than in substance;and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements.Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp difference. This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.21.The passage is mainly discussing.A.the necessity of social changeB.certain factors that determine the ease with which social changesoccurC.two different societies22.D.certain factors that promote social changeOne of the factors that tend to promote social change is.A.joint interestB.different points of viewC.less emotional peopleD.advanced technologyAccording to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.Social 23.change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.B.Disagreement with and argument about conditions tend to slow down social change.C.Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society.D.Social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were young.24.The expression"greater tolerance"(Para.1)refers to_______.A.greater willingness to accept social changeB.quicker adaptation to changing circumstancesC.more respect for different beliefs and behaviorD.greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas25.Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways because_______.vA.people there have got so accustomed to their conditions that theyseldom think it necessary to changeB.people there have identical needs that can be satisfied without much difficultyC.people there are easy to pleaseD.people there are less disputedPassage4Anne Whitney,a sophomore(大学二年级学生)at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college."I was always well prepared for my tests.Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions correctly.I would blank out because of nervousness and fear.I couldn't think of the answer. My low grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher."Another student in biology had similar experiences. He said,"My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test,I sat down to take it,and I was so nervous that I was shaking. My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil.I knew the material and I knew the answers.Yet I couldn't even write them down!"These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the extreme tension and nervousness.Although poorgrades are often a result of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades.Recently, test anxiety has been recognized as a real problem, not just an excuse or a false explanation of lazy students. Special university advising courses try to help students. In these courses, advisors try to help students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some universities, students take tests to measure their anxiety. If the tests show(heir anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with(heir tensions. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies.Students are trained to become calm in very tense situations.By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work at ease.Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.An expert•at the University of California explains,"With almost all students, relaxation and less stress are felt after taking our program.
