中英成语对照【一丘之貉】birds of a feather意指双方都是同样性质的坏人,都彼此相似,没有甚麼差别,就如在同一座山丘中的貉(一种似狐狸的野兽)一样。
这句成语带有贬义。
语见出东汉班固《汉书‧杨恽传》:"古与今如一丘之貉。
"反义:鸡飞蛋打对等的英语成语:birds of a feather这句成语用鸟类作比喻,意指兴趣相同或志同道合的人,必然成群地聚集在一起。
源自谚语birds of a feather flock together的一部分,见於莎士比亚剧本《雅典的泰蒙》第一幕第一场:"我不是那种在朋友有困难时把他丢弃不顾的人"。

【一塌糊涂】a kettle of fish形容事情紊乱到不可收拾的地步。
塌,崩塌下来之意;糊涂,形容混乱的情况。
语见清代曾朴《孽海花》第三十回:"与其顾惜场面,硬充好汉,到临了弄的一塌糊涂,还不如一老一实,揭破真情,自寻生路。
"近义:乱七八糟、乌烟瘴气对等的英语成语:a kettle of fisha kettle of fish的表面字义是一锅鱼,其实际意思是一塌糊涂、一团糟。
语出自苏格兰边境地区的一种风俗习惯。
【一箭双雕】kill two birds with one stone比喻做一件事情时,可同时获得两方面的好处。
语见《北史.长孙晟传》:"尝有二雕飞而争肉,因以箭两只与晟请射取之,晟驰往,遇雕相攫,逐一发双贯焉。
"近义:一举两得、一石二鸟、一矢双穿反义:鸡飞蛋打对等的英语成语:kill two birds with one stone"kill two birds with one stone"指以一石头就能打下两只鸟。
早於1956年,英国哲学家Thomas Hobbes(1588-1679)曾以此句作比喻之用。
第一次出现於1611年科特格雷夫(R.Cotgrave)的《英法词典》中,法语译作"d'une pierre faire deux coups【不言而喻】go without saying即不需说明,就可明白,形容十分明显之意。
语见《孟子.尽心上》:"君子所性,仁义礼智根於心……施於四体,四体不言而喻。
"近义:显然易见、不问可知反义:百思不解对等的英语成语:go without saying这成语源於法语:"cela va sans dire"。
从意思上而言,是"当然"(of course)、"不用多说"(I need not say)的意思。
【本末倒置】put the cart before the horse意思指主要的和次要的位置颠倒了,说明一些不合情理、不合逻辑的做法或想法。
"本"原指树根,比喻事情的主要部分;"末"指树梢,比喻事情的次要部分。
此语曾见於宋代朱熹《答吕伯恭》:"昨所献疑,本末倒置之病,明者已先悟其失。
"近义:舍本逐末反义:纲举目张对等的英语成语:put the cart before the horse古时的马车,都是马在前,车在后,如倒转了,就是车拉马,而非马拉车了。
这里用马和车的关系,说明将事情的次序倒转了。
其实,早於1340年,一本名为《良心的悔恨》(Remorse of Conscience)的散文集有一句的意思与此成语很接近:"许多宗教老师均把牛放在犁后。
"(Many religious teachers set the plough before the oxen.)后至1589年,普坦汉姆(Puttenham)在《英诗技巧》(Arte of English Poesie)提出把"the cart before the horse"作为成语,有"本末倒置"之意。
【多此一举】carry coals to Newcastle比喻一些不必要、多余的举动或事情。
语见清.李绿园《歧路灯.第四回》:"寅兄盛情,多此一举"近义:画蛇添足反义:恰到好处对等的英语成语:carry coals to Newcastle早於1650年,富勒(Fuller)始用此语。
Newcastle是英国的产煤区,从外地运煤到此地,实为多此一举。
【充耳不闻】turn a deaf car危在旦夕hang by a thread比喻危险在短时间内发生、就在眼前之意。
语见《三国志.吴志.太史慈传》:"今管亥暴乱,北海被围,孤穷无援,危在旦夕。
"近义:危如朝露、岌岌可危反义:安如泰山对等的英语成语:hang by a thread此语用以形容一个病重或命运处於劣势的人,其生命或命运正如悬在一根线上,会随时断开。
在公元4世纪,古希腊有一位国王戴奥尼夏请其臣子摩克里斯赴宴,要他坐於以一根发丝悬著的剑下,以暗示君王处於危难之境。
【班门弄斧】teach one's grandmother to suck eggs比喻在专家面前卖弄本领,含讽刺意味。
就如在著名的建筑工匠鲁班门前摆弄斧头,卖弄本事一样不自量力。
语见唐代柳宗元《王氏伯仲唱和诗序》:"操斧於班、郢之门,斯强颜耳。
"又见於宋代欧阳修《与梅圣俞书》:"昨在真定,有诗七、八首,今录去,班门弄斧,可笑可笑!"近义:布鼓雷门反义:深藏若虚、程门立雪对等的英语成语:teach one's grandmother to suck eggs祖母的生活经验总比后辈的丰富,教祖母如何去吮吸鸡蛋,简直是不知天高地厚。
这是用作比喻一个人只是略懂皮毛,便要向人卖弄,十分狂妄自大。
这个成语的出现可追溯到十七世纪初,或可简略为to teach one's grandmother。
比这个成语早一百年前出现而含意相同的成语是to teach your grandmother to grops ducks。
【同舟共济】in the same boat意思为同坐一条船渡河,比喻互助团结,共渡难关。
语见《孙子.九地》:"夫吴人与越人相恶也,当其同舟共济,遇风,其相救也如左右手。
" 近义:风两同舟、同心同德反义:分道扬镳、各自为政对等的英语成语:in the same boat这个成语借用船作比喻,与中国的"同舟共济"俨如同出一辙。
指同坐一条船的人,同在一个处境,很可能共同经历好运或厄运。
语中的介词"in"也可用"on",故可为"on the same boat"。

umbles实指鹿的内脏,古人爱吃鹿肉,鹿肉是供主人食用。
鹿的内藏如心、肝之类等杂碎,则做成馅饼供仆人食用,此后,eat humble pie就含有"忍气吞声"之意。
【改过自新】turn over a new leaf意胃受了气担强咱忍耐,不敢说出来。
