But recent research argues that reading may be just as important in ____96____ . When practiced over a lifetime, reading and language acquisition (习得) skills can support healthy brain functioning in big ways. Simply put: ____97____ power increases brain power. To ____98____ why and what each of us can do to get the most out of our words, start by asking the same question the Yale team did: What is it about reading books in particular that increases our brain power while reading newspapers and m agazines doesn’t? For one, the researchers assume, chapter books encourage “deep reading.” Unlike skimming a page of headlines, reading a book forces your brain to think critically and make ____99____ from one chapter to another, and to the outside world. When you make associations, so does your brain, literally building new pathways between regions in all four lobes (脑叶) and both hemispheres. Over time, these neural networks can promote quicker thinking and may provide a greater ____100____ against the worst effects of cognitive decay (认知衰退) .____101____ , reading books, especially fiction, has been shown to increase empathy (共鸣) and emotional intelligence. One 2013 study found that participants who read just the first part or chapter of a story showed a noticeable increase in empathy one week later, while ____102____ readers showed a decrease. These findings may sound ____103____ , but they’re not; developing social tools such as empathy and emotional intelligence can lead to more (and more positive) human interaction, which ____104____ can lower stress levels—both of which are proved to help you live longer and healthier. That’s not to say that magazines, newspapers, and Web articles are without _____105_____ . Reading anything that fills your mind and exposes you to new words, phrases, and facts seems to carry _____106_____ benefits. New research indicates that a large _____107_____ may lead to a more flexible mind by fueling what scientists call cognitive reserve (认知储备). One way to think about this res erve is as your brain’s ability to adapt to _____108_____ . Just as your blood cells willhelp to cover a cut on your knee, cognitive reserve helps your brain cells find new mental pathways around areas damaged by stroke, dementia, and other forms of decay. This could explain why, after death, many seemingly healthy elders turn out to harbor advanced signs of Alzheimer’s disease in their brains despite showing few signs _____109_____ . It’s their cognitive reserve, researchers suspect, that may allow some seniors to _____110_____ hidden brain damage. 96.A.childhood B.adulthood C.education D.occupation 97.A.Memory B.Fluency C.Literature D.Word98.A.understand B.believe C.question D.confess 99.A.explorations B.connections C.equivalents D.judgments 100.A.appeal B.struggle C.defense D.warning 101.A.Consequently B.However C.Besides D.Instead 102.A.news B.regular C.mind D.occasional 103.A.inevitable B.unofficial C.undeniable D.insignificant104.A.in the meantime B.to date C.in turn D.to the full 105.A.advantages B.weaknesses C.threats D.opportunities 106.A.physical B.mental C.economic D.social107.A.proportion B.brain C.vocabulary D.range108.A.decrease B.change C.increase D.damage109.A.as before B.in total C.as usual D.in life110.A.look down on B.make up for C.get used to D.take out of8.(2022春·四川成都·高一树德中学校考期末)I wanted to be a journalist. Nobody, it implies, need force themselves to struggle through a book they’re not 115 .I particularly like the 116 advice to return to a book “when you feel ready for it.” It’s a 117 that reading is naturally relational and that the readers need time.Even when I’m more than ready to stop reading by page 50, 118 the exercise feels worth doing. 第八组(建议用时:35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2017·江西九江二模)As I began my junior year of college, I began to think of plans after graduation. I knew that I wanted to work in the field of my major, public relations. But I also knew that it was difficult to find a position considering my inexperience. That was when I decided to pursue an internship(实习工作).So I chose to talk to my advisor first. He had worked in the field of public relations for many years before he became a professor, and therefore had numerous contacts and associates in the field. After talking to him about a few of the positions, I decided to pursue the Cincinnati Fine Arts Fund because of my interest in the arts and the passion I would feel working for a nonprofit organization. I sent out a cover letter and a resume and was hired on the spot in the interview.I soon began my position. After class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would drive to work and apply all the skills I was learning in the classroom. I was amazed at the amount of practical knowledge in class that was directly applicable to my internship position. It became a very useful and beneficial experience. Not only was I working for arts organizations and seeing my name printed on documents I had created, but also gaining confidence in my skills and myself. As the semester came to a close, I finished my work with the Fine Arts Fund. Although I didn’t take away any money for the internship, I gained many different kinds of experience and the knowledge that I was capable of accomplishing professional tasks. If these persons each put a small amount of money into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer losses. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution are known as the insured and those who manage the__pool__of__contributions as insurers. The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form of contract on a piece of paper in best quality. It states that every year the insured shall pay an amount of money, which is called the premium;in return, the insurer will pay an amount of money or compensation for losses if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The premium for insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen,as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their area of insurance and they may lose business. On theother hand,if they make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.5.The underlined phrase in Para.2 most probably means________.A.money paid by the insurersB.each premiumC.money paid by all those insuredD. the cost of administering insurance6.Insurance premiums do not become too high because________.A.not many people insure themselvesB.premiums depend on the risk of lossesC.insurers have to be more competitiveD.insurance companies can never lose money7.According to the passage, insurance business gains profit because________.A.more and more people buy insuranceB.the firms have sound managementC.the premium is increased year by yearD.only a few of those insured suffer losses8.The purpose of the passage is to________.A.explain an insurance policyB.introduce insurance businessC.persuade people to be insuredD.warn people of possible lossesⅡ.七选五(2017·福建省普通高中毕业班质量检查)Although people value intelligence—understanding, reasoning, the ability to learn —they also respect wisdom, or the knowledge and experience that they gain over a lifetime. In some ways, wisdom is like beauty: we value it, we desire it, we know it when we see it, but it is nearly impossible to pin down such a nice quality. 1.________ ·Working at being social.Studies show that people who stay connected with others show higher levels of wisdom than those who remain alone. 2.________ Next time you’re at a party or gathering, single out someone who’s standing alone and strike up a conversation.·3._______ _Wisdom involves being able to understand all sides of an issue without letting personalfeelings get in the way.
