关于阿凡达一词的意义，卡梅隆表示，它是印度教神祇以肉体形式出现时的化身。在这部电影中，这意味着 人类未来的技术，可以将一名人类的智力注入遥控的生物身体当中。纳威人（潘多拉星当地的类人种族）相貌的 灵感，来自卡梅隆的母亲在很早以前做的一场梦。在这场梦里，她看到了一位身高12英尺的蓝肤女人。卡梅隆觉 得这一画面十分绝妙，于是在他的首部剧本（写于1976年或1977年）中，他就加进了类似的生物，这在后来成为 了纳威人的原型。

《阿凡达》运用“动作捕捉(Motion Capture)”技术时，除了需要演员在拍摄时穿上布满捕捉点的紧身衣裤 外，影片摄影棚内还同时架设有一套“协同工作摄像机(Simulcam)”来完成此工作。这套系统由布满在摄影棚顶 部的140个数字摄像机组成，形成一个捕捉舞台。摄像机通过追踪现场LED灯打出的近红外光谱的反射，将捕捉到 的数据传输到一套系统中，再将光谱的反射与演员的运动进行组合分析，得出整个镜头的立体模型。

1、潘多拉星球概况：
潘多拉并不是一个行星，它其实是一个巨型气体行星的卫星。
这个巨行星叫做Polyphemis，它位于半人马座的阿尔法星系，这个星系距离我们4.4光年，是离我们最近的恒星系统。
阿尔法星系有3颗恒星，分别是阿尔法A、阿尔法B 和阿尔法C，Polyphemis就绕着阿尔法A星运转。
Polyphemis的个头是木星的两倍，它的名字来自希腊神话里的独眼巨人，因为它上面也有一个风暴云构成的大红斑，就像一只眼睛怒视着它的卫星潘多拉一样。
潘多拉绕着Polyphemis运转，它和地球差不多大，由于Polyphemis不止潘多拉一个卫星，所以在潘多拉上可以看到一次有两个甚至三个月亮挂在天上的奇景。
潘多拉的空气充满氨气、甲烷、氯气，不依赖别的设备人类在这里根本无法生存，然而就是这样的环境却孕育出了一群独特的生物。
潘多拉有一种稀有的矿藏“Unobtainium”，由于磁场漩涡效应，一些外露在地表的巨型“Unobtainium”岩石漂浮到了空中，形成了壮观的空中山峰，人类把它们叫做“哈利路亚山”(Hallelujah Mountain)，因为这些矿石可以让他们致富；而纳威人则把它们叫做“超导矿石，并对这一区域心怀畏惧。
这些飘浮在空中的巨石如同海上的冰山在缓慢的移动。
它们的边缘都是陡峭的岩壁，不过岩石上长满了植物，甚至还有瀑布流下。
巨石与巨石有时也会碰撞，产生更多的碎块。
而人类的开采也人为的制造了更多这样的“哈利路亚山”。
2、纳威人(NA'VI)：
纳威人是潘多拉星球上的土著，他们是一种身高3米的高级智慧生物(文明尚处于原始人阶段)，通体蓝色带有花纹，除此以外，他们的体型、样貌都几乎和人类一样。
他们的脖子很长，可以转向180度，他们的身体都很苗条，但并
不瘦弱，肌肉恰到好处。
他们的眼睛是人类的两倍大，有点像猫眼，他们的嘴也很大，牙齿很白。
他们还长有长长的尾巴，轻微的弯曲，很像豹子的尾巴。
每个纳威人身上的花纹都有两种，一种类似斑马条纹遍布全身，另一种如繁星点点沿着他们的神经和循环系统分布，能在黑暗处发出美丽的荧光。
后者还能充当纳威人交流的信号，依据不同的情绪改变发光颜色。
纳威人全身都没有毛发，头上长长的像头发一样的东西其实是他们露出体外的神经系统。
3、长颈马(Dire Horse)：
纳威人的陆地座骑，相当于人类的马，不过它比人类的马要大得多，有六条腿，4米高、4.25米长，堪比地球上的大象。
长颈马(Dire Horse)脖子很长、头很小有两根触角，身上有类似斑马的条纹，没有毛。
它们是杂食动物，嘴部细长还有长长的舌头，可以探到树洞里吸食昆虫以获取蛋白质。
不过它们最喜欢的是一种类似猪笼草的植物。
长颈马(Dire Horse)主要生活在潘多拉的雨林和草地，但它们也能适应其他环境。
4、迅雷翼兽(Banshee)：
全名“高山banshee”，它们是潘多拉空中的一种肉食动物，纳威人通常骑着它们去打猎。
迅雷翼兽(Banshee)有点类似地球远古的翼龙，有四个翼膜翅膀，完全展开宽度可达13.9米。
它们的体色非常复杂，骨骼由有机的碳纤维构成，嘴没有颌骨，因此可以张的非常大，还有着锋利的如大白鲨般的牙齿。
迅雷翼兽(Banshee)聚居在哈利路亚山(Hallelujah Mountains)的顶端，其中在巨石Veritas的峭壁上栖息着迅雷翼兽(Banshee)最大的种群，这里也是纳威族Omaticaya部落挑选迅雷翼兽座骑的最佳地点。
不过想要骑一只迅雷翼兽(Banshee)并不简单，首先要先赢得它的尊重，只有它接受了你你才能骑上去。
与纳威人建立了联系的迅雷翼兽(Banshee)就不再居住在哈利路亚山了，它们会迁到离自己搭档更近的“家园树”，即纳威族Omaticaya部落的大本营。
5、魅影(Leonopteryx)：
潘多拉的空中霸主，虽然和迅雷翼兽(Banshee)同种，也有膜状翼和碳纤维骨骼，但其体型要大得多，翼展可达25米。
纳威人非常敬畏这种凶猛美丽的生物，他们唱歌跳舞、制造图腾来崇拜这种动物。
魅影(Leonopteryx)身上有红、黄、黑的条纹，脑袋则是深蓝色，头顶下颚均有冠，冠很锋利，可以用来伤害猎物，将他们开膛破肚，也可以斩断飞行途中挡在路上的树木植物。
魅影(Leonopteryx)有一对利爪可以紧紧地抓住猎物，也可以帮助他们栖息在树上。
魅影(Leonopteryx)还有两个尾翼，可以让它们获得更好的空气动力，展翅蓝天。
6、斯塔姆兽(Sturmbeest)：
一种食草动物，类似地球上的非洲角马，喜欢集群。
它们的体色为桔红和靛蓝相间，身高5米，体重10吨，跑起来就像火车头。
7、槌头雷兽(Titanothere)：
全名“槌头Titanothere”，因为这种动物的脑袋上长着一个槌子状的角，有点像地球上的槌头双髻鲨。
不过槌头雷兽(Titanothere)是陆地动物，它们喜欢开阔的草地，也经常拜访雨林。
它们是食草动物，以灌木和草食为主，但也吃水果和树叶。
成年的槌头雷兽(Titanothere)一般6米高，11米长。
8、闪雷兽(Thanator)：
潘多拉一种可怕的肉食性动物，也是丛林食物链的顶级捕食者。
它有六条腿，通体蓝色，头后部有一圈可收起的花状冠。
闪雷兽（Thanator）完美集合了力量、速度和灵活几大优点，落入它的尖牙利爪的动物几乎没有能幸还的。
闪雷兽（Thanator）可以在若干英里以外就觉察到猎物，甚至连最勇敢、最亲近自然的纳美人对它也是谈虎色变。
9、毒狼(Viperwolf)：
潘多拉的一种食肉动物，类似地球上的狼。
它们体型并不大，体表没有毛，一般生活在潘多拉的雨林、草原和亚寒带地区，喜欢集群。
毒狼（Viperwolf）的下巴同样可以张得很大，它们的脑袋被一圈盔甲般的硬壳环绕着，它们的爪子和人手一样有一个与其它手指相对的拇指，它们的身上有生物性发光的亮点，可以辨认身份。
10、潘狐猴(Prolemuris)：
一种居住在树上的小动物，类似地球上的狐猴或松鼠，不过它们的身高更大，有一米。
潘狐猴（Prolemuris）是食草动物，性情温和，它们主要聚居在雨林的大树上，这里也是雨林中相对比较安全的地方。
潘狐猴（Prolemuris）有两个胳膊(前臂分叉成四个)和两条腿，手臂和腿之间有膜连着，因此它们可以伸开手臂让自己在树间滑翔(就像地球上的飞鼠)一般滑翔12米都不成问题。
为了适应滑翔减轻体重，潘狐猴（Prolemuris）的骨头是中空的，肌肉密度也比较小，一般最重的潘狐猴（Prolemuris）也还不到6公斤。
潘狐猴（Prolemuris）身手也很矫健，四肢前臂配合默契，一点也不影响它们的灵活度，此外它们还有很好的平衡感。
潘狐猴（Prolemuris）的耳朵很长，像两面旗子，它们可以独立运动，精确定位声音的来源，它们的牙齿主要用来咀嚼植物，因此和针一样细小锋利，另外它们偶尔也会吃昆虫。
潘狐猴（Prolemuris）的天敌是迅雷翼兽（Banshee）和毒狼（Viperwolf）。
11、六足怪(Hexapede)：
食草动物，广泛生活在潘多拉的雨林、稀树草原、冻土荒原和山区。
它的嘴很长、颚很小还分瓣，它的头上有两个犄角状的扇形膜，很簿，上面有鲜艳的色彩和花纹。
在它的颚下方，还有两条胡子状的皮肤膜，垂吊着一直到颈根的位置。
它们的身体为深蓝色，皮肤有黄白色的条纹，它们的颈部和腿都很修长，一般成年的六足怪(Hexapede)身高有2米，体长有1.5米。
12、斯林格(Slinger)：
潘多拉星球上最古怪的危险食肉动物，身高2.4米，生活在雨林中，主要以孔雀鹿（Hexapede）为食。
13、地狱之火蜂(Hellfire Wasp)：
外形很像地球的黄蜂，但个头有燕子那么大。
它们也有复眼、也是外骨骼，夜里身体能发光，有两根刺。
它们有精确的定位系统，通过嗅觉器官可以探测到附近生物的信息素，一旦察觉到危险，它的飞行就变得躁动，并很有可能发起攻击。
通常这种昆虫都是单独行动，但也有人观察到它们集群活动。
14、刺蝠(Stingbat)：
小型飞行生物，一般在水边。
15、精灵蜥蜴（Fan lizard）：
潘多拉的一种夜行小动物，类似地球的蜥蜴，背上有可折叠的碟状物，用来飞行，具有生物发光特性。
16、精灵水母(Medusa)：
一种生活在潘多拉空中、水母状的生物。
17、树精灵(Woodsprites)：
一种叫做Utraya Mokri的大树的种子，飘荡在空中，能发光，Utraya Mokri
是“灵魂之树”，对纳威人来说异常神圣。
