The spiritedness of its citizens, which Atheniens rely on for glory, also results in the ruin of Athens and the dismantling of its empire.

B. spiritedness
heroism of Medea Medea regards herself as belonging to the race of heroes. She seeks for herself a life of glory, one that is utterly incompatible with dishonor of any kind. Medea will be victorious over her enemies or die in the attempt. She will never hesitate to use the sword against those who are dearest to her if that is nessessary to maintain her honor. The sword will cut loose the bonds of maternal affection. Spiritedness is victorious on the battleground of Medea's soul. she was driven by her spiritedness to elope with Jason. Finally, she was abandoned by her husband.
Theme of Medea

A. feminism
"we women are the unhappiest creatures born" "Do not betray me. In all else full of fears Is woman, a mere coward to face steel in battle? but in the hour when she is wronged in wedlock There is no spirit more murderous than hers." Gradually medea realized that women should not allow themselves to be ordered about, they should fight for rights. So although the method she uses perhaps more or less goes into extremes, she is honored as the first feminist in the history of feminism .
C. Self-Interested Opportunism
Self-interest lies at the heart of these roles. Jason, Medea, and Aegeus behave unexpectedly because of their selfinterest, while Creon, the king, does so because of his lack of self-interest. Jason: abandon wife for vanity Medea: kill her brother and two sons for love Aegeus: marry Medea for a son Creon: lose life out of mercy
"Medea personifies the full force and destructive power of spiritedness, both its noble peak and savage low point. Indeed, Medea's more than human stature at the end of the play invites the audience to view her less as an individual and more as an exemplar of this permanent aspect of human experience."
political imlication of the play
At the time the play was being performed, Athens and Sparta were already in disagreement. Athen politicians got used to stirring up Athenians' resolution and courage in war. In Pericle, an Athen politician's famous funeral oration, he enjoined his fellow citizens to fix their gaze on the power of Athens, to fall in love with her greatness, and to find the courage and daring necessary to continue the war. The appeal to spiritedness to defend the Athenian empire became even more marked after the first year of war. These sentiments reached a climax years later when the Athenians enthusiastically adopted a scheme to enlarge their empire with an illfated expedition to Sicily. The devastating defeat of Athenian forces in Sicily marked the beginning of the end for Athens.

Self-intrest is a human weakness.
Medea Complex
