You probably imagine a pretty scene with blue water, birds, and fish. For the people in the northwestern Cameroon, however, the image is very different. For them, lakes may mean terrible disasters. In 1984, poisonous gases exploded out of Lake Monoun and came down into the nearby villages, killing thirty-seven people. Two years later, Lake Nyos erupted a cloud of gases rolled down the hills and into the valleys and killed 1,700 people.Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are crater (火山口) lakes. They were formed when water collected in the craters of old volcanoes. The volcanoes under Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are not active anymore. However, poisonous gases from the center of the earth continue to flow up through cracks in the bottom of the lake. This is normal in a crater lake. In most crater lakes, these gases are released often because the water “turns over” regularly. That is, the water from the bottom of the lake rises and mixes with the water at the top, allowing the gases to escape slowly. However, in Lakes Nyos and Monoun, there is no regular turning over. No one knows the reason for this fact, but as a result, these lakes have more gases tapped at the bottom than other crater lakes. In fact, scientists who have studied Lakes Nyos and Monoun have found 16,000 times more gases. When a strong wind, cool weather, a storm, or a landslide (滑坡) causes the water to turn over suddenly, the gases escape in a violent explosion. In the past, no one knew when the gases might explode, so there was no way for the villagers to escape disaster. Now scientists from the United States, France, and Cameroon have found a way to reduce the gas pressure at the bottom of Lake Nyos. They stood a672-foot plastic pipe in the middle of the lake, with one end of the pipe near the bottom and the other end in the air. Near the top of the pipe, the team put several holes that could be opened or closed by a computer. Now, when the gas pressure gets too high, the holes are opened and some of the gas-filled water shoots up through the pipe into the air like a fountain. With less pressure, a disastrous explosion is much less likely. However, the scientists are not sure that one pipe will be enough to prevent explosions. They hope to put in others soon and they plan to install a similar pipe and a computer system at Lake Monoun as well.To protect people nearby until all of the pipes are in place, the scientists have installed early warning systems at both lakes. If the gas pressure rises to a dangerous level, computers will set off loud sirens (警报) and bright lights to warn the people in the villages. That way, they will have time to escape from the dangerous gases.47.What will happen when Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun explode?A.Water will flow down the hills. B.Poisonous gases will be released suddenly.C.A strong wind will rise from the lakes. D.The volcanoes will come to life. 48.Which of the following statements about Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun is true? A.They were formed in 1984. B.They are at the top of two activevolcanoes.C.They are not like most other crater lakes. D.Water in them turns over regularly. 49.Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun explode because ________.A.the gases rise to the top and mix with airB.people from the villages turn over the waterC.scientists have put in a computer systemD.they have more gases trapped at the bottom than other crater lakes50.A team of scientists has ________.A.erected a pressure-releasing pipe in the lake B.identified the gases at the bottom of the lakeC.built a beautiful fountain near the lakes D.removed all dangerous gases from the lakes51.What do we learn from the last paragraph?A.Scientists are planning to install pipes in all crater lakes B.Scientists still do not know how to prevent gas explosionsC.Explosion disasters could be avoided in the future D.Warming systems have been set up in the villages nearby.九、完型填空It was just getting dark; there was a touch of fog and I was on a lonely stretch of road. But I was going along cheerfully, thinking about the dinner I would eat when I got to Salisbury.I was going along quietly at about thirty-five miles an hour when suddenly I heard a scream, a woman’s scream- “Help!” I looked round, but the only 52 of life was a large, black, rather suspicious-looking(看起来可疑的) car just turning a bend in the road about a hundred yards away. That was 53 the cry had come from: I 54 speed and went after it. I thought the driver saw what I was doing, for he did the same and began to draw away from me. As I drew nea r, the girl’s voice came again, a lovely voice but trembling(发抖)with fear.“Let me go, you fool; you’re hurting me. Oh! Oh!”I felt my blood 55 . The fog was coming down thicker now, the countryside was lonelier. The man in the car had no 56 noticed this. Again, came a cry.“Drop the knife, fool. Oh!” Then a cry and a groan. If I was to save her, it was now or 57 . Perhaps even now I was too late. But if I couldn’t save the girl, I would 58 try to bring the murderer to the police station. The car was only a couple of yards away now. I drove the bike right across its path, and its brakes screamed as the driver tried to pull it over and crashed into the ditch (沟渠) on the side of the road. The door of the car was pushed open angrily and a dark, evil-looking fellow stepped out, mad with anger.“Fool!” he shouted 59 he came towards me with his fist raised to hit me. But I was quicker than he. I put all I knew into a blow that would have knocked out Joe Louis. It caught him right on the ground without a sound. I rushed to the car, pulled the door and peered inside. There was no girl there. Suddenly from the back of the car came a voice.“You have been listening to a radio play. Murder in Holl ywood, with Mae Garbo and Clark Taylor. The news will follow immediately.”52.A.person B.sign C.figure D.form 53.A.how B.when C.what D.where 54.A.put aside B.put up C.put down D.put on 55.A.boil B.run C.come D.freeze 56.A.sign B.effort C.doubt D.troubles 57.A.late B.then C.ever D.never 58.A.at most B.at least C.at last D.at first 59.A.before B.after C.as D.while十、短文首字母填空Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words.A Chimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one a60.. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.In the laboratory, chimps don’t naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no great effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull at random—he just doesn’t carewhether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.Human children, on the other hand are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others, to share information and to participate in a61.common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands f62.trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but n63.possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence d64.in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomasello, the children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests, but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t is wha t Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But b65.that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intend s to work toward a shared goal.十一、阅读回答问题Read the following passage and answer the questions.Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they can do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity. However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their sadness show—because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.Of course, astronauts can still have tears. But crying is much more difficult in space. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do on the earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go—they just stick to your eyes.In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. “Tears,” he said, “don’t fall off your eyes. They just stay there.” Besides making your visionunclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on the earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that’s not the same in space. The space environment dries out astronauts’ eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. “My right eye is painful like crazy” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.Since gravity doesn’t w ork in space astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet (头盔) to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait—“When the tears get big enough, they simply break free of the eye and float around”, astronaut Ron Parise said. There are lots of small things—things like crying that we are so used to on the earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a completely different environment, like space. There, astronauts ca n’t talk to each other directly. They can’t eat or drink in normal ways; They can’t even burp (打嗝) because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomachs. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomachs, according to the UK National Space Center. Thus perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly say: “Gravity, you’re the best.”66.Crying isn’t more difficult in space than on the earth, is it?_______________________________67.Who experienced that the tears in space caused pain rather than comfort?_______________________________68.How do astronauts get rid of the tears in space?_______________________________69.Why can’t astronauts burp in space?_______________________________70.In the last paragraph, the writer says: perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly say: “Gravity, you’re the best.” Do you agree with the writer? They stood a 672-foot plastic pipe in the middle of the lake, with one end of the pipe near the bottom and the other end in the air. They hope to put in others soon and they plan to install a similar pipe and a computer system at Lake Monoun as well.T o protect people nearby until all of the pipes are in place, the scientists have installed early warning systems at both lakes. If the gas pressure rises to a dangerous level, computers will set off loud sirens (警报) and bright lights to warn thepeople in the villages. That way, they will have time to escape from the dangerous gases.72. What will happen when Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun explode?A. W ater will flow down the hills.B. Poisonous gases will be released suddenly.C. A strong wind will rise from the lakes.D. The volcanoes will come to life.73. Which of the following statements about Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun is true?A. They were formed in 1984B. They are at the top of two active volcanoes.C. They are not like most other crater lakesD. W ater in them turns over regularly.74. Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun explode because .A. the gases rise to the top and mix with airB. people from the villages turn over the waterC. scientists have put in a computer systemD. they have more gases trapped at the bottom than other crater lakes75. A team of scientists has .A. erected a pressure-releasing pipe in the lakeB. identified the gases at the bottom of the lakeC. built a beautiful fountain near the lakesD. removed all dangerous gases from the lakes76. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. Scientists are planning to install pipes in all crater lakesB. Scientists still do not know how to prevent gas explosionsC. Explosion disasters could be avoided in the futureD. W arming systems have been set up in the villages nearby.B. The door of the car was pushed open angrily and a dark, evil-looking fellow stepped out, mad with anger.“Foo l!” he shouted _84_ he came towards me with his fist raised to hit me. But I was quicker than he. I put all I knew into a blow that would have knocked out Joe Louis. It caught him right on the ground without a sound. Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words 6%A Chimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one a 85 . Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.In the laboratory, chimps don’t naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no great effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull at random---he just does n’t care whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.Human children, on the other hand are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others, to share information and to participate in a 86 common goals. The psychologist Michael T omasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands f 87 trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but n _88_ possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason isthat social intelligence d 89in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by T omasello, the children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests, but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t is what T omasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But b _90_ that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a g roup that intends to work toward a shared goal.D. Read the following passage and answer the questions 5%Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they can do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity. However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their sadness show---because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.Of course, astronauts can still have tears. But crying is much more difficult in space. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do on the earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to go -- they just stick to your eyes.In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. “T ear s,” he said, “don’t fall off your eyes. They just stay there. “Be sides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on the earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that’s not the same in space. The space environment dries out astronaut s’ eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. “My right eye is painful like cr azy” F eustel told his teammate during the walk.Since gravity doesn’t work in space astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears.Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet (头盔) to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait -- “W hen the tears get big enough, they simply break free of the eye and float around, astronaut Ron Parise said. There are lots of small things -- things like crying that we are so used to on the earth. W e usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a completely different environment, like space. There, astronauts can’t talk to each other directly. They can’t eat or drink in normal ways; They can’t even burp (打嗝) because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomachs. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomachs, according to the UK National Space Center. Thus perhaps it’s only space explorers who can honestly sa y: “Gravity, you’r e the best.”91. Crying isn’t more difficult in space than on the earth, is it?92. Who experienced that the tears in space caused pain rather than comfort?93. How do astronauts get rid of the tears in space?94. They are right--- sometimes it reflects more! Just ask Liesl Denson. Riding the school bus has been more than a ride to school for Liesl. Bruce Hardy. school bus driver for Althouse BUS Company has been Liesl’s bus driver since kindergarten. Last year when Liesl’s family moved to Parkesburg, 66 her bus went by her new residence, she requested to ride the same bus. This year Liesl is a senior and will enjoy her last year riding the bus. She sa ys, “It’s been a great ride 67 ! My bus driver is so cool and has always been a good friend and a good listener. Sometimes when you’r e a child, adults do not think that what you have to say is important. Mr. Hardy always listens to what you have to say and makes you feel important.” Her friends Ashley Batista and Amanda W olfe agree 68what Liesl said. Bruce Hardy has been making Octorara students feel special since 1975. This year he will celebrate 40 years working for Althouse Bus Company. Larry Althouse, president of the company, acknowledges Bruce Hardy’s outstanding record, “Y ou do not come by employees like Bruce these days. My grandfather started the business with one bus. Althouse Bus Company is delighted to have the opportunity to bring distinctive and safe service to our local school and community and looks forward to continuing to provide quality service for many more years to com e.”Three generations of business is not all the company has enjoyed. Thanks 71 drivers like Bruce Hardy, they have been building relationships through generations, Liesl’s mother Carol also enjoys fond memories of riding Bruce Hardy’s bus to the Octorara School District.Part III Reading and WritingA. Choose the best answer 5%The Exploding Lakes of CameroonWhat comes to mind when you think of a lake? Y ou probably imagine a pretty scene with blue water, birds, and fish. For the people in the northwestern Cameroon, however, the image is very different. For them, lakes may mean terrible disasters. In 1984, poisonous gases exploded out of Lake Monoun and came down into the nearby villages, killing thirty -- seven people. T wo years later, Lake Nyos erupted a cloud of gases rolled down the hills and into the valleys and killed1,700 people.Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are crater (火山口) lakes. They were formed when water collected in the craters of old volcanoes. The volcanoes under Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun are not active anymore. However, poisonous gases from the center of the earth continue to flow up through cracks in the bottom of the lake. This is normal in a crater lake. In most crater lakes, these gases are released often because the water ‘t urns over’ regularly. In fact, scientists who have studied LakesNyos and Monoun have found 16,000 times more gases. When a strong wind, cool weather, a storm, or a landslide (滑坡)causes the water to turn over suddenly, the gases escape in a violent explosion. In the past, no one knew when the gases might explode, so there was no way for the villagers to escape disaster. Now scientists from the United States, France, and Cameroon have found a way to reduce the gas pressure at the bottom of Lake Nyos. They stood a 672-foot plastic pipe in the middle of the lake, with one end of the pipe near the bottom and the other end in the air. A team of scientists has .A. erected a pressure-releasing pipe in the lakeB.identified the gases at the bottom of the lake C.built a beautiful fountain near the lakesD. removed all dangerous gases from the lakes76. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. Scientists are planning to install pipes in all crater lakesB. Scientists still do not know how to prevent gas explosionsC. Explosion disasters could be avoided in the futureD. W arming systems have been set up in the villages nearby.B. I drove the bike right across its path, and its brakes screamed as the driver tried to pull it over and crashed into the ditch (沟渠) on the side of the road. I rushed to the car, pulled the door and peered inside. There was no girl there. Suddenly from the back of the car came a voice.“Y ou have been listening to a radio play. Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words 6%A Chimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one a 85 . Chimps in the wildseek food for themselves. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to trainreason isthat social intelligence d 89in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a g roup that intends to work toward a shared goal. D. The space environment dries out astronaut s’eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically.Diet products weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the counter instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food brands. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we don’t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients(营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemical that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them.77.From Paragraph 1, we can learn thatA.diet products can bring out people’s potentialB.people have difficulty in choosing diet productsC.diet products are misleading peopleD.people are fed up with diet products78.The purpose of writing this passage is .A.to warn people of the side effect of diet productsB.tell people how to lose weightC.to advise people to eat diet productsD.to introduce some diet products79.Which of the following shows the structure(结构)of the passage?CP: Central Point P: Point SP: Sub-point(次要点) C: ConclusionB.Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage 12%When we think of green buildings, we tend to think of new ones --- the kind of modern, solar-paneled masterpieces that make the covers of architecture magazines. But the US has more than 100 million existing homes, and it would be incredibly wasteful to tear them all down and replace them with greener versions. An enormous amount of energy and resources went into the construction of those houses. And it would take an average of 65 years for the 80 carbon emissions (排放) from a new energy-efficient ( 节能) home to make up for the 81 lost by destroying an old one.So in the broadest sense, the greenest home is the one that has already been built. But at the same time, nearly half of US carbon emissions come from heating, cooling and powering our homes, offices and other buildings."You can't deal with climate 82 without dealing with existing buildings,"says Richard Moe, the president of the National Trust. With some exceptions, the oldest homes tend to be the least energy-efficient.Houses built before 1939 use about 50more energy per square foot than those built after 2000, mainly due to the tiny cracks and gaps that expand over time and let in more outside air.83 , there are a vast number of relatively simple changes that can green older homes, from 84 ones like Lincoln's Cottage to your own postwar home. And efficiency upgrades (升级) can save more than just the earth; they can help protect property owners from rising power 85 .80. When he walks around the firm's Ontario headquarters he shares his s e n s e o f hu m o r to bond(亲近,团结)with his staff. He says "It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do." Humour can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It's a good way to b r e ak t h e i c e(打破沉默)with students and create a more relaxed atmosphere which is good for learning,as long as everyone doesn't spend all their time in h y s t e r i c s!(狂笑)But we have to be careful; not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their clever and well-told joke, others may consider them s a r c a s t i c,(讽刺的,挖苦的)o ff e n s i v e(讨厌的)or just an idiot!According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, a worker or boss who successfully uses humor is seen as both confident and c o m p e t e n t(有能力的),which in turn increases his or her status? He says "Being funny is taking a risk, and being risky shows confidence." His study 'Risky Business: When Humour Increases and Decreases Status' also found that someone who tells i n a pp r op r i a t e(不合适的)jokes is also seen as confident but they're also regarded as incompetent. So telling the right jokes in the office or classroom can spread some happiness but if you still think working and studying is n o l a u g h i n g m a tt e r(严肃的事情),take note of a study published in The Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management in 2006, that found for healthcare workers, emotional exhaustion was significantly lower among those who experienced greater levels of fun at work. And other research has discovered that teams who share more jokes gave more s u ppo r t i v e andc o n s t r u c t i v e statements to each other–and that's no joke!94.How does Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada, try to get along with his employees?95.According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, how doesa worker have to use humor if he or she is to appear confident and competent?96.True or false: A study found health workers got greater levels of emotional exhaustion when they had fun at work.97.Which word used in the article means ' respect and approve of someone or their behavior'?98.How competent is someone seen as when they tell inappropriate jokes?VII. South Bend was one of the first to use bike-share systems, which allow people to park ridesharing bikes on public land. “We love to be early pioneers,” said Buttigieg. “If we work out the safety problem, we w ould be open to welcoming the technology.”“We need to make sure these new transportation systems are lawful and safe for users,”Constance Farrell,a spokeswoman for the city of Santa Monica told CNN. “We would like to see electric scooters continue to operate in the city. They are in line with our goal of multi-modal living and carbon-light living. ” According to Farrell, there have been eight accidents, including one with a serious head injury, in Santa Monica after the scooters rolled out. Users are required to have a driver’s license (驾照),should not ride on sidewalks or have other passengers on board.Bird has given out free helmets to some riders and tells its users to ride in bike lanes, but some users ride on sidewalks, and most U.S. streets don’t have bike lanes.“The global community of cities is going to have to work this all out for scooters,”Buttigieg said. “They can move unbelievably quickly. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet”in food brands. Answer the questions 10%Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a hilarious(非常滑稽的) photograph or sound. Comedians who parody(滑稽地模仿) well known people always tickle my funny bone!(令人发笑) The great thing is that once we've had a good laugh, we feel happier. It would seem therefore, that bringing a bit of humor into more serious situations might be good for us.Places like a humorless office or a tense classroom could sometimes do with a good dose of laughter. I know that in my workplace; a bit of hilarity(欢乐,欢闹) can go a long way towards making it a more enjoyable place to spend eight or so hours a day. Seeing the funny side of things can certainly lift our spirits and that in turn can make us feel better about what we're doing.Maybe we should get inspiration(灵感) from Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada. When he walks around the firm's Ontario headquarters he shares his sense of humor to bond(亲近,团结) with his staff. He says "It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do." Humour can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It's a good way to break the ice(打破沉默) with students and create a more relaxed atmosphere which is good for learning, as long as everyone doesn't spend all their time in hysterics!(狂笑)But we have to be careful; not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their clever and well-told joke, others may consider them sarcastic,(讽刺的,挖苦的)offensive(讨厌的) or just an idiot! According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, a worker or boss who successfully uses humor is seen as both confident and competent(有能力的), which in turn increases his or her status? He says "Being funny is taking a risk, and being risky shows confidence." His study 'Risky Business: When Humour Increases and Decreases Status' also found that someone who tells inappropriate(不合适的)jokes is also seen as confident but they're also regarded as incompetent. So telling the right jokes in the office or classroom can spread some happiness but if you still think working and studying is no laughing matter(严肃的事情), take note of a study published in The Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management in 2006, that found for healthcare workers, emotional exhaustion was significantly lower among those who experienced greater levels of fun at work. And other research has discovered that teams who share more jokes gave more supportive and constructive statements to each other – and that's no joke!94. How does Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada, try to get along with his employees?95. According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia's Wharton School, how doesa worker have to use humor if he or she is to appear confident and competent?96. True or false: A study found health workers got greater levels of emotional exhaustion when they had fun at work.97.
