However, different people have different ways to keep healthy. For instance, some people exercise every day to chase or keep a good body shape; others try to keep a balanced diet. In my point of view, i think the best way to stay healthy is the combination of proper physical exercise and a balanced diet. The reasons can be listed as follows. For one thing, physical exercise not only builds a person’s body, but also helps to reduce his or her unnecessary fat. Indeed, this is very important since the redundancy of fat has been medically proved to be a cause of various disease, some of which are even fatal, like diabetes or hyperglycemia. For another, a balanced diet can provide a person with the right kind and amount of nutrition which is required for the operation of our organs. As we know, a multitude of elements are effective in keeping our body running properly and a deficiency in any of them will result in some unpredictable disease, but a balance diet may prevent this from happening. It goes without saying that the best way to stay healthy istaking proper physical exercise plus living on a balanced diet. In a word, both physical exercise and proper diet are essential to health. 第二次作业:My Favorite SeasonThere are four seasons in a year. Which is my favorite one? Of course the winter! Why? All the family members are back home this time. And sometimes will snow, I like playing after a snow! The world turns white, and it’s very beautiful! I can make snowmen with my friends. First, private cars are a convenient means of transportation. You can go wherever you like. Secondly, there is no doubt that private cars will have a great impact on the economic growth. The rapid car industry growth will contribute much to keeping the country's economy growing at a higher rate in thenear future. But every coin has two sides. The development of the private cars will bring about a series of problems. For example, the polluted air given off by cars will do great harm to our health, too many private cars will lead to traffic jams and a great deal of energy will be wasted and so on.So I think we should take advantages of private cars and make them serve us better. Meantime we hope that satisfactory solutions to these negative problems will be found soon.第四次作业A City to RememberLast year,my parents took me to Beijing. On the first day, we went to the Great Wall. Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are you will receive three different answers. Each person sees the same scene, but each perceives something different about it.
Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who look out the window, one may say that he sees a policeman giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he sees a rush hour traffic jam at the intersection. The third may tell you that he sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children in tow. For perception is the mind’s interpretation of what the senses—in this case our eyes—tell us.
Many psychologists (心理学家) today are working to try to determine just how a person experiences or perceives the world around him. Using a scientific approach, these psychologists set up experiments in which they can control all of the factors. But many would be surprised to learn that twenty million Americans ride motorcycles. Few people realize that motorcycling is fast becoming one of America’s most popular sports.
Many kinds o f people enjoy motorcycling. The average American motorcyclist is between the ages of twenty-one and thirty-five. He owns his own house, and has a wife, more than one child, and at least one car. He is a responsible citizen.
Cycle Magazine, a monthly publication with almost 280,000 readers, claims that about fifty-five per cent of American motorcyclists arebusinessmen, with three per cent in the professions and nine per cent in government service. Such information is offered by motorcyclists in the hop e of improving the general public’s impression of their sport. The public has tended to believe that all motorcycles are ridden by wild, irresponsible, lawless young man.
There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes. Motorcyclists often look dirty; in fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, crushed insects, and bird droppings. For practical reasons they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars.
Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear. That is what is commonly thought.
Of course the danger of motorcycling also helps account for many people’s low opinion of the sport. Its defend ers, however, claim that careful cyclists are in less danger than is commonly believed.
As motorcycling becomes more common in years to come, it will be interesting to see how people in general feel about the sport. IQ contributes about 20 percent to the factors that determine life success, which leaves 80 percent to other forces, including EQ, she noted. Goleman writes that “the vast majority of one’s ultimate status in soci ety is determined by non-IQ factors, ranging from social class to luck”. Emotional intelligence is one of those factors that can be improved or enhanced.

According to Kilgore, understanding and practicing five key concepts can improve your emotiona l intelligence.

Knowing one’s own emotions

Recognize and name emotions you feel; understand why you feel that way; and distinguish between feelings and actions. “As a parent, you can begin now with your children, teaching them about their emotions. But first you have to know your own. You have to be able to tell yourself what you’re feeling,” Kilgore said.

Recognizing emotions in others

The ability to take another person’s perspective, Kilgore said, is a skill that effective managers and supervisors possess. Emotionally intelligent individuals also are sensitive to other people’s feelings and listen well. Kilgore led workshop participants through an exercise designed to illustrate these ideas. She showed two emotionally charged clips from the movies Parenthood and E.T., asking individuals to write down emotions they saw exhibited by the characters’ body language. Participants also wrote down their own feelings during each scene. The group’s list demonstrated the many emotions seen through the films’ characters, as well as the different ways people felt about the same scenes.

Managing emotions

Accept your feelings, but find a balance between over sensitivity or over expression and emotional suppression. Kilgore said her teenage daughters, when angry, have sometimes stomped up the stairs in their home. While some people may find this behavior unacceptable, Kilgore said shefinds it healthy for them to express their emotions rather than suppressing them.

Handling relationships

Being perceptive, applying conflict management skills instead of ignoring conflict, and being considerate and cooperative are important in handling relationships with others. Last night a cigarette end caused a big fire in an office building. The fire had already been out of control by the time the second fire engine arrived. Some massive concrete beams began to collapse. Fortunately, no casualty was reported. Since local government has long banned smoking in al 1 offices, the police are skeptical of a mere accident. They are now seeking evidences to bear out their suspect. It will probably take the police a year to find out the cause of the fire. Anyway, it is not a piece of cake.

大学英语(二)第三阶段一、阅读理解1.How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, so mehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions a nd things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later t hey agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, wh ether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations - the things they bring u p before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experienc e; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and s ad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the numb er of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotio ns. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Abo ve all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in wor ds which sing like music and which by their position and association can m ove men to tears. It is not many years since a man who had to have operation felt all its pain.Long ago, operation had usually to be done while the sick man could feel e verything. Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughin g, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn't seem t o feel pain when they were using this gas. He won't go at a job with the confide nce necessary for success. He is therefore 1 to fail, and the failure will stren gthen his belief in his incompetence.Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience 2 illustrates this. When he was a small boy, he was poor at arithmetic. On September 10, the center hosted a unique class of star musicians: kids and teens. The young players are part of the World Peace Orchestra, or WPO. The group held its first Music for Peace concert inNew York City, with 134 students from more than 60 countries taking part. Musicians were chosen from all over the world. The World Peace Orchestra began in 2013. The nonprofit group brings kids together using the common language of music. To be considered for the orchestra, students first had to be recommended by their teachers and then audition online for a group of judges. Once chosen, professional musicians and teachers then worked with the players to improve their skills. Some of the young musicians played classical instruments, such as violins and flutes. Others played instruments unique to their home country. For example, Amold Mugo, 16, fromKenya, played an instrument called the djembe. The drum is originally fromWest Africa. Well, they do, and you can lean to understand “horse talk” if you pay close attention to the horses you see. When horses live in the wild, other animals try to eat them, so a lot of horse talk is about staying alive. Even now, when most horses live on farms, they watch for danger. For this reason, never walk behind a horse. If you surprise it, the horse might mistake you for a mountain lion or wolf and give a dangerous kick.By watching the ears of a horse, you can get clues to what it's hearing. A horse can tum each ear in a different direction. For a wild horse, this trick is important for survival. The horse can hear something sneaking up behind it while also checking out a threatening noise in front. When a horse lets its ears down, it's feeling safe and relaxed. If horses becomeisolated, they neigh, or “whinny,” calling for company. They're saying, “Where are you? I'm over here!” If a horse snorts(哼) while holding its head high and staring at something, it's saying, “That looks dangerous. Get ready to run!” When two horses meet, they put their noses together and smell each other's breath. It's their way of asking, “Are you a friend?” Horses nicker, too. Nickering is a quiet sort of sound. This friendly noise means they're feeling secure and saying, “Clad to see you.”In the wild, horses live in herds, with all members watching for danger. In a herd, only one horse is the leader, the “boss hoss”. The “boss hoss” is usually an older female. She watches for threats and teaches younger horses how to behave. However, others may want her job. When that happens, she pins her ears back against her head and may even bite or kick to get challengers to back off. She's using body language to say, “Hey, I'm in charge here!” All horses know that the one who makes others move is the leader. Horses relate to people that way, too.Horses have a language of their own. Now you know a bit of what they might be saying.4. What is the general idea of this passage?A. Horses can talk with their owners.B. You can know a bit of horses' language.C. Horses can “talk” in their own way.D. Other animals can also learn language.5. What does the underlined word “isolated” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Lonely.B. Glad.C. Sad.D. Frightened.6. What will a horse do when he wants to know whether another horse is a friend?A. He will let his ears down.B. He and another horse will put their noses together and smell each other's breath.C They both will hold their heads high and stare at something.D. He will give another horse a dangerous kick.7. How will the “boss hoss” deal with her challengers?A. By warning or fighting.B. By watching for threats.C. By teaching younger horses how to behave.D. By relating to people.CConcrete is the world's most consumed material after water. Because it already surrounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity—turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still, "you can make a battery out of a potato," notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts, it still has a long way to go: 200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says. This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices. "We're getting milliamps (毫安) out of concrete batteries—we're not getting amps (安培), "Byrne says." We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge." But she adds that" concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs." The earliest batteries were simple andbulky. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution. "The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future," she says. "We're playing the long game with it."8. What can we learn about the concrete batteries?A. They become increasingly renewable.B. They are the most consumed batteries.C. They are being developed by researchers.D. They will replace energy from the wind and sun.9. Why does Byrne mention a battery out of a potato?A. To show it is easy to build concrete batteries.B. To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.C. To make her statement more interesting.D. To call on people to protect the environment.10. What does the underlined word "bulky" in Paragraph 5 mean?A. HeavyB. CheapC. EfficientD. Small.11. What doesByrne think of concrete batteries?A. They beat today's rechargeable devices.B. They are simple and bulky.C. They have a doubtful future.D. They have a long way to go.DYour house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less selfconscious (难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the color1 s. Research suggests warm color1 s fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm color1 s like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold color1 s make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makesyou less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12inch plate instead of a 10inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.12. The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD.healthy diets13. A home environment in blue can help people ______________.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites14. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights.15. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Waysof Serving DinnerC. Effects of SelfConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Instead, they use rising air currents to remain in the air for hours. The Andean condor is the world’s largest soaring bird. They can weigh up to 15 kilograms. Their wings, when spread out, measure up to three meters. Their main food source is the meat of large animals which have died. Soaring high in the sky allows condors to easily spot possible meals on the ground.Scientists worked together to study the flight patterns of these huge birds and how much effort the birds use when flying. To study the birds while they were in the sky, the researchers attached special devices which could record every beat of their wings. The scientists learned that most of the condors’ flapping— over 75%— came when the birds were taking off. Once in the sky, the birds flew for very long periods of time without flapping at all. In fact, they only flapped their wings for 1% of the time they were in the air. One bird flew for over five hours without flapping, covering nearly 117miles.Soaring without flapping is important because birds bum energy every time they flap their wings. The birds’ soaring isn’t magic. They use the fact that hot air rises to keep themselves up. As hot air rises, it often creates “thermals”— currents of warm air moving upward. The condors soar by making use of these thermals. The tricky part is finding thermals and moving between them. When birds are forced to land and take off again often, it costs them a lot of energy. The researchers learned that to avoid having to land, the condors did most of their non-take-off flapping when they were closer to the ground and looking for a new thermal. The scientists reported that even though all of the condors they studied were young, they knew well how to take advantage of the air currents.4. What can we learn about the Andean condor from the text?A. They live mairly on small animals.B. Their wingspan is at least three meters.C. They rely on hot air to remain high in the sky.D. They are the birds with the strongest flying ability.5. Why was the equipment tied to the birds?A. To measure how far they could fly without flapping.B. Condors flap the most when looking for a new thermal.B. No condor can fly for more than five hours without flapping.C. Condors don’t need to look for thermals when soaring in the sky.D. Soaring by using thermals is probably a natural ability of condors.CRecently,as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his high school team,I was starting to feel sorry for myself and for him.His team was facing adversity(逆境)on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment-it was the opponent's home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan's team was trailing(落后)for three quarters of the game.As for me,I had been dismissed from my job earlier in the day.During my drive home,I kept telling myself that I will find work again in a short time-I am confident in my experience and abilities. This is the same belief that I tried to instill in my son.The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan's team still trailing.I saw the determination on his,as well as his teammates'faces as they fought back to not only tie the game(平局),but then go ahead by three points. Then,a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie the game up again. With a tie game and seconds on the clock,Nathan found himself with the ball and with skill and confidence,he proceeded to make the basket with a defender hanging all over him.The other player was called for a foul(犯规).As Nathan stood at the foul line preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points,I saw the focus and determination on his face, there was no room for self doubt.Nathan was able to tune out all the distractions and nail the free throwwith such skill,it was as if he had done it a thousand times. As I sat there,my heart bursting with pride,it dawned on me.I had taught him perseverance in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt andfeeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn't matter if he wins or loses,at this moment,we both won.8. Even today, the other planets are still too far away for astronauts to fly to. So, while rockets and robots can go to other planets, manned flights have to stay closer to home. Therefore, manned space programs have turned their attention to solving problems related to living and working in space.Currently, NASA's (US National Aeronautics and Space Administration) manned space exploration program focuses on the space shuttle program. NASA now operates three space shuttles, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor. Unfortunately, two of NASA's shuttles, Challenger and Columbia, were lost through accidents.Seven astronauts died in each accident. The program completed 135 missions when the program ended with the successful landing at the Kennedy Space Center on July 21, 2011. These missions have included putting satellites into orbit, photographing the earth, studying space, conducting experiments related to working in space, and connecting with various manned space station in orbit.Throughout the short history of the exploration of space, several space stations have been put into orbit. And it's all because of technology. To the psychologists, sociologists, and generational and media experts who study them, their digital gear sets this new group apart, even from their tech-savvy (懂技术的) Millennial elders. They want to be constantly connected and available in a way even their older siblings don’t quite get. These differences may appear slight, but they signal an all-encompassing sensibility that some say marks the dawning of a new generation. The contrast between Millennials and this younger group was so evident to psychologist Larry Rosen of California State University that he has declared the birth of a new generation in a new book, rewired: Understanding the ingeneration and the Way They Learn, out next month. Rosen says the tech-dominated life experience of those born since the early 1990s is so different from the Millennials he wrote about in his 2007 book, Me, Myspace and I: Parenting the Net Generation, that they warrant the distinction of a new generation, which he has dubbed the "ingeneration"."The technology is the easiest way to see it, but it's also a mind-set, and the mind-set goes with the little 'i', which I'm talking to stand for 'individualized'," Rosen says. "Everything is defined and individualized to 'me'. My music choices are defined to 'me'. What I watch on TV any instant is defined to 'me'. " He says the iGeneration includes today's teens and middle-school years, but it's too soon to tell about elementary-school ages and younger.Rosen says the iGeneration believes anything is possible. "If they can think of it, somebody probably has or will invent it," he says. "They expect innovation."They have high expectations that whatever they want or can use "will be able to be tailored to their own needs and wishes and desires."Rosen says portability is key. They are inseparable from their wireless devices, which allow them to text as well as talk, so they can be constantly connected-even in class, where cellphones are supposedly banned. Many researchers are trying to determine whether technology somehow causes the brains of young people to be wired differently. "They should be distracted and should perform more poorly than they do," Rosen says. "But findings show teens survive distractions much better than we would predict by their age and their brain development. "Because these kids are more immersed and at younger ages, Rosen says, the educational system has to change significantly."The growth curve on the use of technology with children is exponential(指数的), and we run the risk of being out of step with this generation as far as how they learn and how they think," Rosen says.16. Compared with their Millennial elders, the iGeneration kids ______A. communicate with others by high-tech methods continuallyB. prefer to live a virtual life than a real oneC. are equipped with more modem digital techniquesD. know more on technology than their elders17. Why did Larry Rosen name the new generation as iGeneration?A. Because this generation is featured by the use of personal high-tech devices.B. Because this generation stresses on an individualized style of life.C. Because it is the author himself who has discovered the new generation.D. Because it's a mind-set generation instead of an age-set one.18. Which of the following is true about the iGeneration according to Rosen?A. This generation is crazy about inventing and creating new things.B. Everything must be adapted to the peculiar need of the generation.C. This generation catches up with the development of technology.D. High-tech such as wireless devices goes with the generation.19. Rosen's findings suggest that technology ______A. has an obvious effect on the function of iGeneration's brain developmentB. has greatly affected the iGeneration's behaviors and academic performanceC. has no significantly negative effect on iGeneration's mental and intellectual developmentD. has caused distraction problems on iGeneration which affect their daily performance20. According to the passage, education has to ______A. adapt its system to the need of the new generationB. use more technologies to cater for the iGenerationC. risk its system to certain extent for the iGenerationD. be conducted online for iGeneration's individualized needKey:16.
