瑞昌一中11208班英语专项训练10 12
瑞昌一中11208班英语专项训练10 12.2.15.AThere were quite a lot of things that the philosophers of the old times got right and one of those things was that there is a very strong need for lawyers and government in a society. The government looks to protect and help you in times of need and the lawyers are there to fight for your case if you are treated unfairly. Just like then, there is still a need for government to help people when they need help now in today’s world. This sort of help can come from when people ne ed social security benefits because they become disabled after some sort of accident. If you have become disabled in recent days, then you certainly have rights go to find out whether you are qualified to receive the social security disability benefits. The social security disability is for those who have become disabled or are disabled due to some sort of accident that may have happened and that forces you to be out of work. This can be very frustrating because being out of work means that you cannot make money that you need in order to provide for yourself and those you are possible taking care of. This is where the government comes into play. The government will help you out with this and possibly give you money in order to keep yourself from ending up on the streets. They understand that accidents do happen and that there needs to be some sort of help for those who get into accidents and cannot provide for themselves. If you are sure that you have a disability, get in touch with the social security department for more information. Meyers Law Firm can help you get the social security disability benefits you have rights to gain.56. This passage talks mainly about .A. suggestions for you to contact related departmentB. the disabled need protection from lawyers.C. how you ask for help when having an accidentD. the government helps the disabled people57. If you are disabled the author suggests you .A. find out whether you can get the moneyB. go to the related department to treatC. ask your family members to give a handD. provide evidence for the social department58. When having an accident and becoming disabled people need to .A. ask the lawyers for helpB. turn to the government for helpC. fight for their benefitsD. seeking money from the accident59. What does the underlined part mean in the 2nd paragraph?A. Make you homeless.B. Get you to live a happier life.C. Stop you wandering in the street.D. End your poor life.60. The social security disability is given to those who .A. are out of work making no moneyB. have a deadly illness in the hospitalC. become disabled after an accidentD. have the disabled in their familyBMany people take it for granted that black is a color of bad things while white should always mean something good. This may be because, in their opinion, black is related to darkness and white to purity. However, that is not always the case. Did you know that the same colour may mean differently in different places of the world? In the English-speaking world, black is the colour of mourning. People wear black clothes at the funeral. Red is concerned with danger or bloodshed (流血). Yellow is the word for fear. If you are afraid, you are yellow. Yet none of these sayings is true outside the English-speaking world. In China and Korea white is the colour of mourning. In Russia, China and some other countries, red stands for beauty, life and excellence. In Italy and Germany, you are yellow with anger, not with fear.Even within the English-speaking area it is not difficult to find colour contradictions. A redcap in the United States is a porter in a railway station. In Britain, however, a redcap is a military policeman. Both names are logical because both men wear red caps. Similarly, the British term for an American white collar worker is sometimes called a black-coated worker. One does not have to cross an area to find colour differences. Would you rather be red-blooded? If we go back to the origin, we find that both terms are logical as both names suggest. The expression "blueblood" comes from Spain, where some noble families proudly said that they had "blue blood". But then why "blue" blood? Because they were fairskinned, and it is only natural that their blood vessels (血管) stood out appearing blue.61. Yellow is concerned with anger in .A. RussiaB. ChinaC. BritainD. Germany62. The two meanings of the term "redcap" form a difference in .A. pronunciationB. logical relationshipC. customD. climate63. Both Britain and America would probably agree that .A. a black-coated worker is employed in an officeB. black is the color of mourningC. red stands for beauty and excellenceD. a redcap is a porter in a station64. The best title for this passage isA. The Development of the Symbolic use of ColorsB. The Meaning Concerned With CertainColorsC. Colors that Carry Bad MeaningsD. The Origin of Blue Blood.65. When some Spanish called themselves “blueblood”, they actually meant.A. they came from a noble familyB. their faces looked blueC. they had blue blood in their vesselsD. they were fairskinned瑞昌一中11208班英语专项训练10参考答案。

瑞昌一中11208班英语专项训练8 12.2.15.CNo one else knew about the extra club (高尔夫球杆)in Zach Nash's golf bag.It belonged to a friend, and Zach forgot it was there as he played his way to victory in a junior tournament (锦标赛)this summer in Wisconsin, US.The 14-year-old accepted his medal, and celebrated with grandparents who had come from a long way to watch. But when he stopped by his country club to share the news, a professional player noticed something wrong."Count your clubs," he told the teenager.Fifteen—one more than allowed.Zach's eyes filled with tears. If Zach had just won a basketball championship or a soccer game and someone had discovered an offence after the win, it would not have mattered.Bending the rules has become acceptable, if not encouraged, in many sports. It is nothing unusual for soccer players to dive to the turf (假摔)in hopes of drawing fouls (造成对方犯规).Golf is different. In a win-at-all-costs world, the game holds itself to a higher standard.Golf isn't a game where referees watch closely. In golf tournaments, dozens of competitors are spread across acres of land, so officials cannot hope to see each shot.Competitors call penalties on themselves.Players feel the weight of history.Golf dates to at least the 15th century, but it became popular as a pastime (消遣)for the wealthy who seemed to have strict codes for every occasion, even when it came to shooting at each other in fights."It was a sport for gentlemen, not laborers, and gentlemen did not care about winning. They cared about doing the right thing," said Robert Simon, a golf coach at Hamilton College in New York.Honesty became a symbol of honor. When one of the game's early stars, Bobby Jones, was praised for calling a penalty on himself at the 1925 US Open.He replied: "You might as well praise a man for not robbing a bank."So even the error had no effect on Zach's final score—he never used the extra club. The teenager packed up his medal and dropped it in the mail."But this was golf, and rules are rules.I just knew what I had to do," he said. Then came another tournament. Before teeing off, Zach counted his clubs—four times.66.How many clubs is a player allowed to take along in a golf tournament?A.15 B.14 C.16.D.1767.Zach Nash returned a medal he won in a junior tournament because _____.A.he was caught cheating by a player B.he decided to follow the rules of golfC.he used another player's club by mistake D.he made a mistake calculating his final score 68.Which of the following statements about golf is TRUE according to the article?A.Golf players usually do whatever it takes to win.B.Golf referees watch each shot and call penalties.C.Early golf players didn't care about the rules.D.In golf honor comes before victory.69.The underlined phrase "teeing off" in the last paragraph probably means "_____"A.getting started B.getting caught C.leaving D.winning70.What is the main point of the article?A.Zach's medal.B.The history of golf.C.Honesty counts in golf.D.Golf is a rich man's game.DIt is pretty much a one-way street. While it may be common for university researchers to try their luck in the commercial world, there is very little traffic in the opposite direction.Pay has always been the biggest deterrent, as people with families often feel they cannot afford the drop in salary when moving to a university job.For some industrial scientists, however, the attractions of academia (学术界)outweigh any financial considerations.Helen Lee took a 70% cut in salary when she moved from a senior post in Abbott Laboratories to a medical department at the University of Cambridge. Her main reason for returning to academia mid-career was to take advantage of the greater freedom to choose research questions. Some areas of inquiry have few prospects of a commercial return, and Lee’s is one of them. The impact of a salary cut is probably less severe for a scientist in the early stages of a career.Guy Grant, now a research associate at the Unilever Centre for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge, spent two years working for a pharmaceutical (制药的)company before returning to university as a post-doctoral researcher. He took a 30% salary cut but felt it worthwhile for the greater intellectual opportunities.Higher up the ladder, where a pay cut is usually more significant, the demand for scientists with a wealth of experience in industry is forcing universities to make the transition (转换)to academia more attractive, according to Lee.Industrial scientists tend to receive training that academics do not, such as how to build a multidisciplinary team, manage budgets and negotiate contracts. They are also well placed to bring something extra to the teaching side of an academic role that will help students get a job when they graduate, says Lee, perhaps experience in manufacturing practice or product development.“Only a small number of undergraduates will continue in an academic career. So someone leaving university who already has the skills needed to work in an industrial lab has far more potential in the job market than someone who has spent all their time on a narrow research project.”71.By “a one-way street” in Paragraph One, the author means ________.A.university researchers know little about the commercial worldB.there is little exchange between industry and academiaC.few industrial scientists would quit to work in a universityD.few university professors are willing to do industrial research72.The underlined word “deterrent” m ost probably refers to something that ________.A.keeps someone from taking action B.helps to move the trafficC.attracts people’s attention D.brings someone a financial burden73.What was Helen Lee’s major consideration when she changed her job in t he middle of her career?A.Flexible work hours.B.Her research interests.C.Her preference for the lifestyle on campus.D.Prospects of academic accomplishments.74.Guy Grant chose to work as a researcher at Cambridge in order to ________.A..do financially more rewarding work B.raise his status in the academic worldC.enrich his experience in medical research D.exploit better intellectual opportunities 75.What contribution can industrial scientists make when they come to teach in a university?A.Increase its graduates’ competitiveness in the job market.B.Develop its students’ potential in research.C.Help it 瑞昌一中11208班英语专项训练2 12.2.15.AThe 47-year-old singer talks about the new album Symphony(交响乐)that came out of a “very dark time”, including her decision to give up trying to have children. “People have suggested I could adopt,” Brightman says. “But work is central to my life now. And so I am going to put it to one side. After a while not having children becomes the norm and perhaps that might sound alarming, to parents especially, but I have never known anything different. I’m no t hurt by not having children. My life and career are incredibly rich.”Talking about growing up in a large family in Berkhamsted (father a property developer who later committed suicide), she says: “I was gifted as a child, and very musical. I seemed to be good at anything to do with the arts. At 5,I understood the music I was dancing to and had an eye for costume.” She first appeared in a West End musical at 11 and hated boarding school.Brightman led the saucy dance troupe(辣妹三人舞)Hot Gossip and had her first hit with I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper in 1978. At 18 she married a music manager called Andrew Graham Stewart. “I was probably in love but I can’t remember. Girls change such a lot between 18 and 22. It didn’t really work out.” In 1981 she was spotted by Lloyd Webber. She became his leading lady in Song and Dance, Requiem and Phantom of the Opera. They married in 1984.Brightman says she felt hostility(敌意) “from the beginning. I haven’t tried to understand it. I’ve done very well everywhere else, especially the US, where I now live, I just accept it for what it is. The more you are away from Britain, the more you appreci ate it. Brightman is very popular around the world except in AmericaB. Brightm an’s musical style is a mixture of opera, pop and jazzC. the British people don’t like her for her style of musicD. Brightman is much older than Andrew Lloyd Webber57. Brightman decided to give up having children because _____.A. she could adopt oneB. her life and career were unbelievably rich without childrenC. she felt it normal not to have childrenD. she was too busy58. The following statements are true except ______.A. Brightman first appeared in a West End musical at 5B. Brightman disliked life on the campusC. Brightman was very gifted when she was youngD.The saucy dance troupe made Brightman famous59. The underlined word in the fourth paragraph probably means _____.A. locatedB. admiredC. followedD. found60. What does the author try to say in the last paragraph by quoting Brightman’s words?A. Brightman has to accept the fact that she is not liked in BritainB. Brightman lives in America but she loves her own countryC. The British coldness towards Brightman led to her hatred to her homelandD. Brightman was at a loss why she was not welcome in BritainBPushy parents and teachers who “hothouse” the under-5s risk causing damage to the childre n’s long termdevelopment, a leading education expert said.Lilian Katz, Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, said that four-year-olds engaged in reading and writing went on to perform worse academically than those engaged in imaginative learning. They scored higher in tests at the age of 5, but children whose first year at school was stimulating outstripped them four years later. The findings suggest that the government's structured approach to early years' learning could be storing up problems for children. They also raise serious questions about the plan for all children to be able to read by the age of 6.In many countries formal teaching does not start until children are 6 or 7 and have improved their social and manual skills. Children start learning to read and write at 6 in the United States, France and Germany, and at 7 in Finland and Sweden.Professor Katz said that in many schools the courses were "boring children to tears". Much academic teaching required children to learn by memorizing pieces of information out of context, she said. Teaching in reception class should instead allow children to develop their intellect by exploring their environments and asking questions."Research suggests the benefits of formal academic instruction for four- and five-year-olds seem to be promising when they are tested early, but considerably less so in the long term. When these children are followed over a period of three or more years, those who had early experience in more intellectually engaging curricula were more likely to do well in school than their peers, who had received early academic instruction." She advocates teaching children through first-hand experience and play, in mixed-aged classes. This can include puppet shows, drawing or running a pretend shop in the classroom.61.According to the passage, those who “hothouse” the under-5s would probably _________.A. prefer a lot of interaction and stimulation while teachingB. teach in a lively way to motivate kids’ interestC. push the kids to memorize pieces of informationD. care about the kids’ physical development62.What does the underlined word “ outstripped” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. did better thanB. looked down uponC. caught up withD. performed worse than63.According to Lilian Katz, the government’s s tructured approach to early-years learning __.A. is necessary for improving children’s reading and writing abilityB. needs to be improved to develop children’s academic abilityC. will cause problems to children in their future learningD. has more advantages than disadvantages64.The message the author wants to deliver through the passage is that formal teaching _____.A. can start at different times in different countries.B. should not be started too earlyC. is best carried out in Finland and SwedenD. should include teaching children social and manual skills65.Which of the following is NOT the opinion of Lilian Katz?A.
