Reading Comprehension (60 points)Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on ANSWER SHEET I.Passage OneAmericans and Arabs are different in their space habits. Arabs prefer close contact. Dr. Hall has explained that the Arabs belong to a touch culture and in conversation, they always envelop the other person. They hold his hand, look into his eyes, and bathe him in their breath.Dr. Hall’s interest in man’s use of space developed i n the early nineteen fifties when he was Director of the Point Four training program at the Foreign Service Institute. In talking with Americans who had lived overseas, he found that many of them had been highly uncomfortable because of culture differences. Such discomfort is usually referred to as culture shock. The problem is that, relatively speaking, Americans live in a noncontact culture. Partly, this is a product of our puritan heritage ( 清教徒文化遗产). Dr. Hall points out that we spend years teaching our children not to crowd in and lean on us. And in situations where we ourselves are forced to stand close to another person on crowded subways, for example, we turn our eyes away, and if actual body contact is involved, tense the muscles on the contact side. Most of us feel very strongly that this is the only proper way to behave.61. When the Arabs talk to you, they ______.A. try to be as close to you as possibleB. keep a certain space from youC. hold you tightlyD. do not allow you to feel their breath62. From the information in paragraph 3, it is obvious that ______.A. the American way is the only right way to behave.B. the puritan heritage stresses noncontact cultureC. American children are more polite than those in other countriesD. American people usually cannot make themselves understood63. When you line up to wait for your turn in the United States, you should ______ your front neighbor.A. stick toB. lean onC. keep a certain distance fromD. stay far away from64. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. People from different cultures handle space in different ways.B. Many of the Americans who had lived overseas were bothered by culture differences.C. Misunderstandings often develop between Americans and Arabs in social contacts.D. Dr. Hall is interested in culture differences, especially man's use of space.65. It is true that ______.A. a noncontact culture is usually referred to as culture shockB. there is evidence that Americans belong to a touch cultureC. there is evidence that Arabs share a noncontact cultureD. our use of space is influenced by our culturesPassage TwoIt seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yoruself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth? But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage and concern for others. In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks.66. Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins?A. Women are born to be beauties.B. Women like to show off their beauty.C. Women try to maintain their beauty by dressing up.D. Women are proud of their beauty.67. According to the author, in order to stay young and attractive, women should ______.A. follow the fashionB. dress up in beautiful clothesC. do more exercisesD. enrich their mind68. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. As a woman grows old, her beauty will gradually, disappear.B. However old she is, a woman with some excellent qualities can still maintain her beauty.C. Even a plainly dressed woman may have pure and real beauty.D. A woman with a young mind never feels old.69. The word relative (line 1, paragraph 3 )most probably means ______.A. similarB. comparativeC. relatedD. independent70. The author believes that ______.A. women should lay more emphasis on their own qualitiesB. beautiful clothes can make women more attractiveC. women have to show their beauty through their looksD. women are more curious about new things than menPassage ThreeSports fans all over the world recognize the name Michael Jordan. From Taiwan to Tennessee. kids wear clothes with his picture on them. Jerseys(球服)with his number 23 on the front, jackets with the Bulls on the back, and Air Jordan sports shoes all reflect the fame of this superstar. Michael Jordan has become the most famous attraction of the world’s favorite spectator sport.Michael Jordan was born in 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up Michael did not look like a future superstar.H e was very shy and didn’t like to talk to other people about himse lf. He was also very short. He showed little promise of having a future career in basketball. When he tried out for the freshman team in high school, Michael didn’t make it. The next year, however, he grew tall enough to join the team.Michael’s road to fame began at the University of North Carolina. He brought an acrobatic styleto the game that few had seen before. Michael used his quickness and strength to reach the basket again and again. He became famous for his powerful slam dunk(灌蓝). Basketball fans from all over the world began to take notice. In his first year in NBA.Passage FourExercise, everyone advises! But immediately, when you try, you run into trouble. There is so much contradictory, sometimes incorrect advice about exercising that you become confused. Test yourself on the following true false quiz. It will tell you what you need to know.1. To lose weight you should always "work up a good sweat" when exercising.False. Sweating only lowers body temperature to prevent overheating; it does not help you reduce weight. You may weigh less immediately after a workout, but this is due to water loss. Once you replace the liquid, you replace the weight.2. You burn more calories jogging one mile than walking the same distance.False. You use the same amount of energy whether you walk or jog the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed doesn't matter. Of course, if you jog rather than walk for 30 minutes, you'll cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.3. If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within minutes after you finish exercisi ng, you' ve exercised too much.True. Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn't be pounding, and you shouldn’t be exhausted. It is clear she knows what it takes to get young people excited about science. But it was not always that way. When she first started teaching college freshman classes almost two decades ago.she says she struggled to grab the attention of her younger students. She was used to teaching juniors, as she had for a few years prior to that. By junior year, students majoring in physics are committed to learning, she says. But when it comes to teaching a large lecture hall of 100-plus first-year students, first impressions are make or break“I did not grab their attention on the first day-that was my mistake,"she says.“I missed this opportunity to bond with them from the very beginning."By the second semester, she adjusted her approach to make her lecture halls feel smaller, and get her students engaged. The key, she says, has been to make herself approachable and her instruction personal."“Talk to your students before and after class, walk up and down the stairs when you teach your class rather than stay on the stage. And don't just lecture, talk to them.make it interactive. When you ask the question, you expect the answer,"she says. “If you don't have the answer, you go to them and you still make them work with you-it's not always easy, but when you' re close to them, it's definitely easier."11. He says automated cameras can help fill that blank.“The question is, how do we arrange them in a fair way with the public support?"Adkins said.No one likes getting a speeding ticket. But the objections to automated traffic enforcement go deeper than that. “It is doubtful that safety is the real goal,"said Jay Beeber, with the National Motorists Association, a driver advocacy group."We need to make sure that our cities have all the tools that are effective to reduce traffic deaths,"said Laura Friedman, a state lawmaker in California who sponsored the state law authorizing automated cameras.“We make sure it can't be a money grab, because the money can only be used for physical speed-lowering improvements on the same streets where you're using the cameras,"she said. “So it's really about changing the culture and slowing traffic down."16. 2004年成人高考专升本大学英语试题及答案

What happens when his space requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, ant reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns an even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even killeach other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Over the years people have made up new languages with this aim. At least six hundred languages have been developed in the search for a language which all human beings would be able to speak. The most famous one, Esperanto(世界语),was the idea of Ludwig Zamenhof . a doctor in Warsaw . He published a book about his new language in 1887.To encourage people to learn the Language, he made it as simple as possible.Esperanto has never been accepted as an official world language, but it has been suggested as an auxiliary. By 1950 it had been taught to one and a half million speakers, and it was spoken in six hundred schools. Today Esperanto is spoken by about eight million people, and more man one hundred newspapers and magazines in the language are published regularly throughout the world. Thousands of books have been written in Esperanto, including those translated from other languages.Today the need for a new auxiliary language like Esperanto seems less obvious. Throughout this century English has grown more and more important. It has become a second language for many millions of people. The fact that more are learning English shows that the use of English is still growing worldwide. No One would deny the usefulness of a word language, but not many people think that Esperanto is likely to play such a role.55. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city's highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city's buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.Despite the good news, civil engineers aren't resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place. In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, that bend \\rithOLlt breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports.Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake's vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building toshift in the opposite direction. The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.59. One reason why the loss of lives in the Los Angeles earthquake was comparatively low was that .A) new computers had been installed in the buildingsB) it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highwaysC) large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holidayD) improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways60. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is toA) counterbalance an earthquake's action on the buildingB) predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracyC) help strengthen the foundation of the buildingD) measure the impact of an earthquake's vibrations61. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage caused by earthquakes attention should be focused on .A) the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital constructionB) the development of flexible building materialsC) the reduction of the impact of ground vibrationsD) early forecasts of earthquakes62. The main purpose of. this passage is mostly to .A) compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S.B) encourage civil engineers to make extensive use of computersC) outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materialsD) report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildingsSection BDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column, mark the corresponding letter on the Answer with a single line through the centre.63.首先,他如此努力工作并非只是为了钱,他一心为了教育青年人并设法激励他们在各方面取得进步。

Two men he works with live right nearby, and they could carpool (合伙使用汽车) and save about a thousand gallons of gas a year. And me, I'm guilty too. I went out and left the radio blaring in my room all Saturday morning. So last night at the dinner table we all agreed to do everything we could to conserve energy. Faster showers. Lower thermostats (温度调节器). Fuller care. (51)It's a fact that this country's using up energy faster than we produce it. I read that we may run out of oil — forever — in thirty ears. So terrible. The 5questions or unfinished statements are numbered36 through 40.Do you want to know something about the history of weather? Don’t look at the sky. Don't look for old weather reports. Looking at tree rings is more important. Correct weather reports date back only one century, but some trees can provide an exact record of the weather even further back.(53) It is natural that a tree would grow best in a climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall would limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be determined by reading the pattern of rings in a tree trunk. (54) To find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree trunk from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the other rings, then it is certain that plenty of sunny and rainy weather occurred. If the rings are close together, then the climate was bad for the tree.Studying tree rings is important not only for the history of weather, but also for the history of man. In a region of New Mexico you can find only sand --- no trees and no people. However, many centuries ago a large population lived there. They left suddenly. Why?A scientist studied patterns of dead tree rings which had grown there. He decided that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees. Trees were necessary to make fires and buildings. So, after the people destroyed the trees, they had to move.In this instance studying tree rings uncovered an exciting fact about the history of man.36. It is understood that in a favorable climate ____.A) people can cut down most of the trees in New MexicoB) trees in New Mexico will grow big and tallC) tree rings grow far apartD) tree rings grow close together37.
