Others are younger but all must be at least 21 years old. This is one example of how the open university is different from all other universities. Its students must either work full-time or be at home all day, for instance mothers of families. They don’t have to pass any examinations before they are accepted as students. This is why the university is called “open”. The university was started in order to help a known group—people who missed having a university education when they were young. The first name for the open university was “The University of the Air”.The idea was to teach “on the air”,in other words on radio and television, most of the teaching is done like this.Radio and television have brought the classroom into people’s homes. But this,on its own, is not enough for a university education. The open university student also receives advice at one of 283 study centers in the country. 36 weeks of the year he has to send written work to a “tutor”,the person who guides his studies. He must also spend 3 weeks every summer as a full-time student. Tutors and students meet and study together,as in other universities. At the end of the open university’s firt year, the results were good. 3 out of 4 students passed their examinations. If they do this every year, they will finish their studies in 4 or 5 years.61.All the students at the open university must be no less than 21 years old.A.less than 21 years oldB.less than 20 years oldC.no less than 21 years oldD.full-time workers62.The university is called ”open” because its students are not given examinations before theystart studying.A.can be very young or very oldB. are not given examinations before they start studying.C.are people who just left schoolD.must study full-time63.The known group was the people who did not go to university when they wre young.A.the people who started the open universityB.the young people who wanted to go universityC.the people who were at school 20 years agoD.the people who did not go to university when they wre young64.Most of the teaching is done on radio and television.A. on radio and televisionB.at one of 283 study centers in the countyC.in the classrooms at the open universityD.in summer65.The open university student can study full-time when the students of other universitiesspend their summer holidays.A.every weekendB.36 weeks a yearC.at the end of the first yearD.when the students of other universities spend their summer holidays〔三〕Atoms are all around us. They are the bricks of which everything is made. Many millions of atoms are contained in just one grain of salt, but despite their small size they are very important. The way an everyday object behaves depends on what kinds of atoms are in it and how they act.For instance, you know that most solid objects melt if they get hot enough. Why is this? It is the effect of the heat on the object’s atoms. All atoms move constantly. When they are not, they move faster.Usually the atoms in an object hold together and give the object its shape. But if the object grows hot,its atoms move so fast that they break the force that usually holds them together. They move out of their usual places so that the object loses it shape. Then we say that the object is melting.66.One grain of salt contains many millions of atoms.A.a few thousand atomsB.many millions of atomsC.several heated atomsD.one million atoms67.The way an object behaves depends on the both A and C.A.kinds of toms in itB.number of atoms in itC.way its atoms behaveD.both A and C68.Atoms in an object move at all time.A.at all timeB.only when the object is heatedC.whenever they grow hotD.unless the object has melted69.An object holds its shape because its atoms usually hold together.ually hold togetherB.move very fastC.are very hotD.are not moving70.When its atoms leave their usual places,we say that an object is melting.A.shrinkingB.expandingC.changing placesD.melting〔四〕More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half. Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not,you cold be fined up to $50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear yourbelt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind. However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing(倒开) your vehicle;or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle;or if you have a valid(有效的) medical certificate which excuses you from waring it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. But people in the Australian outback can’t get to a doctor quickly. The nearest doctor is sometimes hundreds of kilometers away so they have to call him on a two-way radio. This special doctor is called the “flying doctor”. He visits sick people by plane. When someone is very sick, the doctor has to fly to the person’s home. His plane lands on a flat piece of ground near the person’s house. Sometimes the doctor has to take the patient to hospital. Flying doctors take about 8,600 people to hospital each year. However, most of the time the person isn’t very sick, and the doctor doesn’t have to visit. He can give adviceon the radio from the office at the flying doctor centre. He can tell the patient to use some medicine from a special medicine chest. There is one of these chests in every home in the outback. Each bottle, tube and packet in the chest has a number. The doctor often says something like this: “Take two tablets from bottle number 5 every four hours.”A man called John Flynn started the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1927. he had only one plane. Today here are 14 flying doctor centres, 29 planes, 14 full-time doctors and several part-time doctors, nurses and dentist.1. Do doctors at the centre work full time? _____.A. All of them doB. Some of them doC. None of them doD. The article does not say【答案】D D A D BPassage 3One silly question I simply can’t stand is “How do you feel”. Usually the question is asked of a man in action----a man on the go, walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right.” But “You’ve put a bug in his ear”, maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he did not realize that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, “How do you feel?”Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask “How do you feel?” if you’re visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train, or sitting at his de sk working, it’s no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him “How do you feel?”Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age”, he said, “either you feel all right or you’re dead.”1.According to the writer, greetings such as “How do you feel?”_____.A. show one’s consideration for othersB. are a good way to make friendsC. are proper to ask a man in actionD. generally make one feel uneasy2.The question “How do you feel?” seems to be correct and suitable when asked of_____.A. a man working at his deskB. a person having lost a close friendC. a stranger who looks somewhat worriedD. a friend who is ill3.The writer seems to feel that a busy man should _____.A. be praised for his effortsB. never be asked any questionC. not be botheredD. be discouraged from working so hard 4.George Bernard Shaw’s reply in the passage shows his _____.A. cheerfulnessB. clevernessC. abilityD. politeness5.“You’ve put a bug in his ear” means that you’ve ______.A. made him laughB. shown concern for himC. made fun of himD. given him some kind of warning 【答案】D D C B DPassage 4Acting is such an over-crowed profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is “Don’t!” But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company(剧团), usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convinceopposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!1.From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession _____.A. sought after by too many peopleB. too difficult for young peopleC. for slim people onlyD. one can go into without special training2.For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that _____.A. he will become a film star at long lastB. he will become a stage managerC. he will be well paidD. he will end up without any success3.The film producer found Connie Pratt one morning when she was _____.A. at work in a bicycle factoryB. driving past him in her carC. going to a film studioD. waiting for a bus4.A few weeks after the test, Connie Pratt found herself _____.A. the most famous actress of the worldB. playing the leading female role in a playC. as famous as the greatest actor of the worldD. no less famous than the leading actor of the day 5.The concluding sentence “chances like this happen once in a blue moon” means _____.A. this is something which happens once in a whileB. this is a highly profitable chanceC. this is something highly possibleD. this is a very rare chance【答案】A D D B DPassage 5Although the United States covers so much land and the land produces far more food than the present population needs, its people are by now almost entirely an urban society. Less than a tenth of the people are engaged in agriculture and forestry(林业), and most of the rest live in or around towns, small and large. Here the traditional picture is changing: every small town may still be very like other small towns, and the typical small town may represent widely accepted view of the country, but most Americans do not live in small towns any more, half the population now lives in some thirty metropolitan areas (large cities with their suburbs) of more than an million people each, a larger proportion than in Germany or England, let alone France. The statistics(统计)of urban and rural population should be treated with caution because so many people who live in areas classified as rural travel by car to work in nearby town each day. As the rush to live out of town continues, rural areas within reach of towns are gradually filled with houses, so that it is hard to say at what moment a piece of country becomes a suburb. But more and more the typical Americans live in metropolitan rather than a small town environment. (225 words)1.If now American has 250 million people, how many of them are engaged in agriculture and forestry? _____.A. About 25 millionB. More than 25 millionC. Less 25 millionD. Less than 225 million 2.Which of the following four countries has the smallest proportion of people living in metropolitan areas? ___.A. United StatesB. GermanyC. FranceD. England3.What’s the meaning of the word “metropolitan” in the middle of the passage? _____.A. Of a large city with its suburbsB. Of small and large townsC. Of urban areasD.
