Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.●The Japanese word for tsunami means harbor wave.●Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal (潮汐的) waves but this term has fallen out of favor because tsuna mis are not related to tides.●Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caus ed by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.●As a tsunami approaches the shore (海岸), water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow (浅的) enough the water may be pulled back hundreds of meters. If you are in the area, you can know that a tsunami is on the way when you see this phenomenon.●Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning sys tems in place to give people as much time as possible to move to a safe place.●When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast) th ey slow down but increase in height.●An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in Dece mber 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people i n 14 countries.●In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern co ast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people.●The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake re ached heights of over 40 meters in some areas, wiping out co astal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.1.How many causes of tsunamis are mentioned in the text?A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.2.In the Tohoku earthquake over 15,000 people died mainly because of _____.A.the earthquake itselfB.the lack of warning systemsC.the tsunami caused by the earthquakeD.the nuclear accidents caused by the tsunami3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Over 200,000 people were killed in 14 countries because of the earthquake in Dec.2004.B.Sometimes tsunamis are said as tidal waves, because they are related to tides.C.The warning systems in some regions help people move to a safe place.D.If you see water move to the coast, there will be a tsunami on the way.4.The text is developed mainly by _____.A.listing some factsB.giving some examplesC.providing some numbersD.making some comparisonsBThere are robots all around us. Some do very complicated jobs like flying airplanes and driving subway trains. And some do one simple job. When an automatic washing machine is switc hed on, water pours in. The machine waits until the water is w arm enough for washing clothes. It does this by “feedback” (反馈). Information about what is happening is feed back into the robot to tell what to do next. Our eyes, ears and other senses are our feedback. They tell us what is going on around us. So robots are like human beings in two ways. They work and they have feedback. In some ways robots are better than human beings. They wor k quickly and do not make mistakes. They do not get bored d oing the same job over and over again. And they never get tir ed. So robots are very useful in factories. They can be taught to do many different jobs. First their electronic brain must be s hown how the job is done. A person moves the robot’s“arms”and “hands” through each part of the job.The most intelligent robots can move and see. Their eyes are cameras. Their fingers can feel shapes and sizes of the object s. These robots have computer brains linked to their eyes and fingers, which control their actions. The expensive “Times Ne w Roman” --- The most intelligent robots are used in scientific research. They do such job as handling radioactive materials.5. What does the author seem to inform you about robots?A. They should be greatly improved.B. They will probably take over in the future.C. They are very helpful and useful to humans.D. They are machines that break down a lot.6. The fact that a robot never gets bored doing the same job means that_____.A. it is very much like human beingsB. it can do boring jobs for peopleC. it will never bore peopleD. it will work much better than human beings7. The robots used for scientific research________.A. are not very cleverB. are very cheapC. are very bigD. are very costly8. According to the passage, which of the following statement s is TRUE?A. In most ways robots are better than human beings.B. Robots have eyes, so they can see.C. Scientists sometimes do scientific research by using the int elligent robots.D. Robots can work but they have no feedback.CEdgar felt quite excited at the thought of his first swim of the summer. With the sun shining down so strongly, the sea was certain to be warm enough. He walked quickly along the sea-front towards the steps that led on to the sands. He smiled ch eerfully at the passers-by. He had just smiled and raised his hat to an elderly lady wh en a man with a camera caught his arm and stopped him. Ed gar heard a little buzzing noise from the camera.“Y our photograph, sir, in glorious colour in just one moment if you please,” said the man in one breath. Then the buzzing stopped, and he held the photograph in his hand and was wa ving it to and fro. In a moment he handed it over, and Edgar sa w the bright blue splash of his shirt half filling the picture.“Seventy pence, sir,” the man said. “It’s the bargain of your holiday.”“Seventy pence,’’ Edgar repeated, mildly. “For this?” He star ed at the photographer.“They’re normally eighty-five, sir,but for a single subject I make a cut-price offer. It’s the best value you’ll get in Chadwell. ”“You’ll have to make a better offer,” Edgar said. It was a goo d photo though, he thought, so bright and clear. His hat was h eld high, and he was smiling broadly at the old lady, whose ar m and handbag came into a lower corner. He had had no idea that he was being snapped. He thought he was really quite a good-looking chap.“That’s as good as any studio job that would cost you poun ds•” said the cameraman. “It’s better in a way because it’s so natural. Only seventy pence, sir. ”“I've never paid so much for a snap in my life. It simply isn’t worth that kind of money. It’s not as if I need the thing. Look, I’ll give you twenty-five.”“No, I can do that. Each of these instant colour shots costs me 50p ~ that's the price of the blank frame,so you see…”“Criminal, criminal,” Edgar broke in. “You want a profit of fort y per cent. Well, not at my expense, Tm afraid. Til give you yo ur 50p and that5s that."“Le t me see, then. ” The man suddenly took the photograph out of Edgar’s hand. “I can’t waste any more time with you. It’s 70p or I keep it. ”“Keep it,” Edgar said. He turned, looked out to the sea, and then walked quickly away.9.Why do you suppose Edgar was in Chadwell?A.It was his hometown.B.He was there on holiday.C.He was in the making of a film.D.He was there to have his photograph taken.10.Edgar smiled at and raised his hat to the lady because .A.he thought he recognized herB.he wanted the photograph to be amusingC.she was having her photograph takenD.he was feeling excited and cheerful11.What did Edgar think of the photo?A.He thought it made him look like a criminal.B.He liked it but thought it was too dear.C.It annoyed him because he hadn’t expected it.D.He thought it was a bargain at the price.DSurveys of American teenagers find that about half of them do not get enough sleep on school nights. They get an average of sixty to ninety minutes less than experts say they need. One reason for this is biology. Experts say teens are biologi cally programmed to go to sleep later and wake up later thanother age groups. Yet many schools start classes as early as seven in the morning. As a result, many students go to class f eeling like sixteen-year-old Danny. He is an active teen—except in the morning. “Getting up in the morning is pretty terri ble. I’m just very out of it and tired. Through the first and seco nd period I can hardly stay awake,” he said.Michael Breus is a psychologist (心理学家)). Teens,he says, need to sleep eight to nine hours or even nine to ten hours a night. He says sleepy teens can experien ce a form of depression (抑郁)that could have big effects on their general well-being. This depression can affect not just their ability in the cl assroom but also on the sports field. So what can schools do about sleepy students? The psychologist says one thing they can do is start classes later in the morning. Studies show that students can improve by a full letter grade in their first and se cond-period classes.Eric Peterson is the head of St. George’s School in the nort heastern state of Rhode Island. He wanted to see if a thirty-minute delay (推迟)would make a difference. It did. He says visits to the health centre by tired students decreased by half. Late arrivals to th e first period fell by a third. And students reported that they w ere less sleepy during the day. Eric Peterson knows that changing start times is easier at a small, private boarding school lik e his. But he is hopeful that other schools will find a way to do the same.12.The underlined word “this” in the second paragraph refers t o .A.children’s getting up lateB.children’s staying upC.children’s not getting enough sleepD.children's sleeping habits13.The passage mentions the story of sixteen-year-old Danny to show how .A.he hates getting up in the morningB.teens can be affected by a lack of sleepC.he turns from an active boy to a tired school childD.teens hate school14.The last paragraph tells us .A.it’s not easy to change the sleeping habitsB.a thirty-minute delay in classes would make no differenceC.students in St. George’s School can be late for classD.starting classes later in the morning can be good for teens15.What would be the best title for the passage?ter classes, less sleepy teensB.Early birds catch wormsC.Early to bed and early to riseD.Less classes, more happiness第二节七选五(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项中有两项为多余选项。

From the incident, the author learnt a lesson that we should _________.A. criticize those who don't helpB. hurt the self-respect of others no moreC. think more of those who are in needD. stop talking and start to helpBWhen I saw my 10-year-old avoiding the dirty plate in the sink or my 8-year-old feeling uncomfortable about the wet sand in her hands,I'm reminded of a time when I was unwilling to get my hands a little dirty. My parents owned a 500-acre farm in Montana to raise animals, such as cows, sheep, horses and so on.It was during the time of new life (a newborn lamb or a calf) that my favorite childhood mem ory took place. One exceptionally cold day,I was checking on the sheep with my mother when she spieda ewe(母羊) in trouble. The poor thing was trying to deliver her baby lamb and needed our help.My mother calmly held the ewe's head and instructed me to grab hold of the two protruding(突出)legs.I hesitated, and must have had quite a look of panic on my young face.T he slimy little things were definitely not something I wanted to touch. But I worked up my courage and wrapped my fingers around them.I can still recall the feel of unexpectedly weak l egs and their sharp little hooves as if it happened yesterday. My heart pounded in fear and excitement as I pulled with all my strength. The lamb was delivered safely, and I'd never seen anything so beautiful.I was no stranger to seeing farm animals being born, but to have a hand in it was something I treasured then and w ill treasure forever.I remember feeling excited with delight to see “my lamb” being licked clean by her mother, and I'm sure everyone got very tired of hearing me tell and ret ell my heroic story.Looking back,I'm so glad that I didn't refuse to get my hands dirty. If I had ,the wonderful moment and the precious memory would have been lost.5.What impressed the writer most during her childhood?A.Her dirty little hands.B.Her parents’ large farm.C.Helping deliver a baby lamb.D.Raising animals on the farm.6.How did the author feel when she was asked to help a ew e deliver her baby?A sympathetic. We already knew that not getting enough sleep can lead t o an increased risk of getting sick, but Nathaniel Watson, a ne urologist and sleep specialist at the University of Washington School of Medicine, said this new research helps explain why. Sleeping poorly can block specific genetic processes in the ce lls that make up your immune system, which is responsible for fighting off infections and diseases, according to the new stu dy. “Your immune system is not functioning the way it was me ant to when you are deprived of sleep,” Watson said. This stu dy is the first one that Watson and his colleagues are aware of that looks at what happens to the immune system’s DNA wh en you’re not getting adequate sleep. The researchers followed 11 pairs of identical twins for the stu dy. One twin reported sleeping at least seven hours per night, while the other slept approximately one hour less per night. L ooking at identical twins helped control the fact that sleep nee ds vary by person, Watson explained. Genes account for abo ut 50 percent of our sleep needs, meaning identical twins are the best-case scenario (方案 ) for getting a good comparison. The researchers took blood samples at the end of the study, which revealed that the immune system of the twin who slept l ess was less active than the twin who slept more. Those who slept less were actually making fewer proteins, the molecules that our bodies run on. “They had an under-performing immune system,” Watson said of the shorter sleep ers, “which would put them at higher risk of getting sick.”To control other potential factors that could affect sleep need and immune health, the researchers didn’t include people fro m the study who had diabetes, depression or other mental he alth problems and sleep disorders. They also left out shift wor kers, smokers, drug users and drinkers.9. What do the underlined words in Paragraph 2 mean?A. change sleep pattern.B. benefit from sleep.C. have to sleep.D. lack sleep.10. Why did the researchers choose identical twins for the stu dy?A. To find participants more easily.B. To make the results more accurate.C. To make the study more interesting.D. To show sleep needs vary by person.11. What does the author most probably want to show in the l ast paragraph?A. Many factors can lead to sleep disorder.B. The findings of the study can be reliable.C. Poor sleep could lead to many problems.D. The findings of the study remain to be tested.DMy 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most of the kids swim there, and there are plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.Still, the firefighter's first words "You need to come up here to the Stillwater River" made me catch my breath, and his follow-up words gave me relief: “ Your son is OK.”When I got to the river, I immediately saw the fire truck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sit ting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.I hurried over to him. "You OK?"I asked.“Yeah," was all he said. But my eyes begged for an explanati on. I didn't get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest. The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. H earing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore. In an age in which the word "hero" is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day , I realized the real thing in my son.The teens are stubborn a nd self-centred, but that didn't mean they have no desire to do good .Still shocked by my son's daring, I drove him home.Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him - but h e had precious little to say.The only words he said were,“What's for supper?"I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the trage dy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got u p, I half wanted him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to s tart a new day. Watching from the window, I was reminded th at still water often runs deep.12.Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?A.He was an excellent swimmer.B.The water of the river is shallow.C.He was old enough to swim.D.The rocks can be of help if there's danger.13.The underlined part "who tends to play his cards close to his vest" probably means ________A.Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids B.Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinksC.Anton always has a desire to help othersD.Anton seldom changes his mind14.In the mother's eyes, what her son did was__________ A.dangerous but interestingB.meaningful but difficultC.unexpected and courageousD.awful and absurd15.What might be the best title for the passage?A.My Son, My Hero B.Anton, A Silent BoyC.A Good DeedD.A Proud MotherEAre you looking for a young adult novel?
