As he walked into the consulting room, he said, "Well, here I am again." and put twenty-five dollars on the table. The doctor looked at the businessman carefully for a moment, then smiled and put the money into the drawer of his desk. "Thank you," he said. "And what can I do for you today?" Quack A quack is "a fraudulent or ignorant pretender to medical skill" or "a person who pretends, professionally or publicly, to have skill, knowledge, or qualifications he or she does not possess". The word "quack" derives from the archaic word "quacksalver" of Dutch origin, meaning "boaster who uses a salve." In the Middle Ages the word "quack" meant "shouting". The quacksalvers sold their wares on the market shouting in a loud voice.2. Medical Laboratory A medical laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are done on clinical specimens in order to get information about the health of a patient. Laboratory tests are an integral part of the workup of any patient, and constitute up to 80% of a physician's diagnosis andtreatment choice. In many countries, there are two main types of labs that process the majority of medical specimens. Hospital laboratories are attached to a hospital, and perform tests on patients. Private (or community) laboratories receive samples from general practitioners, insurance companies, and other health clinics for analysis. These can also be called reference laboratories where more unusual and obscure tests are performed. As medical technology advances, doctors are able to get more and more tests done in shorter and shorter amounts of time. While in the past a doctor might order a potassium (钾) and glucose (葡萄糖) and it would take hours for the results, now a doctor can order a full chemistry panel of 20 or more different analytes (被分析化学物) and get the results within an hour. The results are also much more accurate and reliable now than in the past.A Doctor or a Quack? 医生还是江湖郎中?1 The modern doctor's business is an extremely simple one, which could be acquired in about two weeks. This is the way it is done.2 The patient enters the consulting room. "Doctor," he says, "I have a bad pain." "Where is it?" "Here." "Stand up," says the doctor, "and put your arms up above your head." Then the doctor goes behind the patient and strikes him a powerful blow on the back. "Do you feel that?" he says."I do," says the patient. Then the doctor turns suddenly and lets him have a left hook under the heart. "Can you feel that?" he says viciously, as the patient falls over on the sofa in a heap. "Get up," says the doctor, and counts ten. The patient rises. The doctor looks him over very carefully without speaking, and then suddenly fetches him a1 现在干医生这一行非常简单,大约只需两个礼拜就能学会。

Unit 1The Story of Steve JobsThis is the text of the Commencement Address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, at Stanford University, delivered on June 12, 2005.1 I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?2 It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking, "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?"They said, "Of course."My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college. This was the start in my life.3 And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trusted that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions

Think over these questions.1.What ways of getting rich do these pictures suggest?Reference answer: The four pictures represent four different ways of getting rich. The first picture suggests that one can get rich quick by buying stocks. The second picture shows that people can become rich through inheritance of fortunes, either of their own parents, or of some wealthy persons. The third picture indicates that marriage could be a passport to the kingdom of wealth. That is to say, a man or a woman could be a rich person if his or her spouse is rich. The fourth picture tells people that lotteries make millionaires.2. If that is the method of study, I wouldn't hold your breath.2 However, if that weren't a popular notion, millions of dollars wouldn't roll in every time there was a lottery somewhere.3 An Egyptian archeological exhibit was touring through town with many interesting artifacts for the public to see. One in particular, was an ancient document believed to uncover a mysterious formula for acquiring wealth.4 Having read about this ancient document in the early edition of the local newspaper, John Holiday borrowed his neighbor's camera for the purpose of taking a snapshot of the document, so he could study it later.5 After getting a very clear image of the document, he went to the library and started reading books on ancient languages that are now dead. Strangely enough, John had a hidden talent for languages. He never developed this or any other talent, because he was lazy. He would always look for the easy way to do everything he had to do in life. However in this case, a shot at sudden wealth was too much of an incentive for him to pass up.6 In a few hours, he figured out the code of the language and began to decipher the ancient text. It told of a statue, thousands of years old, in the central part of Egypt, hidden in a cave miles from a large pyramid. The text stated that the statue had eight orifices and that the seeker of wealth must place precious gems in each of the1 一夜暴富当然不错。

Then he climbed into a tall tree to hide. From up high in the tree, Ali Baba saw forty men on forty horses. Each man wore a saber and a dagger in his belt. They looked very fierce. Ali Baba could see at once that they were thieves. The forty thieves dismounted in front of a huge rock, and one, who seemed to be captain, said, "Open, Sesame!" And a door flew open in the rock. Then they all went inside and the door closed behind them.Ali Baba could hardly believe what he had seen! He did not dare to climb down from his tree —the thieves might come out at any moment and find him. He waited a long time.At last the door opened, and the forty thieves came out. Their captain said, "Shut, Sesame!" The door closed, and the forty thieves rode away. When they were out of sight Ali Baba came down from the tree. He walked up to the huge rock and said, "Open, Sesame!" The door at once opened, andAli Baba stepped inside. He found himself in a largeof treasure —rich silks and carpets, gold and silverware, and great bags of gold. Think over these questions.Reference answer: The four pictures represent four different ways of getting rich. Which do you think is the quickest way to get rich?Reference answer: All these four methods of getting rich quick could turn a penniless guy into a millionaire overnight, but it seems to me that winning a lottery is the quickest way of making people rich. Just pay a dollar or two and you could become a rich person overnight! But on the other hand, such an opportunity is very rare.- 2 -- 3 -by Mark Edgemon 1 Getting rich quick is nice if you can do it, but the phrase usually implies acquiring great sums of wealth with very little effort. Unit 1 The Story of Steve JobsThis is the text of the Commencement Address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, at Stanford University, delivered on June 12, 2005.1 I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.

Reporter: Hello, Mr. Jobs. Can I have an interview with you about your speech?
Jobs: Sure. Reporter: Can you tell your story to us again?
Jobs: Just as what I said, my biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate and she decided to put me up for adoption. However, neither of my parents who adopted me went to college. My biological mother agreed at last after they promised that someday I would go to college.
Reporter: Your parents did do what they had promised. They sent you to college.
Jobs: Yes, I went to Reed College 17 years later. Reporter: But you didn't graduate from college. Can you tell us why you dropped out?
Jobs: OK. I dropped out six months after I started my studies in Reed College. On the one hand, the tuition was so expensive that all my parents' savings were being spent on my tuition. On the other hand, I could not see the value of attending college. So I dropped out. Reporter: What do you think of your decision of dropping out?
Jobs: Just as I mentioned in my speech, that was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. Since I had dropped out of Reed College, I took a calligraphy class and learned about serif and sanserif typefaces which were designed into the Mac 10 years later. Otherwise, personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.
Reporter: We learn a lot from your story. Thanks for granting my interview.
Mark: Dad, look! I found an ancient document. Do you know what it is about?
John: Oh, that ancient Egyptian document. It uncovers a mysterious formula for acquiring wealth. Mark: Really? How do you know that?
John: Maybe you won't believe it, but I do have a hidden talent for languages. Mark: Indeed, what does this document talk about?
John: It tells of a statue, thousands of years old, in the central part of Egypt, hidden in a cave miles from a large pyramid. Mark: Will people acquire wealth if they find that statue?
John: No, you should prepare some special things first. The text states that the statue had 8 orifices and that the seeker of wealth must place precious gems in each of the holes in the statue. Mark: That must cost a lot!
John: Um, nearly 1.2 million dollars. But that is a really great investment. Ina: You seem to prefer solitude, don't you, Aunt Stephina?
Phina: Yes, I prefer living in my tiny cottage and solitude to the comfortable but rather noisy householdalong with the family. Ina: Do you still remember last time when I took George to see you and told you of our engagement?
Phina: Of course. I am delighted. Especially when I heard that he intended to settle in South Africarather than return to England, I was relieved.
Ina: But George is thinking of paying a lightning visit to England before we are married.
Phina: Really? Ina, you must prevent him. You must not let him leave you before you get married. Ina: Could you tell me why, Aunt Phina?
Phina: Perhaps you think I'm old and have the silly fancies of the old, but I should like to tell you my ownlove story, and then you can decide whether it is wise for your man to leave you before you are married. Ina: It must have been a romantic love story!
Phina: I met an Englishman, Richard Weston, when I was quite a young girl. We loved one another fromthe first moment we met. He asked me to marry him on the evening of my 18th birthday, but my fatherhated the Uitlanders. Ina: What happened then?
