Eighty-six（缺货；恕不招待）——⼀个颇为怪异的数字俚语词汇，常见于酒吧和餐馆。
它的渊源嘛，据说与探⼦的暗号有关。
20世纪初，美国禁酒运动时期，位于纽约市贝德福德街86号的⼀家地下酒吧为了应对警察的突然袭击，和买通的探⼦约定：⼀旦有情况，探⼦在电话中的告密语就是：Eighty-six it（藏好酒，赶快把顾客请出店外）。
还有⼀种说法认为，早期英国商船的标准舱位是85个，由此，第86个⼈就意味着“搁置在岸、船主⽆法为之服务”；也有⼀种观点认为，纽约⼀家餐馆，菜单上的第86道菜备受欢迎，所以往往供不应求，常常出现“缺货”的情况。
所以，如果在餐馆⾥听到“We're eighty-six on lettuce”，您可千万别发楞，它的意思可是：“⽣菜没了”。
再举⼀个例⼦：We have to eighty-six the hors d'oeuvres because they were too expensive. （开胃菜太贵了，我们只得去掉。
）
值得⼀提的是，随着时间的推移，eighty-six的词义已⽇趋扩⼤，开始含有“丢掉”、“⼲掉”之意。

千万别看字面将five-and-ten翻译为“五和十”，它真正的意思是“廉价商品；杂货店，小零售 店”，一定要记牢啦。 怎么理解five-and-ten表示廉价商品意思？原来five-and-ten是five-and-ten-cent store的简写， 美国人说习惯了就直接说five-and-ten，这里的five表示5分钱，ten表示1角钱。

③ ten out of ten

② ten a penny
该短语与penny有关，penny是便士，即英镑中价值最小的货币单位。用一便士a penny 就能 买到的东西一般情况下不珍贵，而且价值较低。 因此，ten a penny的意思是“用一便士能买到十个”，表示某事物“随处可见，价格很低；不值 钱”，又可以形容一类人或一种行业“到处都有，多得遍地都是”。
