在知道引导词特征前,我们要先知道一个概念,那就是定语从句一定跟在名词之后,即N.+连词。

那我们要判断这个从句是否是定语从句,就要先知道从句通常都有什么词来引导。

▶名词分类通常,名词分几类,连词就分几类。

引导定语从句的连词大约分为两类:wh-连词和that 连词。

这两个是决定了几乎所有的定语从句引导词。

我们刚才说定语从句的引导词由名词的类别来决定,那我们要先知道名词分为什么。

关于名词的分类,我们之前有很多,我们曾经学过名次分为可数名词和不可数名词;专有名词和非专有名词等等。

我们知道,连词通常都是指代这个名词的,和指代有关的词,一旦涉及到人的时候,就会变得非常复杂。

如果是男的,代词用he;如果是女的,用she;如果指的是说话的对方,用you;如果是自己,用I等等。

从这里我们会发现,如果指代的是人,根据指代的不同,所使用的代词也会不同。

因此,第一类词就指的是由指代人的名词为先行词的定语从句,那引导词用指人的就行,that是万能的,此外who,whom,whose都可以指人,不过that,who,whom是指人;而whose+名词,表示谁的...东西,通常用作定语。

第二大类可以把名词分为非人的名词。

非人的名词,我们可以把它分为:①形容没有生命存在的,如桌子,电脑等。

指桌子或电脑,只用一个it来代替它就行;②形容有生命的存在,不管是养什么宠物,如猫、狗等,用it也可以指代了;③形容比较抽象的感情,如爱情,憎恨,感恩等,it也可以用来指代。

?对于形容词我们已十分熟悉了,如: a good book ,形容词 good 用来修饰书 book 。

我们也可以用一个句子来修饰名词,这种句子叫做形容词性从句,它起修饰名词的作用,又被叫做定语从句( The attributive clause )。

但有一点不同的是这个从句不是像形容词那样放于名词前,而是放在名词之后。

它所修饰的名词又被叫作先行词,如: Do you know the scientist who gave us the talk this afternoon ? 这句中的主句是 Do you know thescientist ? (你知道那位科学家吗?)而 who gave us the talk this afternoon (他今天下午给我们作的报告。

)是定语从句。

所以这两句话合为一体即是:你认识今天下午给我们作报告的那位科学家吗?这里 scientist 叫作先行词,而 who 叫作定语从句的引导词。

who 在定语从句中起主语的作用,who 的数与它的先行词相同。

其实定语从句很有规律,总结如下:在关系代词中that既可指人又可指物、既可作主语又可作宾语,因此,除了在非限定性定语从句中,用that一般不会出问题。

关系副词的用法比较单一,它们从句中只起状语的作用,表示时间的就用who门,表示地点的就用where,而why只修饰一个词,即reason。

定语从句所修饰的词叫先行词,因为它总是处在定语从句的前头,比定语从句先行一步。

引导定语从句的词叫关系词,包括关系代词和关系副词。

关系代词:who,which,that作从句的主语whom,which,that作从句的宾语(可省略)whose从句中作定语以下情况只能用that,不能用which:i.先行词为不定代词all, little, none,any,every,no,much, anything, nothingii. 先行词有最高级和序数词修饰时(包括: the only, the very, the same, the last, the next等) iii.先行词既有人又有物的时候以下情况只能用which,不能用that;①引导非限制性定语从句(包括代表整个主句的意思时)②介词+关系代词的结构中关系副词:when指时间,在定语从句中作时间状语where指地点,在定语从句中作地点状语why指原因,在定语从句中作原因状语,只修饰reason。

2019考研英语语法:定语从句解析
上节课我们说到,定语从句是由三大要素构成,基本公式是:定语从句=先行词+关系词+句子。

但是同学们应该知道,考研英语主要考察大家对于长难句的理解,所以在某种程度上,要想理解定语从句,正确地将翻译中包含定从的句子翻译出来,那我们首先要判断定语从句的位置。

其实,定从开始的位置很简单,因为通常都有从属连词引导,关键是要找到其结束的地方,那么怎么判断呢?其实很简单,大家只要记住一句话:从关系词入手,到第二个非并列的谓语动词前就可以了。

比如英语一翻译中曾考过的一个句子:
In fact, it is difficult to see how journalist who do not have a clear grasp of the basic features of Canadian Consititution can do a compentent job on political stories.
大家来看一下这个句子中的定语从句到哪里结束。

首先我们知道开始的地方是由关系词who引导的,那么按照刚刚我们总结的:到第二个谓语前结束,是不是词句就应该在can之前结束了呢?所以答案很明确,词句中的定语从句就是who do not have a clear grasp of the basic features of Canadian Consititution。

找到定语从句结束的地方后,我们来看一下该定语从句修饰谁。

从从句谓语得知,修饰的对象应该是复数概念,而且指人,所以很明确,该句的先行词就是journalists。

既然已经找到了定语从句,也明确了修饰对象,因为这是一道翻译题,所以我们接下来就来看看如何将这个定语从句翻译出来。

相信很多学生对定语从句的处理方法就是通通放到所修饰的名词前,但是大家来看一下该句译文:事实上,很难明白没有清楚理解加拿大宪法的基本特征的记者是如何胜任政治新闻报道的。

大家有没有发现,这样的句子在汉语中很少见,其实就是因为汉语写作忌讳头重脚轻,而且,汉语喜欢用短句子,而英语则喜欢用长句子。

所以大家有必要记住一个由灌顶与从句的翻译原则:大8小8 的原则。

其意思就是说如果这个定语从句中的单词量小于8个,那我们就将这个定语从句前置,译成定语从句的N. ,从属连词不译。

如果这个定语从句中的单词量大于等于8个,那我们将定语从句后置,顺译即可,这对大家来说不难。

所以词句最佳的译文应该是:事实上,我们很难明白,如果记者没有清楚的理解加拿大宪法的基本特征,那么他们是如何胜任政治新闻报道的。

当然,在翻译的过程中,为了明白语句之间的逻辑关系,我们可以增加必要的连接词。

总而言之,大家在定语从句这一块儿需要掌握以下3个方面:
(1)怎么识别一个句子是不是定语从句根据从属连词来判断;
(2)识别之后,找定语从句结束地方到第二个谓语动词部分结束;
(3)怎么理解和翻译根据大8小8 的原则翻,定语从句小于8个单词,前置,从属连词不译,定语从句大于等于8个单词,单独成句,后置,顺译即可,从属连词要翻译出来。
