My family could barely get by on my small income from driving a cab. One late night I responded to a call for a cab ride. To my surprise, when I arrived at the address, I found it was a frail old lay who was awaiting me. After she got into the cab, I engaged her in conversation.I learnt that she was going to the hospice. Her doctor said she didn’t have very long. The old lady told me to drive through the downtown area. She pointed at some old buildings, telling me those were the places where she used to work or live. When the cab finally pulled up in front of the hospice, I didn’t accept her fare. In the rest of the day, I was lost in thought. Though I had to make a living, I lived not for the sole purpose of surviving. When circumstances looked gloomy, the small favour I had done could be a candle light. However faint the light was, it managed to warm up a soul and ennobled me as well. I did take pride in that small favour.Unit TwoLoveEnhance Your Language AwarenessWords in Action▆ Working with Words and ExpressionsIn the box below are some of the words you have learned in this unit. No one will deny that some people make friends simply for mutual utility. Once the ground for such friendship disappears, the friendship also breaks up. However, a lot more people long for “soul pals”— those who possess virtues and with whom we can go through trials and tribulations together. Then how do the athletes make themselves fortunate enough to be so highly honored? The champions who have mounted the winners’ stand can offer an answer based on their own experiences. First, in the course of training, they visualize themselves as champions. Once their dreams of becoming champions take shape, they will cling to them courageously. What’s more, top performers are driven to bring out their best. They discipline themselves and s queeze in every possible minute to practice every day. Despite their relentless efforts, they may sometimes fail to win or narrowly miss a gold medal, yet they believe in themselves and never lose heart. They are ready to take on the most psychologically and technically challenging tasks or competitions. In reality, all champions have experienced lots of hardships on their way to the vital break of their lifetime. So we won’t and can’t say that a champion is lucky. After all, luck only strikes those prepared to capitalize on it.。

When we're adults, we long for the carefree days of our youth when we could play all day without worry. This is one of the greatest ironies of life. Indeed, "the grass is always greener on the other side." It is a harsh truth that humans always want what they can't have. It's our nature. That's why it's good practice to instill in our children a healthy respect for childhood. Too many adults seem to be in a hurry for children to grow up. We always ask them, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" We repeatedly tell them, "You can do/have that when you're older." We continually encourage them, "When you grow up, the world will be yours and you can make your dreams come true." It's no wonder, then, that children seem to be in such a rush to grow up, get older, and demand everything that we tell them is coming to them.Children should be free to play the day away. We should encourage them to use their imagination, create entire worlds in a cardboard box, and explore their backyard as if they were exploring an undiscovered country. You cannot put a price on an active and fertile imagination, nor can you overestimate the value of an inquisitive mind, a respect for the environment, and an urge to question why everything is as it is. These traits are all developed and nurtured when we're children and, without them, we would not be able to function as adults in the modern world.Research has shown that children are happiest and healthiest when they have the freedom to act like children. This may seem obvious, but it's often forgotten as parents push their children tostudy harder, practice longer, and essentially act like adults. It's important to remember that children are constantly learning. Therefore, they are also learning as they're playing. Exploring nature fosters a respect for the environment that may lead children to become biologists or naturalists. Creating with paint and crayons instills a love of art that might help develop young artists or musicians. Playing make-believe stimulates the imagination in a way that writers, filmmakers, and actors find most useful. Building with blocks helps the mind understand how thingsare constructed and might lead to an interest in engineering. It's true that play helps develop skills that will be used later in life. However, this shouldnot be the sole purpose of play. Children should play because they're children. It's how they stay happy, healthy, and young. Why should we push them to be something they're not?41. Which of the following sentences is the main idea of this passage?A. It is a harsh truth that humans always want what they can't have.B. Too many adults seem to be in a hurry for children to grow up.C. Children should be free to play the day away.D. It's true that play helps develop skills that will be used later in life.42. Many games help children appreciate potential careers.D. Children should concentrate on their schoolwork above everything else.43. "The grass is always greener on the other side" means _____.A. other situations always seem better than the ones we are inB. people always lack confidence in themselvesC. people prefer to live in a less barren landD. people always want their children to grow up fast44. Specifically, they showed that average donations to one nonprofit organization dropped by around10percent in the workweek after the time switch compared with four weeks before and after the change. In some states that do not observe Daylight Savings Time, donations remained unchanged. With over half of the people living in parts of the developed world reporting that they rarely get enough sleep during the workweek, the finding has implications beyond the week we spring forward, the researchers say."Lack of sleep shapes the social experiences we have and the kinds of societies we live in,"says neuroscientist Ben Simon of the University of Califomia,Berkeley To test the link between sleep loss and generosity,Ben Simon and her team first brought23 young adults into the lab for two nights. The participants slept through one night and stayed awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed a standardized questionnaire rating their likelihood of helping strangers in various situations. For instance, whether they would give up their seat on a bus to a stranger or offer a ride to a coworker in need.About80percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived than when rested. The researchers then observed participant'brain activity in a functional MRI machine. comparing each participant's neural activity in a rested versus sleep-deprived state. That showed that sleep deprivation reduced activity in a network of brain regions linked to the ability to empathize with others. There's always a possibility that some other variable besides sleep is causing this decline in generosity, says behavioral economist David Dickinson. But this experiment enabled the researchers to draw a convincing line from changes to the brain that appear during sleep loss to real-world behavior.Chronic sleep loss in the modem world is a serious problem,Ben Simon says. But unlike many other large-scale problems-think climate change or political polarization(极化)-this one has a ready solution.”If you think about promoting sleep and letting people get the sleep they need, what an impact that could have on the societies we live in."32.The experiment focused on whether sleep loss can make peopleA.less generousB.lonelyC.moodyD.uncommunicative33.What did Ben Simon think of the finding?A.It provides a ready cure for sleep lossB.It brings about long-term effects on society.C.It is well received among developed world.D.It is not convincing because of some variables.34.What can we learn about the experiment from paragraph4?A.It adopted diverse methods during the test.B.It aimed to improve people's act of generosity.C.It analyzed different kinds of experiment resultD.It involved different participants in the two stages35.What is the passage mainly about?A.Ready solution to solve sleep lossB.More people tending to suffer sleep loss.C.The standard method of testing generosity.D.Sleep loss making people less generous.第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。

综合英语3期末试卷 得分_________ Part Ⅰ Reading Comprehension Passage A Since Insight exposed the U.S. Postal Service’s program “Under the Eagle’s Eye”, the eyes of many privacy advocates have focused like a laser on the agency. “Warning! The post office c ould report YOU as a drug dealer or terrorist,” reads a press release from the Libertarian Party. Until the Postal Service drops its orders to postal clerks to report certain legal financial transactions as “suspicious activity”, the Libertarian Party and others are urging consumers to purchase money orders, wire transfers and cash cards elsewhere. But now Insight has learned that it’s not just purchases of these financial instruments that the post office reports as suspicious. In a training video obtained by Insight, after a jewelry store owner hands a postal clerk $50,000 cash to put on his postage meter, the clerk is told to report this as suspicious transaction. Even though it may be perfectly legal, using this much cash is “strange”, the video says. “If putting a lot of money on your postage meter is a sign of criminal activity, I’m afraid we’re going to have to have a little talk with our own office manager,” says George Getz, spokesman for the Libertarian Party, which uses a postage meter to send mass mailings. “It seems unbelievable. Do you launder money 32 cents at a time? That’s crazy.” According to the Postal Service, even transactions of a few thousand dollars in cash should arouse suspicion. But privacy advocates say it is normal, for instance, for restaurant or store owners who want to send out promotional mailings to go to the post office and put the cash receipts for that day on their postage meters. “Under the Eagle’s Eye” does not apply to purchases of stamps and “philatelic” it ems. But why, then, does the program apply to postage on meters, which is merely “electronic stamps”, asks Rick Merritt, director of Postal Watch. 1) Insight is most probably ________. Had he and his peers received meaningful instructi on in “character formation”, there’s a good chance their sense of respect for themselves and others would have held back the ridiculing and created a better atmosphere. Many youngsters have a difficult time seeing any moral dimension to their actions. Cons equently, schools stress academic achievement but don’t always identify and reinforce the habits that students need to become virtuous. But there’s hope. More and more schools, from the rich suburbs to the inner cities, are realizing that good test scores aren’t enough if students aren’t taught to be responsible members of society.High expectations for good behavior also have helped students academically at Cleveland Elementary, the Washington school that holds the weekly classes. Last year, it scored in the 70th percentile in reading on the Stanford-9, a national achievement test, and in the 86th percentile in math---well above the average for many prosperous suburbs.I also wove character education into my lessons as a third-grade teacher at Disney Elemen tary in Burbank, Calif. We had a “virtue of the month”, and each day after lunch, my class read a story demonstrating that virtue. The lessons produced academic benefits, too. After reading Aesop’s “The Tortoise and the Hare”, one student who was having tr ouble learning multiplication raised his hand and said: “Learning the times tables is really hard, but I know I need to persevere.”We can’t afford to lose any more children to actions that spring from moral ignorance.Parents and schools must provide children with a strong academic foundation, but they need to teach them common values as well. Virtue is a lesson that ladies and gentlemen in all schools can---and must---learn now.6) The fifteen-year-old freshman Charles “Andy” Williams is ________.A)shot deadB)shot woundedC) a drug-takerD)arrested7)Many youngsters have a difficult time because ________.E)they fail to apply moral principle to their behaviorF)they can’t playing trick on othersG)they fail to create a healthy atmosphereA)they abuse drugs8)“Times tables” in Line 5, Para. 5 probably mean ________.a)multiplication tablesb)time sheetsc)time tablesd)tables and charts9) That the students in weekly class at Cleveland Elementary get highermarks in reading and math illustrates that ________.A) rich neighborhood helped students make academic progressB) academic achievement could result from character educationC) “virtue of the month” project was the key to the academic benefitsD) students benefited a lot from story-telling10) It can be inferred from the passage that the writer ________.A) calls on people in every line to take moral lessonsB) is a parent of school childC) is a teacher in a primary schoolD) is a moral lesson teacherPassage CBig Ben is one of London’s best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are lighted. You even know when parliament is in session, because a light shines above the clock face. The four dials of the clock are 23 feet square, the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. Minutely regulated with a stack of coins placed on the huge pendulum, Big Ben is an excellent timekeeper, which has rarely stopped. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock-tower itself, but to the thirteen-ton bell hung within.
