But a New Jersey based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking, but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging, between 2000 and 2014, global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash. Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. “It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute aliter of water,” Terra Cycle founder, Tom Szaky, said. “Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food.”So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? Terra Cycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, Terra Cycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products. They’re now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to provide money for the process. And so far, it’s working.“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,” communications director of Terra Cycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with t he amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always looking for new waste streams to address.”4.What does Terra Cycle intend to do?A.Search for recyclable materials for use.B.Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.C.Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.D.Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.5.The underlined word “trash” in Paragraph 2 probably means .A.rubbishB. poisonC. disasterD. ruin6.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.The effective use of cigarette ends.B.The process of recycling cigarette ends.C.The difficulty in recycling cigarette ends.D.The reason for breaking down cigarette ends.7.What Albe said in the last paragraph implies that .A.there is more and more waste to be recycledB.it is difficult for Terra Cycle to recycle everythingC.Terra Cycle is trying to meet the challenge of new wasteD.Terra Cycle has successfully recycled a large amount of wasteCRats and other animals need to be highly tuned to social signals from others so that they can identify friends to cooperate with and enemies to avoid. To find out if this extends to non-living beings, Loleh Quinn at the University of California, San Diego, and her colleagues tested whether rats can detect social signals from robotic rats. They housed eight adult rats with two types of robotic rat --- one social and one asocial---for 5 days. The robots rats were quite minimalist, resembling a chunkier version of a computer mouse with wheels---to move around and colorful markings.During the experiment, the social robot rat followed the living rats around, played with the same toys, and opened caged doors to let trapped rats escape. Meanwhile, the asocial robot simply moved forwards and backwards and side to side.Next, the researchers trapped the robots in cages and gave the rats the opportunity to release them by pressing a lever.Across 18 trials each, the living rats were 52 percent more likely on average to set the social robot free than the asocial one. This suggests that the rats perceived the social robot as a genuine social being. They may have bonded more with the social robot because it displayed behaviours like communal exploring and playing. This could lead to the rats better remembering having freed it earlier, and wanting the robot to return the favour when they get trapped, says Quinn. The readiness of the rats to befriend the social robot was surprising given its minimal design. The robot was the same size as a regular rat but resembled a simple plastic box on wheels. “We’d assumed we’d have to give it a moving head and tail, facial features, and put a scene on it to make it smell like a real rat, but that wasn’t necessary,” says Janet Wiles at the University of Queensland in Australia, who helped with the research. The finding shows how sensitive rats are to social cues, even when they come from basic robots. Similarly, children tend to treat robots as if they are fellow beings, even when they display only simple social signals. “We humans seem to be fascinated by robots, and it turns out other animals are too,” says Wiles.8.Quinn and her colleagues conducted a test to see if rats can .A.send out warning messages to their fellowB.distinguish a friendly rat from a hostile oneC.attain sociable traits through special trainingD.pick up social signals from non-living rats9.What did the asocial robot do during the experiment?A.It followed the social robot.B.It played with some toys.C.It moved around alone.D.It set the trapped rats free.10.According to Quinn, the rats released the social robot because they_ .A.tried to practice a means of escapeB.expected it to do the same in returnC.wanted to display their intelligenceD.considered that an interesting game11.It can be learned from the text that .A.rats are more sensitive to social cues than expectedB.rats are more socially active than other animalsC.rats behave differently from children in socializingD.rats appear to be adaptable to new surroundingsDYou’ve probably heard that brick-and-mortar retail(实体零售) is in trouble. Even industry giants are closing hundreds of stores. Given retail’s gradual change to mobile and e-commerce, you may be wondering. What will retail look like in the future? Nobody knows. But here are a few things you can expect to see based on current technology.Ultrafast delivery is coming. Today, the normal practice is two-day delivery. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s changing. In fact, a surprisingly high 25% of consumers said that they would abandon their orders if one-day delivery wasn’t avail able. Of course, that’s just the beginning. Two-hour delivery is coming in the foreseeable future, and Amazon has already been trying 30-minute delivery.Your kitchen will resupply itself. You won’t have to worry about running out of essentials like coffee, pet food or snacks because your containers will sense stock levels and replace those items without you having to lift a finger. No more waking up to find your coffee store is empty or last-minute trips to the grocery store because you forgot to buy pet food.Know exactly what’s in stock and where. Have you ever gone to a store hoping to buy something, only to learn that they were out of stock? A new feature from Google Home allows people to ask Google Assistant to find in-stock products at the closeststo re. For example: “Google, where can I find the Nintendo Switch console?” An assistant will tell you how many stores have it right then and how close they are. Of course, it isn’t currently available for all stores in all locations, but you can already see a future when it has become standard.Convenience, experience, and options---retail will take on a new look.12.How does the author develop the passage?A.By arguing and debating.B.By asking and answering.C.By analyzing and commenting.D.By comparing and concluding.13.What can we know from Paragraph 2?A.Consumers can’t get their orders in one day now.B.Superfast delivery has widely been used now.C.The delivery will be in two days in the future.D.It is possible to deliver goods within two hours in the future.14.According to the passage, what will happen in the future?A.Shopping will be more convenient and effective.B.Industrial giants will rule the whole retail trade.C.Retail will disappear gradually.D.People will ask Google Assistant to purchase goods.15.What’s probably the best title of the passage?A.How Will We Run the Retail Trade in the Future?B.How Will New Technology Change the World?C.What Will Retail Be Like in the Future?D.What Benefits Will High-tech Bring in the Future?阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I got a free airplane ticket, but had to pay the hotel in cash, which I really couldn’t afford. I found a travel website where a discounted 3-night stay was purchased from a recently opened hotel.About three weeks before the trip, I had to regretfully cancel and only then did I realize the room, while transferable to another person, couldn’t be changed to a later date and wasn’t refundable. For the next two weeks, I tried selling it on Craig’s list with no success. Five days before the “big weekend”, I gave up trying to get any money back and decided I’d contact some acquaintances who live in Chicago and offer someone a free “staycation”. After trying a handful of people, all of whom already had their own plans, I was determined to have the room not go to waste. That’s when it suddenly occurred to me that I was looking at the rooms in the wrong way. Instead of viewing them for vacation purposes, surely there must be a way to put them to good use, and that was when the idea that some sort of shelter might be able to use it hit me. I eventually found one whose focus is aiding victims of domestic violence. This particular onewas willing to listen to my out-of-left-field story and made it easier to transfer the rooms. The shelter was working with a desperate woman and her daughter, who were fortunately able to make use of the room. I was later told by the shelter “they had a blast”.41. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that the author ________.A.had a tight budget for his holidayB.bought his flight ticket using cashC.planned to go on business in ChicagoD.ordered a 4-day getaway from a website42. What was the author’s first choice when he realized the situation?A.Making the trip himself.B.Doing a favor to a friend.plaining to the authority.D.Getting his money back.43. What do you think of the author?A.Rich and considerate.B.Fortunate and humorous.C.Kind-hearted and determined.D.Modest and optimistic.CA recent study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has found a clear link between the color of a taxi and its accident rate. An analysis of 36 months of detailed taxi, driver and accident data from two fleets of yellow and blue taxis in Singapore suggested that yellow taxis have fewer accidents than blue taxis. The higher visibility of yellow makes it easier for drivers to avoid getting into accidents with yellow taxis, leading to a lower accident rate. The study was led by Professor Ho. To test whether there was a causal relationship between the color of a taxi and the number of accidents the taxi had, the research team analyzed data collected by the largest taxi company in Singapore. The researchers found that yellow taxis have about 6.1 fewer accidents per 1,000 taxis per month. The researchers also studied the economic effect of changing the color of the entire fleet of taxis to yellow. The Singapore taxi company involved in the study owns about 16,700 taxis in a ratio(比例) of one yellow to three blue taxis. If a commercial decision is made to switch from blue to yellow taxis, 76.6 fewer accidents would occur per month or 917 fewer accidents per year. Assuming an average repair cost of $1,000 per car and a downtime of six days, switching the color of all taxis to yellow could produce an annual savings of $2 million.“We are eager to continue to validate (证实) the findings of our study by looking at the use of yellow in other types of public transport, such as school buses. For instance, we hope to compare the accident rates of yellow school buses against other colors to find out if yellow is indeed a safer color for school buses. Besides, we are also interested to look at private-hire vehicles and do a comparison of the accident rates of vehicles that are of different colors,” explained Professor Ho.46. Why do yellow taxis result in fewer accidents?A.Because yellow can be seen more easily.B.Because yellow signals a warning of danger.C.Because drivers tend to be more careful in yellow taxis.D.Because people act more quickly in yellow surroundings.47. The underlined word “fleets” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.A.colorsB.typesC.brandsD.groups48. What’s Professor Ho’s study based on?A.Physical risks taxi passengers experience.B.The economic effect of changing taxi color.C.Data from Singapore’s largest taxi company.D.Personal reports from taxi drivers worldwide.49. What do Professor Ho’s words in the last paragraph suggest?A.School buses should be painted yellow.B.Their findings are worth popularizing.C.Yellow should be widely used in public transport.D.Their study will be furthered.50. What can be the best title for the text?A.Caution: Yellow Taxis AheadB.Safer to Ride in Yellow TaxisC.The Preferred Color — YellowD.Colors and AccidentsDWhen you eat out in a restaurant, it is not unusual to hear people yelling, “Let me get this one!”and sometimes see them pushing or arm wrestling to fight for the privilege of paying the bill. These fights are often very loud and active. Each person involved shows an honest desire to pick up the bill, and in the end, all the people at the table give the winner praise and gratitude. In fact, figuring out who will get the bill is always a headache for Chinese people at formal meals. Although the people hosting the meal are very likely to pay the check, it is a common practice to make a token (象征性的) effort to pay the bill, but you will embarrass them if you do end up actually chipping in (凑) some cash.In recent years, going Dutch has been accepted by many young people. But older generations who fear “losing face” still find it embarrassing and mean to calculate each person’s share of the bill. As travel guide brand Lonely Planet noted, it is considered “the height of unsophistication (不懂人情世故)”.But these days, thanks to digital payment apps, splitting the bill electronically is becoming a widely-accepted idea. Even people from older generations would like to do so.By scanning a QR code and paying their share via social networking tool WeChat and e-commerce app Alipay on their smartphones in one easy click, urban Chinese are finding it easier to save them the embarrassment of figuring out each person’s payment when they order a meal.“This function has made going Dutch less trouble and more fun in China”, CNN noted.“Because of their convenience, many of us are never without our phones. And person-to-person mobile payment services are incredibly easy to use and save the trouble of dealing with change,” said an 18-year-old student in China.“You can also leave funny notes using emoji (表情符号) like a bowl of rice or a cup of tea to describe a meal that you have shared.”51. What is the passage mainly about?A.The Chinese tradition of dining out with friends.B.A new trend of splitting the bill in China.C.How social networking tools have influenced our daily lives.D.Why people in China argue over who pays the bill when dining out.52. Splitting the bill at formal meals was considered to be a(an) ________ task.A.hardB.easyC.excitingD.funny53. Many Chinese people make a taken effort to pay the bill because ________.A.they don’t want to be considered unsophisticatedB.they want praise and gratitude from their friendsC.they consider it an honor to host the meal and pay the billD.they find it hard to work out how much each person needs to pay54. The underlined phrase “going Dutch” (in Paragraph 4) probably means ________.A.figuring out the total paymentB.taking turns to pay the billC.fighting for the privilege of paying the billD.each person paying their own expenses55. According to the passage, which is NOT the advantage of using digital payment apps to split the bill?A.They’re easier to use and more interesting.B.They save the trouble of dealing with change.C.They make it easier to figure out how much money each person has to pay.D.They make people less embarrassed to split the bill.IV. 阅读表达A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things have been so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and she wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that just as one problem was solved another arose. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen, filled three pots with water and placed the fire on a high fire. Soon the three pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the other he placed eggs, and the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word. The daughter impatiently wondered what he was trying to do. In half an hour he walked over to the stove and turned down the fire. He pulled the carrots out and placed them in the bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in the bowl. Then he ladled (盛) the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her, he asked, “Darling what do you see?” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee, ”she replied. He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma (芳香). Humbly, she asked, “What does it mean, Father?”He explained, “Each of them faced the same adversity, however each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard. But after going through boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg was fragile. A thin outer shell protected a liquid center. But after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The coffee beans are unique however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.”“Which are you, ”he asked his daughter, “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?”56. Specifically, they showed that average donations to one nonprofit organization dropped by around10percent in the workweek after the time switch compared with four weeks before and after the change. In some states that do not observe Daylight Savings Time, donations remained unchanged. With over half of the people living in parts of the developed world reporting that they rarely get enough sleep during the workweek, the finding has implications beyond the week we spring forward, the researchers say."Lack of sleep shapes the social experiences we have and the kinds of societies we live in,"says neuroscientist Ben Simon of the University of Califomia,Berkeley To test the link between sleep loss and generosity,Ben Simon and her team first brought23 young adults into the lab for two nights. The participants slept through one night and stayed awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed a standardized questionnaire rating their likelihood of helping strangers in various situations. For instance, whether they would give up their seat on a bus to a stranger or offer a ride to a coworker in need.About80percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived than when rested. The researchers then observed participant'brain activity in a functional MRI machine. comparing each participant's neural activity in a rested versus sleep-deprived state. That showed that sleep deprivation reduced activity in a network of brain regions linked to the ability to empathize with others. There's always a possibility that some other variable besides sleep is causing this decline in generosity, says behavioral economist David Dickinson. But this experiment enabled the researchers to draw a convincing line from changes to the brain that appear during sleep loss to real-world behavior.Chronic sleep loss in the modem world is a serious problem,Ben Simon says. But unlike many other large-scale problems-think climate change or political polarization(极化)-this one has a ready solution.”If you think about promoting sleep and letting people get the sleep they need, what an impact that could have on the societies we live in."32.The experiment focused on whether sleep loss can make peopleA.less generousB.lonelyC.moodyD.uncommunicative33.What did Ben Simon think of the finding?A.It provides a ready cure for sleep lossB.It brings about long-term effects on society.C.It is well received among developed world.D.It is not convincing because of some variables.34.What can we learn about the experiment from paragraph4?A.It adopted diverse methods during the test.B.It aimed to improve people's act of generosity.C.It analyzed different kinds of experiment resultD.It involved different participants in the two stages35.What is the passage mainly about?A.Ready solution to solve sleep lossB.More people tending to suffer sleep loss.C.The standard method of testing generosity.D.Sleep loss making people less generous.第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。

Outside, 2000 sheep are standing in the fields. Most of them will give birth to lambs in the following weeks. Inside, their shepherds are sitting in the warm watching TV.You might think that the shepherds are neglecting their duty by resting in comfort. However, if you look at the television more closely, you would see that the shepherds are protecting the sheep. It is part of an experiment to try to increase the survival rate of new lambs. In the past, the shepherds stayed out with their sheep, walking round and helping the mother sheep to give birth. In this experiment, television cameras are used to scan the sheep, and the shepherds are looking at a television monitor which is automatically controlled. The system has several advantages. Shepherds do not have to walk among the sheep, which tends to disturb the mother sheep that are about to give birth. Instead, they can stay inside, watching by remote control. If there is no problem, they stay away from the sheep. But when they are needed they can quickly go out to help, or to scare away foxes. The experiment is popular with shepherds because it means that they do not have to spend all their time outdoors waiting for the lambs to arrive in freezing weather. The monitoring system is rented for the few months when the lambs are born. The cost is high, but the farm manager estimates that, since lambs are so valuable, and if about ten more lambs are saved than in a usual ear, the experiment will be financially worthwhile. At the same time, the experiment may show that it is possible to make a saving in manpower, especially whena large number of sheep are involved.21. The main purpose of using a television monitor to watch the sheep is _________.A. to kill more animals such as foxesB. to increase the survival rate of lambsC. to reduce the number of shepherds required on a farmD. to improve the working condition for the shepherds22. The shepherds like to use the remote control system because ________.A. their sheep will not be attacked by wild animalsB. they would like to watch TV 24 hours a dayC. they can greatly improve their working conditionD. they can work less time with the help of the system25. The passage is mainly about _______.A. the improvement of television camerasB. the life of shepherds on a farmC. the use of monitor system for shepherdsD. the decrease of the survival rate of lambsPassage Two: Decide whether each of the following statements is True or False according to the text.I remember I was in America. For most people, the holiday season is a time of joy and family reunion. For me, it is a time of mixed emotions – for I have been away from my family and friends in Iran while studying in the United States. Rather than lock myself in my loneliness, I have tried each Christmas to learn a little more about the culture of the country and know more about my American friends.A tie-clasp (领带夹) I still wear reminds me repeatedly of the Christmas of 1989, which was quite memorable. All my classmates had eagerly looked forward to the holiday time. I had no vacation because I was short of money. My check from home had not arrived on schedule because of the crush (积压) of holiday mail. One day I walked to the campus to pick up my mail at the International Students Office. But the all important check still had not arrived. Maria, a Mexican-American student, who worked as temporary secretary in the department when others left for their holidays must have seen me as I left the mailbox with disappointment showing on my face. She invited me to spend Christmas Eve with her family. I accepted all too gladly.Maria’s family was not rich. They lived in a modest small house. Maria introduced me to her parents, her aunt and her sister, who welcomed me warmly. Maria’s father could only speak Spanish, so he talked to me while Maria’s sister acted as an interpreter. The kind look in his eyes and his relaxed behavior made me feel right at home. The dinner was very elaborate (精致的) Each dish had a special feature, sauce and a blend of seasonings (调味品). Maria’s aunt ate while standing at a corner of the small, old table. I felt a little uncomfortable, knowing that I was occupying her place, but her gesture expressed the sincere hospitality with which Maria’s whole family received me. After dinner, Maria chose a small package from under the Christmas tree and handed it to me. Inside I found the tie-clasp I still use to this day.Looking at the tie-clasp, I know I would always regard it as a memento of an unforgettable evening of friendship during a hard and lonely period of my life.26.
