The auditorium buzzed with a palpable energy as the orchestra tuned their instruments. Lily, a young violinist, stood backstage, her heart pounding in anticipation. This was her debut performance, and she was both nervous and excited. As the conductor raised his baton, the room fell silent. The first note sheplayed resonated through the hall, and as the music swelled, so did her confidence. When the final crescendo peaked and the music faded, the audience eruptedinto applause. Lily beamed, her eyes sparkling with joy and pride. This was the moment she had dreamed of, and it was everything she had hoped for and more.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁),He believed he was practically an adult.I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.“You don't trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away.I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head.I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball.“Hi, Meatball," I said, bringing her into my arms.I walked back in, touching her neck gently.Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.“Why won't she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go.He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.Meatball became a regular. One night, temperatures were unusually low.Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again.I patted her head, “I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good.”“Mom's not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat.“She's just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.”We both laughed at his joke. The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball.I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.【注意】1.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.I chose Paul Revere’s horse as m y subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

Here goes nothing! In the previous reading section of the exam paper, we read a story about a group of students who went on a school trip to a magical forest. They met all kinds of interesting creatures and had a lot of fun exploring the hidden wonders of the forest. But suddenly, a thick fog descended upon the forest, separating the students from their teachers. As the fog thickened, the students realized they were lost and needed to find a way out of the forest. They banded together and used their skills and knowledge to navigate through the dense fog. With their combined efforts, they were able to find a path leading out of the forest.Once they emerged from the fog, they found themselves in a beautiful meadow bathed in sunlight. The students were relieved to be out of the fog and back in familiar surroundings. They thanked each other for their teamwork and cooperation in getting out of the forest safely. As they made their way back to the school bus, the students reflected on their adventure in the magical forest. They realized that sometimes, in the face of challenges, it is important to work together and use their strengths to overcome obstacles. They returned to school feeling proud of their accomplishment and ready to face whatever challenges came their way.And that's the end of my continuation for the 2023 English New College Entrance Examination paper. My heart beat wildly as I stared at my phone screen. I re-read the message from my friend Jane. Someone had upset her by sharing her personal news: she had been refused by her dream school. Jane had shared the sad news with only a few people. She didn’t know who let the word out, but she was really hurt and disappointed.I felt so bad. I knew how the news had gotten out because I had been the one to tell someone beyond her closest friends. Honestly, I hadn’t realized she meant to keep it so close to only a few in the first place, but at the same time I’d known it wasn’t a good idea when I started to tell it to someone else.Did she really not know it was me? It would have been easy to admit what I had done and apologize if her message put the blame, specifically, on me. But it read as though it had been copied and sent to several people. Once again ignoring the right choice, I chose the coward’s (懦夫) way out instead.“I’m so sorry for what happened to you,” I typed. “How awful that your confidence was broken!”I hoped that would work. Her reply came back within seconds: “Thank you.”“It would be okay for me to remain anonymous (匿名), wouldn’t’t it?”I thought to myself. But, deep down, I knew I’d been the one to break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, not only of my original action, but also because I’d taken a further step in the wrong direction by covering it up.I felt painful at church on Sunday, sitting in silence all the time. Later, the speaker asked us to examine ourselves and see if anything stood in the way of holding on to our faith.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school activities. From age 14, I was babysitting and ironing his shirts. He was a truck driver, and when he was home, he did his own cooking and cleaning. One day when I was in high school, I complained to my dad that my life was dull. "I don't have any friends at school. People think I'm strange because I don't go out with them." Dad paused, looked at me, and then said, "You know, I'm here for you. You can always talk to me." I looked at him in disbelief. He was a truck driver. How could he understand my feelings?A few weeks later, Dad came home from a long trip. He had a large boxin his hand. "Here, this is for you," he said. I opened the box. Inside was a second hand typewriter. "I thought this might help you write your stories. You know, you are always writing in your notebooks. I thought you mightwant to type them out." I was astonished. "Thanks, Dad," I said. I wasstill not sure how a typewriter was going to change my life. But it did. I started writing short stories on it. I sent them to magazines. When I was a senior in high school, I had a part time job at a local newspaper. I used the typewriter to write my articles. I worked hard and was promoted to editor. I became a journalist after college. Dad's gift had turned my dull life into an exciting one.Paragraph 1:The typewriter not only changed my career but also strengthened thebond between Dad and me. I began to see my truck driving dad in a new light. Every time I sat in front of that typewriter, I felt his love and support.I started sharing more of my school and work experiences with him. He wouldlisten attentively, his eyes full of pride. Once, I told him about a difficult article I had to write for the newspaper. He patted my shoulder and said, "You can do it, kid. Just like how you've been writing all those stories on the typewriter." His simple words were like a warm breeze on a cold day, giving me the confidence I needed.Paragraph 2:As I grew older, I realized that the typewriter was more than just a tool for writing. It was a symbol of my dad's unwavering belief in me. I decided to keep the typewriter even though it was old fashioned and I could afford the latest laptops. It sat in my study, a reminder of my dad's love. Whenever I faced challenges in my journalism career, I would look at it and remember my dad's gift. Years later, when Dad passed away, I held the typewriter close to my heart. It was a precious heirloom that held all the memories of my dad's love and our special connection. I knew that this simple gift had made all the difference in my life.。
Learn to accept my baby sister Rosa题目In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for any of you.” Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).“I remember having to creep(蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know.” She pulled me in for a side hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning(授子) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

In a small town called Meadowville, there was a beloved playground that had brought joy to generations of children. 11-year-old Emma and her best friends, Alice and Leo, were among those who idled away their after-school time and weekends there all year round. It was a place where imaginations soared, friendships blossomed, and laughter echoed through the air.One afternoon, rushin g out the school gate, Emma shouted, “Let's go down to the playground!" The three of them got there soon, but it was locked up. The fence was broken and the swings had tape around them.Shocked, they stared into each other's eyes, not knowing why. A man approached them, explaining that it was unsafe and the council had decided to shut it down."Will they fix it?” asked Alice.“No, it will cost a lot, at least ten thousand dollars.” the man shook his head, walking away.Leo looked desperate, gazing at the playground and then hanging his head, as if bidding farewell. “We need to get some help!" Emma dragged Alice towards her home.On stepping into the house, Emma exclaimed, “Dad! We need ten thousand dollars...” Her dad, who was drinking coffee, turned his head around, “What?” Alice then revealed the truth. Hearing this heart-breaking news, Emma's parents were more than surprised, for their childhood was closely connected with that playground as well, They spread the news to other families, and parents sat down to brainstorm ideas.Instead of providing the money, they suggested the children take matters into their own hands while parents offered assistance.

Teaching Procedures
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event! I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.” I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well — he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward. David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

• The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
答案
答案
• Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Coated with brown curly hair, it looked everywhere, eyes sparkling with curiosity and a little uneasiness. When Poppy approached, it backed a bit. Dad knelt down, gently stroking its curly hair and comforting, “No worry, you will get used to the new family.” His magical words seemed to lessen its anxiety. Meanwhile, Poppy’s eyes were full of eagerness and excitement. Early next morning, the noise of dogs wakened them. Mom threw on clothes and rushed out. “You guess what?” She screamed, “They are playing so happily”. Since then, the quiet house was filled with fun again and the parents finally burst out a sign of relief.
•“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪) get the better of him.
答案
• A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. For several weeks he had been picturing Poppy’s lonely and miserable life and exhilarated eyes upon seeing him. Entering the house, however, he was surprised to find playing so cheerfully on the floor were just his Poppy and another dog, completely absorbed in their happy world. Then he felt a gentle pat on his shoulder. It was mom with a smile, “Amazing they get along so well and the once energetic Poppy came back again.” Instantly, moments of loneliness in the university flashed across his mind. “I should also learn to get along with others and adapt to new environment, just like them,” he murmured.
•Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. •A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university.
•His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
• The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
•“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.
•It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.
• They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”

•
(Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. A few weeks later,the boy arrived home from university.),这个故事中有两个主要的角色: Poppy和the boy。
