1.What are the differences between formal language and informal language andwhat is the best way for a nonnative speaker of English to learn the difference? (opening ceremony)A Hello!B Hello!Where do you come from?I’m from China as an exchange student.Oh! China is a beautiful country. I love there. You can come to me for help if you are in trouble here. Thanks! Actually, I have some trouble in how to use formal and informal language. Can you give me some advice?Sure, all languages have two broad, general categories, or levels of usage: a formal level and informal language. English is in no exception. So, let’s talk about the differences between them.Okay, the first difference in these two levels is the situation in which you use a particular level. Formal language is the kind of language you find in textbooks, reference books such as encyclopedias, and in business letters. For example, a letter to a university would be in a formal style. You would also use formal English in compositions and essays that you write in school. We also tend to use formal language in conversations with persons we don’t know well or with people we have a formal relationship with, such as professors, bosses, doctors, friends of our parents’, strangers, etc.And I know that Informal language is used in conversation with colleagues, family, and friends, and when we write personal notes or letters to close friends, as well as in diaries, etc.In addition, formal language tends to be more polite. Another difference between formal and informal language is the vocabulary. For example, If I’m talking to my friend or colleague I might say “I’m just crazy about soccer!” But if I were talking to my professor or a friend of my parents’, I would probably say “ I really enjoy soccer” or “I like soccer very much.”I can’t agree anymore! But for me as nonnative speakers what’s the best way to learn the difference? In my opinion, observing the different ways English speakers speak or write in different situations may be the best way. Your professors and colleagues might use formal language. However, your classmates, teammates, family members, and friends will generally speak in an informal fashion. The difference can be learned over time by observing and interacting with native speakers. That sounds like a good idea! I’m quite confident that I can have great progress by the way you introduced. It’s so nice to talk with you today! Thank you very much! You ‘re welcome!2. The Internet is transforming the way we live and work. How far do you think our social lives are influenced by it? Give specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. A: Since the rapid development of Internet, our social lives are influenced by it very much. Because of its high efficiency, convenience, and entertaining, the Internet have a huge impact on our lives.B: That’s true. For example, we can know what happened at the other side of the ocean immediately. Every one has the right to declare himself on the forum. All of us join in the international (所有人都参与到国际事务中) In other word, the Internet has reinforced the trend of globalization.A: Yes, through the internet, we can immediately know what happened in the world.B: As we all know, young people especially celebrities are crazy about using blog to show their feeling, their daily life.(举例lady gaga 的facebook 一天有多少人看) For young people at our age, we can get closer with our idol by Facebook, twitter.A: We can keep in touch with the relatives and friends far away by it. For example, my parents like to have a online chat with me, which is so convenient.B: Surf the Internet and find some information is very convenient. I don’t need to go to the library, take a book out of the bookshelf, write the information down in my notebook and put it back. In additi on, we can pay for utility bill and shopping online. We don’t need to go to a certain place to do pay bills.A: Many multinational companies do online trade in order to reduce the time and money spent on the transportation.B: Have you heard that some outstanding professor usually do distance teaching when he or she receives many invitations from different college in the same day?A: Of course.B: As we can see, the Internet makes our lives more convenient and we can spend less time doing same thing.A: In my opinion, for most people, we can not live without the Internet.B: But remember that every coin has its two sides. There are some disadvantages. Compare to the traditional face-to-face communication settings, the Internet shorten the distance betweenthe people but deepen the gap between family members.A: What do you mean?B: For instance, children usually lock the door and fall into the virtual world once they back to home from school. In my own word, the Internet just likes dessert. It tests good and we usually can not stop eatting them, but it is not good for our health. Worst, many students are absorbed in the virtual world so much that they neglect their studying.A: Um…. Besides, Internet Security has become the hottest topic recently. Our personal information, some business or political secrets can be exposed easily by hackers. The governments should draft relevant laws to prevent the crime. For example,Foreign Ministry spokesman of China said that China forbid hacker attack of all kinds. And American government has enforced a law to punish hackers.B: Yeah, we should use the Internet correctly, properly. In conclusion, the Internet influences our social lives very much.Hello, Ma Jiachao , as we all know the Internet has changed our world a lot. Let’s talk about the influence of it together today.Okay. Nowdays, the internet is being used almost everywhere. I now want to emphasize the impact on daily life. Firstly, we can get information through the Internet easily and quickly. For example, when you want to know some specific information about a piece of news, you can turn to the Internet, and it won’t let you down! And It occurred to me that the effect on communication will be improved. Our mobile phone can be used instead of a laptop. We can not only use it to have a visual call but also deal with our files. Surfing the Internet will be done without connection to wires.I can’t agree with you anymore! What’s more, The GPS (Global Position System) brings us another benefit. When you are on holiday, wherever you are, you can find your position and a map of that area on your mobile or your car. Possibly you can get more traveling information which is sent by the local station.Wow, that’s so cool! You see that the Internet has changed our social lives in such a degree. We should take the best of the internet!Yes, and I am so glad to talk with you today. So am i!3. Have you ever been to a circus? What were some of the animals you saw there? Is it ethical to use animals in circuses for entertainment?A Hey! Have you ever been to a circus?B Yes, I have. When I was a child, I often went to the circus in the zoo with my parents. I can see mainly tigers, dolphins, turtle, and lions there. So what do you think of this behavior?Well, I don’t think it’s ethical to use animals in circuses for entertainment. Why?First of all, the training for those animals in the circus can be quite cruel. When the animals can’t behave very well, people will slash those animals. Secondly, the human ar en’t the leader of the nature, so we should respect animals, and regard them on the same level. We should think about what the animals feel. Finally, some kinds of animals performing in the circus are in danger, we should protect them instead of using them as a tool of earning money or abusing them.I can’t agree with you anymore. So we should make contributions to the protection of these animals, right?Yes, but what can we do?We can reduce the times of going to the circus, and persuade people not to go to the circus. In order to reach the goal, we need to launch an activity aimed at protecting animals and hand out some educational papers in the street to persuade people out of going to circuses. You’ve got the point! What’s more, we can give advices to the leaders of the circus. And talk to the administers. That’s a good idea! Let’s do it together tomorrow.Ok, go ahead!4. With more and more people away from their parents for education and work, the recent years have witnessed a substantial increase in the number of “empty nesters”. When you graduate, where would you choose to live or work, the place where your parents are or somewhere away from them?Hello, where are you from?I am from Beijing, and you?I am from Shandong. Are you missing your parents at home?Yes, of course!Me too, so when you graduate will you live and work in the place where you parents are?Yes, I think I will choose to live near them. Why?Because there are more and more people away from their parents for education and work, the recent years have witnessed a substantial increase in the number of “empty nesters”, the old people in the home are quite lonely, and the elderly often can’t get treated well in the home for the aged.In my opinion, I will choose to live somewhere away from them. As we all know, there are more job opportunities in big cities like Beijing and shanghai, what’s more, there are more activities for entertainment there, such as concerts. I think I will enjoy the life in bigger city. And I can take my parents to the place I live when I earn enough money in the future. In addition, my parents themselves also want me to live in big cities for a better development. In conclusion, no matter what choice you will choose, don’t regret it. Go ahead, a nd create the life belongs to yourself, right?Yes, I can’t agree with you anymore! I ‘m very happy talking with you today!Me too.5. In China, one’s educational level and competitiveness are decided by his or her ability to pass various examinations. As a college student, what do you study for, the ability to pass exams, or the ability to learn?Hello, the final exams are coming, every student is preparing for it. But do you think we college students study just to pass exams? No, I don’t think so. Exam is just a way to test yourself. We should set goals for ourselves, to become the men of tremendous promise. In my opinion, we study for the ability to learn.I think so, there are much knowledge we need to learn, which we can’t handle in a short time. But if we cover the ability to learn, we can learn the new things more easily.I can’t agree any more. What’ more, through the process of gaining the ability to learn, we improve our qualities without sense, and become more quick-witted.So, we sh ouldn’t regard the exams as the final goal of study, we should have a long-term sight.Yes, but in china the main way to evaluate a student is examing, so some students are pushed to study the strategies by which you can easily pass the exams. Some students even lose the interest of studying.Yeah, that’s really sad to hear that. But our country is trying to change the situation now, we should have a faith in the bright future for the young generation. And we should behave as models for them, by studying hard, and study for the ability to learn.I’m happy to talk with you today!Me too.6.Every year, many students in China go abroad, believing that overseas study will be very rewarding. But some people are against studying abroad. What’s your opinion?A: I am for studying abroad. In my opinion, studying abroad is a chance to gain more experience and knowledge. What about you?B: I am against studying abroad. I addmitted that studying abroad is a chance to gain more experience and knowledge. But since the speed development of China while most of the Western countries are suffered from the financial crisis and experience the recession, staying in China may be better.A: Well, although the financial crisis has revealed a lot of problems , there are still a lot of advantage we should learn. For example, food security has become a hot topic in China since Sanlu Incident broke out. But why these kind incidents didn’t happen in other countries? Obviously, their supervision mechanisms are more comprehensive and rigorous. Improving various management mechanism is the responsibility of next generation.B: Failure is the mother of success. Accumulate experience and learn from mistakes are theA: What’s more, studying abroad is a n opportunity for global training and experience outside China. And studying abroad also provides working chance which offer higher status and better salary than domestic companies.B:I don’t quite agree with you. The best immediate and long-term career development are likely to be found in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies-that is, right at home. And you know?We shouldn’t encourage students to go abroad. First, the high cost may not be afforded by every student.Second, many Chinese talents stay abroad after graduated from college, which may cause Chinese brain drain.A: So you think many Chinese talents will stay abroad and work for multinational corporations? Now let me ask you a question. If the academic and working condition in China are better than other countries, why do they prefer to stay abroad? I have some friends who study abroad. I found that they prefer to study abroad for the open academic atmosphere. They can discuss freely, even debate with their teachers about their questions.B: Since the combination between Chinese and Western college is getting tighter, the academic atmosphere in China is also more inclusive in the past decade. As a result, students stay in China can also experience the open academic atmosphere. Besides, there are more foreign students come to China and study. Chinese traditional culture is very diversified, which is very attractive for them. It follows that studying abroad will also be a great experience. So why our Chinese students eager to study abroad so much. I have to say directl y that many Chinese students studying abroad don’t know their own cultural at all but they are eager to learn foreign culture. I don’t mean that foreign cultural isn’t worth learning. And since the Internet reinforce the trend of globalization, we can search the Internet and learn from foreign countries easily. We can do distance learning by the Internet. So studying abroad isn’t so necessary.7.In this increasingly internationalized world, festivals and traditions also becomeuniversal. More often than not, you can see western festivals like Christmas being celebrated in China. What’s your thought on it?B: Well, Christmas is the most important festival in western countries. It is not just a holiday when people go shopping and send gifts crazily, eat big meal, and decorate a Christmas tree. Christmas is an annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ celebrated generally on December 25 as a religious and cultural holiday. But most of the Chinese just celebrate it for fun. In my opinion, not only Chinese but also billions of people around the world should know the meaning first before they celebrate it.A: I can totally understand your feeling, but I have different opinion on Chinese celebrating Christmas. As a member of global village, we should respect their culture. Not knowing the meaning behind the holiday doesn’t mean we don’t respect them. Since this is a internationalized world, holiday also become a treasure of people all over the world. So we can also celebrate it with t hem. Don’t you think billions of people celebrate Christmas is another way of cultural of diffusion?B: What do you mean?A: Actually, not all of the Chinese don’t know the meaning beh ind it, just like you.B: I admitted that. Not only Christmas but also other holiday, such as Halloween, Thanksgiving are celebrated people around the world. And Chinese traditional festivals are also celebrated by foreigns now. There are many festivities in New York, San Francisco and LA on the Spring Festival. Although there are usually hold in China town, many foreigners celebrate it with the local Chinese. They know more about our culture by the Spring Festival. Festival and traditions are really the symbol of culture. They are people’s treasure which we should not only res pect but also inherit.A: So celebrating the holiday from other countries is a trend of globalization, including celebrating Christmas.8.What do you think is the worst (man-made or natural) disaster? How could weprepare ourselves for it?9.There is a growing concern over cloning in modern society. Are you for or againstit? State your reasons.A: Against: Cloning is a radical challenge to the most fundamental laws of biology, so it's reasonable to be concerned that it might threaten human society and dignity. While human cloning might not offer great benefits to humanity, no one has yet made a convincing case that it would do any real harm, either.Conservative spiritual leaders have claimed that cloning a human constitutes a gross attack on human dignity. That would surely be true if a cloned individual were treated as a lesser being, with fewer rights or lower status.B: But why suppose that the laws that protect our rights and dignity would not be applicable to cloned persons?A:A leading lawyer has suggested that cloning would violate the "right to a unique genetic identity".B: Where did he come up with such a right?A: It makes perfect sense to say that adult persons have a right not to be cloned without their voluntary , informed consent .B: But if such consent were given, whose "right" to genetic identity would be violated?A: Many of the vivid warnings of science fiction concerning the prospect of human cloning turn out, upon reflection , to be wildlyB: There's the fear, for instance, that parents might clone a child for the sake of having " surplus parts" in case the original child needs an organ transplant.A: But parents of identical twins don't view one child as an organ farm for the other. Why should cloned children's parents be any different?B: Another disturbing thought is that cloning will lead to efforts to breed individuals with genetic qualities perceived as desirable (math geniuses, soccer players, etc.).Such ideas are offensive, not only because of an unthinking disgust, but also because of the horrors carried out by the Nazis in the name of improving their race. But there's a vast difference between the breeding programs as practiced by some groups (where the urge to breed certain types of people leads to efforts to destroy other types) and the much more harmless forms already practiced in democratic societies (where, say, lawyers freely choose to have sexual relations with other lawyers).Banks stocked with the frozen sperm of geniuses already exist, but they haven't created a master race because few women are queuing up to get pregnant this way.A: Why should we think it would be different if human cloning becomes available?A: So who will likely take advantage of cloning?B: Perhaps a couple whose child is dying. This might seem psychologically suspect, but a cloned child born to such suspect parents stands no greater or lesser chance of being loved, or rejected, than a child created the normal way.Infertile couples are also likely to seek out cloning. That such couples have other options ( artificially bringing egg and sperm together, or adopting a child) is not an argument for denying them the right to clone.Or consider an example raised by Judge Richard Posner: a couple in which the husband has some unfortunate genetic defect .Currently, if this couple wants a genetically related child, they have four not altogether pleasant options. They can reproduce naturally and resign themselves to the risk of passing on the disease to the child. They can go to a sperm bank and take a chance on unknown genes. They can bring egg and sperm together artificially and dispose of any affected baby before placing it in the mother, or before birth—though that might be objectionable, too.Or, they can get a male relative of the father to be a sperm donor, if such a relative exists. This is one case where even people bothered by creating a child under the lens of a microscope might not see cloning as the worst option.A: Even if human cloning offers no obvious benefits to mankind, why ban it?In a democracy we don't usually pass laws against something before there is actual or probable evidence of harm. Before we go any further, it might make sense to require a temporary pause on research into human cloning in order to make a systematic enquiry into the grave questions it raises. When research into cloning is resumed , human cloning should remain a research activity for an extended period. And if it is ever attempted, it should—and no doubt will—take place only under careful examination and layers of legal administration .Most important, human cloning should be governed by the same laws that now protect human rights.A world that is not safe for cloned humans would be a world that is not safe for the rest of us.10.Would you sign a premarital agreement with your future husband or wife? Whyor why not? Give examples or reasons to support your opinion.A: Yes, I will. Because divorce rate is getting higher and financial dispute is usually the critical problem, to sign a premarital agreement can avoid getting trouble in the process of divorce.B: Why are you so pessimistic about your future marriage? Why don’t you think you and your future husband will be the prince and princess in the fairy tales , living happily? For me, to sign a prenuptial agreement is unnecessary. It may take the romance out of the marriage.A: Yeah, I know. But as a precaution. For example, recently the Hong Kong property billionaire’s son has to hand over 1.2 billion Hong Kong dollars to his ex-wife, because he dismissed his father advise of signing a prenuptial agreement in 2000. It must be an action Samathur Li most regret. B: Well, maybe I should think deeply about it after knowing the news. Oh! You are right! Signing a prenup will be necessary for nowaday couples. I have read a news that Americans are taking a cautious approach to marriage and are seeking more prenuptial agreements before walking down the aisle. It said that it is not just the wealthy and famous who are looking to safeguard their assets when a marriage crumbles. More middle-class couples are opting for prenups, which can also include adultery clauses, protection of retirement benefits and even custody of the dog, accroding to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawers.A: There is a odd phenomenon occuring worldwide. Many couples get married because of money, car and house. Have you ever seen a TV program named “Fei Cheng Wu Rao”?B: Of course. Many single men and women go to that program and want to find their Mrs. Right or Mr. Right. However, the most important standard is usually having a car and a house.A: That’s right. Many couples’ marriage are based on material instead of the emotion, their love. As a result, divorce rate has become higher and higher, and signing a prenup in oreder to avoid some financial problem is necessary.B: Yeah. It is a planning tool. Given that half of marriages end in divorce it makes sense to plan. It is reported an increase in prenups in the last five years, more than half said more women are seeking the legal agreements. More women are working now than in previous decades and they are earning higher salaries. In our historically male-dominated culture women didn't control money and now they need to plan as much as the men. More women have more assets these days and have more control over funds.B: In addition, a prenup can save a couple from a terrible marriage. A couple should make sure how much each of them should pay for the housing loan. Besides, a couple can make an agreement on some problems, such as parents supporting, whether to live with their parents after getting married. Having a baby or not usually cause quarrel between a newly-married couple. So making an agreement on whether having a baby or not has a positive affect on a happy marriage. What’s more, who should teach the child or children is also improtent. For instance, my parents had made a parol agreement before I born. So even if my father thinks my mom is too strict with me sometimes, he has never speak for me. Because it is clear that the power of teaching is mastered by my mother in the agreement. So far, they have never argue about this topic.A: And just like what you said at the beginning, signing a prenup may take the romance out of the prenup. But If the couple live happily and never think about divorce such a awful word, how can it have a negative affect on the happy marriage? On the other hand, you can regard the prenuptial agreement as a safeguard of the happy marriage in the future. If you really think it will take the romance out fo the marriage, you can sign it and then store it in the drawer and never look at it again.。

I think Qinshiwang's decision accelerate his dynasty's destruction.I have two reasons to support my opinion.Firstly, for building a great wall, he employed more than 100000 people and it took at least 10 years to complete it. People are very angry, because those employees don't receive any money.Secondly, for building the great wall, country spend a large of money, and lead to country financial problem. and once country have no money, he order many people must donate their all property, so a large amount of people were dead because they have no money to buy some foods.B:I agree with you, but after all Qinshiwang built the great wall. 练习:I love reading novels, especially those classics. My favorite writer is Jane Austen, the one who wrote pride and prejudice. When BBC screened its latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel pride and prejudice, it was watched by a record 18 million British viewers. The series was then sold to 18 countries round the world, from America to Australia, from Iceland to Israel, there are Jane Austen fans in all corners of the globe, and even special Jane Austen discussion groups on the internet.Jane Austen never once traveled aboard in her life time and she hardly ever left the south of England. When she died a spinster in 1817, only four of her six novels had been published, all anonymous and she eared a grand total of 648.65 pounds from her books. Now, nearly 200 years later, sales of her novels rival modern bestsellers, reaching35,000 a week. There have been film and television productions of not only pride and prejudice, but also Emma, Persuasion, and the Oscar-winning Sense and Sensibility. Her house in Chawton in Hampshire is visited by 200 people a day.She wad born in 1775, the seventh of eight children. Her father was the reverend George Austen. They were not well off, and lived in a village. By the time when she was 12, Jane was writing stories about heroines imprisoned in haunted castles, being rescued by glamorous heroes. In Jane’s own life there were three romantic attachments. The first was a handsome Irish law student called Tom Lefroy, who she met in 1795, but who had to return to Ireland a year later. The second, in 1801, was a young man called Samuel Blackall who she fell in love with when on holiday in Devon, but who tragically died suddenly soon after. The third was a large young man called Harries whose proposal she briefly accepted in 1802, “but he had nothing to recommend him but his size,”so she changed her mind.In 1801 the family moved to Bath, where she was very unhappy. To make matters worse, in 1805 her father died, leaving his widow, Jane and her only sister Cassandra, also unmarried, even poorer than before. For four years they had to move from house to house, often staying with relatives. Finally in 1809 her brother Edward allowed them to live in a house on his estate in Chawton, only a few miles from Steventon where she had grown up. Here she was much happier, despite being the poor relation, dependent on charity. She not only revised her earlier novel but was able to write new ones, using her experiences to satirize and make fun of the social inequalities she saw around her. At last in 1811, Sense and Sensibility was the first of her novels to be published.

“ Excuse me, but I have tointerrupt.”;如果你的同伴比较沉默,你也不要自顾自地说下去,你可以用某些特定的语句启发同伴开口,如“This is my point of view,what do you think?” “Do you agree with me.”(三)Part CPart C同样是两名考生之间的对话,与Part B所不同的是,第三部分要求考生就某一个话题展开深入讨论,难度要高一些三、非知识性的指导和建议(一)推荐备考方法1.

The circumstances surrounding the birth of a female infant in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on Jan.29, 1954,were not promising present was the usual mix that had so often accumulated into a burden too heavy for a single-parent household like the one Oprah Winfrey grew up in. The state in which she was born had laws in place waiting to characterize her as unwelcome, to bar her participation in otherwise accebtable social activities, to shackle her to the residue of slavery and other injustices of the past. The simple truth is that her grandmother, her great-grandmother and all thegreat-great-grandmothers before them never experienced one day of life free from the harsh decrees of state-sponsored racial repression. In hindsight, it appears that her birth was an uneventful one. But at age three she was reciting speeches from church pulpits. Upon discovering books, the child delved into the written word, turning out weekly book reports for her father. Even during turbulent times, not a moment was wasted. Seeds were being planted, watered, and nurtured. On April 13, 1964, nearly an adolescent and watching television from the linoleum floor of her mother’s walk-up flat in something deep inside of her. She was watching the live broadcast of the Academy Awards ceremony and saw a young African-American actor receiving the film industry’s highest honor. Sharing in that moment and all it implied she later told me, caused her to say softly to herself, “If he can do that, I wonder what I could do?”The ground had been set. The journey of Oprah Winfrey had begun. The babe, the child, the adolescent, the young woman-all their strengths were harnessed into a force of astonishing power that placed itself in the service of nature and the human family. That the world has changed in meaningful ways since 1954 is beyond question. Oprah and her activities were driving forces in many of those changes. Her enormously influential talk show, her philanthropic work with children in africa and elsewhere, her popular book club and magazine, her empowering spiritual message, her contribution (by action and example) to improving race relations-all speak to the human family, touching hearts and leaving each one uplifted.Mississippi too seems to be mellowing out into a more congenial place than it was in 1954. that may also be partly due to the very sbecial enerav that is Oprah Winfrey-a courageous, funny, compassionate, well-informed, dazzlingly curious person, as down-to-earth and loving as any human being I’ve ever known.

. Sofar as I am concerned. 。

What I mean is.。

. Well.。

.That is to say.。

. You know,。

1. And what shall I call you? Most people call me Xiao Huang.2. Where do you come from?a. I was born in Xi‘an, which is one of the major cities in China. It used to be the capital city at one point in China’s history.b. I come from Shanghai, but I was born in Xi‘an. My parents moved to Shanghai when I was just 4 years old, so I re ally don’t know much about Xi‘an, apart from occasional summer visits to see some good friends of the family. In fact,I don’t have any relatives at all living in Xi‘an.3. Where about is your hometown?Xi’an is located in Shanxi Province, which is in central China.4. Could you tell me something about your hometown?a. Hmm. 。

. well, the population is about 6 million. It‘s famous for its historic sites, especially for the Terracotta Warriors. Xi’an was named the capital of China several times over ma ny dynasties. Also,Xi‘an is the starting point of the famous Silk Road, which was important in ancient times. The weather is extremely hot in summer, about 40 degrees Centigrade, and fairly cold in the winter, about 14 degrees Centigrade below zero.b. Okay. Well, first of all,my hometown is “X”。

I was born in the city, but moved to the outskirts of the town when I was small. “X” is a fairly large city — a pretty important economic centre actually. It has a population of 3 million. It’s pretty flat, and is situated right near a large lake.5. What is the climate like in your hometown? It‘s generally very hot in summer, about 40 degrees Centigrade. In winter,it’s cold — about minus 14 degrees Centigrade. The spring and autumn are both mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 25 degrees Centigrade. Oh, and the summer time is extremely humid as well. There are four seasons. Winter is cold and snowy; spring is short and rainy; summer is hot and humid; and autumn is beautiful.6. Tell me about what‘s the biggest traditional festival in your country.Definitely the Spring Festival. I suppose it’s somewhat like Christmas in western countries. Spring Festival is the only time when all families gather together and stores and business are closed for several days.7. Can you describe one of the main festivals celebrated in your country?National Day, which is on October 1st, is a big holiday. We get three days off and there are a lot of fireworks displays. There are large flower pictures and other types of flowers decorating the city, and some of the larger cities hold parades.8. How long have you lived in Beijing?Almost 4 years now. I first came to Beijing in July 1996. It‘s kind of surprising that I’ve already lived here for 4 years. I wasn‘t pl anning to stay for a long time, but then I got a good job in a joint venture company.9. How do you compare the climate in Beijing with that in your hometown? It’s about the same, except that we get a lot more snow in my hometown than we get in Beijing. I suppose it has something to do with the geography of the two cities.10. Which city, in your opinion, is the best city in China?Beijing, because it‘s the capital of China and has a very rich culture. In addition, Beijing is more beautiful than many other cities, because it’s the showcase of China. A lot of money has been invested in Beijing and it is a very interesting place to visit.11. Has the transport changed over the past 20 years in China?Yes, very much indeed. We used to have very few bus lines years ago. Most people would use their bikes to get to places in the city. But now in big cities, there are more bus lines linking different places so it is a lot more convenient. Some cities also have subway lines so it makes traveling much faster than before. There are also more taxis in cities and more people are also using that as a mode of transportation.12. Let‘s talk a little about traveling and transport. For a long trip, how do you prefer to travel? In my country, if it is a long trip, I would prefer to take a train ride. Not only is train ride more economical, but also the time and route have shortened tremendously in the past few years. Air travel is more expensive and they are often beyond my budget. 13. Let’s talk about your hometown or vil lage. What kind of place is it?My hometown is in the outskirts of Beijing. Maybe one hour travel time to get to Beijing. Fairly close I would say. The people there are mostly farmers but many young people have gone to Beijing to work. I like the place because it is very quiet. Unlike the people in big cities who are more complicated, the people of the place where I come from are usually more down to earth.14. Why do you think trains are better than buses?Trains are better because they don‘t encounter any traffic, whereas sometimes in the bus, we get stuck in the traffic. Also, it is always difficult to get on the buses during the peak hour but with the train, you can bet that the chances of getting on are always greater during the peak hour.15. What kind of parent do you intend to be?I want to have a good relationship with my child. I have seen so many kids who don’t really know their own parents, and I don‘t want to end up like that. I do plan to be strict, but loving. I want my child to always feel comfortable to approach me,whether they’ve been good or bad. It‘s pretty easy to tell you what kind of parent I want to be, but when I actually become a parent,I’m sure I‘ll have to revise my ideals a bit.16. How different is your life from the lives of your parents? It‘s very different. I have had many more opportunities and a much more comfortable life than they had.I remember my father telling me stories about having just one egg to eat each week, and that was the highlight of his week. I can’t rea lly imagine life like that,so I‘m grateful that I have a better life than my parents did. I appreciate their hard work to get us to this point in our lives.17. Who does most of the shopping in your family?Well, I do most of the grocery shopping becaus e there’s a market very close to my work. It‘s very convenient for me to pick up milk or eggs or what ever on my way home from work. But, my wife also enjoys shopping very much. She usually does a lot of the clothes shopping for my son and me.18. Are you a good cook?a. Yes. I learned everything from my mother who was really famous in our hometown for her cooking. I suppose she learned how to cook from her mother as well. I think that’s how I won my husband‘s heart, by being such a good cook. He really appreciates good food, and I enjoy cooking for him.b. No. I’m a terrible cook. No one has ever taught me how to cook. I barely know how to boil an egg. Well, I do know how to make instant noodles, but it‘s just a matter of pouring boiling water on thema nd waiting for some time. I don’t like cooking either, but I do like eating. I suppose I‘ll have to marry someone who is a good cook.19. Do you have a lot of friends? It depends on what you mean by “a lot”。
