一、阅读理解(本题有20小题,每小题2分,共计40分)AAmerican and British government officials always say that the US and the UK have a "special relationship". However, Americans and Brits (英国人)usually look down on one another. Many Brits think Americans are stupid and like to fight. Many Americans think Brits are snobby and weak.A recent event shows this competitive spirit. Two weeks ago, British football star David Beckham hurt his left foot during a football game. The British poet laureate (桂冠诗人), Carol Ann Duffy, wrote a poem for him.The poem talked about the ancient Greek hero Achilles. According to Greek myth, Achilles' body could not be hurt , except for a small part of his heel . He was killed when an enemy shot an arrow(箭)into his heel. Beckham hurt a part of his heel named after the ancient hero--the Achilles tendon(健).When Duffy explained why she wrote the poem, she said, "Like Greek myth, public like Beckham having both success and tragedy. We all learn from them."The poet laureate is the official poet for the UK. The person holds a position of great honor in British society. Now that a poet laureate has devoted her time to writing a poem for a football player, some Americans say the tables have turned."There is no longer anybody who can argue that we are any less cultured than the Euros, "wrote Mason Lerner for the US website-the Faster Times. When Lerner traveled to England a few years ago, people told him that he spoke "American" rather than "English" (Some Brits think that Americans don't speak proper English). He was also told by more than several English-people that the US has no culture Now Lerner believes Americans will get the last laugh. "Once your poet laureate hasspent her time writing a poem about David Beckham, you pretty much lose the right to act snobby," he wrote.1. What do Americans think of BritsA. Nobody argues that the US is less cultured than the Euros.BDo you know why different animals or pests have their special colours ? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves. Some birds like cating locusts, but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locust change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are casily found and eaten by others. So they are to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They can not or other kinds of their enemies. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.6. From the passage we learn that locusts_A. are small animalsB. are easily found by birdsC. are dangerous to their enemiesD. change their colours to protect themselves7. The current assumption (假定)is that our basic needs for water-whether for drinking, agriculture, industry or the raising of fish will always have to be met. Given that premise (前提), there are two basic ways we can go: more equal access to water or better engineering solutions Looking at the engineering solution first, a lot of my research concentrates on what happens to wetlands when you build dams (坝)in river basins, particularly in Africa. The ecology (生态)of such areas is almost entirely driven by the seasonal changes of the river-the pulse of the water . And the fact is that if you build a dam, you generally spoil the downstream ecology . In the past, such problems have been hidden by a lack of information. But in the near future, governments. The engineers' ability to control water flows has created new kinds of unpredictability(不可预知) too. Dams in Africa have meant fewer fish, less grazing and less floodplain (洪泛区)agriculture - none of which were expected . And their average economic life is assumed to be thirty years. Dams don't exist forever, but what will replace them is not clear. The challenge for the future is to find new means of controlling water. Although GM technology(转基因技术)will allow us to breed better dry-land crops, there is no market for companies to develop crops suitable for the micro-climates of the Sahel and elsewhere in Africa Who is going to pay for research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World?11. What's the main idea of this passage?A. The challenge for new methods of developing crops.B. The basic means of controlling water in the Third world.C. The challenge for controlling water in Africa in the near future.D. The engineering solutions to water resource and their limitation.12. Which of the following statements is NOT true for meeting our basic needs for water?A. Water resource should be used more reasonably.B. More dams should be built in river basins.C. More wetlands should be protected from destruction.D. More dry-land crops could be developed in Africa.13. The author suggests that governments will have no excuse for their careless ignorance in the future because____.A. the ecological destruction will be known to the public by researchersB. the ecological destruction will no longer be a problem in the futureC. the future is an information ageD. governments will face greater challenge in the future14. The author mentions all the problems caused by dams EXCEPT________________A. fewer fishB. less grazing landC. less floodplain agricultureD. less farming land15. The last sentence probably impliesA. no one will invest in developing locally appropriate crops in AfricaB. researchers have no interest in developing dry-land cropsC. research on locally appropriate crops in the Third World may be profitableD. There is less water resource in the Third WorldDBeing able to multitask ---doing several things at the same time ---is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged fromeight to eighteen, we should think again. What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a large number of electronic devices (电子产品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own world, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.Multitasking also has an effect on young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks , many young people gave a positive response . However, the response from he worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again , as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.16. What does the underlined word "juggle" most probably mean?A. Want to buy.B. Use at the same time.C. Take the place of.D. Search information from.17. In paragraph 3, the author points out that ,A. family members do not greet each otherB. family members do not eat at the family tableC. young people get on well with their familiesD. young people hardly communicate with their family members18. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Young people must learn skills for future jobB. Young people benefit a lot from modern gadgets.C. Multitasking is an important skill to young people.D. Multitasking influences young people's development seriously.9. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. Young people think multitasking is good for their study and work.B. Employers consider it unnecessary for young people to be taught all over again.C. Educators feel that young people don't need to improve their study skills.D. People from the world of education believe multitasking has a good effect on children's later study skills.20.The author develops (阐述)the passage mainlyA. providing special examplesB. following the natural time orderC. giving out a cause and analyzing its effectsD. comparing opinions from different worlds二、语言运用第一节完形填空(本题有15小题,每小题1分,共计15分)One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting.

So they are to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They can not or other kinds of their enemies.

4.A(2分)
12.(1)A(2分)(2)B(2分)
