I am used to friendly opening exchange when doing business. Here in Chicago; things are different. There is no time for getting to know one another. This does not seem appropriate to me. There is no chance to develop a sense of trust when people meet to talk over issues. There are no rituals like tea or coffee before discussing business; though this is an convention in my country. When we discuss business it starts with an leisurely chat. I think that it is important for business partners to get familiar with each other first and to feel relaxed. If the exchange is too abrupt; there is a risk that something will be forgotten. Some possibilities go without being assessed when there is too much pressure. I don't believe this is the best strategy for proper communication. Besides; the perception is that they just don't care about you as an individual here. You are basically just another means of making money. All of this used to create a real dilemma for me. At first; it caused me to have as little interaction with American business partners as possible. Gradually; though; I have come to understand the cultural differences between our two countries. This has really helped me to feel more comfortable doing business here.unit2Bill Johnson's path to Olympic gold was different than that of most. In fact; even though he was the first American man to ever win the downhill skiing event; many rejected him as a true Olympic hero. He was a rebellious kid who came from a troubled background; and he boasted too much. Moreover; he only became involvedin skiing because a judge sent him to a ski school after he had stolen a car at age 17.There was no lifelong commitment to the sport. He did not exemplify the Olympic spirit. He did not gain distinction by continuously training for his event.Still; few failed to appreciate his marvelous race in the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo. He was just a natural skier and his technique was perfect for the course. And so even before the race began; he was claiming victory."This course was made for me. Nothing can stop me;" he had boasted. He also caused some comments when he talked about the millions of dollars he would be able to make after he won the race. This made many skiers hostile toward him. That just encouraged him even more. Then on the day of the event; he turned out the fastest."It takes a lot of courage to throw yourself down a mountain; "Bill Johnson remarked proudly after he won a gold medal for the United States."Not many can do that."unit3At first; my dad was not in favor of me marrying Will because Will is black. I guess my dad was a bit of a racist. Unfortunately; no arguments could counter Dad's beliefs. Despite his protests; though; Will and I decided to go through with our wedding. On a marvelous June day we were married in the park. The wedding went off without any hostile words or embarrassing exchanges. It was actually quite beautiful. There was just one problem. Many of our friends and relatives didn't attend our wedding. I had to conclude that my dad was not the only prejudiced person we know. Other than my father; no one had come out to speak against my relationship with Will. It did not seem appropriate for them to show their resistance to our marriage in this way. My dad had strong reservations about my marriage to Will; but at least he was there. Will and I decided to overcome this burden by showing everyone how wrong they were. We wanted not only to love one another; but also to defy racial hatred by loving one another. We probably weren't being all that realistic; but we did succeed with one person. My dad and Will have developed an amazing friendship. My dad says he has forgotten why he ever had any doubts about our marriage.Unit4What do we know about love Is it; as some people would suggest; a mysterious force Or can it be explained and possibly even created Well; even in this scientific and reason-driven age; love seems still to defy total understanding. We can; however; know something about love and make stronger connections between individuals. One thing that seems to affect love is distance. The common idea is that the love between people grows as they are separated. Sometimes it is true that longing for someone who has gone overseas becomes more intense.Something that nourishes love is danger. Send both lovers to dangerous places and they will end up loving each other more. This could be caused by the worry it develops. It could also be that feelings of uncertainty or need transform into love with time.Love gives us warmth; courage; and a feeling of being safe; but it also demands selfless devotion and sacrifice. If you are truly committed to finding true love; youshould make yourself more interesting. Do things that you enjoy and try to meet people who share identical interests.unit5My son has started to hang out with the wrong type of boys. He is fifteen years old and until recently I had always been grateful for how easy he has been to raise. Lately; though; he has ceased to listen to what I say. He used to be such a sweet boy; but being in high school seems to have hardened him against authority figures. The change in his attitude has been very noticeable even to his teachers. The other day I asked him to come straight home after school; but instead he rebelled and stayed out until ten o'clock. Later I found out that he had skipped school completely that day. I found out that he was with an bunch of boys who often cause trouble. I decided to forbid him to do anything with those boys; but he didn't listen to me. In spite of my objections to him being with those boys; he was with them the very next day.A friend of mine has a son who is having identical problems. She decided to give him a change of environment and sent him to a private school. I'm not sure this is the best solution; though. You can't just change a boy's behavior by changing his school every time he does something wrong. It is better to help a kid establish a good set of core values.unit6My name; Bobby; is used both for boys and girls. Girls spell it "Bobbie". It is characteristic for little boys to be given a name with a "y" sound at the end. For example; I often had a Jimmy; Johnny or Billy in my classes. In my second grade; I also had a Bobbie. In order not to confuse us when she called our names; our teacher assigned us the names "Bobbie girl" and "Bobby Boy". This caused me a lot of trouble on the playground. There; my friends labeled me "Bobbie girl". For my friends; the apparent contrast between my name and my sex was the source of much laughter. The fact that they labeled me as a girl was very embarrassing. I had a tendency to compensate for my name by acting more like a boy than I might have otherwise. I threw more rocks and yelled louder than the sum of all of the other boys added together. The real "Bobbie girl"; conversely; acted more like a girl. When my teacher realized she had made a mistake; she stopped calling us "Bobbie girl" and "Bobby Boy". Unfortunately; my friends never forgot or ceased calling me "Bobbie girl". Third grade was an improvement; the original "Bobbie girl" was in a different class. Also; I requested the teacher just call me "Bob".三、翻译30%unit11.她连水都不愿喝一口;更别提留下来吃饭了..She wouldn't take a drink; much less could she stay for dinner.2.他认为我在对他说谎;但实际上我讲的是实话..He thought I was lying to him; whereas I was telling the truth.3.这个星期你每天都迟到;对此你怎么解释How do you account for the fact that you have been late every day this week4.他们利润增长的部分原因是采用了新的市场策略..The increase in their profits is due partly to their new market strategy.5.这样的措施很可能会带来工作效率的提高..Such measures are likely to result in the improvement of work efficiency.6.我们已经在这个项目上投入了大量时间和精力;所以我们只能继续..We have already poured a lot of time and energy into the project; so we have to carry on.unit21.尽管她是家里的独生女;她父母也从不溺爱她..Despite the fact that she is the only child in her family; she is never babied by her parents.2.迈克没来参加昨晚的聚会;也没给我打电话作任何解释..Mike didn't come to the party last night; nor did he call me to give an explanation. 3.坐在他旁边的那个人确实发表过一些小说;但决不是什么大作家..The person sitting next to him did publish some novels; but he is by no means a great writer.4.他对足球不感兴趣;也从不关心谁输谁赢..He has no interest in football and is indifferent to who wins to loses.5.经理需要一个可以信赖的助手;在他外出时;由助手负责处理问题..The manager needs an assistant that he can count on to take care of problems in his absence.6.这是他第一次当着那么多观众演讲..This is the first time that he has made a speech in the presence of so large an audience.unit31.你再怎么有经验;也得学习新技术..You are never too experienced to learn new techniques.2.还存在一个问题;那就是派谁去带领那里的研究工作..There remains one problem; namely; who should be sent to head the research there.3.由于文化的不同;他们的关系在开始确实遇到了一些困难..Their relationship did meet with some difficulty at the beginning because of cultural differences.4.虽然他历经沉浮;但我始终相信他总有一天会成功的..Though he has had ups and downs; I believed all along that he would succeed someday.5.我对你的说法的真实性有些保留看法..I have some reservations about the truth of your claim.6.她长得并不特别高;但她身材瘦;给人一种个子高的错觉..She isn't particularly tall; but her slim figure gives an illusion of height.unit41.有朋自远方来;不亦乐乎It is a great pleasure to meet friends from afar.2.不管黑猫白猫;能抓住老鼠就是好猫..It doesn't matter whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.3.你必须明天上午十点之前把那笔钱还给我..You must let me have the money back without fail by ten o'clock tomorrow morning.4.请允许我参加这个项目;我对这个项目非常感兴趣..Allow me to take part in this project: I am more than a little interested in it.5.人人都知道他比较特殊:他来去随意..Everyone knows that he is special: He is free to come and go as he pleases.6.看她脸上不悦的神色;我觉得她似乎有什么话想跟我说..Watching the unhappy look on her face; I felt as though she wishes to say something to me.unit51.他说话很自信;给我留下了很深的印象..He spoke confidently; which impressed me most.2.我父亲太爱忘事;总是在找钥匙..My father is so forgetful that he is always looking for his keys.3.我十分感激你给我的帮助..I'm very grateful to you for all the help you have given me.4.光线不足;加上地面潮湿;使得驾驶十分困难..The bad light; coupled with the wet ground; made driving very difficult.5.由于缺乏资金;他们不得不取消了创业计划..Being starved of funds; they had to cancel their plan to start a business.6.每当有了麻烦;他们总是依靠我们..They always lean on us whenever they are in trouble.unit61.就像机器需要经常运转一样;身体也需要经常锻炼..Just as a machine needs regular running; so does the body need regular exercise. 2.在美国学习时;他学会了弹钢琴..He learned to play the piano while studying in the United States.3.令我们失望的是;他拒绝了我们的邀请..To our disappointment; he turned down our invitation.4.真实情况是;不管是好是坏;随着科技的进步;世界发生了变化..The reality is that; for better or worse; the world has changed with advance of new technologies.5.我班里的大多数女生在被要求回答问题时都似乎感到不自在..Most of the female students in my class appear to be ill at ease when they are required to answer questions.6.当地政府负责运动会的安全..The local government took charge of the security for the sports meeting.。

Why? Because of the more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, nicotine is the primary one that acts on the brain, altering people’s moo ds, appetites and alertness in ways they find pleasant and beneficial. Unfortunately, as it is widely known, nicotine has a dark side: it is highly addictive. Once smokers become hooked on it, they must get their fix of it regularly, sometimes several dozen times a day. In the US alone, 420,000 Americans die every year from tobacco-related illnesses.Breaking nicotine addiction is not easy. Each year, nearly 35 million people make a concerted effort to quit smoking. Sadly, less than 7 percent succeed in abstaining for more than a year; most start smoking again within days. So what is nicotine and how does it insinuate itself into the smoker’s bra in and very being? The nicotine found in tobacco is a potent drug and smokers, and even some scientists, say it offers certain benefits. One is enhance performance. One study found that non-smokers given doses of nicotine typed about 5 percent faster than they did without it. To greater or lesser degrees, users also say nicotine helps them to maintain concentration, reduce anxiety, relieve pain, and even dampen their appetites (thus helping in weight control). Unfortunately, nicotine can also produce deleterious effects beyond addiction. At high doses, as are achieved from tobacco products, it can cause high blood pressure, distress in the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems and an increase in susceptibility to seizures and hypothermia.First isolated as a compound in 1828, in its pure form nicotine is a clear liquid that turns brown when burned and smells like tobacco when exposed to air. It is found in several species of plants, including tobacco and, perhaps surprisingly, in tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant (though in extremely low quantities that are pharmacologically insignificant for humans). As simple as it looks, the cigarette is highly engineered nicotine delivery device. For instance, when tobacco researchers found that much of the nicotine in a cigarette wasn’t released when burned but rather remained chemically bound within the tobacco leaf, they began adding substances such as ammonia to cigarette tobacco to release more nicotine. Ammonia helps keep nicotine in its basic form, which is more readily vaporised by the intense heat of the burning cigarette than the acidic form. Most cigarettes for sale in the US today contain 10 milligrams or more of nicotine. By inhaling smoke from a lighted cigarette, the average smoker takes 1 or2 milligrams of vaporised nicotine per cigarette. Today we know that only a miniscule amount of nicotine is needed to fuel addiction. Research shows that manufacturers would have to cut nicotine levels in a typical cigarette by 95% to forestall its power to addict. When a smoker puffs on a lighted cigarette, smoke, including vaporised nicotine, is drawn into the mouth. The skin and lining of the mouth immediately absorb some nicotine, but the remainder flows straight down into the lungs, where it easily diffuses into the blood vessels lining the lung walls. The blood vessels carry the nicotine to the heart, which then pumps it directly to the brain. While most of the effects a smoker seeks occur in the brain, the heart takes a hit as well.Studies have shown that a smoker’s first cigarette of the day can increase his or her heart rate by 10 to 20 beats a minute. Scientists have found that a smoked substance reaches the brain more quickly than one swallowed, snorted (such as cocaine powder) or even injected. Indeed, a nicotine molecule inhaled in smoke will reach the brain within 10 seconds. The nicotine travels through blood vessels, which branch out into capillaries within the brain. Capillaries normally carry nutrients but they readily accommodate nicotine molecules as well. Once inside the brain, nicotine, like most addictive drugs, triggers the release of chemicals associated with euphoria and pleasure. Just as it moves rapidly from the lungs into the bloodstream, nicotine also easily diffuses through capillary walls. It then migrates to the spaces surrounding neurones –ganglion cells that transmit nerve impulses throughout the nervous system. These impulses are the basis for our thoughts, feelings, and moods. To transmit nerve impulses to its neighbour, a neurone releases chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters. Like nicotine molecules, the neurotransmitters drift into the so-called synaptic space between neurones, ready to latch onto the receiving neurone and thus deliver a chemical “message” that triggers an ele ctrical impulse. The neurotransmitters bind onto receptors on the surface of the recipient neurone. This opens channels in the cell surface through whichenter ions, or charged atoms, of sodium. This generates a current across the membrane of the receiving cell, which completes delivery of the “message”. An accomplished mimic, nicotine competes with the neurotransmitters to bind to the receptors. It wins and, like the vanquished chemical, opens ion channels that let sodium ions into the cell. But there’s a lot more nicotine around than the original transmitter, so a much larger current spreads across the membrane. This bigger current causes increased electrical impulses to travel along certain neurones. With repeated smoking, the neurones adapt to this increased electrical activity, and the smoker becomes dependent on the nicotine.Questions 1 – 71. Although nicotine is probably the well-known chemical in cigarettes, it is not necessarily the one that changes the psyche of the smoker when cigarettes are smoked.2. In spite of the difficulties, according to thetext more than thirty-five million people a yeargive up smoking.3. It has been shown that nicotine in cigarettescan improve people’s abilities to perform someactions more quickly.4. Added ammonia in cigarettes allows smokers to inhale more nicotine.5. Snorted substances reach the brain faster than injected substances.6. Nicotine dilates the blood vessels that carry it around the body.7. Nicotine molecules allow greater electrical charges to pass between neurones.Questions 8 – 108. Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: In this section, there are 3 passages. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. One of the most interesting paradoxes in America today is that Harvard University, the oldest university of higher learning in the United States, is now engaged in a serious discussion about what a university should be, and whether it is measuring up.Should Harvard—or any other university—be an intellectual sanctuary(圣地), apart from the political and social revolution of the age, or should it be a laboratory for experimenting with these political and social revolutions; or even an engine of the revolution? This issue was defined several years ago by Walter LippMann, a famous Harvard graduate: “If the universities are to do their work,” he said, “ they must be independent and they must be disinterested(公正)…They are places to which men can turn for judgments which are fair. Obviously, the moment the universities fall under political control, or under the control of private interests, or the moment they themselves take a hand in political affairs and leading positions in government, their value as independent as disinterested sources of judgment is weakened…”This is part of the discussion that is going on at Harvard today. Another part is the discussion of the militant(激进的) and even many conservative students that a university is the keeper of our ideals and morals, and should not be “disinterested”but active in bringing the nation’s ideals and actions together.Harvard’s men of today seem more troubled and less sure about personal, political and study purposes than they did at the beginning. They are not even clear about how they should discuss and resolve their problem, but they are struggling with them privately, and how they come out is sure to influence American university and political life.11. According to Walter LippMann, a university must _____.A. depend on the governmentB. take active part in political affairs and social issuesC. fall under the control of special and private interestsD. remain independent of our society12. Those who disagree with Walter LippMann argue that a university should_____.A. be engaged in a serious discussion on the role it plays in the societyB. support our old and established universitiesC. take an active part in solving society’s problemsD. not be interested in social revolutions13. In regard to their goals and purposes in life, Harvard men of today are becoming_____.A. more sure about themB. less sure about themC. Class interested in themD. completely lost14. The word “paradoxes” underlined in the first sentence of this passage means______.A. a difficult problemB. an out-of-the-ordinary conditionC. a self-contradiction (矛盾)D. an unusual situation15. According to the writer, the discussion going on at Harvard______.A. will soon be overB. will have no resultC. will influence future life in AmericaD. will cause little influence on other universitiesPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for self-esteem is the basis of a good mental health.A youngster, who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing, that he (or she) won’t try at all.Of course, they should be corrected when they do wrong: this is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises. Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is charge of himself; it’s like being in a car without brakes. The parent who says “No” when other parents say “Yes” sends a double message .He is also saying:” I love you, and I am ready to risk your anger, because I don’t want you to get into trouble.”Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a mother feels that she must read her daughter’s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees his parents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficult time laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him his due, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.16. According to the passage, parents owe their children the following things except______.A. carsB. privacyC. respectD. information about their body17. It is better to compare a youngster to hisbrighter brothers because it makes him try harder.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economies. It has been argued that the supply of a good land is limited. To feed a large population, poor land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be contained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more chance of development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to bebuilt unless there is a big demand. One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw material. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, the first concern of government will be to set a limit on the birthrate, whatever the final result may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and building industry grows weaker. Faced with concerns such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.21. The main topic of this article is _______.A. environment protectionB. population growthC. environment and economyD. climate changing22. The passage says that a small population may lead to _______.A. higher production, but a lower average incomeB. lower production and lower average incomeC. higher production and a higher average incomeD. lower production, but a higher average income23. According to the passage, the use of birth control perhaps is good for________.A. a developing countryB. a developed countryC. the whole worldD. each nation with a big population24. The author is aiming to show that ________.A. humans will run out of their food supply in the futureB. it is necessary for humans to carry out a worldwide plan for birth controlC. different nation have different views of population growthD. we need to take necessary measures to prevent the overuse of natural resourcesSection C Reading in Depth (10%)Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. For example, the ambitious student is very easy to identify. Not only do they work extremely hard but they also make sure that they know the right people and attend the right events. You'll see them chatting to lecturers after a lecture is finished. They usually look serious and carry big bags of books. The party girl is easily recognized by her fashionable clothes and the fact that at every party you go to she's surrounded by friends. Then there's the "techy", a student who knows everything about computers and technology. (5 points)Passage 1I don't know how many good teachers there are in the world, but I feel it is deeply important for a student who is in trouble to meet a good teacher.I had a maths teacher who hates to see struggling maths students. He always ridicules the slow students when he gets a chance. For example, the teacher looks down upon a student due to her failure in maths. It's not that this student is stupid but rather she has no interest in maths. The maths teacher always gives the girl the cold shoulder and says this girl is the stupidest student he has ever seen. One time this student got the lowest score on a maths exam, the teacher made fun of her and then students guessed who had the worst score. When that student had some questions to ask the teacher, he was第9 页共14 页impatient with her. Finally, the girl said to me that paradise is very far from her. Everyday she feels Eden, but there is no way to reach it. She feels that she is a tiny lantern which is placed into the water and will slowly drift out to sea until it can't be seen. What a lonely vision that is!All students have different abilities because each of them is unique. No one can foretell his future. The teacher should learn how to treat the slower students properly, how to encourage them and not to hurt their feelings. Please leave a bit of love for these special students."It is not how much we do but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving," said Mother Terasa. After all, love can creates power.66. In this article, the writer thinks that when a student is in trouble, it is very important that the student shoulddo his best to turn to some teachers.67. The underlined word "ridicule" in the second paragraph means laugh at.68. The girl fails in every maths exam because she is tired of the maths teacher.69. Skimming and Scanning (10 %)Directions:In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on The Answer Sheet. For questions 1-7, markY ( for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG ( for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with information given in the passage. Are Language Skills Enough? There is so much more meaning to a message than what exists in the spoken or written words. For example, if a person says, “You know, Barbara, I really like you,” it has different meanin gs depending on whether it is said by a man or woman, in an office or a bar. Context, the tone of voice, the stress put on certain words, as well as the eye contact, physical distance, and the relationship between the speaker and listener are all factors which give meaning to what’s being said. Sometimes, these factors can generate much more meaning than the words themselves. If a friend says to me, “Gee, I can’t wait to see the result of the upcoming election,” my interpretation of that message will be bas ed upon my knowledge of my friend’s political views, the situation with the current campaign, and my ability to understand the meaning behind the tone of voice. Our ability to understand such cues is developed without us being aware of it through our process of socialization. Our interpretation of these cues just comes naturally. Every culture has its own set of cultural rues that each member of that culture understands. It’s common how a person form Culture A and a person form Culture B interpret the very same words in totally different ways. Here are some examples. When “Sarcasm” Means “Sincerity”Marsha though things were gong well with her new French friends, particularly Bertrand. He often invited her to interesting and fun events, but he was often making fun of her. One day at an art exhibition, while looking at a particularly abstract piece, Marsha said that she couldn’t understand what the artist was trying to express. Bertrand smiled and responded, “Yes, I’m afraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.” Marsha was upset; she really liked him and could not figure out what caused him to frequently make fun of her. So, she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,” the host mother told her, “this means that he really likes you. In F rance, when someone feels comfortable enough to make fun of you, that means that you have been welcomed as a very close friend.”When “Now” Doesn’t Mean “Now”Joshua, an American student in Heredia, Costa Rica, called his Costa Rican partner to meet for coffee. When he asked what time they should meet, the response was “Nos encontranmos ahora en el paraque”. Ahora literallymeans now. So, he grabbed his jacket and headed straight to the park where they agreed to meet. Half an hour later, his friend arrived without the least sigh of regret for being late. After discussing the matter with his Spanish teacher, Joshua learned that in Costa Rica, ahora means sometime within the hour. And, if people decide to meet someplace like the park, it is no problem for one or the other person to wait for a while because they will spend some nice time in the park, probably running into some other friends, or meeting someone friendly. When “Yes” Doesn’t Mean “Yes”Many business people might have experienced this frustrating situation in Japan. Sarah, a young business woman form New York, was sent to Japan to close a big deal for her company. While giving her presentation, she became more and more certain of the sale because her Japanese business partners continually nodded their heads as she spoke. When she finished, she thought the deal was made and asked when they would like to sigh the agreement. She was shocked when she was told that they were not yet sure if they wanted to make the deal or not. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In the 1900's, American townspeople usually washed and brushed their teeth and combed their hair in the kitchen. Or they kept a water pitcher(大水罐)and a wash basin in their rooms and took care of these things there. The bathtub was a wash tub(澡盆)filled with water from the stove. If you were small enough you could sit down by drawing your knees to your chest. Otherwise, you washed yourself standing up. Often all the women and girls in the family bathed together. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.A small number of families did have running water. But that depended on whether there was a water system where they lived and on whether they could afford the plumbing(水管设施). Some people had bathtubs in their homes as early as 1895. But many others did not have their first bath in a bathtub until 1910 or later when they were fifteen or sixteen years old.11. In the first paragraph, "took care of" means _____.A. KeptB. looked afterC. usedD. kept and used12. In order to use the water from the stove, ther e_____ be a pipe connecting the tub with the stove.A. MustB. seemed toC. needn'tD. should13. We can infer(推断)that the plumbing at that time.A. cost littleB. was more expensive than a water systemC. was too expensive for every family to affordD. was not necessaryPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social educationof young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive. However, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.16. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children__________.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative17. Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think__________.A. children are reluctant to help each otherB. schools lay too much emphasis on co-operationC. children should grow up with competitive ideasD. schools give little actual instruction to children18. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, I had bought travel insurance. So my illness didn’t cost me a cent. It’s actually pretty simple. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice — you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can’t make any changes. You’re about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket — unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand. Most travel plans include some form of non-refundable element: your deposit, your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort. 大学英语读写译(一)期末测试题(1)Part I. Reading Comprehension (50%)Section A. Skimming and Scanning (10%)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet. For questions 1-7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.SpidersSpiders can be distinguished from other Arachnids because the prosoma (combined head and thorax) is only separated from the opisthosoma (abdomen) by a narrow waist, in other Arachnids the whole body appears to be much more of a single unit. All spiders produce silk, but only some construct webs to catch their homes and to protect their eggs. All spiders possess poison glands but very few of them are dangerous to humans, of the 600+species in Britain only 12 (at least one of these is a recent human assisted colonist) are strong enough to pierce the human skin, and apart from allergies, none are more dangerous than a common wasp. Most spiders have 8 eyes (though some have 6, 4, 2 or 0), as well as 8 legs. (By the way if you count the claws as separate leg section [which you shouldn‟t really] then their legs have 8 parts as well [coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, tarsus, metatarus, and claws]) There are more than 32000 known species of spider in the world. No human being has ever been officially recorder as having died as the result of a …tarantula‟ bite. All spiders are carnivorous and feed only on liquids, i.e. their preys‟ natural juices and the breakdown products of external digestion (meaning they spit, exude or inject digestive juices onto/into their prey ad suck up the resulting soup). So why not invite some to your next social do? What’s In a NameThe word …Arachnida‟ comes from the Greek word …Arachne‟ who was the daughter of Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer by trade. Arachne herself was a weaver, the best in all the known world. However in a foolish moment she challenged Athena, the daughter of Zeus and goddess of, among other things, waving to a weaving competition. Arachne wove so perfect a cloth that she tore it to shreds. Arachne became depressed after this and in the end she hung herself. Athena stirred to remorse at the knowledge of what her anger had wrought turned the rope Arachne had used to hang herself into a web and Arachne herself into a spider so that the beauty of her spinningshould not be lost to the world ever again. The Great Household Spider SafariThere are just over six hundred different sorts of spider in the British Isles. But of these only a handful are commonly found in houses. At the front of the head are a pair of what appear to be small legs. These are called palps and are used to guide food to the spider‟s mouth. The front of the head also has a group of six or eight eyes. On the underside of the body at the rear, are four or six small conical bumps or cylinders. There are the spinnerets from which the spider produces the silk to make its webs.Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by looking at their pales. Males have swollen ends to their pales which make them look as if they are wearing boxing gloves, these are often strange shapes if looked at with a hand lens. Females have normal looking pales that are not swollen at the ends. The largest spider is the Goliath spider, the female of which grows to reach a leg span of ten inches. The largest spider in Britain is the Cardinal spider which is a close cousin of Tim Tegenaria. Females can achieve a leg span of four and a half inches. It is known as the Cardinal spider as it was common in Hampton Court when Cardinal Wolsey lived there. The sight of these long legged spiders wandering around the palace at night used to frighten him. So far 32000 different kinds of spider have been discovered from all over the world. Britain has 630 different kinds of spider of which 250 are tiny Money spiders. The smallest of which has a body less than one millimeter long.Questions:1. All the silk produced by spiders construct webs to catch their food.2. Not all the poison glands possessed by spiders are dangerous to human beings.3. Spiders often kill humans in Britain when they pierce human skin.4. After seeing her enemy commits suicide, Arachne turned Athena into a spider.5. TimTegenaria spiders are closely related to tarantula spiders; both are found in Britain.6. So far31000 different kinds of spiders have been discovered from all over the world.7. Money spiders are the smallest spiders found in the Arachnids family.8. There are more than_______ known species of spider in the world.9. Telling male and female spiders apart is easily done by_______________.10. The largest spider is_____________.Section B Comprehensive Reading (30%)Directions:In this section, there are 3 passages. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a singleline through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. One of the strongest reasons for the raising of the school leaving age (ROSLA) has been that it will bring us nearer to the idea of “equal opportunity”.Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the ladder of success for clever children. It would be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is apparently so thorough. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less rich homes reach university or do well in other ways.Unfortunately, we now have plenty of evidence that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all male 18-20 year olds. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left schools at 15.It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5000 children from birth to 21 years old indicated that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after16.It is clear from this and much other evidence that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit the prizes—money, social respectability, and interesting jobs, which higher education gives. It is clear too that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social circumstances. Their parents often need the extra money another wage-earner can bring in; they do not value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much t hat they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather that they tend to say, “It‟s up to you”.11. It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children________.A. a more enjoyable time at schoolB. the same chances in societyC. the right to a better schoolD. higher scores in intelligence tests12. People would like to think that _________.A. equal numbers of poor and rich children reach universityB. those with the least money get the best educationC. intelligent children are always chosen by the systemD. only clever children do well13. Working class children are felt to be at a disadvantage because_______.A. many of the clever ones leave school earlyB. fewer go to university than ever beforeC. more than half leave school when they are 16D. fewer boys than girls stay at school after 1614. Many children leave school early because_______.A. their social circumstances make them unhappyB. they have to work to support their family‟s incomeC. their school is a dull and unhappy placeD. their parents don‟t allow them to make their own decisions15. This article shows that equal opportunity in education______.A. is a thing of the pastB. has not yet been achievedC. is there for those who merit itD. has greatly improved our societyPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Life really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world of wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoons can leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a sign of happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves.Dr. Robert Coles, an internationally famous doctor, is the w orld‟s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject, The Privileged Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, …such as better health, education and future work expectation. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can‟t buy love.”It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that‟s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Their parents‟ over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless.“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,” adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.”Today‟s rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So their priority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money16. According to the passage, children of rich families_______A. enjoy travelingB. can buy loveC. usually commit suicideD. are not always happy17. Dr. Robert Coles believes that________A being rich has as many advantages as being poorB. rich children often get too little entertainmentC. rich children sometimes can‟t enjoy the thing they are most in need ofD. rich children aren‟t given enoug h things18. Thousands of people all over the world claim to have seen them. Some believe them to be spaceships from other planets. Others insist that they are a secret type of aircraft being built on earth. Many people maintain that they are only natural phenomena happening under special temperature, light, or weather conditions All reports, however, agree that the strange objects move at extremely high speeds and fail to follow the laws of motion by reversing(逆转) direction instantly without slowing down.In the United States, the first flying saucers were reported on June 4, 1947, by a private plane pilot. He saw nine objects traveling in the sky. Each was disk-shaped and very bright. Because their movements we re compared to those of a “saucer skimming across the water”, newspaper reporters called them “flying saucers”.Some weeks after the first reported sighting, the United States Air Force was given the job of investigating all the reports of flying saucers. Because of the confusing variety of shapes, sizes, and colors reported, the Air Force adopted the term Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) to describe them.Since the Air Force officials began their investigation of flying saucers, they have identified most of the objects as stars, planes, manmade satellites, experimental missiles(导弹),or weather phenomena. Some of the UFO reports, including photographs, were deliberate(蓄意的)tricks made to cheat people. All the research so far has failed to prove that UFOs are spaceships coming from outside the earth. Most investigators agree, however, that more study is needed before the question of whether or not flying saucers really exist can be answered.21. For example, if a person says, “You know, Barbara, I really like you,” it has different meanings depending on whether it is said by a man or woman, in an office or a bar. Context, the tone of voice, the stress put on certain words, as well as the eye contact, physical distance, and the relationship between the speaker and listener are all factors which give meaning to what’s being said. Sometimes, these factors can generate much more meaning than the words themselves. If a friend says to me, “Gee, I can’t wait to see the result of the upcoming election,” my interpretation of that message will be based upon my knowledge of my friend’s political views, the situation with the current campaign, and my ability to understand the meaning behind the tone of voice. Bertrand smiled and responded,“Yes, I’m afraid French art is far too advanced for Americans to understand.” Marsha was upset; she really liked him and could not figure out what caused him to frequently make fun of her. So, she asked her host mother about it. “My dear,” the host mother told her, “this means that he really likes you. In France, when someone feels comfortable enough to make fun of you, that means that you have been welcomed as a very close friend.”When “Now” Doesn’t Mean “Now”Joshua, an American student in Heredia, Costa Rica, called his Costa Rican partner to meet for coffee. When he asked what time they should meet, the response was “Nos encontranmos ahora en el paraque”. Ahora literally means now. What Sarah did not know is that in Japan, nodding head does not necessarily mean “Yes” as it does in the U.S. It can also mean “Yes, I am listening and understanding what you are saying.”These stories provide just a few examples of how language skills are simply not enough to achieve effective communication in anther culture. To get the most of your international learning experience, focus on gaining cross-cultural skills as well as language skills. Cross-cultural skills will enable you to do the following:●Understand how cultural affects communication;●Deal with behavior that seems to you strange or offensive;●Learn form your cultural adaption process;●Communicate more effectively. These sills will also help you when you learn a new language. After all, language is a reflection of the culture from which it developed.Questions:1.This passage tells us that language skills alone are not enough for cross-culturalcommunication.2.On many occasions, a spoken or written message may have different meanings due tovarious contributing factors.3.We are born with the ability to understand the cultural cues.4.Marsha’s French friend, Bertrand, didn’t like her and often laughed at her ignorance ofthe French art.5.Joshua learned that in Costa Rica, people are usually late for their appointments andwo n’t feel sorry for that.6.Nodding in Japan is understood in quite different way form that in America.7.The stories given in the passage come form the author’s interview with Marsha, Joshua, and Sarah.8.The stories told in the passage show that language skills are not enough for people tocommunicate effectively in _____________________.9.Cross-cultural skills will help us learn form our___________________.10.________________________ will also helpful when we learn a new language.Section B Careful Reading (30 %)Directions:In this section, there are 3 passages. Inmost families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.A small number of families did have running water. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive. However, the need for making people sociable in thissense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education.
