Milan Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Milano; Lombard:Domm de Milan) is the cathedral church of Milan, Italy. Dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity (Santa Maria Nascente),it is the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, currently Cardinal Angelo Scola. The Gothic cathedral took nearly five centuries to complete. It is the 5th-largest church in the world andthe largest in Italy. The plan consists of a nave with four side-aisles,crossed by a transept and then followed by choir and apse. The height of the nave is about 45 meters, the highest Gothic vaults of a complete church (less than the 48 meters of Beauvais Cathedral, which was never completed). The roof is open to tourists (for a fee), which allows many a close-up view of some spectacular sculpture that would otherwise be unappreciated. The roof of the cathedral isrenowned for the forest of openwork pinnacles and spires, set upon delicate flying buttresses. The cathedral's five broad naves, divided by 40 pillars, are reflected in the hierarchic openings of the faade. Even the transepts have aisles. The nave columns are 24.5 metres (80 ft) high, and the apsidal windows are 20.7 x 8.5 metres (68 x 28 feet). The huge building is of brick construction, faced with marble from the quarries which Gian Galeazzo Visconti donated in perpetuity to the cathedral chapter. Its maintenance and repairs are very complicated.。

旅游英语之意大利篇

Rome (Italy)意大利罗马There's no escaping it:Rome means history. There are layers of the stuff - Etruscan(伊特鲁里亚的)tombs,Republican meeting rooms,Imperial temples, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers,Renaissance(文艺复兴)palaces and baroque basilicas(长方形基督教堂)。
In this city a phenomenal concentration of history, legend and monuments coexists(共存)with an equally phenomenal concentration of people busily going about their everyday life. It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking(惊人的)about the eternal city - the arrogant opulence of the Vatican(梵蒂冈)or the timelessness(永恒)of the Forum(古罗马广场)。
Rome is halfway down Italy's western coast, about 20km inland. It's a vast city, but the historic centre is quite small. Most of the major sights are within a reasonable distance of the central railway station. It is,for instance, possible to walk from the Colosseum(罗马圆形大剧场),through the Forum,up to Piazza di Spagna(西班牙广场)and across to the Vatican in one day,but you wouldn't really want to. All the major monuments are west of the train station, but make sure you use a map. While it can be enjoyable to get off the beaten track(平坦的路)in Rome,it can also be very frustrating and time-consuming.Most of the budget(便宜的)places to stay are clustered around Stazione Termini;this area is rife with pickpockets(扒手)and gangs of thieving children,so beware - do your best to look like you know where you're going. It is only slightly more expensive and definitely more enjoyable to stay closer to the city centre.Rome's mild climate makes it visitable year-round;however,spring and autumn are without doubt the best times to visit, with generally sunny skies and mild temperatures. Unfortunately, these times are also the peak tourist season, when the tour buses pour in(川流不息的涌入)and tourists are herded around like cattle. July and August are unpleasantly hot,and Romans traditionally desert the stiflingly hot city in August, with many businesses closing;try to avoid visiting at this time. From December to February there is briskly cold weather, although it's rarely grey and gloomy.Events-wise,Italy's calendar bursts year-round with cultural events ranging from colourful traditional celebrations with a religious and traditional flavour, through to cultural events. Summer is definitely the best time to visit if you want to catch the best of the festivals;however, the Romaeuropa festival is now a feature of the autumn calendar, the Roma opera season runs from December until June and the classical and contemporary music scene is lively all year round.Milan (Italy)米兰(意大利)The hard-working Milanese(米兰人)run their busy metropolis with efficiency and aplomb(沉着、冷静)。

邀请笔友来意大利旅游的英语作文的

邀请笔友来意大利旅游的英语作文的Dear Pen Pal,Hi! It's me again, your friend from Italy. I have the most exciting news to share with you! My parents said that if you want, you can come visit us here in Italy next summer. Can you imagine? You could actually come to my home and we could play together and go on adventures around my beautiful country. I really hope you can come because it would be so much fun!Italy is the most amazing place on Earth. The food here is out of this world delicious. We have pizza, pasta, gelato (that's fancy ice cream), and all kinds of other yummy treats. My favorite is the pizza though - the crispy crust, the melty cheese, the tasty tomato sauce. No pizza anywhere else tastes as good as the authentic Italian pizza here. You'll love it!And just wait until you see Venice! It's a city built totally on water, with canals instead of roads and boats instead of cars. Can you believe that? The houses are squeezed together along the little winding waterways and everyone gets around by boat or walking over bridges. My class took a field trip there and we got to ride in a gondola, which is a skinny black boat that a man rowswith a big oar at the back. It was so peaceful and romantic, gliding along the pretty canals. In Venice, you also have to see St. Mark's Square. It's this huge open area with the most magnificent church I've ever seen - St. Mark's Basilica. The outside is covered in gleaming golden mosaics and the inside has towering ceilings covered in more gorgeous mosaics. The floors are made of marble too! Around the square, there are outdoor cafes where you can sit and have a snack or drink while listening to live music. It's straight out of a storybook.Speaking of storybooks, you're going to flip when you see the ruins and castles we have here from medieval times! In Rome, the capital of Italy, you can tour around the remains of ancient Roman buildings like the Colosseum, where they used to have gladiator fights and other events. It's so cool walking through such an old, historical place and imagining what it was like thousands of years ago. There are also tons of fairytale castles and palaces all over Italy, like the one in Verona where the famous Romeo and Juliet love story took place. The towns these castles are located in look just like you'd picture a medieval village, with cobblestonestreets and little shops and homes huddled together. We can pretend to be knights and princesses! How fun would that be?And you can't come to Italy without visiting the museums and seeing some of the most incredible artwork in the world. Italy is home to masterpieces by famous Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and so many more. My favorite paintings are by this guy named Caravaggio who made these ultra-realistic works that just jump off the canvas. But really, everywhere you go in Italy, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking art and architecture. It's anart-lover's dream!Another thing I can't wait to show you is the Amalfi Coast. This is this gorgeous area along the water where these really old, colorful towns are built hugging the cliffs along the sea. The houses are all different bright shades of yellow, pink, orange, and blue and look so pretty contrasted against the turquoise waters. We can go on a boat tour along the coastline and go swimming and exploring the little beach towns. It'll be like a real-life fantasy! And that's really just the start! We also have incredible natural wonders in Italy like the Dolomites (huge, jagged mountain peaks) and all these beautiful lakes and rolling greenhills and vineyards in the countryside. We can go hiking and bike riding through these stunning landscapes and it'll feel like we're in a magical fairy wonderland.Seriously, Italy has it all when it comes to art, history, architecture, food, scenery - you name it. It's such a special and enchanting place and I'm just so lucky I get to call it home. So, what do you say, pen pal? Are you going to come visit me next summer? We are going to have the most epic adventures together if you do! Just let me know and I'll start counting down the days.Your Italian friend,[Your Name]。
