该航母在1967财年获得美国国会的授权，位于弗吉尼亚州纽波特纽斯的纽波特纽斯造船和干船坞公司获得了1.065亿美元（相当于今天的8.1661亿美元）。

龙骨于1968年6 月22日铺设，1972年5月13日下水，于1975年5月3日正式入役美国海军，归类于“攻击性航空母”。

尼米兹号航母服役后就成为了全世界排水量最大的军舰。

航母的飞行甲板长332.8米，两柱间长317米，斜角甲板长237.7米；舰宽为40.8米（船体）和76.4米（飞行甲板）；吃水为11.3米；机库空间是长208m*33m*8m；标准排水量是78280吨，满载排水量是101196吨；航母的动力系统为2×西屋A4W压水反应堆/260000马力、4×蒸汽涡轮、四轴双主舵；航速可达到30节（每小时55.6公里）。

尼米兹号航空母舰于1976年7月7日首次部署到地中海，于1977年2月7日返回弗吉尼亚州诺福克。

1977年12月1日至1978年7月20日进行了第二次顺利的地中海巡航。

第三次部署于1979 年9月10日开始到地中海，后续也是参加了空难事故和实战。
