2020新译林版新教材⾼中英语必修⼀unit2第⼆单元课⽂及翻译(附课本练习答案)Book 1 Unit 2ReadingWhen teenagers’ bodies and minds go through a period of rapid development, every part of their lives can be influenced. The magazine article below is about teenagers’ relationships with their parents. Before you read the article, think about the following questions:What physical and mental changes do you experience as you become a teenager How do you deal with themWhat do you think “strangers under the same roof” meansStrangers under the same roof?Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into a battle? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything? You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.Teenagers’ physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may feel anxious that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first targets of your anger. It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle ground— 5 10 15 Reading 17 no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents’ love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. “Why can’t they just let me go?” you may wonder. On the other hand, when you are struggling to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient —sometimes they forget that growing up is a rough ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.Although sometimes it may seem impossible to get along as a family, you can take action to improve the situation. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listencarefully, and address their concerns. Through this kind of healthy discussion, youwill learn when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.Just remember that it is completely normal to struggle with the stress thatparent-child tensions create, and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy period will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.Extended readingRead the short story about a mother’s love for her children.Mama and her bank accountEvery Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.“For the rent.” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.“I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me.Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?”And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, “Good. We do not have to go to the Bank.”We were all so proud of Mama’s Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, secure feeling. When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”. It was used for sudden emergencies, such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor.Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough.“We do not want to go to the Bank,” she reminded. We all shook our heads.“I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels volunteered.Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That’s not enough,” Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time. “I will give up smoking,” he said suddenly.Mama reached across the table and touched Papa’s arm. Then she wrote down another figure.“I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night,” I said. “Christine can help me.”Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama’s Bank Account. So many things came out of the Little Bank that year: Christine’s dress for the school play, my little sister Dagmar’s operation ... Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon. That was twenty years ago.Last year I sold my first story. When the check came, I hurried over to Mama’s and put it in her lap. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.”I noticed for the first time how old Mama and Papa looked. Papa seemed shorter, and Mama’s hair was silver now.“Tomorrow,” I told Mama, “you must take it to the Bank.”“You will go with me, Katrin?”“That won’t be necessary. Just hand it to the teller. He’ll pay it into your account.” Mama looked at me. “There is no account,”she said. “In all my life, I’ve never been inside a bank.”And when I didn’t—couldn’t—answer, Mama said seriously, “It is not good for little ones to be afraid—to not feel secure.”(Adapted from Kathryn Forbes’s Mama’s Bank Account, which has 17 short stories and describes the struggles and dreams of a family in San Francisco in the early 1900s)TranslationUnit 2Reading最熟悉的陌⽣⼈?每天的家庭晚餐幻化成激烈战⽃?热情开朗的谈话蜕变成冷淡警惕?⽆论什么事情都夏⾍语冰?其实⼤家都⼀样。

6-month-olds in music classes and swimming classes.Parents fear that if other children are attending these classes, they will be holding their own children back if they do not enroll, too. The other extreme, simply taking a laissez-faire approach and letting children do—or refuse to do—whatever they want,is not the answer either,of course.Dr Taylor emphasizes that parents need to push their children based on what is best for the children, not what is best for themselves. If children understand that an activity is in their best interests, then they will accept it,he finds.Dr Taylor and other family experts remain pessimistic about the possibilities for widespreadsocial change.“The force of our popular culture, driven by money and superficial(表面上的) values, cannot be resisted,” he says. But change can take place at a“microlevel”,in families and schools. When changes do occur, the rewards can benefit everyone in the family. One mother supporting this new approach toward parenting mentions the advantages her family experienced after her children cut back on activities.“The biggest thing is that si nce we have done this,we are rested,” she says.“Not only are our kids rested, because they're not in a ton of stuff, but my husband and I are rested, because we're not driving them everywhere. We weren't living in the moment when we were always busy.We were living by the schedule. The She seldom became angry, but she was this time."Oh," I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn't even get an allowance. "My father is going to have a fit," I thought. I didn't want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth, "I did it." It was hard enough to say what I had done.My teacher took down a book from one of our library shelves and I had never known my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me."I know how much you like birds," she said as she stood looking down at myguilt-ridden face. Book 1 Unit 1ReadingSenior high school brings a lot of new experiences to everyone. The speech below was given tonew senior high school students by their principal, Mr Xu, on the first day of term. Before youread the speech transcript, think about the following questions:•How do you think senior high school will be different from junior high school?•What do you think the principal will talk about in his speech?Hello, everyone! Welcome to senior high school! Today is the start of a new term, the start of a three-year journey and the start of a promising future.I can’t wait to describe to you what senior high school life is like. The path before you leads to a world full of challenges: a new environment, new knowledge and new ways of thinking. However, for those of you with a positive mind, opportunity lies in each challenge. When you rise to the challenges, you will have the opportunity to acquire great knowledge and enjoy personal growth. Most importantly, your time and effort at senior high school will open the door to your potential.“What is potential?” you may ask. Put simply, potential is your natural ability that can be developed when you try hard enough. Who knows what beautiful works of art you will create, what medical advances you will make or what amazing technologies you will develop! The possibilities are endless, and I have confidence in your ability to make a difference to your family, to your community and to our country. Over the next three years, you will discover your potential while you develop as a student and as aperson. To fully realize your potential, it is important for you to make the most of our school resources. Take advantage of your classes, learn from your teachers and classmates, and make use of our school facilities. There are also a lot of school activities for you. Join a club or two, and take an active part in different sports.Of equal importance are good study habits, useful skills and a positive attitude. Carefully plan your study, set clear goals and balance your schoolwork with other activities. As a senior high school student, you must make efforts to improve your communication and problem-solving skills. Last but not least, always look on the bright side and never lose hope, even in difficult situations. In time you will find yourself growing into a well-rounded individual. As Lao-Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You need to make a continuous effort to train your mind and develop your character. Senior high school will help you learn and grow, yet you alone are responsible for realizing your great potential. Be confident, do your best and make us proud!Extended readingJohn Li, a Chinese senior high school student, has spent a year studying in the UK. Read his article in the school magazine about his school life abroad.\Last year, I had the chance to study at a British secondary school as an exchange student. I stayed with a lovely host family and went to school with their son, Daniel. We were both in year ten and we got on well. He is learning Chinese and will come to stay with me this year in China! The British school day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Students usually have to learn nine subjects at secondary school. Every student in the UK must study English, Maths and the Science subjects: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students can also choose to study other subjects, such as History, Art and Business. The classes are different from those in China. Each teacher has their own classroom and the students move around for every lesson. In most of my classes, there were only about 20 students. In the beginning, however, it was still tough for me to remember everyone’s name!I enjoyed most of the classes, but some of them were quite challenging. Technology classes were fun. I made a clock to take home. The teacher helped me put the parts together. I like it so much that I still use it as my alarm! I found Maths quite easy and enjoyable because the material was less advanced in the UK than in China. However, learning in English was a great challenge for me. There were a lot of difficult English words, especially in Geography and Biology. Class discussion is very important in the UK, but I could not make a great contribution because sometimes I wasn’t able to express myself clearly in English. Although there was not as much homework as I was used to, it was still challenging. Fortunately, my teachers and classmates were always helpful and gave me lots of encouragement. My language skills improved over time.During the hour-long lunchtime, I ate in the school dining hall. There were lots of options including bread and butter, chicken pie and puddings, but I still missed my mum’s cooking! After lunch, I often played on the school’s huge sports field with Daniel and his friends. Sometimes we just relaxed under a tree or sat on the grass. After school, there were many clubs to join. The one that attracted me most was the Rugby Club. We played once a week, and it was great fun. Also, I enjoyed acting in the Theatre Club. I still have photos of myself acting in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Joining clubs was a great way to meet British students and make friends with them.I am glad to have the opportunity to experience this different way of life. I met some great people and learnt a lot about school life in the UK. Daniel and his family were fantastic hosts, and his friends were very nice as well. I can’t wait for Daniel to visit China!TranslationUnit 1 Back to schoolReading发挥你的潜能大家好!欢迎进入高中阶段学习!今天,是新学期的开始,是一段三年旅程的开端,更是一个锦绣前程的起点。

Doctors say we all need to exercise for 20 minutes three times a week if we want to be healthy. Walking is an easy form of exercise that everyone can do. 英语译林牛津版必修1Unit1同步阅读理解阅读理解She is only 12 years old but lives only with her younger sister. Her parents are far away from home, and she has to take care of her younger sister. She is He Can,a student at Anqing Jiangzhen Middle School in Anhui, one of the “stay-at-home children” in her town.To make money, these kids’ parents go to big cities to find jobs.Their children have to stay at home because they have to go to school. He Can’s parents left home when she was only four. They only come back for the Spring Festival every year.Because she had to live with different relatives at different times,He Can went to eight different primary schools.“I used to complain,”she said.“But later I understood my parents. They have to go away to make a better life for us.”He Can said her frequently(频繁地) changing life also has a good side.“When I went to a new school,I had to try to make friends,”said He Can.“I became outgoing. Now I’m not afraid of talking to people.”He Can said her relatives were kind to her. They taught her how to cook and wash clothes. When He Can was going to start junior high school, her parents agreed to let her live out with her younger sister. She rents a house near the school.Sometimes their grandmother comes over and helps them.Every day,He Can gets up at 6∶00 a.m. and cooks breakfast. Then the two girls go to school. They have supper at 6∶00 p.m.Then He Can does chores and helps her sister take a shower. She usually goes to bed at 9∶30 p.m.Though busy,He Can is still a top student in her class. She said the secret is never to put things off until tomorrow.“I think my life is OK,”she said.“But if possible,I would like my parents to settle down(安顿下来) and live with us.”1.Why does He Can live only with her younger sister?A.Because their parents don’t like them.B.Because their parents have to work in a big city.C.Because they enjoy living by themselves.D.Because their schools are too far away from their home.2.Where did He Can live before she started junior high school?A.In her relatives’ houses.B.In her own house.C.In a house she rented.D.In her school.3.What does He Can think of changing schools so often?A.She hates it and complains a lot about it.B.She thinks it good for her growth.C.She enjoys it because she can make more friends.D.She thinks it bad for her studies.4.What is He Can’s secret of being top at studies though busy?A.She often asks her relatives for help.B.She exercises a lot to make herself stronger.C.She gives her sister some work to do.D.She tries to finish everything before going to bed.【参考答案】1.B2.A3.B4.D阅读理解Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he suddenly stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons that made it cool for him not to care about studies was the power of his peer(同龄人) group. The lack of right male role models in many of their lives—at home and especially in the school environment—means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against. They don’t see men succeeding in society so it doesn’t happen to them that they could make something of themselves.Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture is all-powerful (全能的).Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and provide the right role models for them.Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a child’s peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child. It’s useless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch television or play computer games.Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems somewhere he can work away from his peers and go home after the other children.1.Why did Tom give up studying?A.He disliked his teachers.B.His parents no longer supported him.C.It’s cool for boys of his age not to care about studies.D.There were too many subjects in his secondary school.2.What seems to have a bad effect on students like Tom?A.Peer groups.B.A special unit.C.The students’ judges.D.The home environment.3.What should schools do to help the problem schoolboys?A.Wait for their change patiently.B.Train leaders of their peer groups.C.Stop the development of street culture.D.Give them lessons in a separate area.4.A teacher’s work is most effective with a schoolboy when he________.A.is with the boy alone and gives him some suggestionsB.teaches the boy a lessonC.sends the boy home as punishmentD.works together with another teacher【参考答案】1.C2.A3.B4.A阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)AGoing to the beach is many Americans' favorite hospitals was found in the water. The garbage included glass bottles with samples of blood, and people were afraid they might get AIDS from the blood. At some beaches, sewage(下水道)was found in the water.Americans were shocked by this state of affairs.People didn't think of the underwater garbage because it was out of sight. Some of the most polluted waters still look beautiful.San Francisco Bay He was the most successful writer in popularizing traditional Chinese culture. Chinese people had a deeply-rooted admiration for noble qualities and love for the country. So he won many people’s hearts. Many people are fond of watching films and TV dramas adapted from his books, which influenced many people’s personality and value.Jin’s influence knew no national boundary. No matter in New York, Singapore or Vancouver, where there are Chinese, there are his readers. His death marks the end of an era for martial art novels. We can hardly expect to see other writers with such influence and artistic achievement as him.In terms of writing technique, Jin borrowed from Western plays. In general the fatter subjects slept about 1.8 hours a week less than those with normal weights.“Americans experience insufficient sleep and corpulent (过于肥胖的) bodies. Clinicians (临床医师) are aware of the burden of obesity on patients,” the study said.“Our findings suggest that major extensions of sleep time may not be necessary, as an extra 20 minutes of sleep per night seems to be associated with a lower body mass index,” it added.“We caution that this study does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between restricted sleep and obesity (but) investigations demonstrating success in weight loss via extensions of sleep would help greatly to establish such a relationship.”The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine along with an editorial by Turek and Northwestern colleague Joseph Bass commenting on it and related research. In a interview with Reuters(路透社), Turek said that some studies have shown sleep deprivation cause declines in an appetite suppressing protein hormone called leptin (瘦体素), and increases in another hormone that causes a craving for food. In addition neuropeptides (神经肽) in the brain governing sleep and obesity appear to overlap, he said.Obesity has been rising dramatically in developed countries and reached epidemic levels in the United States, it added, leading to a variety of health problems.5. Do you think that people who sleep less tend to be fat? Please make a survey.6. In your opinion, which is a better way, diet or exercise?7. What do you think is your normal body weight?8. What do you want to do to keep yourself healthier?CHealthy DietsInstead of buying only fresh foods, Americans nowadays buy many more convenience foods. There are foods which are already partly or completely prepared. Many of them are frozen, such as frozen dinner, heat-and-serve French fries, and frozen pizzas. There are also many canned (put in a can) convenience foods, such as ready-made spaghetti (意大利细条实心面), soups, stews (炖熟菜肴), and vegetables.Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don’t like to cook or wash dishes. But they often cost more than fresh, unprepared foods and may contain artificial additives (a chemical added to the food). Also, many people feel they don’t taste as good as home cooked foods.Health food and Co-opsIn the 1960s, a “back-to-the-earth”movement was started by young people in the United States. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. From the movement came a new understanding of food and health. Many people now prefer natural and organic (chemical-free) foods to the prepared foods sold in health food stores and in food co-ops, which are small stores and where customers help manage the store. In co-ops, food is usually not packaged. Customers bring their own bags and jars and scoop (汲取) their food out of boxes or baskets. The Diet Craze (节食热)These days Americans are more and more concerned with their weight. Perhaps as many as 70 million Americans are on weight dollar business. American supermarkets sell a variety of diet foods such as diet soft drinks, diet candy, and diet salad dressings. Dieters also spend money on diet pills, exercise machines, and jogging suits (健美服). Each year dozens of new diets are popularized. They have such names as the Miracle Diet (a supernatural even), the Nine Day Wonder Diet, and the Easy 24 Hour Diet. There is even one called the Ice Cream Diet, which advises the dieter to eat only ice cream for lunch and dinner. For dieters who cannot lose weight on their own, there are many well-organized diet groups, which offer help and encouragement.9.

Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job,did Jim really feel good about it,as a friend?Or did he envy my luck?” “And Paul—why didn’t I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back,it’s too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies?Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen,we will miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you,“You’re a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says,“You’re a lucky guy.” or “You’re a lucky girl.” that’s being friendly. But lucky “dog”?There’s a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he?Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks?Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes?Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake. 1.This passage is mainly about .A.how to interpret(解释)what people sayB.what to do when you listen to others talkingC.how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with peopleD.why we go wrong with people sometimes2.According to the author, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that . A.notice the way the person is talkingB.take a good look at the person talkingC.mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyesD.examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his postureBI have a neighbor we call “Happy”.I have never seen her angry at anything and neverheard her say a harsh word to anyone or about anyone.Happy and her husband Ben,70,have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans,we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market,Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.Last month,Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all day food festival”.We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.By 9∶00 am,there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10∶00 am,there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner,we played games. As we were leaving,Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty (慷慨的赠予) of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company.None of it would have happened if it had not been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!5.According to Paragraph 2,people wished they also had a garden so that .A.they could spend happy times together with their family in itB.they could grow vegetables and sell at the marketC.they could invite their neighbors and hold parties in itD.they didn’t have to spend so much money on food6.For what purpose did Happy and Ben invite the neighbors to their garden?A.To ask them to attend a birthday party.B.To help them get to know each other.C.To let them enjoy what they grew in the garden.D.To ask them to share some interesting stories.7.What did the writer most probably think of the time he spent in the garden?A.He thought it was too short but enjoyable.B.He thought it was wonderful.C.He thought it was not as good as he thought.D.He thought it was too terrible.8.We can infer that_________________________.A.Happy and her husband Ben don’t like spending time with othersB.Happy and her husband Ben sometimes quarrel with each otherC.Happy and her husband Ben are a generous and warmhearted coupleD.Happy and her husband Ben live on the food they grow in their garden四、语法填空(1)One morning,I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about 1. But now the number has fallen greatly to only 20 percent. Although more people are going to the gym, fewer and fewer people are walking. Doctors say we all need to exercise for 20 minutes three times a week if we want to be healthy. Walking is an easy form of exercise that everyone can do. If you keep walking one mile each day, you will improve your health very quickly. Of course, there are many other methods to exercise, so we can find the best suitable ways for ourselves. Doctors say we need to try to make people healthier because not doing enough exercises causes many health problems. They also suggest we go for a walk every day after dinner.。
