All that time helps trees grow faster. For the past 100 years, trees have been experiencing fast growth in mild areas from Maryland to Finland, to Central Europe, where the growth rate of some trees has even sped up by nearly 77% since 1870. Supposing wood were just as strong today, those gains would mean more wood for building, burning, and storing carbon captured from the atmosphere. But is wood really as dense (茂密的) as it used to be?Hans Pretzsch, a forest scientist in Germany, and his colleagues wanted to find an answer. They carried out a study of the forests of Central Europe. They started with small pieces of experimental land in southern Germany, some of which have been continuously monitored since 1870. Pretzsch and his team took core samples (样品) from the trees — which included Norway spruce, sessile oak, European beech, and Scots pine — and analyzed the tree rings. They found that in all four species, wood density had decreased by 8% to 12%. "We expected a trend of the wood density like this, but not such a strong and significant decrease," Pretzsch says. Increasing temperatures, and the faster growth they spur, probably account for some of the drop. Another factor, Pretzsch says, is more nitrogen in the soil from agricultural fertilizer and vehicle exhaust. Previous studies have linked increased fertilizer use to decreased wood density. Above all, the study suggests that the higher temperatures — combined with pollution from car exhaust and farms — are making wood weaker, resulting in trees that break more easily and wood that is less durable."I am getting worried," says Richard Houghton, an ecologist at the Woods Hole Research Center in Massachusetts, who was not part of the new study. As the density of the samples dropped, so did their carbon content. That means forests may suffer more damage from storms and may be less efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide than scientists think, Houghton says.1.Paragraph 1 is written to ______.A. prove an ideaB. introduce the topicC. give an exampleD. describe a fact2.What does the study show?A. 高二英语选修8(外研版):Module 3选做题
选 做 题Ⅰ.短文填空根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两项为多余选项。
We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don't do a very good job. __1__.So, you have to give a speech —and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble (结结巴巴) over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it's over. I'm just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.” Cheep up! __2__. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. __3__. Don't talk over their heads, and don't talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. __4__. And be yourself. 高二英语选修八_Unit3_单元测试卷(名师)
Unit3 单元测试卷(名师)Book 8 Unit 3 单元测试题一、阅读理解ADo you have imagination? Do you like to solve problems? Can you? If so, you could be the next great inventor. “But I'm just a kid”, you might be! Don't worry about a little thing like age. For example, one famous inventor-Benjamin Franklin-got his start when he was only 12.At that young age, he created paddles for his hands to help him swim faster. Finally, his creation led to what we know is called flippers! So, you don't have to be adult to be an inventor. One thing you do need, though, is something that kids have plenty of: curiosity and imagination. Kids are known for looking at things in new and unique ways. So, what should you do if you have what is a great idea for an invention? Talk to a friend or family member about it. Get input from others about your idea. Then ask them to help you create a working model-called a prototype(原型) of your idea.Once you have a prototype, you can test it. Sometimes your idea turns out to be not as great as you thought. At other times, though, you realize it is a good idea and your prototype can help you figure out how to make it even better. If your idea is really a good one, an adult can help you contact companies that might be interested in it. You will also want an adult's help to get a patent for your idea, so that it is protected and can't be stolen by someone else. If you need some inspiration, consider these kids and their inventions:Jeanie Low invented the Kiddie Stool when she was just 11. It's a folding stool that fits under the kitchen sink. Kids can unfold it and use it to reach the sink all by themselves. At the age of 15, Louis Braille invented the system named after him that allows the blind to read.Chelsea Lanmon received a patent when she was just 8 for the “pocket diaper(尿布)”, a new type of diaper that includes a pocket for holding baby wipes and powder. 1.By saying “But I'm just a kid”,you probably mean you .A.are too young to achieve anythingB.can do anything though you are youngC.are old enough to become an inventorD.have to learn knowledge from other people2. Kids are most likely to be inventors probably because they .A.would like to make friends with othersB.usually work hard at their lessons at schoolC.like playing all kinds of toys at homeD.think about things in quite different ways3.Who invented something that helps the blind to read?A.Jeannie Low.B.Benjamin Franklin.C.Chelsea Lanmon. D.Louis Braille.4. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested onhumans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.5.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.A. started sleep more easilyB. were more anxiousC. were less activeD. woke up later6.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?A. 高二英语人教版选修8unit3 Section Ⅰ课时作业(含答案解析)
Ⅰ阅读理解AThere are many reasons why college and university students often failto get full nights of sleep. Many American students are away from theirparents for the first time when they attend college. They might not be usedto having total freedom in how they plan their days and nights. Parties, latenight study meetings, or just time spent relaxing with friends—these are all things that cut into college students’sleep habits.A few years ago, Michael Scullin began teaching the science of sleep to psychology students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The class centered round why the body needs to sleep and the physical and mental health problems caused by a lack of sleep. This includes difficulty focusing on studies or controlling one’s emotions, and increased risk of many diseases.“When you are at your most sleep-deprived(睡眠不足的) is when you are least likely to be able to judge how sleepy you are, and how much that sleepiness is impacting you,”Scullin said. He said his students seemed to enjoy the class and were interested in the material he was teaching. But when he asked them whether they were choosing to get more sleep after what they had learned, most of them said no.Scullin came up with a plan to get his students to sleep more: he offered to give them extra points on their final exam, the class’s most important test. The plan worked better than Scullin expected. All the students who took part performed better on the exam than those who did not, even before the extra credit points were added.Scullin offered some ways to avoid health problems caused by a lack of sleep. Among these, he emphasized, parents should try to get enough sleep themselves to show its importance to their children.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要说明充足的睡眠对学生的学业表现会产生积极的促进作用。

Eating out is more popular in Britain today than it has ever been. In 2006, for the first time ever, British people spent more eating out than cooking for themselves and eating at home. It seems that many British people are becoming increasingly interested in how good their food tastes, and also how healthy it is.However, eating out can also be expensive. As British people do not eat out every night of the week, eating in arestaurant is often seen as a special occasion. When going on afirst date and wanting to impress him/her, or if celebrating an anniversary or a birthday, many people like to go to a restaurant to eat, and people often also eat in a restaurant before going to the cinema or the theater. As in all cultures, there are many rules of etiquette(礼仪) surrounding food and eating. The knife and fork should be used in the correct way! It is also impolite to have your elbows(肘部) on the dining table when you are eating.Almost all British cities have a vast range of food as well as traditional British food, and all from the very cheap to the very expensive—French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Thai, Japan and many, many more. In fact, when asked which was their favorite food, more British people said an Indian curry(咖喱菜肴) than any other dish!As well as dining in a restaurant, when people are tootired to cook after work they often get a "take-away". This means that they order from a take-out restaurant by telephone, and then go to collect it and take it home to eat. Many take-out restaurants also deliver it to your house. While you can normally find a take-out restaurant for almost any food, the most popular are Italian, Indian and Chinese and then all you have to do is to open the door, pay and eat!46. Some examples of American fast food are hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fried chicken, and so on. Some types of international fast foods might be German sausage and Schnitzel, Italian pizza, Japanese sushi and tempura, Chinese eggrolls and noodles and the like. The variety of fast foods all over the world is growing. Even so, this kind of style is becoming worldwide. Fast-food places usually prepare and serve the items quickly. Many are part of fast-food chains (eating places with the same name andcompany owner). For example, the biggest and most famous American fast-food chain serves hamburgers in nearly every part of the world. For several reasons, many people choose fast food. First,it is quick and convenient. Second, it is cheaper than special home-cooked meals or formal restaurant dinners. And third, it is easy to find every eating place with the same company name. The atmosphere and style of most fast-food places is casual, comfortable, and familiar. Why do other eaters stay away from this fast, easy kind of nourishment? The main reason is its low nutritional value. Fast food doesn't have large amounts of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and the like-elements necessary for good nutrition and health. In contrast (相反), most types of fast food have a lot of fat, sugar, or salt in them. Possibly, these things can cause or increase health disorders, like heart disease, and some kinds of cancer. Recently, these quick and easy kinds of world wide nourishment are generally getting better and more healthful. For example, manyfast-food restaurants now have put vegetable items on their menus. Of course, human beings around the world don't always eat in fast-food places. The variety of food choices is large now and is probably going to increase. The number of food preparation methods is growing too. Cooking customs, eating habits, and food preferences all over the world are becoming more healthful. But the worst drought in half a century is hitting corn and wheat harvests. The drought across the central United States adds to concerns about world food supplies and prices in the coming years.Experts say by 2050, the world will have to produce atleast sixty percent food to feed a population growing bigger and bigger. China, a major food importer, is looking for producers around the world to guarantee future food supplies.China has invested in food production in Australia and New Zealand. A new source of supply is Ukraine. Ukraine was known as the breadbasket of Europe because of rich corn and wheat harvests a century ago.Galyna Kovtok is chief executive of Ukraine's largest agricultural business, ULF(乌克兰新牧集团). She predicts thatwithin a few months her company will be approved to export corn to China. That will make Ukraine the first country outside the Americas to do so. ULF will soon have almost two million tons of elevator storage capacity as it prepares for the Chinese market. Chinese money is financing the building of six grain elevators. But the company's equipment is largely American, including half-million-dollar John Deere combines to harvest wheat.ULF's grain production per hectare is now halfway between Ukrainian averages and the high yields of the American Midwest. But farming depends on the weather. Across the Black Sea region—in Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan—drought this year is pushing harvests down by fifteen to twenty percent.Traditionally, the Black Sea region is the main source of wheat for North Africa and the Middle East. But this year, on the supply side, Russia may have to stop exports. And, on the demand side, Africa and the Middle East are now competing with China. At the same time, a new report says large parts of Asia may face long periods of severe drought within ten years. It says northern China, India, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Pakistan will be especially hard hit. It says other parts of Asia are likely to face longer and wetter monsoons(雨季) because of climate change.57. 语篇提能阅读理解AHow men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, they called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations — the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increase.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they make our speech silly and rude.1.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?A. BPoetry is one of the important art forms of literature, and is an easy way to express your feelings. Moreover, everyone understands it in their own way. Some find relief in poems; some read them simply for peace; some read poems for simple artistic pleasure. There are some special features of poetry, which make it quite different from other forms of literature. First of all, poems have rhythmic patterns. Generally most parts of a poem follow the same form of rhythm. Poems may have rhyme, but they don't have to. The lines are neatly arranged together so that they express a particular feeling or emotion. There can be various types of poems but according to the pattern or the form, there are mainly three types:Lyrics: The lyric mainly concentrates on human thoughts and emotions rather than a story. Lyrics always bear song-like appeal. These are mainly short poems. Popular lyric poem forms are the elegy, the ode and the sonnet. William Shakespeare, Edmund Waller and Keats are some of the greatest lyric writers of all times.Narrative poems: This type of poetry tells a story. Narrative poems are usually long poems. Epics and ballads fall under this type. Some of the greatest epic poets are John Milton, Dante, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexander Pope,William Shakespeare, etc..Dramatic poems: Any drama that is written in verse is a dramatic poem. These poems generally tell a story. Black verse, dramatic monologuesand closet drama belong to this type. William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson are some of the great dramatic poets.Whatever the form is, one thing, which cannot be denied, is that poetry is one of the most powerful tools to express our feelings.语篇解读本文主要讲了诗歌的一些特点以及诗歌的几种分类。
