《高级英语阅读二》期末试题(请把答案写在试题下面的“答案卷”上,在离线作业栏目提交)I Read Lesson 8 ,Text A “The Girl in the Fifth Row”, translate the following two sentences into Chinese. (阅读教材《高级英语阅读教程(下册)》第八课课文A,翻译以下句子)On my first day as an assistant professor of education at the University of Southern California, I entered the classroom with a great deal of anxiety. My large class responded to my awkward smile and brief greeting with silence. For a few moments I fussed with my notes. Then I started my lecture, stammering; no one seemed to be listening.II Read lesson 3 ,Text A “To the Victor Belongs the Language”, answer the following Questions (阅读教材第三课课文A ,回答问题):To the Victor Belongs the LanguageBy Rita Mae BrownLanguage is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. A study of the English language reveals a dramatic history and astonishing versatility. It is the language of survivors, of conquerors, of laughter.A word is more like a pendulum than a fixed entity. It can sweep by your ear and through its very sound suggest hidden meanings; preconscious associations. Listen to these words: "blood," "tranquil," "democracy.'' Besides their literal meanings, they carry associations that are cultural as well as personal. One word can illustrate this idea of meaning in flux: "revolution." The word enters English in the 14th century from Latin via French. (At least that's when it was first written; it may have been spoken earlier.) "Revolution" means a turning around; that was how it was used. Most often "revolution'' was applied to astronomy to describe a planet revolving in space. The word carried no political meaning."Rebellion" was the loaded political word. It too comes from Latin (as does about 60 percent of our word pool), and it means a renewal of war. In the I4th century "rebellion" was used to indicate a resistance to lawful authority. This can yield amusing results. Whichever side won called thelosers rebels—they, the winners, being the repositories of virtue and more gunpowder. This meaning lingers today. The Confederate fighters are called rebels. Since the North won that war, it can be dismissed as a rebellion and not called a revolution. Whoever wins the war redefines the language."Revolution" did not acquire a political meaning in English until at least the 16th century. Its meaning—a circular movement — was still tied to its origin but had spilled over into politics. It could now mean a turnaround in power. This is more complicated than you might think. The 16th century, vibrant, cruel, progressive, held as a persistent popular image the wheel of fortune—an image familiar to anyone who has played with a tarot deck. Human beings dangle on a giant wheel. Some are on the bottom turning upward, some are on the top, and some are hurtling toward the ground. It's as good an image as any for the sudden twists and turns of Fate, Life or the Human Condition. This idea was so dominant at the time that the word "revolution" absorbed its meaning. Instead of a card or a complicated explanation of the wheel of fortune, that one word captured the concept. It's a concept we would do well to remember.Politically, "rebellion" was still the more potent word. Cromwell's seizure of state power in the mid-I 7th century came to be called the Great Rebellion because Charles Ⅱ followed Cromwell in the restoration of monarchy. Cromwell didn't call his own actions rebellious. In I689 when William and Mary took over the throne of England, the event was tagged the Glorious Revolution. "Revolution" is benign here and politically inferior in intensity to "rebellion".By 1796 a shift occurred and "revolution'' had come to mean the subversion or overthrow of tyrants. Rebellion, specifically, was a subversion of the laws. Revolution was personal. So we had the American Revolution, which dumped George III out of the Colonies, and the French Revolution, which gave us the murder of Louis XVI and the spectacle of a nation devouring itself. If you're a Marxist you can recast that to mean one class destroying another. At any rate, the French Revolution was a bloodbath and "revolution" began to get a bad name as far as monarchists were concerned and holy significance as far as Jacobins were concerned. By that time "revolution" was developing into the word we know today—not just the overthrow of a tyrant but action based on belief in a new principle. Revolution became a political idea, not just a political act.The Russian Revolution, the Chinese Revolution, the Cuban Revolution —by now "revolution" is the powerful word, not "rebellion.'' In the late1960's and early 1970's young Americans used the word "revolution" indiscriminately. True, they wanted political power, they were opposed to tyrants and believed in a new political principle (or an old one, depending on your outlook) called participatory democracy. However, that period of unrest, with its attendant creativity, did not produce a revolution. The word quickly became corrupted until by the 80's "revolution'' was a word used to sell running shoes.Whither goest thou, Revolution?1. What is the implied meaning of the last sentence of paragraph 1 “It is the language of survivors ,of conquerors ,of laughter”2, Can you give some other examples in English or in Chinese to show that language is constantly changing?III Read lesson 1 Text B , Do True or False Questions(阅读教材第1课课文B ,判断对错):I Became Her TargetMy favorite teacher's name was "Dead-Eye" Bean. Her real name was Dorothy. She taught American history to eighth graders in the junior high section of Creston, the high school that served the north end of Grand Rapids, Mich. It was the fall of 1944. Franklin D. Roosevelt was president;American troops were battling their way across France; Joe DiMaggio was still in the service; the Montgomery bus boycott was more than a decade away, and I was a 12-year-old black newcomer in a school that was otherwise all white. My mother, who had been a widow in New York, had married my stepfather, a Grand Rapids physician, the year before, and he had bought the best house he could afford for his new family. The problem for our new neighbors was that their neighborhood had previously been pristine(in their terms) and they were ignorant about black people. The prevailing wisdom in the neighborhood was that we were spoiling it and that we ought to go back where we belonged (or, alternatively, ought not to intrude where we were not wanted). There was a lot of angry talk among the adults, but nothing much came of it.But some of the kids, those first few weeks, were quite nasty. They threw stones at me, chased me home when I was on foot and spat on my bike seat when I was in class. For a time, I was a pretty lonely, friendless and sometimes frightened kid. I was just transplanted from Harlem, and here in Grand Rapids, the dominant culture was speaking to me insistently.I can see now that those youngsters were bullying and I was culturally disadvantaged. I knew then that they were bigoted( 偏执的 ), but the culture spoke to me more powerfully than my mind and I felt ashamed for being different - a nonstandard person. I now know that Dorothy Bean understood most of that and disapproved of it. So things began to change when I walked into her classroom. She was a pleasant-looking single woman, who looked old and wrinkled to me at the time, but who was probably about 40.Whereas my other teachers approached the problem of easing in their new black pupil by ignoring him for the first few weeks, Mrs. Bean went right at me. On the morning after having read our first assignment, she asked me the first question. I later came to know that in Grand Rapids, she was viewed as a person who believed, among other things, that Negroes were equal.I answered her question and the follow-up. They weren't brilliant answers, but they did establish the fact that I had read the assignment and that I could speak English. Later in the hour, when one of my classmates had failed to give an answer, Miss. Bean came back to me with a question that required me to clean up the girl's mess and established me as a smart person. Thus, the teacher began to give me human dimensions, though not perfect ones for an eighth grader. It was somewhat better to be a teacher's pet than merely a dark presence in the back of the room. A few days later, Miss Bean became the first teacher ever to require me to think. She asked my opinion about something Jefferson had done. In those days, all my opinions were derivative( 缺乏独创性的 ). I was for Roosevelt because my parents were and I was for the Yankees because my older buddy from Harlem was a Yankee fan. Besides, we didn't have opinions about historical figures like Jefferson. Like our high school building or Mayor Welch, he just was. After I stared at her for a few seconds, she said: "Well, should he have bought Lousiana or not?""I guess so," I replied tentatively."Why?" she shot back. Why? What kind of question was that, I complained silently. But I ventured an answer. Day after day, she kept doing that to me, and my answers became stronger and more confident. She was the first teacher to give me the sense that thinking was part of education and that I could form opinions that had some value. Her final service to me came on a day when my mind was wandering and I was idly digging my pencil into the writing surface on the arm of my chair. Miss Bean suddenly threw a hunk of gum eraser at me. By amazing chance, it hit my hand and sent the pencil flying. She gasped, and I crept( 爬 ) shamefacedly after my pencil as the class roared. That was the ice breaker.Afterward, kids came up to me to laugh about "Old Dead-Eye Bean." The incident became a legend, and I, a part of that story, became a person to talk to.1.The story happened during the Second World War.2.I was not the only black kid in the school .3.The children in the neighborhood are not friendly to me but the adults didn’t discriminate us.4.I was just moved from another place to Grand Rapids.5. Dorothy Bean was an old kind teacher.6.The other teachers neglected their black pupil in their class.7.Dorothy Bean believed that Negroes were equal with the whites.8.Dorothy Bean want to show her care to me by asking me questions.9.It is Dorothy Bean who taught me how to think .10.I disliked Miss bean finally because she threw the gum eraser at me which made me laughed at by my classmates.答案卷I,TranslationII,Answer questions: 1.2.III判断对错:1-5:_____6-10 :_____。

Reading comprehension 10%The relationship between the home and market economics has gone through two distinct stages. Early industrialization began the process of transferring some production processes (e.g. clothmaking, sewing, and canning foods) from the home to the marketplace. Although the home economy could still produce these goods, the processes were laborious and the market economy was usually more efficient. Soon, the more important second stage was evident- the marketplace began producing goods and services that had never been produced by the home economy, and the home economy was unable to produce them (e.g. electricity and electrical appliances, the automobile, advanced education, sophisticated medical care). In the second stage, the question of whether the home economy was less efficient in producing these new goods and services was irrelevant;if the family were to enjoy these fruits of industrialization, they would have to be obtained in the marketplace. The traditional ways of taking care of these needs in the home, such as nursing the sick, became sociallyunacceptable( and, in most serious cases, probably less successful). Just as the appearance of the automobile made the use of the horse-drawn carriage illegal and then impractical, and the appearance of television changed the radio from a source of entertainment to a source of background music, so most of the fruits of economic growth did not increase the options available to the home economy toe either produce the goods or services or purchase them in the market. Growth brought with it increased variety in customer goods, but not increased flexibility for the home economy in obtaining these goods and services. Instead, economic growth brought with it increased consumer reliance on the marketplace. In order to consume these new goods and services, the family had to enter the marketplace as wage earners and consumers. The neoclassical model that views the family as deciding whether to produce goods and services directly or to purchase them in the marketplace is basically a model of the first stage. It cannot accurately be applied to the second ( and current ) stage.1. The reason why many production processes were taken overby the marketplace was that __D__.A. it was a necessary step in the process of industrializationB. they depended on electricity available only to the market economyC. it was troublesome to produce such goods in the homeD. the marketplace was more efficient with respect to these processes2. It can be seem from the passage that in the second stage ____B___.A. some traditional goods and services were not successful whenprovided by the home economyB. the market economy provided new goods and services never producedby the home economyC. producing traditional goods at home became sociallyunacceptableD. whether new goods and services were produced by the home economybecame irrelevant3. During the second stage, if the family wanted to consume new goods and services, they had to enter the marketplace __C___.A. as wage earnersB. both as manufacturers and consumersC. both as workers and purchasersD. as consumers4. Economic growth did not make it more flexible for the home economy to obtain the new goods and services because ___C__.A. the family was not efficient in productionB. it was illegal for the home economy to produce themC. it could not supply them by itselfD. the market for these goods and services was limited5. The neoclassical model is basically a model of the first stage, because at this stage __A__.A.the family could rely either on the home economy or on the marketplace for the needed goods and servicesB. many production processes were being transferred tothe marketplaceC. consumers relied more and more on the market economyD. the family could decide how to transfer production processes to themarketplaceIII. At best, he is in danger of not fulfilling his educational potential; at worst, he is in danger of cruelty or neglect.Enforced school absence in childhood is sometimes used by adults to justify their own career failure. It is difficult for a child to play truant regularly if his parents are keen for him to attend school. Much truancy is openly condoned; as for the rest, not knowing that your children play truant is equivalent to not ensuring that they are at school. It shows lack of interest in their whereabouts, apathy about their education, or inability to control them-i.e., ineffective parents..…The characteristics which lead families to reject regular schooling are likely to have other detrimental effects on the children besides educational failure. For what could make parents decide that the most widely agreed route to secure employment, social acceptance and personal satisfaction is not for them? The first reason is a general difficulty in dealing with family responsibilities, particularly in the stressful environment of modern cities. Getting the child to school on time is too much to cope with(alarm clock, breakfast, clothes, shoes, gym cdothes, lunch money). Secondly, the child's company may comfort a depressed, isolated mothe The school's insistence on uniforms or other obligations and, possibly, its undisguised disapproval of an "inadequatel"family, may be the last straw.Children who grow up in such families are likely to be deprived in many ways besides education. In these families, education is written off as a waste of time. For a child growing up, this is possibly more serious than the loss of education. Habitual non-attendance can accustom children very early in their lives to rejecting the values and legal requirements of society. It is a training in deviance and anti-social behaviour which can lay the foundation for a generally deviant career. The common progression from truancy or parentally-condoned absence to juvenile crime has been reliably established. In greatest danger of all is the child who successfully plays truant for long periods without his parents' knowledge. His personal isolation and alienation, not just from conventional behaviourbut from his own family, puts him in danger of delinquency, drugs or mental illness in later life. Truancy has been called the "kindergarten of crime", and bad school attendance spells failure and possible unemployment in later life.It was soon realized that non-attendance was too complex and serious a problem to be dealt with by education departments alone. Much responsibility forschool attendance was, therefore, transferred to social workers. This move has, on its own, however, possibly created as many problems as it has solved. This is because the seriousness with which they regard non-attendance is an issue on which social workers and workers in education differ. Social workers tend to regard it as merely one symptom of social failure which, particularly if homelessness, physical neglect, marital problems and illness are present, does not justify more attention than the rest.Workers in education consider the other problems as all the more reason why the children concerned should have the advantage of regular schooling. The longer they stay truant, the greater are their chances of geting into further trouble. One chief education welfare officer told me:"The best form of social service you can do for deprived children is to see that they receive education in the normal school setting."I was given access to a few cases of nine-year-old children selected by their head teacher for causing concern due to problems arising outside school.I read their files and talked to the workers involved about how each, from his professional point of view, saw the chain of events since the initial referral. In cases concerned with school absence, this method produced a commentary of the slow progression towards stalemate which can occur when two departments with different priorities are jointly responsible for solving the same problem. For how can a decisive plan for action ever be formed if it depends on the cooperation of two people who basically disagree?Non-attendance can so injure a child's life chances that it deserves to be tackled by a more single-minded attack than this.A concerted policy should focus on the following areas: first, the school's own capacity for holding the interest of pupils; second, its efficiency in registering unexplained absences; third, school-oriented social work; fourth, boarding schools; and fifth, public attitude. The general climate of a school is obviously a powerful factor in a child's decision to play truant, so creating an acceptable school atmosphere is one of the most challenging assignments teachers face. It must, however, be distinguished from the separate task of setting up efficient machinery for following up suspected truants. This consists of treating any unexplained absence-even lateness, which is often an indication of absence to come as serious. If the school immediately queries the first and subsequent unexplained absence, it will be much more difficult for the child to become a habitual absentee. The school's success in keeping non-attendance to a minimum also depends on the effectiveness of its education welfare officer, the official link between school and home. Ideally, when alerted about a suspected absence, he makes an immediate home visit to see what has gone wrong. In the first instance he may simply go to "collect excuses", gradually forming his own idea of the real reason for the child's absence the child is bullied at school, the mother is unhappy when the childis at school, the family does not get up in time, the parents don't know about the truancy, the child has not got a uniform, and so on.Though the officer will do what he can to alleviate any problem he stumbles on, his main interest is to get the child back to school.Another ingredient of a general attack on chronic non-attendance should be boarding education. Every Education Welfare Officer has his core of cases of children whose parents do not believe in education; who have such psychological problems of their own that they need their children for company or who are so anti-authority that they will not hand their children over to any representatives of the "establishment"they detest. These are the parents with whom the officer, and the school or social workers get nowhere and whose children get no education to speak of, if left in their home environment.Teachers, education welfare officers and social workers are sometimes excessively reluctant to consider boarding school. They regard it as a punitive action with a certain finality for the child. Many referrals are, therefore, made too late to be really useful. Sending a child to a boarding school should be toimprove a situation which is not going well. However, everybody is so wary of it, that we tend to use it when it is really too late; when parents are ready to be relieved of a child who is a problem-thus giving the child good reason to feel rejected. When the child is still wanted, and sent to boarding school against his parents' will, then it can really solve the problem by answering the child's educational needs, without destroying family bonds. Finally, the public apathy towards truancy is a positive incentive to children who have difficulties at school. The man in the street, even when knocked sideways by a diminutive footballer during school hours, merely curses and walks on. Would absence rates be any different if the public occasionaly "had a go"at obvious non-attenders and encouraged them to give their teachers another chance to make school worthwhile for them?1. Every child with poor school attendance record is unable to fulfill his educational potential and is going to suffer cruelty or neglect.2. Many parents do not know that their children play truant regularly, which shows their lack of interest in their children's education or inability to control them.3. Parent's difficulty in dealing with family responsibility is not a reason which leads families to reject regular schooling.4. Habitual non-attendance can cause children reject the values and legal requirements of society very early in their lives.5. Truancy or parentally-condoned absence may or may not lead to juvenile crime.6. Mental illness in later life is another bad effect of truancy.7. Non-attendance is such a complex and serious problem that it can't be dealt with by education department alone.8. According to this passage, the social workers and educational department didn't cooperate very well because they disagree basically.9. According to the writer, registering unexplained absence is not very effective to resolve regular non-attendance.10. Unlike the parents, the teachers, social workers and education welfare officers are unwilling to send truants to boarding school in the early stage.II Diretions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is fllowed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth. Light get through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment endurable. Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called "rem". Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely dificult to be sure about radiation damage--a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her sex organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed children or even grandchildren. Missions of the Apollo flights have had to Cross belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo Crew accumulated a large amounts of rems. So far, no dangerous amount of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.11According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is essential to man in that a. it protects him against the harmful rays from space b. it provides sufcient light for plant growth c. it supplies the heat necessary for human survival d. it screens off the alling meteors12 We know from the passage that.a. exposure to even tiny amounts of radiation is fatalb. the effect of exposure to radiation is slow in comingc. radiation is avoidable in space explorationd. astronauts in spacesuits needn't worry about radiation damage13 The harm radiation has done to the Apollo crew member.a. is insignificantb. seems overestimatedc. is enormousd. remains unknown14 It can be inferred from the passage that a. the Apollo mission was very successful b. protection from space radiation is no easy job c. astronauts will have deformed children or grandchildren d. radiation is not a threat to well-protected space explorers15 The best title for this passage would be.a. The Atmosphere and Our Environmentb. Research on Radiationc. Effects of Space Radiationd. Importance of Protection Against RadiationPassage 2.Taste is such a subjective matter that we don't usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyone's preference, is that it' sone person's opinion. But because thetwo big cola companies Coca-Cola and Pepsi Cola are marketed so aggressively, we' ve wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that callenged people who identfied themselves as either Coca-Cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting. We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola dlassic or Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought they'd have no trouble tllig their brand from the other brand. We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet Cola drinkers. Then we fed them four unidentifed samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the participants' choices with what mere guess-work could have accomplished.Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19 regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a lttle worse-only 7 of 27 identified all four samples correctly. While both groups did better than chance would predict, nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Twa people got all four samples wrong. Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so fatigue, or taste burnout, was not a factor. Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.16 According to the passage the preference test was conducted in order to a. find out the role taste preference plays in a person's drinking b. reveal which cola is more to the liking of the drinkers C. show that a person's opinion about taste is mere guess-work d. compare the ability of the paticipants in choosing their drinks17 The statistics recorded in the preference tests show a. Coca-Cola and Pepsi are people's two most favorite drinks b. there is not much difference in taste between Coca-Cola and Pepsi C. few people had trouble tlling Coca-Cola from Pepsi d. people's tastes differ from one another18 It is implied in the first paragraph that.a. the purpose of taste tests is to promote the sale of colasb. the improvement of quality is the chief concern of the two cola companiesc. the competition between the two colas is very strong.d. Blind tasting is necessary for identifying fans19 The word "burnout"(in the second sentence from the end, Para. 5) here refers to the state of_____a. being seriously burnt in the skinb. being unable to burn for lack of fuelc. being badly damaged by fired. being unable to function because of excessive use20 The author's purpose in writing this passage is to a. show that taste preference is highly subjective b. argue that taste testing is an important marketing strategy C. emphasize that taste and price are closely related to each other d. recommend that blind tasting be introduced in the quality control of colas二.翻译题请将下列句子翻译为汉语(共40分,每题20分)I Translate the fllowing two paragraphs into Chinese.1 Instead of having to establish rules and limits,an arduous and often frustrating job, instead of having to work at socializing children in order to make them more agreeable to live with, parents could solve all these problems by resorting to the television set.:We cannot eliminate the risks except by not doing those things but by doing so we just subtitute a whole new set of risks;instead of risking buying a house with dry rot,we risk having a bad landlord.。

We have left out its title, which indicates clearly its purpose, in the hope that the reader will reconstruct it after reading the text.Sunnyside is one of the few surviving and best-documented examples of American romanticism in architecture and landscape design. Andrew Jackson Downing featured Sunnyside in his Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening (1841) as an example of the "progressive improvement in Rural Architecre.."which, he explained, strives to be in "perfect keeping"with "surrounding nature"by its "varied"and "picturesque"outline. ' Architectural beauty,"he taught, "must be considered conjointly with the beauty of the landscape,"Walking the 24-acre grounds is a pleasure in every season. Swans glide on the pond Irving called "the ltle Mediterranean", and a stone flume delights the ear with the sound of rushing water. A path leads up a small rise and from there down into "the glen,"and up to the house. Behind the house, another path winds along the Hudson for views of the river at its widest point, the Tappan Zee.The modest stone cottage which was later to become Sunnyside was originally a tenant farmer's house built in the late-seventeenth century on the Philipsburg Manor. During the eighteenth century, the cottage was owned by a branch of the Van Tassel family, the name Irving later immortalized in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".Irving purchased the cottage in 1835 and directed the remodeling, adding Dutch-stepped gables, ancient weathervanes, and developing Gothic and Romanesque architectural features for other parts of the house. He was so pleased with his home that in 1836 he wrote to his brother, Peter: "I am living most cozily and delightully in this dear, bright lttle home, which I have ftted up to my own humor. Everything goes on cheerily in my ltte household and I would not exchange the cottage for any chateau in Christendom.'Today's visitor to Sunnyside sees Irving's home much as it appeared during the final years of his life. The author's bookdined study contains his writing desk--a gift from his publisher, G.P. Putnam and many personal possessions. The dining room, in which Irving and his dinner guests often gathered to enjoy the beautiful sunsets over the Hudson River, adjoins the parlor. Here Irving played his flute, while his nieces, Sarah and Catherine, accompanied him on the rosewood piano. The piano and other original furnishings still grace the room. The small picture gallery off the parlor contains some original ilustrations for Inving's work. The kitchen was quite advanced for itsday, having a hot water boiler and running water fed from the pond through a gravity-blow system. The iron cookstove was also a "modern convenience,"replacing the open hearth in the 1850's.The second floor of the house contains several bedrooms, each of which has its own personal character. The guest bedroom is furnished with a French-style bed and painted cottage pieces. The ingenious arches in this and other rooms were designed by Irving. His bedroom, where he died in 1859, contains the author's tester Sheraton bed, along with his walking stick and a number of his garments and personal effects. The small, bright room between the bedrooms might have been used by Irving's nephew and biographer, Pierre Munro Irving, who cared for his undle during the last months of his life. The room was used originally to store books and papers. The bedroom used by Irving's nieces contains an Irving-family field bed with hand-made bobbin lace hangings, a chest of drawers, sewing stands, and an ormamental stove. The guest room contains a cast iron bed probably made in one of the foundries along the Hudson.Write True(T)or False(F)for the fllowing questions.1.Sunnyside is the former residence of Washington Inrving in Washington D.C2.Sunny side is a typical representative of Romanticism of American city architecture.3.According to Andrew Jackson Downing, architectural beauty must be in harmony with the beauty of the surrounding landscape.4.During the 18th century, the cottage was owned by Van Tassel who was mentioned by Irving in his book"the Legend of the Hollow".5.Irving didn't make any change to the cottage after he purchased it.6.Today's Sunnyside has changed a lot compared with its appearance in Inving's time.7.Sunnyside was built near the Hudson River.8.The study, the dining room, the parlor and the kitchen are all on the first floor of Irving's house..9.AIl the bedrooms on the second floor are almost furnished in the same style.10.Washington Irving was cared for by his daughter during the last period of his life.II选择题Directions:There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followved by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Exchange a glance with someone, then look away.Do you realize that you have made a statement?Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a diferent statement.Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person's gaze without being intimate, rude,or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do.You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no threat.Since being dlose to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to emit a signal tlling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman(1963)calls"a dimming of the lights".You look down atthe floor at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger's eyes.Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator? You will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself. If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you tlling another person?Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance,a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They tpcally gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3seconds,before ltting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare,he signals"I know you,""I am interested in you,"or"You look peculiar and I am curious about you."This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.11.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that.a.every glance has its significanceb.staring at a person is an expression of interest C.a gaze longer than 3 seconds is unacceptable d.a glance conveys more meaning than words12.If you want to be left alone on an elevator, the best thing to dois__,a.to look into another passenger's eyesb.to avoid eye contact with other passengersC.to signal you are not a threat to anyoned.to keep a distance from other passengers13.By"a dimming of the lights"(Para.1)Erving Coffman means"___.”a.dosing one's eyesb.turning off the lightsC.ceasing to glance at othersd.reducing gaze-time to the minimum14.If one is looked at by a stranger for too long,he tends to feela.depressedb.uneasyC.curiousd.amused15.The passage mainly discusses_a.the limitations of eye contactb.the exchange of ideas through eye contactC.proper behavior in different situationsd.the role of eye contact in interpersonal communicationPassage 2The picnics, speeches, and parades of today's Labor Day were all part of the first celebration, held in New York City in 1882. Its promoter was an Irish-American labor leader named Peter J. MCGuire. A carpenter by trade, McGuire had worked since the age of eleven, and in 1882 was president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (UBC]). Approaching the City's Central Labor Union that summer, he proposed a holiday that would applaud "the industrial spirit -the great vital force of every nation". On September 5his suggestion born fruit, as an estimated 10,000 workers, many of them ignoring their bosses' warnings, left work to march from Union Square up Fifth Avenue to 42nd Street. The event gained national attention, and by 1893 thirty states had made Labor Day an annual holiday. The quick adoption of the scheme may have indicated less about the state lawmakers' respect for working people than about a fear of risking their anger. In the 1880s the United States was a land sharply divided between the immensely wealthy and the very poor. Henry George was accurate in describing the era as one of "progress and poverty."In a society in which factory, owners rode in private Pullmans while ten-year-olds slaved in the mines, strong anti-capitalist feelings ran high. Demands for fundamental change were common throughout the labor press. With socialist demanding an end to"wage slavery"and anarchists singing the praises of the vitues dynamite, middle-of-the-roaders like Samuel Gompers and McGuire seemed atratively mild by comparison. One can imagine practical capitalists seeing Labor Day as a bargain: A one-day party certainly cost them less than paying their workers decent wages.16. Judging from the passage, McGuire was a. a moderate labor leader b. an extreme anarchist in the labor movement C. a devoted socialist fighting against exploitation of man by man d. a firm anti-capitalist demanding the elimination of wage slavery17. We can see from the first paragraph that the first Labor Day march a. immediately won nationwide support b. involved workers from 30 states C. was opposed by many factory owners d. was organized by the UBC]18. Which of the fllowin is the key factor in the immediate approval of Labor Day as a national holiday?a. The lawmakers' respect for the workers.b. The workers' determination to have a holiday of their own.C. The socialists' demands for thorough reform.d. The politicians' fear of the workers' anger.19. We learn from the passage that the establishment of Labor Day____a. was accepted by most bosses as a compromiseb. marked a turning point in the workers' struggle for more rights C. indicated the improvement of the workers' welfare d. signaled the end of "wage slavery"20. McGuire proposed Labor Day in order to a. draw people's attention to the striking contrast between the rich and the poor b. make prominent the important role of the working dlass in society C. win for the workers the right to shorter working hoursd. expose the exploitation of the workers by their bosses III Translate the following two paragraphs into Chinese.1 Gardening is a moral occupation, as well, because you always start in spring resolved to keep it looking neat this year, just like the pitures in the catalogues. But by July, you once again face the chaos of unthinned carrots, lettuce and beets.2 Isn't that beautiful?
