AI clearly remember my mom telling me to drink milk every day—one glass in the morning and another at night.I also remember loving it while my sister thought quite the opposite—she would surreptitiously pour her milk into the sink or water the plants with it! I guess I should thank my mom for making us drink a lot of milk, so rich in calcium(钙), during those important years.Today, calcium shortage is one of the main concerns of women in their 30s or even early 20s.The great fear is that when we reach our 50s or 60s, osteoprosis(骨质疏松症)will set in.That is why you can see a lot of advertisements for products supposedly containing a lot of calcium.Because calcium is not that easy to acquire from the food we normally eat, busy women these days should take calcium supplements(补充物).There are a lot of different forms of these---calcium carbonate(碳酸钙),oyster(牡蛎)shell or bone-meal-based calcium supplements. You have to be careful when choosing which kind to take. This is because calcium is not easily absorbed by the body.So the fact that you are taking supplements doesn’t mean that the body is actually benefiting from them.Different supplements may have different instructions on dosage(剂量)and manner of intake. You can ask your doctor to help you determine which supplement is the best for your needs.21. From what the author’s mother did we may inferthat___________________.A.her children had osteoporosisB.she knew her children would benefit from milkC.she must have suffered from osteoprosisD.she didn’t like her daughter who didn’t obey her order22. Based on the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.The author’s sister will suffer from osteoprosis when reaches her 50s or 60sB.Many businessmen have already been selling products supposedly containing calcium.C.We can’t get enough calcium only from food we eat every day D.Women as young as their 20s should be concerned about calcium shortage23. What does the underlined word “surreptitiously”in the firstparagraph probably mean?A.Honestly B.Frankly C.Secretly D.Curiously24. We may infer from the last paragraphthat____________________.A.what one chooses as a calcium supplement might not workB.one shouldn’t take in calcium without the permission of a doctor C.the more calcium supplements one uses, the more calcium one can take inD.it is dangerous to use calcium supplements without the guidanceBPeople living in the UK take quite a few holidays abroad and in the country each year. Choices made about where to go, how to get there and what to do can either benefit or harm the environment. While on holidayMany of the things you can do to the greener on holiday will be the same things you can do at home—but there are also some extra things too, like avoiding gifts made from endangered plants and animals. Here are some suggestions:●Making the most of locally produced fo od and drink, and local activities and attractions will support people in the area you arevisiting and reduce the need for further environmental influence from transport.●Switching off any air conditioning, heating and lights will help reduce climate change effect.●Save water—some countries suffer from water shortages and saving water can help avoid damage to our natural habitats. Endangered speciesSome gifts and foods available in some countries can be made from endangered plants or animals. Check before you buy, but if you doubt, avoid animal and plant gifts. More details of the types of products to avoid any illegal trade hotspots can be found on the Souvenir Alert webpage.Making a positive contribution to the place you are visiting. There are ways in which your holiday can help support local people and the environment.●There are many opportunities to volunteer and help with projects that conserve and improve natural habitats.●When you are away, or if you are looking for somewhere tovisit, you can support projects or attractions which protect wildlife, such as nature reserves and conservation projects.25. According to the passage, we can _______ to help reduce climate change effect.A. make good use of waterB. buy local food and drinkC. save electricityD. go around on foot26. Deciding what comes next can be difficult.”Says professor Morvarid Taheripour, the head of the athletes’project. “Some people say athletes die two deaths. You kind of die when you stop playing and you die in real life. So they’ve got to come back to life and figure out ‘How am I going to make a living at 25 for maybe another 40 years?”For Taheripour, the partnership with professional athletes is a dream to come true. “It was taking everythin g I love about teaching and yet being able to influence people who are accomplished and hard-working, yet very modest.”But even with help, figuring out the next chapter isn’t easy. Statistics show that 78 percent of professional football players are penniless, divorced or unemployed two years after retiring from their sport. The program tries to help players develop a plan for life after sport and 220 athletes have taken part over the past six years. Darwin Walker is one former student who avoided being a statistic. Today, he runs a number of successful businesses and thanks football for his accomplishments. “The concepts I learned about leadership have all come from playing the game of football,”says Walker. “The amount of study, amount of commitment, and timethat you have to put into it is very much like being a successful business person.”Shifting the skills learned on the field to the workplace seems natural to some, but the numbers show that’s not the case for everyone. Taheripour’s message to his stu dents is a serious one:This is the time to build for the future, he tells them, because no matter how long your athletic career lasts, you are so much more than just an athlete.29 By saying “athletes die two deaths”, the author means ________.A. athletes suffer too many failures in their lifeB. athletes have a sports life and a real lifeC. being an athlete contributes little to lifeD. athletes’later life can be easily rebuilt30. .Why is it difficult for professional athletes to decide what comes next?A. They might have not thought of this during their playing days.B. They have no idea whether to leave the game or not.C. They think as athletes they can make more money.D. They’re not willing to accept a new career.31. What does Darwin Walker manage to avoid?A. Making his sports career come to an end.B. Being unsuccessful in rebuilding his life.C. Going through the problem.D. Making a difference.32. What does the last paragraph imply?A. An athlete should think about more than his athletic career.B. An athlete’s sports career couldn’t last very long.C. An athlete should end his career earlier to build his new life.D. The longer an athlete’s career lasts, the more respect he receives.DDuring World War I, a German spy called Reginald Rowlandworked in the United Kingdom gathering information for Germany about the British army. To keep people away from smart phones.AGive your eyes a break from that screen.Let’s face it—you’re attached to your phone. You use it to communicate, play games and surf the internet. But there’s a great way to make your smart phone a life-enriching device without hurting your eyes. Check out the world of podcasts.Think of podcasts as your YouTube channels for listeners that you can download to your phone. What’s so exciting about that? Well, you can find a lot of amazing shows! Whatever you find that catches your attention, one thing is sure—listening inspires imagination. Because you can only listen to a show and not see it, you have to pay more attention. Therefore, your imagination has the potential to become stronger and more vivid as a result!Podcasts allow you to experience the world from various angles. Take America’s NPR and Britain’s BBC for example. Both have produced several podcasts. By listening to them, you can learn to appreciate cultural or linguistic distinctio ns. Choose what you like. Podcasts have been around for more than a decade, and one that really put podcasting in the spotlight is called Serial. I t’s in the form of a story, broken up over several weeks, complete with cliffhangers. Or maybe you like listening to people discuss interesting topics. My personal favorite is White Horse Inn. If you’re a fan of informative speeches, subscribe to one of the many TED Talks podcasts. There are several language-learning podcasts too, like ESLPod. The list goes on. If you’re not sure where to start, look up “top podcasts” and give one of their recommendations a try.Whether you’re riding a bus, exercising, or just relaxing, pop on some headphones and put your listening skills to the test. Download a podcast App, subscribe to a few and get listening. Or, better yet, if you have an idea for a podcast, why not produce one yourself?5. The author writes the first paragraph to ________.A. motivate readers to follow a trendB. draw readers’ attention to our planetC. lead readers to reconsider “going green”D. encourage readers to question natural products6. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us that _______.A. companies tend to develop environmental consciousnessB. consumers help the environment by buying green productsC. companies use “Going Green” strategies to promote the ir salesD. consumers contribute more to the environment than companies7. The two examples in paragraph 3 are used to show that ______.A. consumers are unwilling to follow the trendsB. more people have joined in the green campaignC. some don’t really ca re that much about environmentD. environmental problems are not very easy to deal with8. Al Gore holds the view that _________.A. a global war is likely to break outB. human beings are turning on each otherC. human beings are surrounded by green productsD. many people ignore the environmental destruction9. What is the author’s attitude towards the “Green Trend”?A. Negative.B. Doubtful.C. Unclear.D. Objective.BThe Green InvasionGreen fashions, green brands, green makeup, green lifestyles. “Going green” has taken our weak planet by storm, changing the everyday lives of its citizens. Stores and companies are starting to produce greener, more natural merchandise, but has “going green” become more than just a concern? Has “going green” become a trend among corporations, therefore a fashion for consumers? Not long ago, U.S. corporations were ignoring the idea of environmentally conscious products and processes. As the green phenomenon came into the picture, however, companies have done a 180with their sales strategies. Apple Inc. launched “A Greener Apple”campaign and pledged to remove harmful chemicals from its new computer products. Home Depot Inc. announced an Eco-Options stamp for more than 2,500 environmentally friendly products in its stores. And Kohl’s Corp. said it plans to convert (转换) most of its California stores to solar power. These changes, along with being good for our environment, are intended to step up sales. Consumers like to see companies make an effort to help the environment, and by buying those products they feel as if they have contributed to the cause as well.Although everything seems to be changing its color to green, there is not likely to be another hippie era(嬉皮士时代). This conversion to environmentalism is more gradual and technology-based. Many people really care, even to the extreme, but not everyone cares quite as much as they pretend to. Teenage girls may buy a shirt that says “Hug a Tree.” Do they want to broadcast its message or did they just like the cute squirrel on it? A mother may go to the grocery store and instead of picking the packaged produce, choose the organic greens. Does she know the health benefits or did she choose them because she saw another mom put them in her cart? Some consumers care. Others just follow the lead.Al Gore is the head who helped encourage the green movement. He emphasizes, “We are invading ourselves and attacking the ecological system of which we are a part. As a result, we now face the prospect of a kind of global civil war between those who refuse to consider the consequences of civilization’s relentless(无休止的) advance and those who refuse to be silent partners in the destruction.” Reading t hose words, wheels started clicking into place in the minds of millions who want to ensure that Gore’s predictions will never become reality.Green—the word is everywhere. Trend or not, it still makes a difference. The girl in the “Hug a Tree” shirt has contributed to a cause that may save a tree she would never consider actually hugging. The mom cooking with organic veggies instead of processed goods made that night’s dinner healthier for her family and the environment. “Going green”may be a trend, but th at doesn’t mean it’s not helping. This trend will hopefully become a dedicated movement to help save our home, Planet Earth.

On 29 May last year, I was doing my swim training for a half Ironman race in the bay near my home.I was finishing my first loop (圈) when I felt jaws coming around my body and a sharp pain. The water was dark, so I couldn't see anything. It just came out of nowhere and then it was gone in a flash. I knew it was something really big and assumed it was a shark. I panicked, but knew I needed to get out of the water. I was kicking wildly in case it came back. There was a lifeguard boat close by, so I waved my arms in the air and screamed for help. It got to me within 20 seconds. At that point I didn't feel anything; adrenaline (肾上腺素) had taken over. The lifeguards held me under the arms and pulled me up out of the water. Then the pain kicked in and it was pretty hard to bear. Some muscle had been bitten off my right arm. I felt a lot of warm, gushing blood. My chest felt heavy, as if someone had put their foot on it, and I was having trouble breathing. It was extremely painful. When I got to the hospital, I told the nurses to put me to sleep because of the pain. I just wanted them to fix me.I woke up after surgery four hours later. My doctor was amazed when I managed to move my fingers: the bite just missed a major nerve. My right lung had been damaged; I had several broken bones and a nerve in my leg was cut, so I have reduced feeling at the top of my leg. The shark also bit through my upper back muscle.Local experts determined that the shark was probably 9-10 feet long. It was young, about seven years old. It just attacked me, left and didn't come back because it figured I wasn't food.根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。

(15%)Choosing a husband or wife is one of the most important decisions in a person's life because a good maniage can mean the difference between a happy and an unhappy life. In many cultures, youngmen and women choose their own marriage 40 . In some cultures, on the other hand, parentsarrange their children's marriages. 41 arranged marriages have both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage to having parents arrange a marriage is 42 security. Of course, money doesn't 43 bring happiness, but a lack of money certainly causes 44 in any relationship. A second advantage of an ananged maniage is that parents may make a better 45 than their children. They are not only 46 but also wiser. Also, parents have been married, therefore, they know betterwhat qualities are desirable in a spouse. 47, parents may be better judges of character than young people, who often let uence their judgment. In49 , arranged marriages may be happy because parents choose with their heads, not with their50.On the other hand, arranged marriages may have some disadvantages. A second obvious disadvantage is that a young man or woman may already have fallen in love with someone else. But early horses weren't tame (驯服的)enough to perform these kinds of tasks. Scientists think the first interactions humans had with horses were far different from those today.Thousands of years ago, people killed tlie wild horses that lived around them for food. Over time, people began to catch the animals and raise them. This was the first step in domestication. As people began to tame and ride horses, they chose to keep those animals that had more desirable characteristics. For example, people may have chosen to keep horses that had a gentle personality so they could be ridden more easily. People who used horses to pull heavy loads would have chosen to keep strong animals. Characteristics like strength are partly controlled by the animals5 genes. So as the domesticated horses reproduced, they passed the characteristics on to their young. Each new generation of horses would show more of these chosen characteristics.Modern-day horse breeds come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This variety didn't exist in the horse population before domestication. The Stetland horse is one of the smallest breeds—typically reaching only one meter tall. With short, strong legs, the animals were bred to pull coal out of mine shafts (矿井)with low ceilings. Huge horses like the Clydesdale came on the scene around 1700. people bred these heavy tall horses to pull large vehicles used for carrying heave loads. The domestication of horses has had great effects on societies. For example, horses were important tools in the advancement of modem agriculture. Using them to pull ploughs and carry heavy loads allowed people to farm more efficiently. Before they were able to ride horses, humans had to cross land on foot. Riding horses allowed people totravel far greater distance in much less time. That encouraged populations living in different areas to interact with one another. The new form of rapid transportation helped cultures spread around the world.()59. Before domestication horses were.A.caught for sports.B.hunted for foodC.made to pull ploughsed to carry people()60. The author uses the Shetland horse as an example to showA.it is smaller than the Clydesdale horse.B.horse used to have gentle personalities.C.some horses have better shaped than others.D.horses were ofless variety before domestication()61.Horses contributed to the spread of culture by.A.carrying heavy loads.B.changing farming methods.C.serving as a means of transportD.advancing agriculture in different areas.()62. Her ideal of marriage had been something which brought her a husband and an orderly, well-fiimished home all at once. But she soon saw the advantages of this arrangement. She would, first of all, escape from her present life into a house which was quiet and efficiently run, not like her own; and she would be able to go on working so that she and Bob could save up all the money more quickly for their own house. She would also get Bob, a good enough husband for any working-class girl: good-natured and ready to be bent for her whenever it was necessaiy.Things went well until her mother-in-law r s death, when Annie had to give up her job and was at home all day. Researchers have been unsuccessfullylooking for a solution. The 16-year-old Canadian high school student, Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade(降解) in as few as 3 months, a finding that won him first prize at the Canada Wide Science Fair, a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.Burd's strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by microorganisms(微生物).If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions. With this goal in mind, he grounded plastic bags into a powder and concocted(调制) a solution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母)and tap water to encourage microbes growth . Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months .Finally, he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control .Sure enough, the plastic exposed(暴露) to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks. The inputs are cheap, maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes produce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.“ Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic bags falling on top of me .One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are doing with these plastic bags. The answer: not much .So I decided to do something myself. ” Said Daniel Burd.( 1)_____________________________________________________________________ Daniel Burd won first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair because _______________________________________________ .A.he found a way to degrade plastics in shorter timeB.he contributed much to environmental protectionC.he found a new kind of microorganismD.he could encourage microbe growth in an easier way( 2)_____________________________________________________________ D aniel Burd exposed one plastic sample to dead bacteria to ___________________________________________________________ .A.make the live bacteria work betterB.know which bacteria worked fasterC.test how effective his method wasD.control the temperature in the process( 3)_________________________________________________________________ Maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because ______________________________________________________ .A.plastics can get hot easilyB.microbes can produce heat themselvesC.much carbon dioxide is producedD.the temperature can be controlled( 4)__________________________________ Daniel Burd got his idea from .A.his school textbookB.the failure of researchersC.his everyday workD.the practice of other people2.阅读理解For hours after their boat sank, Ken Henderson and Coen trod(踏) water in the Gulf of Mexico, talking about life and death while struggling to survive. But rather than repeat the warning, I've decided to throw down a challenge: man against machine.Start with the task we're doing right now: communicating in fluent human. We're sharing abstract ideas through wordsthat we choose with an understanding of their slight difference and impact. We don't just speakin human; we speak as humans. A robot who says that science is fun is delivering a line (念一句话). A humanwho says that science is fun is telling you something important about being alive. Here's another inbuilt advantage we take for granted: as humans we are limited by design. We are bound in time: we die. We are bound in space: we can't be in more than one place at a time. That means when I speak to an audience, I am giving them something special. It's a custom-made, one-off, 100% robot-free delivery, from today's one-and-only Australian Chief Scientist.True, I now come in digital versions, through Twitter and Facebook and other platforms, but the availability of those tools hasn't stopped people from inviting me to speak in person. Digital Alan seems to increase the appetite for human Alan, just as Spotify (a digital music service) can increase the demand for a musician's live performances. Thanks to technology, many goods and services are cheaper, better and more accessible than ever before. We like ourmass-produced bread, and our on-tap lectures and our automated FitBit advice. But automation hasn't killed the artisan bakery (面包店). Online courses haven't killed the booming, alongside their machine equivalents. Here's a third argument for the win. We humans have learned the habit of civilization. Let me explain this point by a story. A few years go, some researchers set out to study the way the people interact with robots. They sent out a small robot to patrol (巡逻) the local mall. That robot had a terrible time, and the villains of the story were children. They kicked him, bullied him, and smacked (掌击) him in the head. The point is not that the children were violent. The point is that the adults were not. They restrained whatever primitive impulse (冲动) they might have felt in childhood to smack something smaller and weaker in the head, because they had absorbed the habit of living together. We call it civilization. If we want artificial intelligence for the people, we'll need every bit of that civilizing instinct.Together, these points suggest to me that humanity has a powerful competitive edge. We can coexist with our increasingly capable machines and we can make space for the full breadth of human talents to flourish. (1)What's humans' second advantage according to the author?A.Our special personality.B.Our super intelligence.C.Our unique existence.D.Our language ability.( 2)What's the author's attitude towards Spotify and FitBit?A.Negative.B.Doubtful.C.Grateful.D.Reserved.( 3)Why does the author tell the story of a small robot?A.To prove humans are well-educated.B.To show children are naughty in nature.C.To suggest machines will become violent.D.To indicate machines can serve humans well.( 4)What's the author's final conclusion about humans and machines?A.Both sides would be losers in the fight.B.Humans will completely defeat machines.C.Machines will replace humans in many fields.D.Humans and machines will live in harmony with each other.4. 阅读理解One of the most firmly established idea of manliness is that a real man doesn't cry. Although he might shed a tear at a funeral, he is expected to quickly regain control. Sobbing openly is for girls. One study found that women cry significantly more than men do —five times as often, on average, and almost twice as long per period.Historically, however, men routinely wept, and no one saw it as shameful. For example, in the Middle Ages, knights cried purely because they missed their girlfriends. In The Knight of the Cart, no less a hero than Lancelotweeps at a brief separation from Guinevere. There's no mention of the men in these stories trying to restrain or hide their tears. They cry in a crowded hall with their heads held high. Nor do their companions make fun of this public crying; it'suniversally regarded as an admirable expression of feeling. So where did all the male tears go? The most obvious possibility is that this shift is the result of changes as we moved from an agricultural society to one that was urban(城市的) and industrial. In the Middle Ages, most people spent theirlives among those they had known since birth. If men cried, they did so with people who would sympathize. But from the 18th to 20th centuries, the population became increasingly urbanize, and people were living in the midst of thousands of strangers. Furthermore, changes in the economy required men to work together in factories and offices where emotional expressions and even private conversations were discouraged as time wasting.Yet human beings weren't designed to swallow their emotions, and there's reason to believe that holding back tears canbe harmful to your well-being. Research from the 1980s has suggested a relationship between stress-related illnesses and inadequate crying. Weeping is also, somewhat related with happiness and wealth. Countries where people cry the most tend to be richer and more confident.( 1)___________________________________ In history, people considered it for men to cry in public.A.manlyB.acceptableC.shamefulD.ridiculous( 2)How does the author answer the question raised in paragraph 3?A.By making comparisons.B.By explaining effects.C.By offering descriptions.D.By giving definitions (定义).( 3)Who is likely to be healthier according to the passage?A.Tony who lives alone and seldom expresses himself.B.Emily who is outgoing but sometimes sobs in public.C.Arthur who is under great stress but never shed a tear.D.Rebecca who sometimes cries but quickly regain control. 二、任务型阅读(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分10 分)(共 1 题;共10 分)5.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
