U2PB 2. Why do some college students work part-time? Some students work for money because their family can’t provide them with all the expenses needed for college education; others work in order to get some experience that may be useful for future careers.
U4 PA 2. It is said that traveling by air is safer than any other form of transportation. Do you agree? According to statistics, the rate of air disasters is much lower than that of any other traffic accidents. We know more about air crashes simply because they are reported worldwide.
3. How do you feel when you hear of, or read about, an air disaster? I will surely feel sad or grieved for a few days, for an air disaster usually results
in many deaths at the same time.
PB1. Talk about one or two calamities that have happened around you, or that you have heard of.
One of the calamities the students probably know is the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center in the U. S. on Sept. 11, 2001, which resulted in the loss of several thousands of lives.
2. How should one react when he or she is in some sort of emergency? (One should try to make an emergency call for help, either to the police station, or to the fire brigade(消防队), or to the medical ambulance center.)
Nowadays, in Yangzhou you just dial 110 on any phone you have access to and tell it what help you want, it will help you find the exact help you need. Here, a phone plays a key role in your great need.
If you do not have a phone, crying out for “Help”is the best choice.
3. How do you understand the proverb “calamity is man’s true touchstone”?
Calamity is one of the critical moments to test a person’s true courage and ability to face and conquer difficulties.
What does Passages A and B tell us? Calamities can happen at any time, anywhere and most of them arise from our negligence, or some unknown reasons.

Bill Gates is the founder of Microsoft Corporation. He is a world famous figure and a successful example for many young people to follow.
2. What do you think of school education? Does it play a significant role in your life?
School education plays an important role in my life. In my opinion, school education is a steppingstone towards success. Also, it provides an opportunity to learn of the world.
3. Do you want to pursue graduate study after you get your BA or BS? Explain.
Of course. As the society is getting more and more competitive, we need to further our study and refresh our professional knowledge, so we can be qualified to meet the challenge.
It depends. If I have a good chance to work, I’ll take it and learn some skills in practice. If there is no job opportunity available, I prefer to pursue a higher degree.
PB 2. Have you ever watched a horse-riding competition?
Yes, I have, but it was on TV. Horse-riding is very popular in HONG Kong and many other western countries. It is very exciting and attracts huge crowds of people. But sometimes an accident may happen if it is not handled properly.
3. What are the biggest difficulties you have met with in your life and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest difficulties I met with was that I was in senior high school I had a car accident.
5. What can we learn from Christopher?
We learn that no matter what challenges we face, we should be brave and never give up.

Usually, I would take the difficulties as a challenge and try my best to find ways to overcome them with courage.
6. What have you learned from Paul Wylie's story?
From his story we learned it’s not easy for us to achieve success. We have to undergo many years of hard work and most importantly, we must refuse to give up.
PB 3. How do you keep a balanced diet?
I usually eat foods with low calories and fat, and have more vegetables and fruit and at the same time I go jogging every night.
U8PA 1. Do you often download free software from the Internet? Explain. Yes, I do. Many people welcome free software from the Internet because it’s convenient to download software and they don’t have to pay for it. Others don’t do so because there is no protection guaranteed against viruses.
2. Have you installed anti-virus software on your computer? What is it? Yes , of course. There are different kinds of anti-virus software, such as
Norton and Rising Star. I install Kaspersky on my computer to prevent viruses from being brought in.
3. Is it possible for us to find a way to get rid of computer viruses permanently? When old types of viruses have been taken care of, new ones may appear. It would be impossible to get rid of computer viruses permanently.
PB 2. How would you solve the problem if your computer is inflicted by viruses? I will try to kill the viruses first using the relevant software. If it doesn’t work, I’ll have to turn off the computer and contact the service center for help.
3. What would you do if you accidentally spread a virus? I will try to inform those who have received my email carrying this virus and warn them not to click on the attachment.
5. What are the effective ways to protect your computer from being attacked by viruses?
I think there are many effective ways to prevent my computer from being attacked by viruses. For example, I can install anti-virus software on my computer, and I won’t click on any attachment unless I have been told to expect it.。
